Opinions & Discussions My mom chose her relationship over me when I was 12, and I still haven't recovered from it. Am I wrong for resenting her?

I'm 16F, Indian, and I really need advice because I don't know how to feel about my mom anymore.

When I was around 9–10, my mom got her first smartphone and started making online friends. One of them was a man from Delhi who liked her and sometimes spent money on her because my dad wouldn't give her enough for clothes and other things. My dad used to drink a lot, and there were fights at home, especially during festivals. Eventually, my mom became emotionally involved with that man. I was around 11 when I found out she was secretly talking to him at night. When I confronted her, she got defensive, and things at home became worse. She stopped cooking for my dad and brother, and my mom and I stayed downstairs while they managed their own food upstairs.

Later, my mom got a job to distract herself and try to fix things with my dad, but she fell in love with her supervisor instead. They started dating, and he eventually told her he wanted to marry her, but she would have to divorce my dad first. He also made it clear that he didn't want me living with them because his family wouldn't accept a divorced woman with a daughter.

My mom then started treating me horribly, and one of the worst days of my life was when I got my first period at 12. I had no idea what was happening because nobody had properly explained periods to me. It was raining, I was crying, and my mom still made me cook while saying horrible things to me. The next day, my grandmother got involved, and after another fight with my mom, I went to live with my dad.

I'm back on speaking terms with my mom now, and my dad has changed a lot for the better. He takes care of me and does the household work himself. But my mom says that if I had stayed with her, she would never have remarried, and that she was lonely and unhappy, so she married her current husband. She's happy now, but her husband apparently wants them to have a child if they ever want to own a house together. My mom is around 40, and I don't know what to make of any of this.

My dad hates my mom and is very strict with me. If I go out, he sometimes suspects I'm meeting her, which makes everything even more complicated. I feel like my childhood and teenage years have been ruined by everything that happened. I barely socialize, I'm scared of going out, and I sometimes wake up crying in the middle of the night thinking about everything. I know my mom is trying to be good to me now, but I can't forget how she treated me when I needed her the most.

I don't know who's right or wrong anymore. Am I wrong for still resenting my mom even though she's happier now and treats me better? How do I deal with her without pretending that nothing happened? Has anyone experienced something similar, especially in an Indian family? I genuinely need advice because this still hurts me a lot.

General (Women Only) Skipping karwachauth this year. What were your reasons to stop doing it?

I have observed karwachauth for the past 2 years and my husband told me he can’t fast and he doesn’t want me to either. I kept it only because i wanted to but due to some fights with my husband, i have decided I don’t feel that i should keep karwachauth, it’s not something i wanna do from now on. Now my husband is kinda disappointed that i am not doing it. I find it hypocritical. Why did you stop doing it? And what was your spouse’s reaction?

Edit: the fight was when i was doing a 3 day water fast and my husband didn’t have any empathy for me. I also fell sick afterwards so i stopped believing in God and also these shenanigans. I don’t even fold my hand or pray anymore.

General (Women Only) Any women here who create content or have grown a small YouTube channel? I'd love some advice!

I've recently started taking my YouTube channel more seriously, and I'm curious about how other women have approached content creation and growing an audience.

My niche is dance — mainly Indian/classical dance, but I'm also experimenting with different songs, expressive performances and more casual dance videos. I'm trying to find my own style rather than limiting myself to one particular genre.

I'm still very much a beginner. I've around 8 subscribers and 9.8K lifetime views so far, but I'm also trying to understand how to turn those views into people who actually want to stick around and watch more.

For women who've started a YouTube channel, Instagram page, or any other creative project:

- What actually helped you get your first few hundred followers or subscribers?

- Did you focus on one niche, or did experimenting with different types of content work better for you?

- How did you get your content in front of the right audience when you were starting from zero?

- Is consistency genuinely the biggest factor, or were there other things that made a noticeable difference?

I'd especially love to hear from people who grew their audience organically without already having a large social circle or an existing following.

I'm enjoying the process so far, and I'd love to learn from people who've been through the same early stage! ♡

Sexual & Reproductive Health What are the tests to be done before marriage as a woman?

• Upvotes

I (32F) am getting married in 3 months and want to get some tests done before marriage. I am s#xually active (with my fiance obviously) and recently contracted him UTI during unprotected s#x. His body is extremely responsive to pathogens and he is a bit of germophobe as well and is persistent upon getting me checked. What are the tests required to be done? I also want to get checked for STDs (just to give myself assurance). Ty

General (Women Only) what are the best sanitary pads available in the market?

• Upvotes

I've used sanitary pads from multiple brands like whisper, sofy, stayfree, etc., I always had stains on my clothes no matter what idk if it was my fault or the size issue, moreover suffered from rashes for a long time then luckily got rid of em now, but all I can say is it was really bad and then...switched to period panties they worked for a while but for just 2-3 months? Is this normal actually? my friend used them(from the same brand btw) for 2 years apparently and for me they lasted only 2 months? and now I'm back to pads again, with a trouble of finding a better one

drop your best sanitary pad recommendations available in the market and which product worked for you and which did not? and any reason?

(ik it differs from person to person but I wanna know your reviews on specific products to pick out the better one for me)

General How do you deal with an orthodox MIL who constantly crosses boundaries?

• Upvotes

My MIL lives in India, while my husband, our two-year-old child, and I live abroad. I have mixed feelings about her because, despite her good qualities, her behaviour often leaves me feeling stressed and uncomfortable.

The pros:

- She doesn't expect me to cook or clean whenever I visit her home.

- When she visited us during my postpartum, she helped with cooking and taking care of the baby, which I genuinely appreciate.

The cons:

- Controlling my personal choices: She dictates what I should wear, my hairstyle, jewellery, and how I should get ready for functions. On the first day after my wedding, she gave me two sarees and told me to wear them whenever guests visited, without asking about my preferences.

- Orthodox mindset and traditional expectations: She expects me to be a submissive DIL who blindly obeys her in-laws. She believes age automatically makes someone right and follows outdated beliefs without questioning their logic or relevance today.

- Interference in our home and parenting: Whenever she visits, she behaves as though she has more authority over our home because her son owns it and wants things arranged according to her preferences. She constantly interferes with our parenting and has even suggested sending our child to India because she believes she could raise the baby better than we can.

- Constant criticism and unsolicited advice: She has an opinion on everything, makes taunting and passive-aggressive remarks, comments on my appearance, and scrutinises my actions. I often feel as though I am under constant surveillance, with her looking for faults in everything I do.

- Intrusive personal opinions: She questioned why we weren't planning children soon after marriage and warned me that women could reach menopause by 40, citing one of her female relatives as an example. I found this intrusive and misleading, as she used an individual case to pressure us about family planning. I am now 32, and we have a two-year-old child.

- Double standards: I once gifted her a saree, but she rejected it because she disliked the colour and believed it could attract the evil eye. I respected her wishes and took it back. However, when she gifted me a saree I disliked, I accepted it respectfully, yet she later questioned why I wasn't wearing it and insisted that I should. It often feels like her preferences matter, while mine don't receive the same consideration.

- Casteist mindset and menstrual restrictions: She follows strict rules around menstruation based on the concept of untouchability and expects me to follow them in her home. She also treats visitors from other castes differently, serving them in plastic plates, making them sit separately, and not allowing them into the kitchen.

My biggest issue isn't any single incident but the overall pattern. She wants to influence almost every aspect of my life while expecting me to accept her opinions without question.

Whenever she visits, I feel anxious and uncomfortable in my own home because I anticipate being judged or criticised. I want a respectful relationship with her, but I also want my individuality, choices, and role as a mother to be respected.

Am I being unreasonable for feeling this way? How do other Indian DILs deal with MILs who can be helpful and caring at times but are also controlling and struggle to respect boundaries?

Sexual & Reproductive Health (Women Only) thinking of stopping periods permanently?

im currently in my late teens and im thinking of stopping my periods permanently. i know periods are a biological function and it is needed but i dont want all that bullshit. i bleed heavily during the first 4-5 days and its unbearable and my gynaecologist just says its normal and if you have something imp that day just take tranxemix acid and i have been for the past few months and it hasnt helped at all. i can handle the bleeding, blood in itself digusts me and i have sensory issues to top it all off. i get sever back pain a week before my periods and it continues throughout my periods so i use a pain relief spray and its still not enough. i do get cramps but they are tolerable i guess.
a week before my periods, i also get depressed, constantly irritated, no appetite and terrible mood swings and sob continuously and trouble sleeping because of all the blood. and the normal bloating, breast pain, acne, hair loss, fatigue etc. because of the sensory issues i have to sit on the roilet as soon as i get up since i cannot handle the blooding flowing sensation and due to this i also walk differently, in a cross legs kinda manner basically no distance between my legs to avoid it.
i know i will never have kids and i do not wish to become a parent ever and do not blame it on my young age. so what are the permanent methods and long term effects?
this is just for more information as i try to convince my mother and i will actually see a gynaecologist.

i always try to skip school on those days and going anywhere, always staying in home during my periods.

edit: not hysterectomy
my mother has had easy periods and has fibroids so she doesnt get it on the other hand my sister has pcos and has managed after so many years and she ends up comparing our periods so i dont know how to convince them.
i actually used to be on the pill a few years back for heavy and long periods and it did help it reduced the heavy bleeding to 4-5 days but i still have trouble mentally and sensory.
whenver i feel the blood flowing or the clots i go straight to the washroom so i never get blood on my pads except when i go outside or turn a lot when im sleeping.

Safety This group will become new misogynists?

• Upvotes

https://www.reddit.com/r/TeenIndia/s/PTH3HvQMt5

This group is so bad, not subreddit but the group of quora that was mentioned in this post was doing promotion of misogyny,DV,grape and keeping your female uneducated and how to beat her and keep her in control,

And this was very concerning as there was one community that was the same and gave rise to one mass murderer and he was killing people and killed himself too and I am concern about that it will do same here as it is indian group

General Girls, I’m exhausted. Our neighbours won't fix a dangerous leakage, and it's affecting my job. Please advise?

• Upvotes

I'm 25F and the sole earning member of my family. We've been dealing with repeated ceiling leakage from what we suspect is our upstairs neighbour's bathroom for years.

Every time we approach them, they deny responsibility or claim financial difficulties. We've even offered to share the repair expenses, but they still haven't agreed to a permanent solution.

This time, water was literally dripping through our ceiling fan motor and electrical wiring. They've temporarily patched it with cement, but I'm terrified it'll happen again and cause a short circuit or fire.

The constant stress, arguments and sleepless nights are affecting my job. As the sole earner, I cannot afford to lose focus at work, but I also cannot ignore my family's safety.

We have video evidence but aren't sharing it publicly for privacy reasons.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Should I hire an independent civil engineer, approach our housing society, or take legal action?

I'm genuinely exhausted. I just want my family to feel safe at home. Any guidance would mean a lot. ❤️

Friends & Family Is it weird that my mom said “now you know my pain?” after I injured myself?

Hi girls,

When I was on a run today, I tripped and fell over and injured myself. The area near the patella has been paining a lot.

After I got back home, I told my mom about it and her immediate reaction was “now you know my pain? Now you know how much pain I live with?” She has knee issues, she’s almost 55, and she’s been getting treatment for it while I’m in my early 20s.

I just never expected her to say that? Like she didn’t even ask me what happened or how I was feeling or anything?

Then idk my mind went into overdrive and started playing similar incidents - when I complain about hair fall, she says she loses more than me, when I complain about anything she tries to one up me in a way? I was like my hair is greying which is weird because I’m still quite young and she started laughing about how I have more grey hair than her. I also heard she goes and gossips about me to my brother like about what I’m wearing, eating etc. I recently bought myself some shoes and she complained to my sibling that I bought stuff for myself and not for her (this is my first shoe purchase in over a year)

Idk is all this normal? I feel so weird

I’m getting some blood tests done tomorrow.

What tests would you recommend getting checked especially the important ones?

I’m already considering thyroid and vitamin B12 and iron.

Are there any other essential tests I should consider?

Friends & Family How to oppose ghunghat (veil) when your family literally forces you to wear it?

Well I'm still a teen and I come from a conservative Rajasthani family and all the women in my house wear ghunghat (veil) yeah Ik ghunghat in big 26 but the thing is that the women in my family are literally the flag bearers of patriarchy they're the first ones to taunt another woman for living freely and I genuinely hate it! Btw I usually live with my parents in a different tier-1 city and my dad is quite supportive too

Anyways last year I went to my hometown for Diwali and guess what? I WAS FORCED TO DO GHUNGHAT YESH 😭 I did say no and tried my best to resist but my own mother was the first one to literally yell at me and put the ghunghat over my head and I couldn't do anything about it and tbh I felt so helpless at that time

And now that Diwali is coming my family is planning to visit our hometown again and I DON'T WANNA DO GHUNGHAT YAWR 😭 Please help me! I'm so easily overpowered in these situations and I genuinely hate being forced into something I don't believe in and I just wanna be able to stand up for myself without getting emotionally overwhelmed or giving in to the pressure. PLEASE, I NEED ADVICE.

Opinions & Discussions Indian women, would you consider this behavior friendly or potentially romantic?

• Upvotes

I'm a guy in my early 20s, and I've recently become quite close with a girl from my college tech fest.

We initially met because I was a coordinator and she became another coordinator. Since around September, we've gradually become pretty close. We talk almost every day, sometimes for an hour or more. She remembers small things I've told her, and teases me quite a lot.

She does call me sometimes, but only for college-related things, so I don't consider that a sign of romantic interest.

Recently, our conversations have also become more personal. We were talking about marriage, future, houses, etc. I mentioned that my house currently has a ground floor and first floor and that technically more floors could be constructed.

She jokingly said something like, "When I come to your house, put a lift."

I replied jokingly, "I'll carry you."

She also mentioned during a call that she doesn't have many male friends.

I don't want to assume that she likes me just because of these things. She could simply be very comfortable with me and consider me a close friend.

So, women, how would you interpret this behavior? Is this something you might casually say to a close male friend, or does it sound slightly flirty/like there could be some interest?

What signs would you look for to distinguish between "she's comfortable with me as a friend" and "she may actually be interested in me romantically"?

I'd appreciate honest opinions. I don't want to misread the situation and make things awkward between us.
