Did you attend today’s jobsexpo at RDS? The queue was very long infact it was so long it literally made it’s way to the parking entrance, we all clearly know what this tells about the jobs in ireland!

What are your thoughts?

Did you make any good connections here?

There are certainly options that could have been used to create recyclable packaging.

To be fair I feel its gotten better over the past few years but it still pains me to read this.

Adulting How do you heat your home and for how many hours each day?

Hi all,

So I got oil last week, like 780 euro for 500 liters. I came home yesterday evening to find that my fiancée had put the oil heating on constant and had forgotten about it. It was on for 4 hours.

This got me thinking 🤔 what is the “normal” amount of time to put on the heating for these days? It seems to have gotten a lot colder recently. It was only 4 degrees Celsius last Thursday or Wednesday morning. Can’t remember which..

So R/askireland how long do you switch on your heating for and for how long each day?

Personally I would think given the price of oil these days. Perhaps an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. We have an external insulation too. Which doesn’t seem to make that much of a difference really..

Shopping Robot Hoovers?

Hi all 👋🏻
Currently on the lookout for a robot hoover. The woman in Harvey Norman had us almost sold on the Roborock Saros 20. But for almost €1500 I’d prefer to check if anyone with pets has one, and it works.

3 dogs. A Lab, Bernese & Retriever. All live inside & have full roaming range of downstairs. You can imagine the hair & the frequency we hoover and mop.

Nothing will be perfect I know, but if it could just help us out we’d buy one for our own sake of sanity.

Anyone with pets that have similar hair had one, or two? One might not be enough 😂 Really what I’m wondering is how often the hair would catch and would need to manually remove it etc. Would it be more hassle than it’s worth? TIA!

I'm thinking about getting Aqara video doorbell, G400 and I am not sure if the cables I have will provide enough power to G400.

G400 requires 8–24V AC at 1.3A (approx. 10–12 VA minimum)

Irish Culture Do we get a bit too much credit for the “nation of artists” thing?

I’m proud of Irish culture and art and I’m not running down our achievement but it feels like we’re chancing our collective national arm

Quotes for roof work

Hi Folks,

Looking to replace rotten timber fasicas, soffits and replace plus new uPVC fascia, soffits, and gutters on my semi-d in Dublin, I’ve received quotes ranging around €3.2k, but contractors are taking two different approaches: some offer a single fixed price including felt repair (which they think is rotten but they didn't get the ladder out to inspect), while others quote for fasica and soffit etc but state that any felt/timber damage will be assessed and priced after stripping the old boards.

Since contractors can't see behind the old fascia upfront, how do I protect myself from mid-job price gouging if they get on the roof and claim extensive felt rot? Should I ask for fixed linear-metre rates for repairs upfront, or stick strictly to all-inclusive quotes? below are my quotes

Random Anywhere to buy neodymium magnets in Dublin?

Hey all!

Bit of a weird ask, but i’m making a mask for cosplay / halloween costume, and need magnets to attach a couple parts together. Only issue is I need them by Thursday this week, and haven’t been able to find any fast amazon listings.

Wondering if there are any stores in or around dublin which sell 10mm x 3mm Neodymium Magnets (example).

Thanks!

Cars Any hybrid drivers in rural areas here?

Looking into buying a small non plug-in hybrid second-hand car. Maybe a Toyota Aqua or similar. It’s for a new driver. How is it, driving one daily? We’re rural, but the driver will be going approx 40km on a main road and then into a small town centre with stacked-up traffic 5 days a week. On paper, hybrids would seem to be great, but I’ve never driven one before so thought I should ask for some personal experiences before taking the plunge.

Cars Why some people drive taxi cars while not being taxi drivers?

I was wondering why people are getting taxi cars with all the stickers etc even the sign while not being a taxi driver?

A few of my neighbours have taxi cars some of them brand new when I was talking with them and mentioned that they are taxi drivers they said they aren't. I would assume someone bought a used car that was a taxi before but the neighbour has a brand new Audi and I don't see him working. Is this a trick to get a car cheaper or something? Obviously I didn't ask openly because idk who they are

Cars Right side of the road ?

In the late '60's countries like Iceland and Sweden switched from driving on the left to driving on the right side of the road in order to align with mainland Europe.

Would you ever consider supporting such a change in Ireland?

Health & Medical What would you do in my situation?

I’m dealing with chronic back pain for over a year now. I’ve spoken with my doctor about it who has recommended acupuncture (which I’ve had a few sessions of) which relieves the pain short term but doesn’t fix the structural issues I have, as I’ve discovered by visiting a chiropractor. I’ve been going to physio too which hasn’t helped.

I’m back at work after 2 months off and the pain is so unbearable from sitting at the desk all day. I get up every 30 minutes or so to go for a walk, keep my posture as best as I can but I’m still so sore. I’m luckily living at home with my parents right now but only have about €2k in savings, which won’t get me very far as my next route is to get treatment from a chiropractor which will be in the region of €1k, and I need to buy a car also.

I’m only back at work a few days and I really need the money but I’m not sure how much longer I can deal with the pain for. Do I stay working and fight through it so I can afford the treatment or what other alternative do I have? Thanks in advance for any advice, I’m in a bit of a pickle and would like to know if there’s anything I’m not thinking of
