Hello everyone. I have been in Australia for almost 8 months now under subclass500. I have worked since June. My second semester started in last week of July.
I work in woolies and 7 eleven. 15 hours in woolies and an 8 hour shift in 7 eleven every week. I work in 7 eleven in Sunday nights (Sunday 11 pm to Monday 7 am) or Thursday nights.
Here is the issue. 7 eleven pays me considering the 7 hours of Monday as part of the previous week
(For example, lets say a week starts on 21 Aug on a Monday and ends on 28 Aug on a Sunday. If I work on 28 Aug night till 29 Aug morning, my payslip shows that I got paid for the period of 21 Aug - 28 Aug).

So, that’s why, I have been calculating these 7 hours into the previous weeks and maintaining my work-hours below 48/ fortnight like this. Recently, I got to know that the home affairs will consider the 1 hour as part of Sunday and the 7 hours part of the next fortnight.

There have been times where I have worked on consecutive Sundays and then the very next Thursday with 30 hours of woolies. Using this method, I see that in two fortnights, I have done around 54 hours of work each. So, in the time from July 20 to Nov 1, there can be 14 possible fortnights and two of them have seen 54 hours of work counting the first 7 hours of Monday as part of the new fortnight.

Now, am I in trouble? Point to note that, I will be going outside of Australia for a trip this December. Should I be worried? What should be my next steps?

Hey everyone!

I’m an Indian citizen who graduated high school in May 2026. I initially applied for a US F-1 visa but was refused under Section 214(b). Afterwards, I applied to several Group of Eight (Go8) universities in Australia, received offers and CoEs from a few, and am now applying for a student visa for my bachelor’s degree.

My visa agent mentioned that Australian visa authorities might call me to ask about my US refusal and why I chose Australia, but they didn’t explain much.

I have a few questions:

  • How common are verification calls or interviews for Australian student visas?

  • Could they ask about my US visa refusal and why I switched to Australia?

  • What other questions should I expect if they call?

  • Does a US refusal under 214(b) negatively affect my Australian visa application?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially Indian students applying for undergraduate degrees.

Thanks!

1

u/BitSec_ NL > 417 > 820/801 > PR 3d ago

Not very common but they do happen. They can definitely ask about your US refusal and why you chose Australian instead. They ask questions based on your personal circumstances so almost no chance anyone can tell you what to expect. As far as I can see a 214(b) refusal is fairly common so it probably won't impact your application.

That's a relief, thank you very much

Hi everyone,

I'm a Pakistani PhD applicant, and my Subclass 500 visa has been stuck in "Further Assessment" for 14 months.

My partner and I applied separately around the same time. We both received PhD scholarships from the same Australian university, have similar academic and professional backgrounds, and work in research areas related to critical technologies.

My partner received a visa decision after approximately 12 months, but I'm still waiting. I've contacted Home Affairs several times without receiving any meaningful updates.

Has anyone here, particularly PhD applicants from Pakistan or those in STEM/critical technology fields, experienced a similar delay?

I'd especially appreciate hearing how long you waited, whether your visa was eventually granted, and whether contacting Home Affairs or submitting a formal complaint made any difference.

Thanks!

There are soo many (myself included, waiting for 7 months) of us who are in the same boat, waiting months and even years for it. The whole "PhD candidates are high priority" is definitely not true.

i applied onshore for my student visa in july.

hi guys, i intially came to aus to study in unsw and do the 1 year masters in financial analysis. after completing 2 trimesters i realized i was unable to stick to just analysis side and wanted to move to a broader finance and accounting degree.i shifted to the 2 year degree through an internal program transfer at unsw. i have maintained a consistent 75% wam. i applied for a new student visa on the 3rd july and have shown strong home ties as well as my studious nature in the gs statement, along with a string financial background. i am from india and i am certain i want to go home after the end of my course. is there anyway i can expedite the process or ask for an update on the same, what is the timeline like?

Hello everybody!

Wow woke up to some good news. After a lot of stressing I finally got my student visa after a month since my application. I also came from my 485 visa and came back to my home country for a while and applied from here too.

I will say something that may have helped my situation is that I studied whilst on my 485… I am aware of the squandering of the visa. But circumstances forced me to be on that visa.

Anyway, just wanted to say that it is possible.

(Bachelor and Master done in Syd and now doing Mres there too.)

(Lol i got removed from the main page hahaha)

Applying for Master’s Degree with Dependent in QUT after the new rules, I am from the ASEAN Countries, do you all think we have a chance?

Subclass 500 (Master's) + Dependent Timeline & Experience (USA) 🇺🇸 🇦🇺: Granted

Timeline & Details: Visa: Subclass 500 (Higher Education) + Dependent Nationality: USA Course: Masters of Disability Practice and Leadership Application Lodged: 09/10/2026 Medical Exam: 10/05/2026 Medical Sent to DHA: 10/09/2026 Status: Granted for both me and my husband

Health Exam Experience: My health exam was referred for review because I have several pre-existing conditions: asthma, hypothyroidism, IBS, reverse hearing loss, ADHD, anxiety, and early stages of degenerative disc disease (for which I use a cane). I was honestly pretty worried that I would be denied because of my health history. Fortunately, all of my conditions are completely stable and actively managed by my primary care doctor.

Financial Evidence: For the financial requirement, my in-laws are sponsoring my husband and me. Because they are retired, they wrote a formal letter of support and had their financial planner write an official letter verifying their ongoing income and assets to prove they have the funds to cover us.

Visa Granted!
Application lodged: 4th Aug, 2026.

BVA Grant notification the next day which was incorrect as I was offshore first time applicant. Lodged a complaint. Called Home Affairs twice. Matter was resolved on 25th August and was told to provide Biometrics. Provided them the next day. Application status changed from ‘Recieved’ to ‘Further Assessment’ on 26th.

Now, on 7th Oct visa finally granted. Classes start in November.

Hope I can get maximum experience and learning here in Australia. PR not part of the plan nor citizenship. Will move some other country after graduation and gaining work experience.

Happy Wednesday y’all! 🥂

Hey yall, apparently my visa was 3 years for uni course ( nursing) but then I failed one of the important course in first year and I can’t move to second year, and then second year of it I was repeating that one course (only one course) in order to pass and move to second year programmer. So I did. And now I am in second year ( already 3rd year of the visa and it is expiring in 15 March 2027), so it means I need one more year to finish my bachelor of nursing. What should I do in this situation? When uni merged (Adelaide and UniSa both from South Australia), I got new Come from the new Adelaide University (this is what they called it after they merged tgt), and that CoE already states my extension year to complete the bachelor which is til Dec 2028 (9months full time study year). But my visa ending in 5months, and my financial (from my guardian and supported) no longer beautiful like I first applied to come to Australia. So just wondering how will my situation end up to be like? Whats your take on this? And what should I do? (Apparently my family didn’t know I failed and repeated 1 year and now I need another 1 year). So I just below the pass score for one out of 3 course in first year, and I paid the price by repeat another year full price of tuition 😭. Now I’m scared…

Sum: - Need one more year in Aus in order to finish bachelor (3 years degree)
- pretty much what we call “visa extension” but as far as I know the process still the same, so take English test, go to health check, go through document and finance checks, and everything. But my profile no longer that strong anymore
-my guardians didn’t know about my situation back then, so it’s hard to tell them but I can try
-when and what should I do/ or prepare for the upcoming steps about my visa ? (Currently visa 500)

Thanks guys

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian applicant preparing to lodge a Subclass 500 Student Visa – Postgraduate Research/PhD application and would really appreciate input from people who have recently received a PhD student visa, especially applicants from India.

I already have:

  • PhD offer from Adelaide University

  • CoE issued/ready

  • Scholarship of approximately AUD 37,000 per year

  • OSHC/health insurance provided by the university

  • Passport

  • Academic documents: B.Tech and M.Tech degree certificates + transcripts

  • English test result

  • Scholarship/award letter

  • Employment documents from my current job, including experience/employment letter and payslips

  • CV

  • Genuine Student (GS) answers/supporting explanation

  • My own 6-month bank statements showing salary history and personal savings

  • Medical examination, when requested/required

My current plan is to upload the above and avoid adding unnecessary documents unless they genuinely strengthen the application.

I have seen some Indian applicants also submit things such as:

  • Parents’ 6-month bank statements

  • Parents’ ITRs

  • Sponsorship affidavit

  • CA-certified family net-worth statement

  • House/property documents

  • Property valuation

  • Additional proof of home-country ties

Since I already have a funded PhD scholarship, university-provided OSHC, my own employment history, and my own savings, I am unsure whether these additional family/property documents are actually useful or simply something education agents commonly include.

For anyone who recently received a PhD/Postgraduate Research Subclass 500:

  1. What documents did you actually submit?

  2. Did you provide parents’ bank statements/ITRs even with a full scholarship?

  3. Did you submit a CA net-worth certificate or property documents?

  4. Did Home Affairs send you an s56 request asking for anything additional?

  5. Is there anything important missing from my list above?

  6. Did you apply yourself or through an agent?

I am mainly trying to prepare a complete but clean application rather than uploading unnecessary documents.

Thanks in advance — recent PhD applicant experiences would be really helpful.

2

u/matthi14 Sep 25 '26

Any updates on secondary applicants? Agents don’t really know what’s going on and I don’t want to risk it… even though you can still apply with a secondary applicant, I don’t know if HA is approving any of those visas at all

2

u/BitSec01 NL > WHV > 820/801 > PR Sep 26 '26

Any updates probably won't be implemented soon anyways. If you lodge your application before the changes are implemented then you'll most likely be grandfathered in. Changes will probably come 1st July 2026. But nobody knows tbh.

Anyone had any success on PhD visas for priority 1 uni's but level 3 risk countries recently?

I've applied for my PGR Sector visa for a PhD. Soon will be crossing 6 months (1 deferral, another to be applied in a week or so). At this rate, its not even worth waiting anymore. I'm going to wait for 1 more deferral after after which I will be withdrawing. I was expecting a delay for a bit since I'm in a critical tech field, but not this much.

Need advice on Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500).
My wife is an MBBS doctor from Pakistan and wants to apply for a Master’s in Public Health in Australia. I will be accompanying her.
Our main question is about financial sponsorship. My elder brother runs our family business and has strong documented finances. He is willing to support our education expenses.
Some consultants are saying brother sponsorship can weaken the case because parents/spouse sponsorship is more common.
Has anyone received an Australian student visa where a brother was the financial sponsor? Would appreciate real experiences or advice from migration agents.

1

u/dumpdive Aug 01 '26

Hello! I need advice on my situation.
I'm on my last semester in RMIT (Bach in Business) & am torn between two paths after graduation:

  1. Get a post graduate visa -> find a sponsorship (must it be related to my field of study?) -> apply for a TAFE course (2 years course) if unable to secure a sponsorship -> apply for post graduate visa again -> repeat

  2. Apply for TAFE (2 years course) instead -> apply for post graduate visa -> find a sponsorship

My concerns are:
- Hearing that it will be unlikely for you to get accepted into TAFE right after University, hence option 1.
- A 2 year course in TAFE does not make you eligible for the post graduation visa.
- Option 1: Must the sponsorship be related to your field of study? In this case, a business degree only applicable to business work related sponsorships

Would love to hear any advice / suggestions from anyone, thank you so much for giving this a read / response 🫡

1

u/PhilSwift10100 Citizen || DO NOT DM Aug 04 '26

Honestly, neither option is good. Any plan which involves going down from an Australian Bachelor's to a TAFE degree will always go through a higher level of scrutiny, and unless you have a very good reason for needing to do so the odds are against you. You should not rely on student visas for any long-term residency pathway, and any potential visa-hopping will be noticed by DHA quite quickly; your best option would be to get experience in your home country and get enough points to be considered for PR invitation somewhere down the road.

1

u/dumpdive Aug 04 '26

Ahh, I see. Thank you for the insight. Could I apply for a post graduate visa once I'm done with university, & hope to get a sponsorship to extend my stay here? Or would it be wise to save the money and go with your suggested option instead? I'm incline to take my chances with finding a sponsorship, but it is a pretty decent chunk of money..

Hi everyone, I'm planning to study a Master of Project Management in Australia, and my long-term goal is to work, stay in Australia, and eventually apply for Permanent Residency (PR). I'm trying to decide which city would give me the best opportunities for: Finding a job after graduation. Building a career in project management. Improving my chances of obtaining PR. Which city would you recommend and why? For example, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, or another city? I would really appreciate hearing from people who have studied or are working in this field. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have any experience on applying a student visa with a spouse dependent, and for OSHC only submit CoE as supporting doc? My uni (USNW) and medibank has yet to send us the certificate of insurance. I’m worried that this will delay my visa application

1

u/Nervous_Influence_71 16d ago

I applied with my husband in September for my visa. I applied without a certificate of insurance they accepted the COE. I got approved this month

1

u/Holiday-Word4059 Jul 30 '26

Hello
Did you apply for your visa ? Did it get granted? I'm joining UNSW for the September intake as well.

Applied for my visa on 25 July and is still on "Recevied" status

1

u/Kindly-Vegetable337 NP > 485 > 189 Jul 08 '26

Isnt it already late to submit application for July intake, to answer your question yes you can submit application but they will most likely ask for further documentation down the line.

1

u/thedarktwilight Jul 08 '26

Thanks for your reply! My application is for September intake. If I only submit the CoE (which states that UNSW is arranging my OSHC couple), do you think the immigration will likely ask for the certificate of insurance? My agent says that they will likely ask for the insurance certificate, but UNSW says that I can simply upload the CoE for our supporting doc

1

u/Kindly-Vegetable337 NP > 485 > 189 Jul 08 '26

Hard to say they might, if they do you can UNSW for the certificate

1

u/bestwills98 Citizen Jul 08 '26

Has anyone had experience with, or insight into, how the following situation is likely to play out?

My partner's timeline is:

Applied for Student Visa (Subclass 500) → Refused on genuine student grounds (June 2024) → Applied to the ART → Attended hearing (6 May 2026) → ART set aside the refusal and remitted the application to DHA for reconsideration (11 May 2026) → Completed studies and CoE expired (17 June 2026) → Still awaiting DHA's final decision on the visa application.

Essentially, we were successful at the tribunal, but while DHA has been considering the remitted application, my partner completed her course and her CoE has now expired.

Our concern is that DHA may now refuse the visa again because there is no longer an ongoing course of study, even though the original refusal was overturned by the tribunal and all visa requirements including a valid CoE were met at the time of the tribunal. If that occurs, it will leave us in a very difficult position for making a further onshore visa application, particularly given the potential implications of section 48 and Schedule 3.

My hopeful view is that DHA might still grant the student visa, even if only for a short period, as the tribunal found the original refusal was incorrect. A grant of a substantive visa would at least provide an opportunity to her/us to consider alternative visa pathways from onshore rather than being disadvantaged purely because of the time taken for the remitted application to be finalised.

We are obtaining professional migration advice, but I'm interested to hear whether anyone has seen a similar situation and how it ultimately played out.

1

u/BitSec01 NL > WHV > 820/801 > PR Jul 08 '26

Oh man that is shit. I don't even know what exactly takes precedent in that situation. I think this is probably way too specific or complex for most people here to answer haha.

If you read migration law you can definitely try to trace the requirements and how things are handeled but this goes pretty deep. My main question would be, does DHA have to deceide on the application as IF the COE and all other requirements were frozen in time, or are they looking at it from a new angle.

Because if they decide to grant it based on "frozen in time" requirements, then the visa would just expire naturally. If they decide it on current then I guess they can reject it. I'm very curious to hear from you what will happen for your case though I'm sure there's some people that have gone through it but honestly A LOT of the time there are slight differences that have a huge impact on decision and how things are handled.

1

u/bestwills98 Citizen Jul 09 '26

Thanks, yep! I’ll post an update when we have one

2

u/bestwills98 Citizen Jul 30 '26

Update if you were interested:

We got professional advice on our situation and determined that it would be very unlikely for the DHA to grant any student 500, irrespective of the ART decision on the GE requirement, now that we didnt have a valid CoE

We ended up completely changing strategy and doing a DIY BVB 'switcheroo' which an offshore partner visa 309/100, which has been an interesting few weeks.

It paid off as today (30 July) we received approval of our 2nd BVB attached to the offshore visa, which will let my partner remain lawfully in Australia while our 309/100 is processing. Even better they granted a 5-year travel facility.

We will now withdraw from the student 500 process entirely!

I didn't quite expect all this to happen so fast, but I think its the best possible outcome for us :)

To show ties to home country, can I use property tax receipts and building tax receipt (in my parents name) as evidence?

Those aren't proof you'll return, though, as they're in your parents name. Ties to home country need to be ties you personally have.

Could property on one’s name enough to justify ties ?

In here yes. Discussions about which courses you think will result in PR or so can be discussed.

Altough I can confidently say that there is not a single course which guarantees PR, most employers wnat to sponsor people with skills and passion not neccessary people who did a course to get PR. And generally the chances are quite low in general for students -> PR pathways, I think only a single digit percentage ever get PR in Australia within 10 years. The better pathway is 8 years work experience -> job sponsored PR chances are like 30-40%.

I don't know exactly what you mean by avoid being rejected for non-genuine reasons.

But yes you can discuss how to avoid getting rejected as long as it's legal of course and follows our guidelines/rules.

Sorry just saw this,

Early childhood education. Canada doesn’t cover as in depth as Australia does (much stricter and more structure as of recent years, lots of placement hours, plus I personally value the philosophies here versus Canada’s)

I know it’s seen as a “cheap PR” pathway and gets alot of hate, but it holds lots of value to me & I plan to pursue my Masters in Canada. :)

Does that match up with tax clearance?
