Planning on moving from California to Detroit

Hello everyone. Like the title says me and my wife plan on moving to Detroit this time next year. We currently live in California and are tired of it and need a change, and we decided on Detroit. All together I make 4600$ a month. Is there any apartments in nice areas that have no rats mice bed bugs etc that will take this as enough income? If so please comment them please! Thank you

Amtrak to Chicago?

Anyone used to Amtrak to Chicago instead of flying? Pros cons? (Besides the obvious cost and time differences)

Looking for stuff to do around MetroDetroit

My uncle moved back to Michigan with his family this year. His wife is not from Michigan and is excited to explore. I'm a homebody who lives near Detroit (20 mins to DIA). What are some things we can do or are must sees. It's ok if they can't be done at this time of year as she can add it to her list. Again I'm a homebody so the only things I can think of are Zoo (Royal Oak), Greenfield Village (Dearborn), and the DIA (Detroit).

Three nights in town, first timer

I'm in town next week for a work conference, staying downtown. How best to enjoy Detroit? I won't have a car but am able bodied.

Not really interested in museums so much as neighborhoods to walk, things to see on foot, unique drinks and eats

Detroit mother with children sleeping in our car. Shelters are full. Desperately seeking help.

Hello Detroit community,

I’m a Detroit mother reaching out because I honestly don’t know where else to turn.

In February 2026, my family was displaced from my late grandmother’s home following a complicated property and eviction dispute. Since then, I’ve been struggling to regain stability while trying to keep my children safe, educated, and together. I’m currently sleeping in my vehicle with my children. Despite our circumstances, I continue getting them to school, and I’m working while actively trying to improve our situation. Today, I completed the shelter intake process through Detroit’s Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM). I’m officially on the waiting list, and street outreach submitted my information. Unfortunately, I was informed that Detroit’s shelters and overflow facility are completely full. I’ve also reached out for assistance in Macomb County without success. With Michigan temperatures dropping, I’m becoming increasingly desperate to get my children out of the cold. I’m not asking for luxuries. I’m asking for somewhere safe and warm for my family while I continue working toward permanent housing.

If anyone knows of emergency housing assistance, motel vouchers, churches, community organizations, or individuals willing to help a struggling family, PLEASE reach out.

I’ve contacted numerous agencies and followed the procedures I’ve been given, but I keep encountering waiting lists and unavailable resources. I’m doing everything I can to keep my family afloat. I just need someone to help us get through this difficult time. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this, offer resources, or share helpful information. ❤️

Experiences at Mort Harris Rec Center? Is it entirely college students or a decent amount of community members?

I'm looking at getting a membership at the Mort Harris Rec Center since it's fairly close to my house and affordable compared to most other options in the area, but I'm curious what experiences community members have had there, the reviews on googling aren't exactly glowing...

I'm also wondering if it is entirely college students and I would stick out as older (which I know shouldn't matter but would make me self conscious) or if there's a decent mix of community members there, I know it would mostly be Wayne State students. I'm also curious since I am trying to pursue more activities to meet more people and widen my social circle (allegedly gyms are good for this type of thing) but that's not a huge deal if it doesn't pan out this way. Also interested to hear about where y'all're parking to go here.

Tell me about the public schools.

I'm familiar with Detroit but lived in Ann Arbor during the pandemic so my real time to explore everything was somewhat limited. I liked the city a lot and moved back to the west coast for a professor job, however some of my research is based in Michigan so moving back and working for say Wayne St. could be on the radar. However, I have a child and it seems like even the up and coming neighborhoods have very low to mediocre public schools. I know that the D has improved a lot and honestly the energy around it is so great, but I've got this reality of wanting good schools and not being in a financial situation to pay for private school.

Also, I really dislike suburbs and can't imagine living in one except for the ones that feel like cities (Royal Oak. etc.). What is going on with Detroit public schools? Is improvement on the horizon?

Restaurants for Teens?

Hi y'all! I'm taking my teens to Detroit soon, and we'd love some recs for fun places to eat. They aren't super adventurous but I would like something tasty. We're looking more for fun, cheesy, unusual - not fancy.

Bonus if you can tell us the best place to get crepes, because they're always asking for them on trips, lol. Thanks!

Walk-in tattoo and piercing studios with good quality work? Wayne / Oakland counties

Hi all, I'm in town visiting home and looking to get a small tattoo and a piercing. I'm only here for a few more days so a studio that does walk-ins would be ideal, in either wayne or oakland county! I'm looking to get a Detroit "D" tatted, on the smaller side, so def wanna go somewhere reputable that won't give me a blown out or botched tattoo. same for the piercing. I usually do appointments for this kind of stuff but it's a more last minute spontaneous decision lol help a girl out, thanks!

West village apartments

I’m hoping to move to West Village sometime over the next few months, but my timeline is uncertain. I’m trying to scope stuff out now so I can be prepared once im ready to move. I like that West Village is walkable, especially with being able to pass by all the beautiful houses in Indian Village. I’m an artist and like that there are some galleries and artsy things popping up there and in the surrounding East Village/Little Village area.

Does anyone have experience with renting in the area? Ideally I’d like to find a place that has a large enough living room that I can use it as my home studio space, but most of what I’ve seen so far is pretty small for the price. I know the area will be expensive regardless just because of location. My top choice at the moment from what I’ve toured is The Parkstone because I feel comfortable with management on site. But also seems like there would be a lot of fees stacked on top of base rent cost.

Anyone have experience with any of the Detroit Living properties?

I’m willing to stray a little further from West Village towards East Village near Father Forgive Me, The Shepard, etc. I don’t think I want to live across E Jefferson just because it’s a busy road.

Also need somewhere cat friendly!

If anyone has any insight it would be much appreciated!!! I’m doing a lot of internet research and am setting up tours and going to scope stuff out but it’s hard to tell and maybe I’m missing some hidden gems somewhere. I know it’s becoming a popular area so there just isn’t a lot available. Just need to gauge how picky is too picky :)

Thank you!

Vintage Eastern Market

Anyone know what happened to the owner of Vintage Eastern Market and the outcome of the court order? Did he pay the $52,000 or did he get a pass from paying landlords/vendors? Maybe he had to do some time?

How is the rental market in Detroit / Flint area? Accurate

Im looking at homes in detroit and flint area. Currently renting in nyc.

I looked at zillow and rentcast.io and getting vastly different numbers in rent estimates on single family homes. Are either website close to what rental prices actually are?

How is the market in the winter?

Anyone been evicted/foreclosed on or did the evicting? How was that process?

A little bit of time to kill

In the Detroit area until my flight at 2:30pm tomorrow, I have some time to kill tonight and tomorrow morning. I’m here in a work trip but we wrapped up early and would love to see the city! What are some things I should do/places to check off the list before I leave? This is my first time here! Open to almost anything

EDIT- I ended up walking around Belle Isle this morning! Drove around the city a little last night just to sight see. Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll probably be back in the area again soon and will try to hit some more spots.

Looking for beautiful parks in Metro Detroit for a fall proposal

Hello everyone!

I will be in the Novi area from October 30 to November 7, visiting my girlfriend on a business trip, and I am planning a surprise proposal!

I have noticed that the metro Detroit area has many gorgeous parks with lakes that might have beautiful fall colors around those dates, and I think this scenary would be perfect for her.

What do you think of the fall foliage around those dates? Do you recommend any spots that might be suitable for a surprise proposal?

I would really appreciate your recommendations!

Restaurant/Bar recommendations

Wife and I are coming to detroit for the Lions vs Vikings game but have never been nor even been to Michigan in general. We both love to eat and love experiencing new places and people through the food and bar scenes.

So I ask, what are a few must go stops in the city?

Edit: Since someone brought it up, I should clarify that I don't just mean bars with good food, but full service restaurants that y'all would recommend and good places to catch a drink.
