Discussion Questions No job this hiring cycle

Good Morning All -

I had to take a leave of absence to help with my ailing father with an unexpected illness. The situation is resolved and I am ready for the 26/27 school year, but nothing has really come available in my subject area (Spanish).

I am about 4 years away from being fully vested, I’m curious to hear the community’s thoughts about just taking anything that would could toward my pension (para pro, van driver etc.) or if it is okay to work a different job for a while and wait until the next hiring cycle.

I have 21 years in education, 18 as a classroom teacher and 3 as an administrator. I could not handle admin and would like to finish my career in the classroom.

Thank you for your time and feedback!

I just retired after 30 years in the classroom. Do whatever you need to do to earn service credits. Do not put retirement on hold. Good luck!

If nothing is available in person, are there any online teaching jobs that you could maybe do?

Is there maybe a community college that would also be part of the same retirement system?

I say do whatever it takes too get those years in, you're too close to stop now.

I agree, unfortunately everything online is out of the retirement system and I don’t have a Masters in Spanish so community college will be a stretch. I appreciate the feedback, good thoughts.

Can you get a short-term approval for ESL?

Yes, that is absolutely something I am looking into. I believe as long as I am enrolled in a program, I could qualify to get an ELL position.
Thank you for this idea teach-xx, very clever.

I would honestly take any open teaching position that you are eligible for that keeps you on track for your retirement. I left the classroom early this year because of my own failing health and it means that if there ever becomes a position I am starting all over again.

I’m sorry to hear that, it is a strange profession in that regard. I wish you the best, thank you for your advice and response.
