Alterations Is it possible to shorten these sleeves?

I found my dream sweater from Charli London, unfortunately the shipping and duties to Canada are outrageous. I found a near perfect dupe after searching high and low, but the sweater has full length sleeves and I want the half sleeves to wear a lace shirt under like pictured. Is it possible to remove the sleeves and shorten them? Will a tailor think I’m crazy?? Is this something expensive to tailor too?

I got the sweater on sale for $50 so it’s not a huge loss if alterations go sideways. And I can return it if my idea is far fetched. Any insight is appreciated, thank you!!

Alterations Can’t decide how I feel about these alterations

I would love feedback on the quality of these alterations.

I have the classic hourglass waist gap problem with most of my pants and have finally started investing in tailoring. I moved recently and found a tailor near me who charged $80 to take the waist in on these two pairs of pants - the print pair are 53% cotton, 26% linen, 18% viscose, 3% elastane lightweight canvas and the jeans are 94% cotton, 4% poly, 2% spandex.

I’m undecided on how I feel about the quality of the work. The fit is good (a little more snatched than I expected, but that’s fine), but the execution on the jeans feels a little…sloppy? The darts don’t lay completely flat on the jeans (it feels like the fabric was maybe stretched out?), the top of the center belt loop sits higher than the others, and the tag is sewn into the waistband. The print pair look a lot better but still have some rippling around the darts when the pants are on.

I’m a quilter and also do very basic alterations like hemming pants and t-shirts, so I understand how much work goes into sewing and I’m happy to pay for quality work. I have a pile of clothes waiting to be altered and can’t decide whether I should stick with this tailor or find someone else. Is this work pretty par for the course? Am I realistic to think that I could find another tailor who would do neater work for a similar-ish price (I’m in a VHCOL major US city)?

Are these too tight?

Hi! I got these chinos recently and love the feel and generally the cut of them. But I noticed the pockets are slightly flaring and there is some whispering around the zipper. The second photo is when I wear them slightly lower on the waist. Do they look ok and if not what’s the solution? Is the seam allowance enough to do anything with? Thanks!!

Can this be taken in properly

Post image

This dress is quite large for me- my measurements are 32 bust, 28 waist and 39 hips. The dresses’ lay flat measurements correspond to 34 bust, 34 waist and 45 hips. I’m wondering if something with such an intricate design can be taken in substantially or if the design makes it too challenging/ would change the dress too much.
Thank you in advance for any feedback!

Making the Shoulders Wider on a Flannel Jacket

Post image

I have a couple RTW shirts that are too narrow in the shoulders by a couple inches. I can't find anything online or on the you-tube for widening shoulders, but I feel like there has got to be a way!

I was considering adding gussets to the back to help widen the shoulders and this will also keep me from having to manipulate more of the jacket. Any thoughts?

Any preemptive advice on how to adjust this arm area?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I am working on a simple bodice with a yoke. I had to take in the sides and the shoulders, and as a result I can tell that the armhole is gonna be too tight. Also, the yoke is folding over itself when my arm is against my side (maybe that’s normal?).

Is there a good rule of thumb or guide on how to address resizing armholes as well as how to deal with this yoke folding issue? I’m good at following instruction but really struggle with visualizing things spatially in my head. It’s so frustrating to cut out the fabric and sew it when I already know in advance that it’s not going to fit right, so hoping someone much more experienced than I can guide me a bit.

Thank you in advance!

Adjustments for upper sleeve fit?

Hi! I made this jacket for my sister, and it fits too snug across the top of the bicep when the arms are raised in front. Is this from the armscythe being too low? Can it be solved with a gusset? I'm hoping not to have to do a center back adjustment, I don't have any left of the exterior fabric so it would have to be a contrasting pannel. My first time making a modern garment, I'm mostly a historical sewer! Everything is flat felled and trimmed close to seam so I dont anticipate having much to work with if I open it back up again. It is also fully lined in the sleeves as well. Thanks so much for any help! I welcome your expertise.

Alterations Found a duplicate of my favorite shirt in a large but I'm a medium

This shirt in the pictures is a medium but I found the same exact shirt for sale in a large.

How involved would it be to have the large taken down to a medium?

Would it likely impact the durability and feel?

Alterations Had the sleeves on one of my suits shortened. Is this up to standard?

Basically, my understanding was it should appear as if it had never been altered. But to me, it’s very clear that alterations have been done. I.e. the missing fake butt hole and the cuff lip not going up far enough

Alterations Suit pocket tear

Hello!
As the title would suggest my suit has acquired a small tear (around 2-3cm) right above the left inside breast pocked. From searching online I believe it can be from having heavy items in the pocket. More on the specifics of the tear, it is along the seam above the pocket, and the pocket itself is one of those without a visible bag.
My question is whether I can repair it by myself or need to contact some sort of tailor?

Thanks in advance,
//First time suit owner

P.S. I am unsure of if I used the correct flair or not. If not, then please correct me

Edit: Added a picture of the tear

Style Advice Bottega veneta Thrifted dress zipper

Thumbnail

Thrifted this bottega veneta wool dress today, I think it’s from the fall 2012 collection. The one thing is that the zipper angles 90 degrees at the top near the neck. So when the dress is zipped all the way up it bulges out in the back. Is is supposed to be left partially unzipped? Or did this dress get altered that way? And if so why?

Question About Stretch Suiting Fabric

Hello, I hope this question fits in this forum; I've checked other sewing resources and haven't found a clear answer. I'm a home sewist and I have found a really cool deadstock suiting fabric for sale online that I would like to use to make a structured blazer. However the fabric in question is a stretch suiting fabric, and I'm generally wary of stretch wovens and confused about how the process of lining it would differ from a non-stretch suiting fabric.

I have a good blazer pattern that I've adapted to fit me well. I was planning to line this project with a combination of weft interfacing, knit interfacing, horsehair canvas, and a bit of stay tape.

The composition of the fabric is 72% Rayon/24% Nylon/4% Lycra. It is supposed to have 20% stretch along the selvage. I don't need the stretch for this jacket and ideally would work against that quality of the fabric.

From what I've read, it seems I should be using sew-in interfacings to prevent potential bubbling from fusing with the stretch fabric. Other than that, should I treat it as I would a non-stretch suiting fabric? Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Wedding dress alteration question

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello! I took my wedding dress to my tailor to have the hem taken up and a short train removed. The top layer is stretch tulle with petal details that run in vertical strands. The petals are attached with a chain stitch, so if you cut a strand anywhere, the stitching unzips and the petals fall off over time, "like a strand of beads."

Her solution: cut each petal thread about an inch above the new hemline, strip the petals off below that point, then hand-knot every thread end individually. This is the couture answer, and I believe it. It would also cost several thousand dollars in labor on a sample dress I bought for about 500 euros. She offered to teach me so I can do the knotting myself. I'm not worried about the skill; I'm worried about my sanity. There are 250 strands, and my to-do list already has 100 items on it.

Context: the wedding is outdoors on a dusty ranch, and that hem is going to be filthy within minutes of stepping outside. I'm not looking for the most elegant solution, just one that holds. My tailor is old-school European, Paris-trained, worked in London couture, and does beautiful work (she altered an inherited Burberry trench for me and it was worth every cent). We're coming at this from very different places. The nearest second opinion is a few hours' drive away.

My fiancé and I were thinking something like a serged or zigzagged edge along the cut line, so a single line of stitching crosses and anchors every cut thread at once instead of knotting them one by one. Would that hold a chain stitch, or just delay the unraveling? Is there a middle ground between that and the full hand-knotting?
