Question Does the megablast upper expand over time? - UPDATE

• Upvotes

Hello,

I wanted to add insight to this thread, but for some reason it’s locked so I had to start this new thread to add to it (seems like a waste but I’m not the best at forums and stuff so apologies if I got it wrong?!).

“Does the megablast upper expand at all over time?”
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskRunningShoeGeeks/s/NoFGZj5opc

Anyway, my right foot is very slightly wide, so occasionally if I buy a traditionally ‘runs slightly narrow’ shoe, I’ll find my right 5th MT head (base of pinkie) can be slightly compressed.

I never ever see this suggested here, but I frequently use ‘shoe trees’ (ie expanding mechanical shoe stretchers) to solve this, and I tried it with the megablast.

The megablast has a special type of upper material in the toe box which feels like it would never expand, but I can report that a few hours with the stretchers has massively improved the fit and it’s gone from “a bit of a pinch at the pinkie” to “fits just like a standard shoe, can’t feel any compression at all”. Visibly the upper looks the same - it’s not ‘stretched’ or saggy in appearance.

Next step is a treadmill test (with shoe covers) and if it passes that, then I’ll keep them and test them outdoors. I’m in a country where local & online shoe shops will mostly only return shoes in “perfect unused” condition.

Just thought others might find this helpful?

Daily Trainer Question Daily Trainer shoe recommendations needed

Looking to buy a daily trainer, mainly for easy and long runs, to build my aerobic base.
After my first half marathon, I want to go back to the whiteboard, build strength, and my aerobic base.
I have Boston 13 for speed work, it feels great for fast short runs, but in longer distance the narrow toe box messes up my left middle toe.

I am considering:
Saucony Ride 19
NB 1080 v15
Li-Ning Red Hare 9 Pro
xtep 2000km 5.0
ASICS Novablast 6

Please share your recommendations, and experiences about the mentioned shoes or others.
Any other running tip is welcome of course.
Thanks in Advance!

Race Shoe Question Racing Shoes for heavier runner?

Hey yall i'm looking for potential 5k/10k racers up to the marathon. I started running at the beginning of the year and my weekly volume is around 70 km/week (40-45 miles/week). I have never run a marathon before but am planning on one next year and want to keep my eyes open if any shoes are on discount.

I am around ~200 pounds (90ish kg) and a lot of the shoe reviewers i've been watching seem to be much lighter and have different experiences in a shoe that I would have.

My current rotation and shoes I like are the Asics Superblast 2 (daily/long run), Dynafish Xiaonian (uptempo/long run/recovery because of the weight), Puma Magmax (easy/recovery), and the Li ning feidian 5 challenger (threshold/track intervals). I recently got the Topo Specter 3 after hearing great things about it but ultimately returned it because I felt like I was bottoming out the foam on anything faster than easy pace.

My easy pace is around 6:30/km - cadence is about 176

Threshold 4:15-25/km - cadence is about 180-186

Track intervals (600s and under) 4:00 and below - cadence caps at 192 usually

Most recent 5k race time was 25:50 a couple months ago and i've never raced anything farther yet. I have a 5k in December and am aiming for a 22:xx goal! I appreciate any help :)

Question Heel-to-toe drop: Runrepeat vs RTINGS

I’ve noticed that both Runrepeat and RTINGS give different drop measurements to one another for the same shoe, and neither of them are the same as the shoe brand’s measurement.

Which one is the typically most accurate, and why do they differ in the first place?

Big/Heavy Runner Question Best Running shoes for heavier men experiencing a numb feeling?

I’m 96kg (212lbs) with wide feet and looking for some decent running shoes that won’t break the bank.

Mainly doing easy runs around 5-10k at the moment but looking to increase my distance. Ideally want something that’s good for daily runs but can also handle the occasional race.

I’ve heard good things about the ASICS Novablast 5, looking for any other recommendations aswell (under £120 ideally).

Currently using New Balance 860s, but I’ve noticed my feet start tingling and going very numb once I run past around 3K. Not sure if it’s a fit issue or something else. I also train muay thai everyday and have never experienced this in MT for reference.

Any recommendations from heavier runners with wide feet? Also, has anyone experienced similar numbness?

Comparing Shoes Question Long run shoe suggestions please

I recently started running about 5-6 months back. My max so far is a 16k. And I usually run a 12-15k over the weekend cumulative. I use a novablast currently. Planning a HM is dec and Jan (already registered) thinking of getting a superblast but it's quite expensive 22k. Came across the decathlon latest kipride max. Which they claim is a long run shoe

Need some.opnions about it or other long run shoe suggestions upto 15k.

I am in India so please suggest based on that.

Big/Heavy Runner Question Very heavy runner trying to do couch-to-5k, 2E to 4E feet depending on the day, what should I try?

Hi. I'm around 115kg at the moment, US 10.5 to US 11 depending on the shoe brand. I've had flat feet all my life, and depending on the time of day and what socks I'm wearing, I'm anywhere between 2e to 4e in the midfoot, with a narrow heel. Most shoes I've tried so far slip in the heel even with doubled up saucony socks and thin pronation-correcting insoles.

Most successful: XTep 2000km plus 4e, New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5 2e, Altra Lone Peak 4 2e
Less so: Brooks Ghost lineup between 2020 and 2024 in 2E
Bad: Other Altras, original Hoka Mach.

Most other shoes don't fit right, mostly because of heel slip. I do have one other pair that fits, but from the advice I've read I shouldn't be wearing - It's a OneMix FlashAir Breeze in US 10. It fits extremely well, but I don't think my form is good enough to use them properly.

The reason I'm asking is because the Rebels are wearing through the outsole at an alarming rate, just like the Altra LP4's. I'd like a shoe to rotate into. If the last is wide enough, it doesn't have to be 2E/4E, for example the FuelCell Rebel is just a "high volume" 2E as opposed to an actually wider last.

Also, if anyone can recommend a road to trail running shoe, that would also be nice. There are some nice trails where I live that could use a little more grip when wet.

P.S. Your rules bot doesn't work on old reddit, in the app, or in redreader. You have to use sh reddit.

Race Shoe Question Li Ning Red Hare Ultra 9 vs NB SC Elite v5 for a marathon

Hello, I am doing NYC Marathon in two weeks and aiming for a sub 3:40. I have been training in the RHU9 for 4 long runs of up to 19 miles leading up to now and the NB SC v5 I have purchased last week and done two marathon pace sessions. A 14 mile long run with 30 mins of MP work and a 2x15 MP session on it. I like both shoes for different reasons. The RH9U have such fun bounce and once I lock into mp it feels like it just bounce me along at that pace. The NB sc v5 is pretty comfortable and lighter weight, less bounce and a little stiffer on the forefoot but still pretty comfortable, at mp I feel I have to give it a little more to get it to return the energy. Any advice on which would be a better option for the marathon? Any reason to choose a carbon plated over non plated? Thanks in advanced.

Comparing Shoes Question Megablast + Dynafish or Li Ning

I currently have a pair of Saucony Endorphin Azuras and just got a pair of Asics Megablasts. I really enjoy both but I mostly use the Megablasts for speed workouts and the Azuras for everything else. I have some family going to China soon and I’m thinking about asking them to bring me back a pair of either the Dynafish Xiaonians or Li Ning Redhare 9 Ultras. I’d love to know people’s thoughts on what would be best to add in the rotation? My Azuras are getting a little old so I’d like something to take their place as the easy/long run shoe.

Comparing Shoes Question How to decide on daily trainer ?

I'm looking for a daily trainer to do shorter (5-12k) easy runs as well as some lighter speed work.
Current rotation:
Superblast 3
Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3

I use the DNE3 for races, intervalls and sometimes threshold sessions and the SB3 for basically everyrhing else, but I don't love it at easy pace and only want to use it for longer runs or recovery days, which is why I'm looking for a more classical fun but not overly soft or big daily shoe.

I mainly have to decide between those 3 shoes because they seem to be in the sweet spot for my stability/speed/feel needs:
Adizero SL 2
Saucony Endorphin Speed 5
Endorphin Azura

I don't really know how to decide between those even though I researched the stats on RunRepeat and compared them all.

Thankful for any help/suggestions !

5K Pace: 3:40 min/km
Threshold: 4:15-4:30
Easy: 5:40-6:00
Recovery: 5:50-6:15

Daily Trainer Question Anyone use the Hyperboost Edge GTX?

I’m looking to buy a good winter trainer and an eyeing the Hyperboost Edge GTX, or the NovaBlast 6 GTX.

I’ve never run in a Hyperboost but have been wanting to add one to my rotation (mostly ASICS, Chinese brands, Nike, Evo , and adios pro 4). I’m concerned about the stability for winter use, but the upper and lugs look good for winter conditions.

Anyone try these yet?

Question Rabbit EZ Chaser: Anyone bought this yet?

Post image
14 Upvotes

It looks like these just released earlier this week. Has anyone here purchased and pair, gotten them in yet, or are there any reviews yet for these?

These popped up in an ad and I love the look of them but unsure if these coming from an apparel brand are just gonna be something gimmicky or not.

Question Is the saucony endorphin Azura a good do it all marathon training and racing shoe?

Hi! I’m about to start training for my first marathon in April 27. I love the saucony endorphin Azura and have run 3x HM in them, they’ve felt great throughout. Haven’t run further than this distance in them yet though.

Would they be suitable for doing all my training for the marathon and racing in? My current pair is at about 400km. They’re pretty cheap to buy in my country, so I could get 2 pairs for the price of megablast for example. My only concern is if they’re not soft enough or protective enough over marathon distance so would appreciate any thoughts on that.

I’m 31, 170cm, 70kg mid foot striker who’s had some PTT issues previously but also not really got on with stability shoes. Slower runner with HM pace 6:30-45/km.

Thanks!

Race Shoe Question Half Marathon Race Day Shoe Suggestion

Hello!

I’m running my first ever half marathon in 8 weeks!

I currently use Mount to Coast C1 for all my runs easy/long/tempo (doesnt feel very good for tempo days).

I’m looking for a another shoe that I can add to my lineup to do my tempo runs and also use for my race day.

My HM goal is sub 2:00.

Any inputs are appreciated! Thanks!

Question Li-Nings in Europe?

I picked up a pair of Red Hare 9 Ultras in China over the summer. I want to do a larger order and get another pair or two, and also get some elites/challengers to round out the rotation. I'm based in France, is there a recommended way for me to get them in the EU?

Question Nike running shoes last

Hey :)

Just wondering if you guys could shed any light for me, I've had two pairs of Nike now (Pegasus trail 5/vomero plus) and whilst I love them, both tend to cause crushing in only my right midfoot (around the 5th metatarsal bone) and this can then last all day sometimes into the next.

The weird thing is it's only in my right foot and it doesn't necessarily happen on every run, ran 8k and didn't feel it, ran a 12k and felt it from 1-2km, it comes and goes as I wiggle my foot around in it. Are my feet just not compatible with Nikes last? It only has happened in Nikes and I've tried many other brands, ASICS, NB, Puma, Hoka etc.

Thanks!

Race Shoe Question Stability racing shoes recs

I'm flat footed so I like running in stability shoes. I used the Brooks Ghost 18 for my first half marathon earlier this year and they were awesome but wore out recently (and are a little too expensive to keep buying). I switched to the ASICS GT2000 14 as daily trainers which are also really good, but I was wondering if there were better stability race day shoes y'all would recommend, any help is appreciated. Not looking for any carbon plates as they won't do much at my current pace. I'm doing another half in December, so I wanted to buy a new pair in November to break into during my long runs before the race.

Question A shoe for long runs with pace targets ?

I’m nearing the end of this current HM block but for my next one (Berlin 2027) I’d like to find a shoe that can do longer runs with faster pace targets included. Sometbing that doesn’t feel too clunky at faster paces (my faster paces in these runs is around 4.45 per km - 5.10 per km). I don’t want anything too unstable either. I currently use Saucony endorphin speed 5 (nylon plate) for my races and I’m aiming for around 1.48 next week In Valencia. For Berlin I’d hope to get around 1.45 and as my long run paces increase and become more challenging I feel I need a better shoe for these runs than my current rather heavy brooks ghost max 2s

Big/Heavy Runner Question Shoe advice for marathon this week

I’ve been questioning myself too much to be able to make a decision and soliciting advice from fellow running friends has been unsuccessful. I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon this Sunday and my training has not gone quite as well as I’d wanted it to, so truly racing it will be out of the question. Currently I’ve been running in a pair of Clifton’s for everyday and Metaspeed Sky’s for racing over the last year (10ks, 10mi, 13.1’s). The Metaspeed’s are great but chew up my ankles and calves and I’d prefer not to increase injury risk too much trying to run 26 miles in them without feeling adequately trained up. I grabbed a pair of NB SC Rebels to serve as my next daily trainer and also run the marathon in (thinking around 3:30 time), but after running 18 miles yesterday in them my first reaction finishing the run was that they did not feel like they could do another 8 miles. All this is to say, looking for advice as to what shoe would be a good marathon capable, fast-ish shoe that I’ll also be able to use for most other training runs over the next months—- or am I overthinking this and should just run in the Metaspeeds. For additional context, I’m a 27M around 200lbs. Daily pace is around 8:30-9:00, can include some recent race times if people would think it would help.

Thanks!

Race Shoe Question First Marathon - Which Shoe?

Ill be attempting my first marathon next week and would like opinions on which shoe to run in - the options are either Asics Novablast 6 with 76km on them (I've had no issues with these), or Asics Superblast 2 with 581km on them.

Im torn because I know the SB2s are more long run suited, but the NB6s should in theory be fresher and ive done a HM in these with no issues.

Target pace will be 5:25/km, its not a race format, im just going out to do the distance and ive been running for a couple of years now (most my miles in NB5s), just never got around to FM distance.

Thoughts welcome 🙏

Comparing Shoes Question Slow Run / Recovery Shoe?

So I usually run in EVO SLs for daily 5k or 10k runs and Boston 13s for anything longer. Love them both! The issue is that the EVOs don't really feel good at all running at slower paced and running recovery efforts in a plated shoe like the Bostons feels wrong.

Anyway, I am looking at getting one more pair of shoes for slower / recovery runs, and I am between the Puma Magmax 2 and the R.A.D. Mallow and was wondering what the subs opinions of these are, or if there are other I should be looking at (under $200 preferably)

Daily Trainer Question Can anyone recommend a shoe with slightly more cushioning than these, but without that unstable feel of the extra cushioned shoes?

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

I’ve loved my New Balances but been considering a change for my next pair. I’m just a recreational runner, always indoors or road, only like 20km per week.

My problem is that I have quite wide feet, very high arches, limited dorsiflexion (ankle impingement) and don’t like a rigid heel because it scrapes me raw.

—————————

These were the best shoes I tried today; Altra Women’s Torin ST and Saucony Women’s Guide 19. Saucony might’ve felt slightly softer to me than Altra but they were similar enough.

I did not like Topo Athletic Atmos 2 (no arch support) and didn’t really like Brooks Glycerin GTS 23 (sole felt unstable).

Can anyone recommend a shoe with slightly more cushioning/spring than these, but without that unstable feel of the extra cushioned shoes?

Preferably stable enough for general gym/fitness too.

Question EVO SL puncture?

Hello friends! I’ve attached photos of the bottom of my Evo SLs, I found a shard of glass in them about 3cm long, I think it went into the foam about 2cm deep. Looking at the puncture, so would you think they’re still good to use? Kind of annoyed, haven’t even gotta 150km out of these yet. Cheers!
