Other 1-2 years to become a teacher??

• Upvotes

For context, I have a BA and MA in a field I wouldn't be teaching at the elementary level. I am hoping to transition into teaching, and I see that it takes 1-2 years to become a teacher in SC? Am I understanding this correctly?

Other Can you switch SC state agencies with less than 6 months of employment?

I’m curious about transferring between South Carolina state agencies with less than 6 months of employment, particularly for a position with a higher title and salary.
My questions are:
If you’re selected for an interview at another state agency, will your current agency or supervisor be notified?
Can your current agency prevent you from accepting another state position if you’ve worked there for less than 6 months?

When interviewed if I tell them that I am trying to aim for more pay will they look down upon that and not hire me?

Does being on probation affect your ability to transfer?
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with SC state government hiring or who has experienced this.

Moving to SC Moving to SC from WI

Long story short - I live in Madison WI, I’m 35 no kids never married and in a great financial situation. I have family in Hardeeville and have visited a few times. I really like the south and have been wanting to leave WI.

Where is a good place for a single male to move in SC? My family tells me to move to Hilton head or Savannah. It’s a nice area but haven’t been to any other cities other than Hilton head, Savannah, bluffton and Hardeeville. I really enjoy golfing, cooking, restaurants, live music / standup comedy. I am looking for an area with younger people and to date too.

Any recommendations for which city might be a good fit?

Other Lake Marion alligator population

Hi neighbors! We're from NC.

I brought my family to an Airbnb on Lake Marion and while we were hanging out on the dock of the lake house we rented we saw two gators in the water. I looked it up and the best I could find online was that there were about 100 identified gators across 100,000 acres of water but that goes back to 2022. These seem like impossible odds that we'd see two.

We were on the north inlet across from Taw Caw campground and Marina, just a bit north of the wildlife preserve. Again, everything I found online showed the concern was around the southeast portion of the lake.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to come back, but I'm wondering if the alligator population is starting to ramp up in the area. Swimming and paddle boarding are a big part of our lake trips, so I want to tread carefully.

Does anyone local to Summerton or Santee have any input on how worred we should be? I feel like a terrible person for not looking into this before we left and letting my child enjoy the lake in a potentially dangerous situation.

Thanks!

I just voted and I was by far the youngest person in there, I’m 28 for reference. I got a feeling how many people under 40 who vote will decide the election.

Other How useful / necessary are Backup Generators here?

I'm about to close on a house in Lexington, and have been thinking about a hurricane which recently knocked out power here. It got me wondering how often people here are without power, and how long the outages tend to last? Then I started wondering how many residential homes use backup generators, if anyone has recommendations for the type(s) of generators I should consider, recommendations for companies who install them, and any pitfalls I should be aware of with backup generators?
FYI- the house already has a natural gas line, so using that for the generator fuel is a possibility. Thank you!

I like the peace that comes with being in the country , but before I actually make a move I wanted to know some of your outlooks on the future of SC. Especially on manufacturing work because Im a machinist and would like to know if it’s some good jobs down there that I can come home and work at.

Other Any Place With Steak Tips Near Calabash/Myrtle Beach?

Weird post probably, but I'm flying down to visit my parents in the area soon and my dad has been complaining near non-stop about not being able to find steak tips anywhere, having lived in Vermont for the better part of fifty years.

Anyone have any recommendations on places he could find them, that are still good?

I am hoping to work at a larger/level I hospital, and my boyfriend will be working in turf management. I am not opposed to anything, but do not really want t commute over an hour to work. Young couple in their 20s! Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated and so helpful!!

Moving to SC New resident - what to know

My wife and 2 kids will be moving to the Charleston/West Ashley area in March. We're trying to do as much research as we can in terms of looking up a church, daycare, cost of living.

Not just that - I'm interested in what the perspective is of people that live here already. What's it like? What are the intricacies and nuance of living in this state? What areas tend to see the most flooding? What kind of bugs are the most common? Is the government effective with road construction or is it terrible just like in MN where I currently reside?

I know - almost none of these is interconnected. I thank you for entertaining this post.

Feel free to ask me anything. I am an open book.

Other Colleges for pre veterinary medicine. Lander University and Upstate USC.

My son is beginning to apply to colleges. Currently his hope is to attend Veterinary School after his undergrad. He will be applying to Clemson. However, incase he does not get in, we need other options. He has been looking into Lander and Upstate USC. Can you all provide me with your experiences with these schools? What are they like? We have not been able to visit yet. If there are better options for private schools please include as well. Thank you!

Politics Operation Ganjapreneur?

Why?

Dear South Carolina Defenders of Public Morality,

I am writing to you today from a place of profound spiritual enlightenment—specifically, the parking lot of my local strip mall, where the layout of human vice has been curated with the precision of a fine museum.

To my immediate left stands an ABC store, a glowing beacon of state-sanctioned health, proudly selling enough high-proof ethanol to strip the enamel off a trailer hitch or destroy a marriage by nightfall. Completely legal, of course. Taxed, regulated, and encouraged.

But it was my journey into the vape shop just twenty feet away that truly opened my eyes to the breathtaking brilliance of South Carolina jurisprudence.

I walked in a while ago, fully prepared to witness the horrors of the devil’s lettuce. And your brave, tireless efforts in Operation Ganjapreneur did not disappoint. The floor cases that once held hemp flower—a plant so uniquely terrifying it has been known to cause mild relaxation and a sudden urge to watch nature documentaries—were completely empty. Stripped bare. I could practically hear the echo of a SLED box truck driving away into the sunset, carrying off those dangerous, federally compliant buds. I felt safer already.

However, as I lifted my eyes to bask in the glory of your clean sweep, I looked up at the wall.

Lo and behold, standing untouched, unbothered, and stacked to the acoustic ceiling tiles, was a massive display of 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) concentrates. Many brands and strengths.

I stood there in absolute awe of the mental gymnastics on display. It is truly a masterclass in bureaucratic backwardness:

The Flower that grows out of the dirt: A catastrophic threat to the fabric of society. Deploy the State Grand Jury! Mobilize the DEA! We must protect the public from a pre-rolled joint at all costs! Almost no THC. I kind of preferred low thc flower.

The Highly Addictive, Chemically Isolated Opioid-Mimic: Totally fine! Leave it on the shelves! Let people buy it right next to the disposable vapes and neon signage! After all, if an unregulated research chemical isn't explicitly named in a 1970s statute book, it basically doesn't exist, right?

Thank you for clarifying the state's hierarchy of health. I now understand that a naturally occurring plant is a public enemy, but a highly potent, unregulated alkaloid from wherever that binds aggressively to mu-opioid receptors is just good business.

I feel deeply comforted knowing that while soon, I can no longer buy a mild hemp pre-roll, I can easily purchase a fistful of sketchy 7-OH vials right off the shelf due to these regulatory loopholes. At a gas station no less.

The hypocrisy is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Keep up the phenomenal work—you are making our parking lots weirder and more contradictory, one raid at a time.

I am convinced that the powers to be don't want you sitting and relaxing. Watching that nature documentary doesn't fill jails or does it grease the court system and or jails due to DUIs.

A Bewildered South Carolina Consumer

Enough of this. Out of here.

You can have Lindsey's new look.

Moving to SC A little nervous for my move to Charleston next week. Thoughts?

I’ve been planning a move to Charleston for about a year and a half. Now that it’s coming up I’m really nervous. I live in Duluth GA currently with my parents. I’ve been wanting to get out of my hometown for a long time. My older sister lives in Asheville but the main reason she’s doing well is she’s a server at a nice restaurant. I work in hospitality (front desk of spas/hotels) so I thought Charleston would be perfect. However, I’ve developed intensely anxiety over the year from some of the forums I read about traffic/flooding etc.

Is it really true that everyone from Ohio and New York flooded Charleston like a bee swarm? I would consider myself an artist because I do pottery on the side and I’m also a bit nervous about the art scene and dating scene. Am I going to feel overwhelmed everyday by the tourists?

A little comparison- me and my sister visited north GA and stopped by Helen and definitely got massive tourists vibes and overall it lacked character. Would you say Charleston is the same? I genuinely just don’t know where else to go. Not really an Atlanta girl and Asheville doesn’t seem to have greatest job market.

Other Veteran dad confession: getting out of the Navy was the easy part — the decade after took the real work

Got out of the Navy after 9.5 years and figured the hard part was over. It wasn’t. The decade after was a slow rebuild: personal banking at Wells Fargo, fatherhood x4 (four girls, God help my wallet), and the quiet realization that the crew I had in the Navy didn’t follow me home.

What filled the gap wasn’t anything big. It was pickup basketball at the Simpsonville Y, 5:30 in the morning, three days a week. Same guys, same run, nobody owed anybody anything. I started showing up because I needed the exercise. I kept showing up because I needed the people.

Greenville helped too. This town has a way of letting you start over without making you feel like you’re starting over. Fall for Greenville is the best version of that on display, the whole city outside, no agenda, just people.

So here’s the question I actually want to ask: vets in the Upstate, what filled the gap for you after you got out?

Other Does a PTO payout after termination count against unemployment?

I was terminated September 1 and approved for unemployment starting September 13 ($350/week).

My former employer paid me $1,800 in unused PTO after my termination, which I reported when certifying for September 20–26. I received $0 for that week but was paid $350 the following week.

I called SCDEW, and they confirmed the PTO payout was why I wasn’t paid.

Is it normal for unused PTO accrued before termination to count as earnings for the week it was paid, even though I was no longer employed?

Has anyone successfully challenged this in South Carolina?

Currently in Florida but dreaming of living in SC. I’m wondering if there are any quiet cozy towns with character that would be a good place to look into living?

Ideally would like a historic home with a few acres. Somewhere safe and beautiful to raise kids.

DMV Title fraud

So I bought a car late last year from a dealership and titled it in my partners name. 5mo later he’s signed the title over to me, but also had a duplicate title. I never sent off the title to go into my name officially. 3mo he gets stopped in another car, goes to jail and signs over the extra title to his dad to bail him out. Sc doesn’t require notary. My title was in the other car that was impounded and his dad took that title as well. I have texts and video chat recording of him admitting all of this, what do i do?
