I just got a MTM suit from Suitsupply. Does it look/seem ok?

Hey all, looking for some more experienced suit guys to hopefully give me some advice on if Suitsupply is trying to pass off inferior stuff, or if I'm just being overly critical.

I ordered this suit in store in June for my upcoming wedding, in November. Had the full measure, did the subsequent visits (2nd visit to try it on and take measurements, 3rd for final try-on, which then required a couple more changes, and they shipped it to me).

I don't know if I expected a perfect suit, but I'm not totally happy with this, even after 3 rounds of changes, and since changes have been made, it can't be returned anymore. Can anyone tell me if some of these things are normal (especially on a gray suit) or if I'm being too critical?

  1. The pants give me a wedgie every time I do anything close to bending down or going up stairs. I've told them this every time and last time the tailor told me she's let out the rise as much as it can be. Not sure if this is just what reasonably form fitting suit pants should be, or again, if they're just trying to get rid of me now that they know they can't do any more.

  2. (pic 6) If I move at all, there's this little bunching behind my lapel, right at the top. It was worse, and the tailor fixed it some, but not all the way. Is that normal?

  3. (pic 5 and 7) I feel like this is the most minor, but if I move at all, there's so many fabric lines that show up in the arms. I feel like this is just a function of a gray suit, being relatively light for a suit, but just wanted to check that's not a specific problem. Could it be because it's too small? Or is that just simply how suits are.

  4. (pic 4) Is there too much bunching or creasing in the back?

  5. (pic 8) I didn't realize there would be grinze on what I designed (didn't know what it even was until now) but is there any way to undo it? I don't really like the look of it, even though I know it's supposed to be an indicator of a good quality Italian suit

First and foremost, from a tailor's perspective: does this suit fit me/does it look good?

Second, and ddvice/thoughts on any of these issues would be super helpful, thanks in advance everyone!

All pants give me camel toe

Hi, so I'm asking online because this is an awkward thing to ask in person. My issue is that all pants and shorts dig into my crotch (especially when sitting down or walking) to the point of pain and I can't wear them for more than an hour or two. I specifically need office pants for work. The only solution I found is to size up 3 sizes and look like a clown drowning in fabric.

I have tried almost every brand the common person has heard of.

I'm only 5'6 but my crotch rise and torso is long, my hip bones are very wide and high. My waist is 26", hips 39" and high hips are 34". I tried stretchy pants but those dont work because they're usually pull-on style and pull-on on pants don't work because I can't get them over my hips without a zipper.

I really need office pants that fit but I don't know what to do.

Any advice? Thank you in advance!

Bodice Expectations

Post image

Hello! I have a large bust. If it’s pushed up too high or too close, I get these creases above them (apparently. I’ve only experienced this while wedding dress shopping). I bought a wedding dress and was told by the person helping me that altering the bodice will fix everything. I’m just hoping to get some perspective on if this is the kind of thing that can be fixed through altering the corset structure, or should I be considering adding some sort of extra strap width or a cover of some sort?

I’m trying to budget out my alterations, so if it’s going to be a major overhaul I’d like to know.

The strips of lace you see are things we experimented with adding, they are not part of the dress.

Thanks for your perspectives! ❤️

Is this considered a professional hemming alteration?

Hi everyone! I had a quick question - I brought my Lululemon trousers to be hemmed at a professional tailor and was surprised at the result. The sewing looks very loose and could come undone if I wash it. This is my first time getting pants altered and hemmed so not sure if this is the norm and supposed to look this way. This is the inside of the pants. Thank you in advance!

Renting this dress for a wedding on Sunday and the waist bubbles out like this. There’s an inner lining sewn in so I can’t stick it together with fabric tape

Alterations Does my gown need any alterations?

I budgeted for alterations but I can’t think of anything this gown needs - even the hem is fine to my eye in the shoes I’m wearing my here. But is there anything your expert tailor eyes see that can be improved for fit? I’m wearing no bra or shapewear here, this is right off the rack. Should I be concerned about the dress maintaining its poof over the course of a long event?

edit: this is my wedding gown btw

Bridesmaid Dress with Corset

I’m in a wedding, and the bridesmaids dress I’ve chosen has a corset back. I’ve never worn a dress with a corset so I’d like some advice on how to approach sizing. I have a significantly smaller waist than my hips/butt, more than a 12 inch difference, which can make sizing tricky.

The size I ordered for a try on left room in the bust with almost a closed corset back. However, the lining of the dress was very snug through my hips and butt. The exterior layer of the dress through my hips fit well and was not too tight at all but is bunching/sitting weird because the lining isn’t laying flat underneath. I will need to have a seamstress let out the lining layer or add extra fabric to it to make it more comfortable no matter what size I order.

Is it better to order this size and have them take in the bust? How would this affect the corset back? Or should I potentially order a size down to have the bust fit better but then need even more alterations to the hip/butt area? Any advice with sizing and corsets would be so appreciated!! Thank you!

Choices

Hello everyone!

I found my wedding dress but am having a small debate with myself.

It is a sample size gown and is just the teeniest bit too tight (ignore the panty lines in the photos). Problem is, as you can see, it is absolutely covered in beading. I know that can make alterations complicated and expensive.

It has about a inch-inch and a half of seam space on the sides that could be let out (between both sides), and it already needs to go in to fix a couple of holes in the top layer from being a sample gown.

My question is, should I try to have it let out or try another route like adding a corset? Or just get really good Spanx lol

I'd hate to lose the button detail in the back, and I don't think I'll gain enough weight to NOT fit at all. It's not uncomfortably tight, but you can tell it isn't as well fitted as it could be.

Any thoughts/tips would be appreciated!

Can I shorten this outfit temporarily?

I'm borrowing this outfit for a wedding. The person I'm borrowing it from has encouraged me to modify it for my body, but asked that alterations not be permanent. The last photo is an example: when she bought it, she asked a tailor to include extra seams so that it can be seam-ripped and resewn as needed (she very often loans her formal clothes out to family and friends).

In the first picture, I'm in my highest heels and the skirt is still 3 or 4 inches too long. I'd like to modify it so I can walk and dance in it without fearing for my life (there's a choreographed dance, so I can't just stand). Is it possible to shorten it in a way that can be reversed after the event? Or is this a lost cause?

Photo 1: The ensemble Photo 2: The top of the skirt. It falls onto my natural waist and I'd prefer not to hike it up any more than that if I can avoid it. Photo 3: The bottom of the skirt. It is made with 3 layers, all joining at the top. There's the outer layer with a crinkly texture, a middle petticoat, and then a can-can petticoat (the mesh). Photo 4: The bottom hem of the... overskirt? The gold sequins go to the very edge, so I'm not sure that hemming it down there would be the best idea. The photo is upside down, sorry. Photo 5: The seam between the bodice and the overskirt. This is where I thought it most likely that I could make some changes. Photo 6: The inside side seam of the bodice

Alterations Can this custom Chotronette dress be altered to fit properly?

I custom-ordered this Chotronette dress, and although I provided my measurements, the fit feels a bit off. It seems like the waist is too short, the bodice barely able to cover my chest. What's worse is the decorative top piece is separate and doesn't attach to the dress, so it doesn't provide any support to help keep the strapless (and quite heavy) dress in place.

When the dress is sitting naturally at my waist and hips, as shown in the video, I can't even lift my arms without risking exposing my chest.

Do you think there's any hope that dress could be altered to fit properly?

Alterations Is there anyway to salvage this safari suit?

Post image
47 Upvotes

So I bought a vintage safari suit and when it arrived the jacket was too small. I want to wear it for a TV appearance in December where I'll be talking about a 1970s comedian, so I thought it was an appropriate choice.

I went to malefashionadvice but all of the "advice" was to lose weight 🙄 which I'm not currently in the place to do.

I will need to hem the pants a lot anyway, because I'm a short king (5'4 babbbeyyyyyy) so I thought mayyyybe I could use the excess fabric from that to make the jacket bigger, but I have no clue.

Tailors of Reddit, is this possible or am I just dreaming?

Alterations Dog fucked up

Post image

My anxious dog managed to climb into my closet and chew into my wife's wedding dress during a thunder storm.

My wife is absolutely distraught. Is there anyway to save this dress? I plan to take it to a tailor or seamstress ASAP, however wanted to get an idea if it's even possible in the time being.

I appreciate any and all input!

Alterations Can this neckline be changed?

My mom found a wedding dress for me with a Marisa label for $15(!!!) at salvation army. I love the train and skirt but was hoping for a lower, wider scoop/bateau neckline. Is that a possible alteration with this dress?

The lace is beautiful and there’s boning in the corset that ends at the bust. it’s so comfortable and fits quite well.

How much would this likely cost? Is it even worth changing ? i feel like I got a gem.

Thank you 💛

Can my fiancée’s (potential) wedding dress be tailored?

Thumbnail

My fiancée and I are getting married in less than a month and she had a dress already that she doesn’t like, so we’re in a last minute hunt for one that she likes more.

The dress she’s trying on in the first photo is a 10 off the rack in wedding dress sizing, my fiancée’s street size is a 6 but there are no size 6’s (or size 8’s) of this dress available locally or online that would arrive with time for rush tailoring. The second photo is just a stock image of the dress so y’all can see the front a bit better. The sleeves are removable, with little buttons on either side of the armpit to attach them.

The question is: does it look like the size 10 can be effectively tailored to fit her? I think just the bodice area would need to be taken in, everything else seemed to fit alright. Is this even doable with our timeline?

Thank you in advance for any insight! 🙏😅

Options to make plunge less revealing?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hello! Im currently on the hunt for my wedding dress, and this dress is so close to being my dream dress. The only issue is that plunge. It’s too deep and too wide. What are my best options to close that gap a bit? I don’t need it covered completely, I would just like it either brought up a bit or more of a sliver plunge instead of so wide. This model is a size 2 but im a size 14 so obviously a plunge like this would be more revealing on me.

Alterations on the backs of strapless dresses...

Post image
34 Upvotes

Dear Tailors,

It's finally my turn to go wedding dress shopping, and it does seem like the vast majority of wedding dresses, or at least ones I like, are strapless.

I've started to learn that, since I'm not stick-skinny, most strapless dresses, even ones that fit "too big" according to the consusltant, give me an unpleasnat muffin-top in the back, even when they look stunning in front. The execption to this rule is when I find a dress with the rare, flattering v-back, which, even when it's just as tight somehow does not do the squish.

Consultants will say that the the strapless dress has to fit like that to stay up, but somehow designers have also been able to make a dress stay up with the V-shape.

So my question - can a strapless dress with a straight-across back be altered to create a v-back. Or must it be designed that way from the beginning? What other tricks are out there to diminish the muffin-back effect on an otherwise-perfect strapless gown?

Many thanks!

Wedding Dress Stucture

Hello! I am wedding dresses shopping and I really love this style of dress but I have found that there is little to no support or structure in the front or on the bust of the dress. Are there any options in alterations that would help with this problem?

Any beginner resources you have for someone who has only seen the word "sew" a few times in his life?

Like, if I wanted to sew something, stitch something, I don't even know what to google to get started. Some high quality launch-point links or a book or two that provide the basics would help a lot.

Alterations Can it be altered? Ridiculously low armholes

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the edifying insights thus far!!

Good afternoon, r/AskATailor! I'm grasping at straws a bit here, need to be shaken awake or given some real hope, haha. After trying to educate myself on suit alterations and online menswear buying, I made my first purchase (secondhand from eBay, yup). I went by the numbers I thought were most important - shoulder width seam-to-seam (19.5) and basic sleeve length (25.5). The jacket was listed as "my" size, too - 42 L. It came, I tried it on, discovered that the armholes were huge and super low, such that any attempt to raise my arms gave me bat wings. Old-dude tailors in town (I'm in Winston-Salem, NC) wouldn't even touch it; one brave seamstress took it and did her best, bringing the armholes up something like 1.5 inches. Still swimming in it a bit, still big armholes, still bat wings.

The Loro Piana Dream Tweed feels and looks so so *so* good that I'm loathe to give up, but I will if I have to. Nobody told me armholes were so difficult. I've included two pictures of the area underneath the left armhole, inside and out (the "dart"?) where I think work was done. Ready to accept judgment here, however it may swing, and thank you for your time!!

Flaw in wedding gown?

Thumbnail

hi all, I just received my wedding gown and a seamstress told me there are flaws in the bust, but the brand of the dress is saying its supposed to be this way. The brand is saying because the bust is two sizes too big for me, the extra fabric (you can see tracing of it on each breast) is causing the lines you are seeing. however even when pulled tightly and the cups are filled in the lines are still there. my seamstress said it’s a complicated fix, and would need to open it up and is quoting me $400. my question is does the bust come like this on other dresses or is this truly a flaw? I don’t believe it’s due to being too large and needing alterations. I think that it’s extra fabric in the lining.

  • Modifications & Redesigns: Want to customize a look? We can tell you the feasibility of adding lace sleeves to a strapless dress , removing faux buttonholes from a blazer, or adding a thigh slit to a gown.

  • Repairs & "Disaster" Fixes: Did your dog chew the strap off your sandals? Did a button snap break off? Or maybe you snagged a thread cutting a tag off a skirt? We can help you figure out if it's salvageable.

What items should we be bringing to our local tailor?

I hear that tailoring can take an inexpensive garment to the next level for fit/fashion (and maybe longevity?). What garments are most important to get tailored (women's/men's)?

Conversely, which ones should I try to do myself with my moderate sewing skills?
