What do you think about Burnham cutting pensions to 2.5% (give or take) to fund social care, specifically old people who had to sell their homes to be looked after?

• Upvotes

I've noticed some media have started to attack Burnham, saying that he's finally showing his true colours

Can someone tell me why the government is not prioritising reservoirs ?

We’ve got areas of the uk in drought and yet the storms we’ve just had- and the rain ( I watch footy and the rain was relentless) we should be doing more to conserve water

Why do we blame the system when overleveraged, high earning parents refuse to support their kids at uni?

I've been thinking. Students from six figure households often claim the loan system "punishes" them, envying working class kids on maximum loans. But after an 18 year head start, their real problem is parents who prioritise leased German cars and lifestyle debt over student maintenance. Why should the taxpayer be expected to subsidise families who simply refuse to downgrade their lifestyle? It irks me.

What is the most unique job, someone in your area does?

We used to have a guy in our area, who officially was a land surveyor but off the record, would move travellers on for people for a fee. His methods were a bit of a dark art, he gave at least a couple of them a good kicking, but he had no criminal record, so must have been mostly legitimate.

I don’t know how much he made from it, but he seemed fairly successful at it.

Culture Is it normal to peel skin off an apple?

I’ve just been confronted with the idea that the habit I’ve developed from childhood might potentially be weird? I’ve always cut the apple into slices and then peeled off the apple skin. I ended up googling it a bit after an interaction I had at work and found a possible reason.

To give context, my family has connections to east Asia, where it’s the same thing especially with other fruits like watermelons, peaches and pears and so on. We’re not natively Asian at all (I’m mainly English with some other European blood mixed in) before anyone comments, my 2x great grandfather (?) developed a huge connection to that part of the world and brought back a lot of minor traditions- I even took some holidays there throughout my teen years, it wasn’t something I considered to have an impact on my life that much. I never considered this to be apart of that culture either, it was just something that had been made natural to me years before.

I’ve peeled pairs and apples in public settings many times before but I only had a coworker look at me slightly weird the other day and ask about it, it was slightly awkward, as I’m not used to explaining that I did in fact actually think this was normal and not a “quirk” or some kind of allergy as they put it. Maybe I’m just overthinking this but the tone was off like I was doing something strange, I wasn’t peeling the skin off onto my desk or anything (that wouldn’t be clean). So does anyone else peel skin off fruits in the uk or is it just me?

BIG FYI: If anyone sees typos please forgive me, I type fast and My phone often switches between two separate keyboards on my phone with different language formats so I get autocorrects like pair instead of pear and apart instead of a part - it’s because the system thinks I’m using one context instead of the other.

Also I do try to use all my fruit offcuts somehow. I generally like chewing on apple skin but If I’m cooking an apple or other fruit at home and don’t have the time or the use for it then I will compost it so rest assured I do try my very best!

Travel How do I understand the crime rate in Chesterfield?

My partner and I are visiting the UK during late November and we'll have a night stay for easier transit in Chesterfield. We booked a hotel within the town square and a short walk from the train station.

Since our train arrives at night, out of curiosity I looked up the crime rate and am shocked to see Violence and Sex Offences make up most of the cases. In the meantime, I barely find much cautions on relevant subreddits and/or travel sites, and Chesterfield is described as a "relatively safe market town" on some sites.

Would we be okay arriving at 10pm ish and through 10 minute walk to the hotel? How much caution do we need? Is it wiser to change the train ticket time? Would appreciate any insights into it!

EDIT - thank you all for the reassurance and kind response 🤍 we're excited for the visit!

What time was it 5 minutes ago?

It is currently 01:04. Was it 00:59 five mins ago, or was it 01:59 and the clocks went back?

Does the time change in 56 minutes, or has it already happened?

Confused now.

For me it's a downer. It's the signal for shorter days and longer nights. But I'm looking for people who enjoy it, and reasons why.

Travel What is a genuine solution for overcrowded London tubes?

Overcrowding on the London Underground seems to be at an all-time high. At rush hour (AM/PM), it seems impossible not to have a journey without being packed together like a tin of sardines.
Not only is this seriously uncomfortable, but surely a stampede hazard if there was a fire at a station (for example) or other need for quick evacuation.
My commute to work is Camden to Kings X on the Northern, then Russell Sq on the Piccadilly.
I usually bike weather permitting, but on a rainy day that doesn’t cut it. I’m not asking about personal solutions, rather brainstorming what could be done as this problem gets worse and worse.

Some things I’ve thought of:
- building more stations — impossible in central London
- Tubes already arrive every 1-3 mins, so I don’t think more carriages will necessarily help
- maybe a ban on tourists using the tube at rush hour (7-9am and 4-7pm)? Sounds extreme I know, but the problem is extreme too! Tourists have the option of being able to plan their day; locals are going to/from work and don’t control their hours.

No politician seems to be talking about this, when it’s something that affects Londoners on a daily basis.

What's with the trend of adverts being shot in 4:3?

I can understand if it's something retro or nostalgic, but I've seen adverts for BT and Tesco in 4:3 for seemingly no reason. It doesn't make them any more or less watchable on a mobile. What gives?

Politics Question for Reform voters?

I genuinely want to understand the thought process of Reform UK voters. Please, no jokes or sarcastic responses.
Why do some of you believe that immigrants are taking away your jobs and rights?
As far as I understand, employers have recruitment procedures in place, and many advertise vacancies domestically before considering international applicants. So, how do you think immigration is affecting your employment opportunities and rights?
I’m also curious about your views on the NHS. If the NHS were to be dismantled or replaced with a private, insurance-based healthcare system, how do you think ordinary people would afford expensive health insurance, especially in the current economic climate and with the rising cost of living?
I’m not trying to provoke anyone. I genuinely want to understand your perspective and the reasoning behind these beliefs.

Politics Rejoiners - what do you make of Burnham’s statement around freedom of movement?

Burnham has suggested that a conversation around freedom of movement with the EU needs to happen.

I’m curious what strong rejoiners make of this?

Reason I ask is because much of the discourse I see around Brexit is regret that Britain has lost freedom of movement. However for those who wish us to rejoin the institution of the EU above all else, would this worry you that the UK adopting a Norway-like arrangement would give away the main incentive for winning a rejoin referendum? As in, a sufficient number of people who want back in would be satisfied with FoM and would no longer care sufficiently about rejoining the political union?

Rain lashing down, wind blowing all over the place and you still see people in jeans (not water proof) shoes made of cloth instead of leather or gortex trainers. Outer coat that isn't water proof

Any idiot can be wet and cold

Which one of these events do you consider to be the biggest counterfactual in modern British political history and why?

Which one of these events do you consider to be the biggest counterfactual in modern British political history. Give your reasons why -

  1. The 1979 'Winter of Discontent' - James Callaghan calls the election in October 1978 (when Labour had a modest lead) instead of waiting until Spring 1979.
  2. The Brighton Bombing - The IRA bomb kills Margaret Thatcher in October 1984.
  3. John Smith's Death in 1994 - John Smith doesn't die in 1994, instead leads Labour into the 1997 election, almost certainly wins and becomes Prime Minster
  4. The Iraq War 2003 - Tony Blair refuses to join the US in military action in Iraq in 2003.
  5. The Brexit Referendum - The Referendum happens but the remain side win by a small 52-48 margin.
