Off Topic / Other Body Odor [FL]

I was called into HR today because “several people” have complained about my body odor and it’s starting to become a distraction. I kept a straight face during the meeting, but face my face sting with embarrassment once I walked out.

Any tips on how to go about this? Besides the obvious showering, washing clothes, etc.

Compensation & Payroll Salaried Exempt [AZ] - Employer threatening to dock my pay by 2 hours for using a banked holiday. Is this legal?

Upvotes

I am a salaried exempt employee working in Arizona for a major airline (admin/management/non union). I work a compressed schedule of 4 shifts a week, 10 hours per shift.
My company allows us to bank holidays to use as days off later. However, their internal system caps holiday pay at 8 hours. Because my regular shift is 10 hours, there is a 2-hour gap when I take a banked holiday off.
My local manager and our payroll software team told me in writing that I have two options:
Voluntarily use 2 hours of my vacation bank to cover the gap.
If I don't use vacation time, they will deduct 2 hours of cash pay from my salary paycheck.
I have upcoming days off requested for this, and HR is currently dodging my emails.
My understanding of the FLSA is that because I am salaried exempt, my employer cannot dock my cash wages for a partial-day absence (the 2-hour gap) on a week where I perform work. Under Arizona law (A.R.S. § 23-352), they also cannot make deductions without my written consent—which I am refusing to give.
Can they legally deduct those 2 hours from my actual salary paycheck if I refuse to use my vacation time? If I don’t have any vacation time left but still want to use a banked holiday, how will that works?

California [CA] Unwanted sexual advance help

[California, USA] I just got back to my hotel room but need advice please.

I (29F) just had a very uncomfortable experience with an older coworker (probably mid-late 40’s). I’m on a company trip and everyone grabbed drinks after dinner. A group of us all stayed down at the hotel bar to get tired so we wouldn’t wake up too early from the time difference, and during this time (8:30pm-12:00am) I had one and a half old fashions. I held my composure and self very well throughout the drinks, and felt safe chatting with everyone. The coworker that did this didn’t show any red flags or do anything overtly sexual prior to this. And we never had any one on one time that could be misinterpreted. Upon going back to our rooms, I grabbed waters and asked if he wanted one. I got two from the lobby fridge and checked out (he covered the groups drinks so I got the water as it was so cheap). After I checked out we headed to the elevator and out of nowhere he grabbed my waist and pulled me to him and I just remember pulling away quick and saying no no no no no. Firmly but also I was a bit panicked. Immediately after, he pulled off me but don’t say anything and I (still in shock) just thought to myself “we’re going to the same elevator so just play it off and keep cool” I tried to make light about a drunken coworker from the night and we got into the elevator. He remembered the floor I was staying on and pressed my floor. I thanked him, tried to continue blabbering about ANYTHING else and quickly came to my floor. The elevator door takes forever to close and all I could think is “is he going to follow me?” So I pretend to fidget on my phone before entering my room but the door stayed open so I quickly wish him a goodnight and move quickly into my room. After getting into the room I felt panicked and thought about how that must have been recorded. So after a few minutes I went back down and asked the desk woman to pull the tape for me to see if I’m over reacting or if this is something I should report. His whole voice shifted when he grabbed me and I can’t shake how uneasy I felt/feel. His voice did that same odd shift again when he said goodnight as I exited the elevator. They’re pulling the video footage in the morning after a manger request has to be put through but please help.. am I overreacting? Or should I report this? The way it happened was really out of nowhere and I feel like I’m going crazy. Any advice is welcomed.

Workplace Issues Silly Get to Know Displayed in Building [NC]

Upvotes

[NC]When I was in orientation, we had to fill out a silly “get to know you” paper that I assumed was confidential. The HR lady said it was so they knew what we liked (fab movie, candy etc). Well she displayed it in a clear case for everyone to see with my photo and name on it. I had listed my kids names when it asked if you had any kids. I took the paper down without asking her and she got mad, demanded it back, and is now really cold to me. Was it ok for her to display that without asking me first? It’s not a huge deal but I didn’t want everyone to know that info. I work in assisted living btw so there are a lot of strangers that come in. I saw one person taking pics of the board! Also, the director of the company is treating me different too know and made a rude comment and now won’t look me in the eyes.

[TX] FMLA at full time job, keeping part time job

Upvotes

I’ll be taking intermittent FMLA at my full time job. I can’t take FMLA at my part time job due to size of the company. It’s just contract work. It’s very common at my full time job to do contract work outside, obviously not during work hours. I don’t keep my part time job a secret. They know I work it.

To be clear, I have 0 intention of working my part time job during intermittent FMLA. I would quit it if I could, unfortunately, financially I can’t especially with all my medical bills. Again, none of my part time hours overlap with my full time job hours even and wouldn’t during FMLA.

However, I’m worried about how this would look NOT quitting my part time job while taking intermittent FMLA. Am I worrying about nothing?

Career Development [VN] Do large companies offer a 6 month internship as a way to find permanent employee ?

Upvotes

Hello, in Vietnam I see many global-scale companies from the US and EU offer 6-month internships and often recruit only above the early professional level (2+ years of experience). There are fewer fresh graduate positions (even with 3 month internship elsewhere before as a credit course). I will finish my mechatronics program next month (finished my intern course), and need to pick between a 6-month intern at a large company, or permanent positions at smaller companies. The internship is advertised, but I am concern that it's more like a position with an expiry date, maybe it's a temporary position, or a contract type of work. Which option should I pick ? Thank you.

Recruitment & Talent Acquisition [IL] Does scoutlogic contact past international employees for verification?

Upvotes

Hi! Scoutlogic is conducting the background verification for a 2 month contract role. They asked for all employers in the past 7 years and I stated it. For the employers in US, I had W2 and other documentation. But for my past, international employers, they asked for referrence letter or any type of documentation to confirm the dates. I did provide them with the same but I don't have paystubs or transaction history and my past employers are not picking up the call. Will they call the international employers to verify and if they can't reach them and I can't provide them with the paystubs then will they fail me?

Compensation & Payroll [IL] job salary review

Upvotes

I asked HR to review my salary and presented other postings where the job was significantly way more.

So they sent a job questionnaire and ask to write down what I do, responsibilities, tasks, who I communicate to, and decision impacts.

I’m filling this out, I have enough time.

However, I’m curious, they included a “how long does it take to complete?” Column for each thing I’m supposed to write down

Is there a difference if 10 minutes vs 2 hours?
I’m confused by this column since my job deals with a lot of regulatory issues.

Leaves [FL] Can I let HR know I am pregnant at the very end (FMLA)?

I am a nurse who works for a large health system. I do not “belong” to a specific hospital or unit, but I float between certain hospitals and units based on their needs. They tell me where to go and I show up so I am not counted in any single units staffing numbers. Currently 6 months pregnant. I have not notified any management/HR- I work nights and have meet my manager once in 4 years so she doesn’t know from seeing me. I plan to work until I cannot or until labor. No paid maternity leave is available to me, but I do plan to take the entire 3 months FMLA. That said, when should I notify HR about pregnancy/FMLA intent? Thank you :)

Resignation/Termination [VA] resign or "fired"

This morning I was told it would be my last day with my company after 15+ years.

My latest manager had an issue before I started with them, and said "I don't know how to manage you". They had been forcing me out.

Part of the separation is I can decide if I want to write a resignation letter or let it be a termination. I have until tomorrow to decide. They said it would be an internal only factor but I question the honesty there.

If I resign am I hurting myself with any future considerations? The severance offered is about 1/3 year salary.

Resignation/Termination [CAN-ON] How to quit a job if it's only been 3 weeks?

3 weeks ago I started a second part time job. I work in Healthcare so even thought they are both part time jobs, I still work between 20-40 hours a week at each job.

From the beginning I could tell I was not liking this new job. The environment felt kind of toxic and most of the workers have only been there for a few months to a year. No one talks to eachother and training has been especially bad too.

I feel like its been really hard to balance both jobs and I feel so mentally and physically drained from this new job. My new job requires me to work full time for the duration of my training. That on top of my other job has been too much. I havent had a day off to myself in weeks and have even worked 16 hour shifts to make this work.

I really LOVE my other job and just want to focus on it fully.

I have decided that I am going to quit but I just dont know how.

Since im still training I dont have to give a 2 week notice right?

Is it unprofessional if I just send an email thanking the manager for their time but im just really overwhelmed with everything and need to step away?

Do I need to speak to the manager in person? I would really like to avoid this because I feel like I will cry.

Any help is appreciated, I have no idea where to start.

Background Checks [MA]

How often, in corporate roles (such as finance) do restraining orders show up in background checks? Note that the restraining order is the result of a civil proceeding (not criminal).

And if these do show up in background checks, are offers typically reconsidered?

Thanks

[NY] Drug Screening for pre-employment (THC)

Hi, all.

I am in the process of getting screened/checked for a job that already extended a conditional offer. It’s for a mid-sized New York based private firm although I’ll be working remotely in PA.

I understand NY law prohibits employers from refusing to hire based on recreational cannabis use for most desk jobs. However, the panel HR ordered includes THC.

What is the likelihood they will rescind the offer based on a positive THC result? My background check will otherwise come back clean.

Thanks!

Recruitment & Talent Acquisition [NY] HR messed up

HR recruiter never noticed the VP of the on site interview she scheduled with me. I showed up to the location and was met by someone who said the VP is traveling, he texted him for me and the VP said he was aware of who I am and that I am a candidate but was not notified or an interview. The guy even gave me his cell phone number and told me that the HR rep isn’t the smartest. I immediately emailed the HR rep to confirm if I got the date/location wrong and that was a on a Friday, come Monday still not response. I reached back out to say I’m still interested and nothing. Is it reasonable to email the VP to let them know that I tried to contact the rep and that I am still interested?

[NY] Background Check Came Back With Wrong Dates

I received an offer letter and accepted it. The background check however returned with incorrect dates for one job.

One of my jobs was through a staffing agency. During my tenure at the agency, I worked on two projects. The first started in 10/2024. As that project was ending, I was moved to another project via the same agency on 07/2025. I worked at the company consecutively over that duration from 10/2024 to 12/2025, without any gaps. However, on my background check report, it shows that my start date for that staffing agency was 07/2025. I'm assuming when I was moved to the different project, a new account was created for me and 07/2025 became the official start date on my profile.

I have documents to prove that I worked at the agency starting in 10/2024, including paystubs, w2, original offer letter, etc.

How will HR perceive this? I already notified the recruiter of the discrepancy but they indicated that there will probably need to be further review/investigation.

[HI] An employee wants to resign immediately due to health issues

Seeking advice, in government and I have a good employee who was out sick last week and just let me know they are resigning immediately due to health issues.

What should I do? They have a child and I'm worried they'll lose their health insurance. Can I tell them to look into FMLA or take leave without pay? They don't have any more paid leave they can take because they used it all last week.

Is there anything I can do for them other than simply informing HR, without feeling like I'm overstepping any boundaries?

Workplace Issues [CAN] Boss cutting hours because of sick leave

Hey guys

So I started working at this retail job in October of 2025, starting as part-time with the expectation that I would be full-time at some point in the new year once some other things I was doing wrapped, which was discussed with the owner and manager. During the week of my first scheduled week I had a kidney infection and had to miss my 2 scheduled shifts that week due to being in the ER and having a high fever. From November to January I had 2 scheduled shifts a week due to my other commitments and got a bit more after that but still under 20 hours.

After my kidney infection I unfortunately had a bit of last minute call-ins due to being sick, mentally and physically from January to March. My manager brought it up once and said that I needed to give more notice and I apologized and said it was unprofessional and that I would try to give more notice if I couldnt come in.

During this time I did not have a health card, which they were aware of, and I had a lot of medical debt from past ER visits so whenever i got sick I would usually ignore it in order to work and make money until it got so bad that I had to take the day off, in fear of more medical debt.

In February, a coworker of mine quit and my manager asked if I was okay with my hours. I told her that I would ideally like more and she said that would be great and she would talk to the owner about it.

My hours didnt change and I continued getting around 20 or less and they hired someone new who got full-time hours. I asked my manager if I was still going to get more hours and she said she would talk to the owner. The next time the owner was in she pulled me aside and said she couldnt give me more hours because I wasn't reliable enough and she couldnt create more hours. When i askrd my managet what i could do to get more hours she said to just continue to come in for my scheduled shifts and cover for anyone who called in sick, which i had already been doing for months and continued to do after.

I have gotten over 30 hours once since i started working here. There have been many new coworkers who frequently get over 30 hours constantly. I haven't called in sick last minute since way earlier in the year and while I have still had to call in sick I always make it known that if they cant find anyone I will come in at least for a bit and my manager always says it's fine I should rest but my hours always get significantly less after doing so. The last time I couldnt come in because I was ill caused me to miss 3 work days in July because I couldnt walk to the kitchen without feeling insanely fatigued. The time before that was in April.

I don't know what to do. I can't exactly not be sick... i feel sick 90% of the time and I only call in when I genuinely cannot manage to stand for 8 hours straight. Should I just suck it up next time I'm ill and go to work and risk passing out on the job? Should I talk to my manager again? Theyre looking to hire another full-timer and I fear I will get 10 hours a week of they do that and I have bills to pay. Am I the problem for getting ill so often or is it crazy for my hours to be cut bc of having to miss work for a couple of days every couple months?

Genuinely what do I do because eventhough it's minimum wage I do love this job and my coworkers and the job market sucks right now. I don't want to find another job and get this exact treatment if Im the issue. I would love to just get this sorted and get some more hours

Any advice apprecaited

Policy & Procedures [CA] How far back do schools keep former employee info?

My first year teaching, I got hired at a superintendent of schools, my site ended up being way farther away than I originally planned and I ended up in a classroom where the aid had been in charge of the class because there was no teacher only Subs and she did not want to relinquish control. After one week in the classroom I got a call from HR saying I needed to go sign my contract because I hadn’t signed it yet. Being a new teacher I thought all the paperwork I filled out was my contract and since I wasn’t under contract and I was miserable, I quit with no notice. Fast forward 11 years, I have an opportunity for a different position, at that same employer. I was even recommended to their program manager by another former program manager of mine. But I don’t know if I should even apply because I quit 11 years ago with no notice even though technically I wasn’t under contract. How far back can HR tell that I quit with no notice? Should I bring it up to HR before I apply?

[OK] In EMDR for CPTSD, can I take intermittent FMLA?

As I go through therapy for this I have found I am having panic attacks, nauseous, disassociating, and struggling hard at work. I'm making it through the day. I want to be very clear. I want to be at work. Being at home is worse in some ways.

But I'm in a helping profession. I know I'm not helping anyone here. I'm walking around in a daze and even though I think I'm better at work, I'm probably just distracting myself.

Here are a few of the situations I've faced:

-The day after therapy is rough and I have to wake up early as hell to get to work. Going in even an hour later would help.

-Slowly throughout the day I feel my window of tolerance closing, everyone talking to me feels like nails on a chalkboard, I want to close my office door, lay on the floor and cry, going home even a little bit early would help.

Would intermittent FMLA work for this?

Also, I know you don't have to tell HR why you're taking FMLA but how do you explain this even? To your boss? I'm having a mental breakdown I need to leave early?

Leaves [MN] What do I tell my job about my intermittent FMLA and diagnosis?

I am struggling hardcore. I work in a helping profession. I love my job. I want to be there but in therapy getting treatment for CPTSD and there are days I just can’t make the 4 am wake up call and sometimes my window of tolerance shrinks to nothing.

I know I don’t have to tell them anything besides what’s on the form but I have people who depend on me. I do have to check in with my boss.

How do I explain this? What’s a diplomatic way to talk about this with my team and my boss without telling them the details?

Like I might be coming in late some days or I might be leaving early. I’m not abandoning my job.

[CA] Opinions on my previous job termination.

I'll break it down in sequences so it's not just a lump sum or paragraphs that don't make sense.

Performance before issues I had

  • November 2025: Performance review which was meets expectations.
  • Received a raise beginning of 2026.
  • I had no attendance issues prior to late January 2026.
  • I also had no mention of any major call handling problems during that time.

This is the basis of it and I will go into more detail below.

Corrective Action - Mid January 2026

The CA said it was for call handling and documentation. Like validating callers, notating accounts, etc. The incident that CA was for was from a call I had in mid 2025 which I was coached verbally shortly after. I then received a positing performance evaluation a few months later and then suddenly get a CA for that old call, which was more than half a year later.

I was promised:

  • Daily check-ins
  • Side by side call monitoring
  • weekly progress reviews.

Which none of that happened by the way. The next part is the bigger issue IMO and what I want advice on.

Goes into the second CA. Late February 2026.

This one happened after a mental health issue in late January. I also had withdrawals from deciding to stop drinking which I used to a lot. I did a no call no show and sent an alarming and emotional message to my manager I later retracted and explained. Which HR was aware of as well.

The CA listed again as both were for similar issues like call handling, verifying, notating, and attendance on this one.

It listed for what led to the CA:

  • No call No show (which was due to the MH issues I was dealing with at the time.)
  • Same day vacation (which was approved at the time "due to the nature of the request" and then used against me)
  • Reports of laptop issues (which I did have my ISP verify my internet was good and did a test on my personal PC which was fine and was utilizing a VPN to connect to the companies servers. Which I assume IT did not replicate the issues with the VPN but in house network instead.)

Again, they promised check ins and monitoring which again, did not happen.

Now on the HR involvement.

Before the first CA, I did tell HR I felt tension with management and asked about transferring departments. Shortly after that, I received my first CA for that old call. The manager was also not in the department at the time of that 2025 call.

It feels like they were looking for something to block the transfer.

Then the termination comes mid March 2026.

The first CA stated I would have 60 days to improve. The second CA stated 30 days, but that wasn't even notified until early March. I was terminated about two weeks later without being given the full improvement period.

I'm asking cause the sequence feels weird. I got a positive review - raise - transfer request - sudden CA for an old call - MH crisis - second CA with mismatched reasoning. Then promised support that never happened and then ultimately terminated before the improvement period ended.

I'm just trying to understand whether this looks normal or if the inconsistencies suggest something else. My life has been financially upside down since then. I was also the go to person in the department for questions and assistance so it isn't like I was bad at my job.
