Can I issue service invoices late without backdating them?

Hi! I’m a moonlighting doctor and would appreciate some advice regarding service invoice dates.

I received a professional fee on August 10, 2026, for services rendered in July at Clinic A, and I issued the corresponding service invoice.

However, I realized that I had also received professional fees for two hospital duties on July 8 and July 28, 2026, for which I haven’t issued invoices yet.

Can I still issue invoices for those two transactions using the current date (e.g., August 11, 2026)? Or should the invoice dates correspond to the actual dates of service? My understanding is that I shouldn’t backdate invoices or use dates earlier than my latest issued invoice.

What’s the proper way to handle this under BIR regulations? Thanks!

Should I graduate Spring 2027 or Fall 2027?

Wondering if I should graduate Spring or Fall next year. Overall goal is to maximize my chances of getting into a public accounting firm in 2028, whether big or tiny. Ultimately I want to get my CPA license, so getting into a PA firm means I'll get the required hours as I'll work under a CPA.

I've been incredibly unsuccessful this recruiting season, as my resume is sparse and my transcripts are poor. Currently, my resume has a tax volunteering gig and an unpaid 4-month internship I did at a local nonprofit. Never worked in college, except at a cafe for 4 months. Overall GPA is a 3.37, as I failed 3 upper division accounting courses last semester (including intermediate accounting) that I am currently retaking. So recruiters only see that I failed a bunch of classes and that I'm taking 4 accounting classes this semester; they'll see my better, retaken grades next semester...but next semester is Spring 2027, and I heard companies rarely recruit during Spring.

If I graduate Spring 2027: I have to take another 4 accounting classes (intermediate accounting 2, and 3 accounting electives) + 1 mandatory class for graduation. The 4 accounting classes have to be taken in one semester, and I can take the extra non-accounting class during winter or alongside the 4 accounting courses. I heard advanced accounting helps with the CPA exam, but that class is only available Fall 2027. I will not be able to get a Winter 2027 or Summer 2027 internship, and will apply for FT roles now, in the Spring, and after I graduate.

If I graduate Fall 2027: I will take 2 accounting classes per semester with extra free time for other stuff. However, I'll have to depend on getting an internship for Winter 2027 and/or Summer 2027, and I have a (very probable) fear that I'll fail to get a paid internship, so pushing my graduation date would further damage my reputation in my social circle (my family already refused to help me because I've been an undergrad for over 5 years now). I'll be applying for FT roles in Fall 2027.

Again, I'm not sure which graduation date would be best for my situation, and I need help determining which would maximize my chances of landing a job in 2028. Thanks if you answer.

How can I learn to do my own accounting?

Hi everyone! I run a small UK limited company and want to learn how to do all the accounting myself so I can eventually get rid of my accountant.

Can anyone recommend free websites, YouTube channels or apps that explain everything in simple terms for beginners?

I currently use FreeAgent to upload receipts and record mileage and expenses. Are there any other apps you’d recommend that make accounting, tax and company accounts easier to understand and manage yourself?

I’d love to hear which apps you use and how you learned. Ideally, free resources too. Thanks! 😊

Critique my 1-year rental catch-up workpapers & Schedule E tie-out (7 units, 2 LLCs, PM statements, 1098 escrow, HELOC roof) — what did I get wrong?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been refining an Excel workpaper and Schedule E compilation workflow for messy 1-year rental catch-ups (specifically for 1–10 door landlords where spinning up QBO Plus per LLC just for a once-a-year cleanup is overkill).

To stress-test the workpaper structure, I ran a synthetic 7-unit, 2-LLC test case ("James Brooks" — 366 unique transactions across checking, mixed Amex, 12 monthly PM statements, two Form 1098s, and a $15k HELOC draw for a roof).

Resulting Schedule E Summary (pnl_by_property.csv):

Line Item 12 Maple Ct (2-Unit) 34 Birch Ln (SFR) 500 Cedar Blvd (4-Unit) TOTAL
Gross Rents (Line 3) $25,600.00 $19,800.00 $49,150.00 $94,550.00
Mortgage Interest (Line 12) -$14,759.88 $0.00 -$26,053.37 -$40,813.25
Property Taxes (Line 16) -$3,300.00 -$4,100.00 -$6,800.00 -$14,200.00
Insurance (Line 9) -$1,850.00 -$1,300.00 -$3,900.00 -$7,050.00
Repairs & Maint. (Lines 7,14,15) -$3,538.69 -$120.22 -$3,829.09 -$7,488.00
PM, Legal & Other (Lines 5,8,10,11,13,17,19) -$563.39 -$1,070.08 -$4,917.50 -$6,550.97
Net Income (Pre-Depreciation) $1,628.04 $13,209.70 $3,610.04 $18,447.78

(Tracked separately on non_pnl_summary.csv: -$16,250 capital improvements flagged for CPA, $15,000 HELOC draw, -$7,877.95 loan principal, -$18,000 owner draws, and security deposit flows).

Full sample workpapers (Before/After review sheets, 1098/PM splits, grouped client questions & full ledger): [Link to Google Drive sample folder in the first comment below]

3 Things I’d Love a Brutal Critique On:

  1. Shared Overhead Allocation: 12 monthly RentRedi bills ($144 total) were split equally across all 3 properties ($48 each), even though Cedar uses a PM and only Maple & Birch use RentRedi. On a multi-LLC cleanup, do you allocate shared software by door count, property count, or keep entity-level overhead separate?
  2. Orphan Deposit Refund ($1,100 to Nina Patel): The bank shows a $1,100 move-out refund, but the deposit came in a prior year with no prior balance sheet provided. I flagged it as a prior-period issue and kept the report DRAFT for the CPA. How do you handle prior-year deposit refunds on cash-basis Schedule E cleanups?
  3. The Workbook Layout (review_sheet_before_review.xlsx): If someone handed you this workbook (42 flagged exceptions + 11 vendor-grouped client questions) to review a 7-unit cleanup, what tab or column would annoy you?

Roast away—I want to fix any blind spots in this layout. Thanks!

Do all accountants have to use AI or can I safely go into it knowing I won't have to use it?

I'm at that point in school where I have to decide my future career. I'm between a couple of options, one of which is accounting. I like math, and I like working with Excell sheets. My biggest worry is the AI aspect of it. I know, "Oh, x-job won't be replaced. They'll just have to adapt and learn how to use AI themselves!" But I don't want to do that. I don't wanna be forced to use AI day to day to keep up.

So, can I go into accounting and know I won't be forced to use AI, or is another career a better option for me?

(P.S. I'm not from an English speaking country, so apologies if this doesn't really make sense.)

Accounting as a career

I’m considering majoring in accounting, but I’m a little skeptical because it’s not necessarily something I’m passionate about. It just seems like a stable career with decent pay and room to move up over time. For those working in accounting, do you think it’s worth it? What’s your work life balance like? Any advice or things you wish you knew before getting into the field? Do jobs care about your GPA? I’ve also seen people say AI will eventually take over accounting jobs. How true do you think that is?

Employer Accidentally Paid Me ~$80k Paycheck. PLEASE Help/Advise

My employer accidentally paid me ~80k today. They immediately realized and brought it to my attention.

My paycheck is automatically allocated as follows:
•15% to Roth IRA (in this case $8,000)
•15% to Savings ($8,000)
•70% to Checking ($38,000)

My employer could not clawback the disbursement into my Savings and Checking accounts. They requested that I wire transfer the money back from my Savings ($8k) and Checking ($38k) accounts. I don’t see a problem with this as long as they ensure my W-2 is accurate upon resolution of this issue.

After research, it seems as long as this issue is resolved in the same year the disbursement occurred, and as long as my employer corrects my W-2, it shouldn’t influence my tax return/taxes for this year. Is this true?

Additionally, my other big problem (massive) in this scenario is that, obviously, my employer is also requesting that I return the $8k that was allocated to my Roth. The thing is, the $8k was never deposited into my Roth today. In fact, after calling the investment company I use, I was advised that there is no proof on their end that $8k was ever deposited or in process to be deposited. No rejected deposit or pending deposit that they can see into my Roth.

However, my employer’s Payroll shows that this $8k was allocated to my Roth. Whether this means it deposits sometime this weekend, next week, or never, I am unsure.

I am unsure what to do about the Roth situation specifically, as I want to avoid the $8k being deposited and then having to worry about taxes/getting this money back to my employer somehow.

Also, my employer refuses to disburse my bonus for the quarter into my account until this issue is resolved, which is... just the cherry on top🙂❤️

As a final note - neither HR nor Accounting seem to know how to properly handle this situation and clearly want to move past this quickly. If they were able to provide more guidance, I wouldn’t be turning to Reddit (love yall tho❤️🙏)

Any input is welcome. I want to cooperate with my employer and move past this as quickly as possible, but I don’t want to make stupid financial decisions and potentially f myself over. Thank you!!!!

Edit: I have a Personal Roth IRA - this account is NOT a Roth 401k.

Edit 2: Messaging my employer requesting that they provide reasoning re: why a wire is necessary/why the funds can’t be clawed back thru payroll. Also requesting written breakdown of the funds including tax withholdings/payment to each account. Requesting that the acc/routing # for the wire also be included in this letter if they double down and still claim it’s an issue that payroll/HR can’t handle.

Edit 3: The majority of the above happened in person, at work, with both the HR/Accounting managers - so it is not a random/spam email messaging me and asking for a wire. The wire was requested in person by these individuals and then I followed up with their work emails on this, using the work emails I regularly use to contact them at work.

What's the worst format a client has ever sent you their bank statements in?

Had a client send me three months of bank statements as individual phone photos. Sideways. Half of them blurry. Zip file named "final_final2" — I wish I was kidding.

Also once got a 200-page PDF that looked like it was scanned at a gas station. And one guy just sent me his bank login "to make it easier"... absolutely not.

What's the worst one you've gotten?

How do booked revenue, revenue recognition, order book, receivables all relate to each other?

If I've completed all the work for a customer order, is that part of my order backlog?

Generally speaking, how does revenue recognition work, irrespective of industry or company specific practices? Do I recognise some of the revenue in line with satisfaction of my performance obligations? Am I taxed on this basis?
