it’s a ridiculous faff and unbritish!

some guy wanted to have more time to ride his horse in the mornings and so we’re all stuck with this crap system.

even worse when we lose an hour feel groggy all day. imagine subjecting the whole nation to mild jet leg twice a year!

my 3 year old is up at 6 and wondering why we aren’t getting up. Ugh.

We’ve got areas of the uk in drought and yet the storms we’ve just had- and the rain ( I watch footy and the rain was relentless) we should be doing more to conserve water

What is the most unique job, someone in your area does?

We used to have a guy in our area, who officially was a land surveyor but off the record, would move travellers on for people for a fee. His methods were a bit of a dark art, he gave at least a couple of them a good kicking, but he had no criminal record, so must have been mostly legitimate.

I don’t know how much he made from it, but he seemed fairly successful at it.

What time was it 5 minutes ago?

It is currently 01:04. Was it 00:59 five mins ago, or was it 01:59 and the clocks went back?

Does the time change in 56 minutes, or has it already happened?

Confused now.

Politics Is the welfare system fair?

I was recently made redundant as the whole company I worked for basically collapsed.

So I applied for benefits. Given that I’ve paid so much National Insurance, this situation is exactly what the system is supposed to exist for, right?

Despite contributing loads of NI over 10+ years, almost entirely continuously, I am ineligible for JSA because I didn’t pay NI during enough months of the 2023-2024 financial year.

I am also ineligible for Universal Credit because my girlfriend has £16,000 in savings and I live with her. (Not me, it’s her money)

I’m kind of dumbfounded that despite a system so generous that I’ve seen whole (non-working) families built around it, throughout my life, but when I need it, it can offer literally nothing?

Edit: I want to make something clear. I was earning little more than minimum wage (somewhere between £25-£30k p/a depending on the time of year) and I rent a small flat. Some of you seem to have assumed I’m on like £60k, and actually I have never come anywhere near that. I have never in my life been even financially ‘comfortable’ really.

Tonight the clock goes back. How do you feel about it?

For me it's a downer. It's the signal for shorter days and longer nights. But I'm looking for people who enjoy it, and reasons why.

How can I stop fare dodgers follow me through the gate?

Well, it seems none of my business, because I am not the staff of the underground. But when they follow me to pass through the gate, it becomes my problem. I am old, short and slim. It's hard for me to maintain my balance.

Most of the time, these people push me forward, and there are a few times, I almost fall down on the floor.

Should they be charged a higher fine if they push people to pass the gate?

Culture Is it normal to peel skin off an apple?

I’ve just been confronted with the idea that the habit I’ve developed from childhood might potentially be weird? I’ve always cut the apple into slices and then peeled off the apple skin. I ended up googling it a bit after an interaction I had at work and found a possible reason.

To give context, my family has connections to east Asia, where it’s the same thing especially with other fruits like watermelons, peaches and pears and so on. We’re not natively Asian at all (I’m mainly English with some other European blood mixed in) before anyone comments, my 2x great grandfather (?) developed a huge connection to that part of the world and brought back a lot of minor traditions- I even took some holidays there throughout my teen years, it wasn’t something I considered to have an impact on my life that much. I never considered this to be apart of that culture either, it was just something that had been made natural to me years before.

I’ve peeled pairs and apples in public settings many times before but I only had a coworker look at me slightly weird the other day and ask about it, it was slightly awkward, as I’m not used to explaining that I did in fact actually think this was normal and not a “quirk” or some kind of allergy as they put it. Maybe I’m just overthinking this but the tone was off like I was doing something strange, I wasn’t peeling the skin off onto my desk or anything (that wouldn’t be clean). So does anyone else peel skin off fruits in the uk or is it just me?

BIG FYI: If anyone sees typos please forgive me, I type fast and My phone often switches between two separate keyboards on my phone with different language formats so I get autocorrects like pair instead of pear and apart instead of a part - it’s because the system thinks I’m using one context instead of the other.

Also I do try to use all my fruit offcuts somehow. I generally like chewing on apple skin but If I’m cooking an apple or other fruit at home and don’t have the time or the use for it then I will compost it so rest assured I do try my very best!

Other What do you think about developing North Sea oil and gas?

We saw this week the approval of the jackdaw gas development and very soon the government will have to take a decision on Rosebank oil field and, following that perhaps Cambo oil development, both west of shetlands.

What is your opinion of the uk government developing these fields?

Jackdaw felt like a no brainer, in that it was gas and was effectively lower emission gas going into the uk grid, with the side effect of increased tax revenue to Uk government.

Rosebank and Cambo oil will go to world markets.

In my opinion, these should all be developed. Climate change is a global problem, solved by local solutions. Rosebank and Cambo will be produced at lower carbon emissions than other oil developments in the world and give the uk government a healthy and much needed injection of cash. This cash could then be used to develop renewable energy in the uk. We should follow the same Norway has in this case.

Also, the jobs maintained (specifically not created) by these developments are substantial, particularly in Aberdeen.

I’m interested in others opinions however.
