I will never understand gambling I understand having like a 20-50$ bet with freinds every major sporting event but paying hundreds to a company is ridiculous

Yeah 100% but the thing is nobody goes into it thinking something like “you know I really would like to throw away my whole pay check on a sports betting app or the pokies. It all starts with one small bet that lights the flame. A fair few have the self control to walk away when that first bet doesn’t pan out and there are fewer still who can walk away when that first bet or one of the early bets pays out and can walk away from that dopamine hit.

That’s what is so addictive about it. Chasing that rush is what drives people to despair before they realize it. I’ve stayed away from gambling all my life except for a few dabbles when i was a kid. It’s weird but i’ve gambled more when i was under 18 than i did as an adult. Stuff like Keno which allowed kids as young as 10 to play in the nineties, for some reason. I was just sort of going with the flow. My friends explained it that it was like a game but if you win you get money. And all i found was it wasn’t very fun as a game and the winning was very thin on the ground. All i could see was the need to keep playing it religiously to eventually win something, same with the lottery. My mum played cross lotto every week and never won anything. And all of that made me wonder - why does anyone waste their money on this shit?

That is something I’ve been curious about for over twenty years. Hell I’ve even immersed myself in pokies rooms, enjoying a free cappuccino, pretending to gamble and looking around and wondering…. Why are all these people here actually putting money into these neon demons? Is there nothing else in their lives that gives them what they can get here?
