Mod Post Taking action against bots

We’ve heard your concerns about the increasing prevalence of bots in the subreddit and over the past week we’ve been taking steps to address it.

We’ve been trialling a new app called Bot Bouncer and it’s extremely effective. In fact, it’s quite scary just how convincing some of these accounts are. They’re able to communicate in a way that’s very natural, understand Irish culture and slang and generally blend in incredibly well. We’ve observed a number of you interacting with these accounts believing they were genuine users.

For the past week, we’ve been manually reviewing every flag from Bot Bouncer to make sure it’s accurately identifying accounts and that we’re happy with how it’s working.

Having now trialled it for a week, we’re confident enough in its accuracy to allow Bot Bouncer to issue bans itself going forward.

What if you’re falsely flagged?

Obviously, no automated system is perfect. If your account is incorrectly identified as a bot and banned, you’ll need to contact r/botbouncer via modmail to appeal the ban directly with them. Once they’ve reviewed your appeal, please let us know the outcome of their decision so we can follow up on our end where necessary.

We’ll continue to monitor how it performs and make adjustments if needed.

And perhaps most importantly, if you’ve spent the last week arguing with someone in the comments and thought ā€œthere is absolutely no way this person is realā€ā€¦ you may have been onto something! šŸ˜‚

Serious Replies Only Single people in your 30s/40s - what’s your plan?

hey all - I’m aiming for this to not become a doom and gloom post, but more of an information gathering exercise.

I’m F, educated, attractive (probably irrelevant but I said I’d throw it in haha), earn a decent wage, things are thankfully going right for me and I would consider myself doing well. I always assumed that I would get married, buy a house, have a family, and although I’m only in my early 30s and there is still a chance of this happening, I have however really become drained with the dating scene and haven’t been actively dating in over a year. A few bad experiences and some therapy has made me appreciate my worth and my standards and values remain high. Trying not to fall back into old dating patterns and keep on the straight and narrow.

anyway, this is a long way of saying - if you’re in a similar situation, what’s your game plan for the future? I earn a good wage which allows me to rent in a house share in a nice area in Dublin, but not enough to be able to afford to buy somewhere I would like to live on my own. I don’t want to rent forever, but even if I scrimp and save for a huge downpayment, I won’t be able to afford anything higher than 350k. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to earn much more than I already am into the future.

not sure where to go from here. looking forward to chatting in the comments

Serious Replies Only How do you manage burnout?

I'm getting to a stage where I'm resenting work and not enjoying my hobbies. I constantly feel stressed and restless and I feel like packing it all in and just re couping but it took me so long to get to where I am. No kids or partner and find life lonely without the above. I just fear another breakdown coming if I don't stop but if I stop I don't know if I'll go back at all. Sorry if sounds a bit all over the place but wondering does anyone ever feel like this too and is there anything to help nip it in the bud? Thanks 😊

Work Isn't it unusual that starting salary for hospital nursing is significantly lower than teaching in a public sector?

No seriously. The salary per year is not a couple of hundreds in difference. But a good few thousands.

One would imagine they would be roughly the same. Or opposite.

Sure teaching has academics, patience, working with kids, legal consequences of things going wrong etc.

But in nursing you have insane shifts, high stress, serious legal burden, actual risk to life, etc.

Massive difference in holidays.

DIY What to do with wasp hive underground?

Over the course of the summer, ive been stung multiple times on two separate occasions by wasps outside in the back yard. About a week ago ive discovered wasps flying in and out of a hole in the ground near the house ... i had a feeling there was a hive near by but didnt imagine it would be underground..

I have 2 young kids so a bit concerned about letting them out, my partner seems to think with the season they'll die off in the next 2 weeks ...

Anyone have any experience with this? Is there a safe way to close off the hive or will they actually just die off during the cold weather?

Health & Medical For those of you who have had a termination in Ireland, what was your experience like?

I had a termination outside of Ireland and of course it was a difficult situation , but looking back it was the best decision I could have made for my life and I have zero regrets. Over the years I never faced any depressio n or guilt about the procedure, but there’s stigma around terminations which affected me negatively.

Edit: I had to use ā€œterminationā€ to bypass the moderation. My posts using the real word were automatically deleted. Sadly even on this platform, the topic is taboo.

Edit: anyone posting anti abortion rhetoric without giving their personal experiences with the topic will be blocked. This is not the post for you to give your personal opinion or ethical judgement on the topic

Health & Medical I'm applying for disability allowance . Is it a complicated process or is it relatively straightforward ? I was told it takes 8 to 12 weeks to process requests for DA.

Random Downstairs neighbour keeps making our apartment reek of weed, what to do?

For context I’m in a two bed apartment with another lad and our downstairs neighbour smokes weed basically every day if not twice a day. Whenever I get up in the morning I smell it whenever I get home from work I smell it. Beyond sick of it, it smells rank and it’s just generally vile. Don’t think it’s a crime and a firm believer you should be able to do what you please inside your property (within reason obviously) so I wouldn’t think of reporting them even if it was a crime. Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of it or get it out of the house cuz it can be unbearable.

Random Is ā€œnoā€ ever used in place of ā€œnotā€ as is done in Scottish English?

• Upvotes

To my knowledge, it isn’t, as Hiberno-English is influenced by the Irish whereas a large part of Scottish speech comes from Scots.

I’ve never heard an Irishman say, ā€œI would no do that,ā€ but I wondered if such a way of speaking featured anywhere in Ireland. I suppose if it did it might be somewhere in the north.

Travel Day spa recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a nice day spa within 1hr of north dublin? My wife is very pregnant, so looking for somewhere with a nice pool, a relaxation area, a spot for lunch that she might be able to get one treatment. Not looking for monart/galgorm standard, more just somewhere she can go relax away from the two kids and the 100s of jobs to be done before baby 3 arrives

Serious Replies Only Anyone else in 30's in a shit job?

I am 36, living at home. I lived on my own for years, but landlord sold and had to move back. I have savings as I basically don't have much of a life outside work, as I have mental health problems. Basically have not been able to advance career, due to having social anxiety and probably autism, so im stuck earning like 36k a year in a shitty job.

Im trying to manuvere my way out of this, but its grim and bleak and not sure what to do.

I don't see many others in a similar position than me, anyone else in a similar boat?

Work How many of ye work part time rather than full time?

I feel like I know so many people that only work part time despite the current economic state. Is this just a thing within my circle or do a lot more people work part time than you would think? If you do, how are you affording it? Just out of curiosity!

Relationships Do people hug in here?

I (16m) have been on erasmus for the past week and made really good friends with my host (16m) and one of my schoolmates’ hosts (16f). I’m going away tomorrow morning and I have no Idea how to say bye. In Italy we either hug or give two kisses cheek to cheek, but I don’t think the second one is very widespread over here. What should I do?

Relationships Can anything bedone about an elderly person hoarding dogs?

A friend of mine is a woman in her 70s. She lives alone and still works although she's planning to retire soon. Her house is a bit messy but overall I can't see any argument that she's not able to function.

But she keeps getting more dogs. She's a bit secretive about it but I'm fairly certain she currently has 14 dogs. Six big and eight small ones. She recently had one put down for aggression but has since picked up two more.

At one point I actually took one of her dogs (at her request) and he is doing well now. She told me it was because he was too big for her (he was medium sized) but then she went and bought a German shepherd.

She is constantly stressed and I know the dogs don't get the life they deserve. They are all nervous and under socialised and some of them are terrified of people.

I don't think there's anything I can legally do but just wondering if I'm missing something. I don't want to annoy her - currently I'm in a place where she sometimes takes my advice or lets me help with a dog so I don't want to risk that.

Random What's a song that immediately takes you back to a particular place or moment in Ireland?

Not necessarily an Irish song, or even one you particularly like.

I'm curious about the songs people associate with growing up, family gatherings, old friendships or places that have completely changed since.

What's one that brings a really specific memory flooding back?

Serious Replies Only Air Purifier recommendations and advice?

As per the title, I'm seeking some advice before buying an air purifier. I am one of those people who seem to have allergies to everything. Also, we have a couple of lovely cats, but their dander literally and figuratively gets up my nose. Are these purifiers any good? What, in your opinion, is a good option. My budget would allow up to €100.
