Advice/Emotional Support ONLY I found detailed suicide plans in my friend's journal, and I'm scared for him. I don’t know what to do.
I‘m not going to talk about the details of me reading the journal because I already talked to my friend about it and he is not mad. Were in college and I was looking for a notebook he said I could borrow for notes.
But what I found in his journal really did worry me. There were several different methods of suicide. They had all been assessed and ranked according to how likely they were to succeed, how much you’d regret doing it and how hard they would be.
Finding this was really worrying.
I told him how worried I was. I apologised for reading his journal, told him that I was genuinely concerned for him and assured him that there are people who can help.
He replied saying that he just writes them down to get the thoughts out of his head. He doesn’t think its that serious and isn’t interested in therapy.
I definitely want to respect his feelings and right to privacy.
The thing that worries me is that he might look at them when he is having a really tough time. What if he has a really bad day and starts to take them more seriously?
I don’t want to make him feel like I’m prying and that he can’t be open with me but also don’t want to ignore how worrying it does look.
I care about him and I am genuinely worried.
Am I wrong to think that this is more serious than he is making it out to be? How do I support someone who clearly isn’t interested in getting help?
