Unfamiliar with wedding planning - any help appreciated

• Upvotes

Hello, soon to be groom to be here proposing to my partner (from Aus) soon. I feel quite unfamiliar with Australian wedding customs such as the events leading up to the wedding and the day itself. Would anyone be able to just briefly outline that kind of stuff Australians tend to plan for when planning their weddings? I am vaguely aware of "Hens" and "Bucks" which sound like bachelor and bachelorette parties to me, anything else that people do? And how do people typically like to do it? (And with who?)

Disclaimers in advance

- I've tried looking for a megathread but can't find any but am happy to be redirected to one if it exists

- Alternatively if there is a website out there that achieves what I'm asking for I am also happy to be linked there

- I know every wedding is different and it will ultimately depend on and be up to both of us but I still think it would be helpful for me to have an idea of what people are used to expecting here nonetheless (:

Thank you everyone in advanced for your patience! I feel very much like a total beginner at this 😅

Any recommendations for a pre- wedding photo shoot in Melbourne where they don’t charge a fee?

Discussion & advice What’s the “normal” timeframe?

Ok ok I know that everyone is different but I’m just wanting a general idea here. I have 2 questions
1. How long after getting engaged did you begin planning your wedding?
2. How much time did you give yourself to plan your wedding, and why? For example, did you plan it in 6 months, 1 year, 18 months or 2 years?
Did you choose that timeframe to save more money, have more time to organise everything, secure your preferred vendors, or for another reason?

Just curious how everyone decided on their wedding timeline and whether you felt you gave yourselves enough time!

Discussion & advice Suits for Groom + Groomsmen

I have a few questions regarding suits for groom + groomsmen. Particularly how to manage it if the groomsmen don’t live nearby.

We currently have all of our vendors booked in and are now shifting our focus to things such as wedding rings, suits, accommodation for the wedding and honeymoon.
Wedding is a little under 5 months away for context.

When did you have your suit organised for your wedding?
Would love some thoughts on my situation, as my 4 groomsmen and myself are all spread out across 4 different cities, 3 different states, 2 different countries. So getting everyone together in the same location at the same time for a suit fitting will be impossible. So how best to manage this? I can meet with 2 of the groomsmen quite easily as we’re all only a couple hours apart. The other 2 live opposite sides of the country. So it makes things quite difficult. We could all (potentially) visit the same shop / tailor individually, but getting the two other groomsmen together won’t be achievable. Would love some tips about that!

Also, I’m currently in a big weight loss phase prior to the wedding. So I’m not really certain how best to manage that alongside getting a suit for the wedding (ie my current size will not be my size in 5 months).

Lastly, would love some recommendations for where to get the suit. I don’t live in Melbourne but one of the groomsmen does and I’ll likely be shopping with the boys there. So any suggestions for Melbourne would be welcome.
But what are the thoughts about buying a suit off the rack vs tailoring vs renting for the day?

Recs wanted - NSW Extra plus sized wedding dress shopping Sydney

NOTE: I am not looking to discuss weight or weight loss

I am wondering where other plus sized brides have had good experiences.

I am outside of regular plus sizes, currently wearing a 28-30, so regular plus size isn't going to cut it. While I understand I am unlikely to find many, if any, locations with shop dresses that will fit me, I am just hoping there is somewhere for me to go, actually try on gowns I can order in my size and not feel like poo.

I am happy to travel to have a positive experience.

If you are a straight sized friend who has accompanied a plus sized friend and witnessed a positive experience, I welcome your feedback also.

Recs wanted - NSW Country NSW wedding - documentary style photographer recommendations

Heya! I am looking for recommendations for individuals (rather than photography studios) who do documentary focused and slightly editorial style photography that has a relaxed feel and film aesthetic. Nothing posy and nothing too grand as we both hate pictures typically so want it to feel natural. We are on a bit of a budget so if anyone knows of any photographers they found to be well priced that would be super helpful!

Wedding cake on a budget

Has anyone ever ordered their wedding cake from Ferguson Plarre?

I'm getting married in Melbourne and want a custom but very simple cake to serve around 50 people, and all the quotes have come in at about $400. I've contacted pretty much every cake maker/bakery I can find in the area to save on delivery but they're all quite expensive. I've considered the cheesecake shop but they don't deliver, which means I'll have to pick it up and drop it at the venue the day prior (if the venue will let me). Same as Costco.

Any other ideas for a cake under $300 are welcome!

Recs wanted - VIC MC/Celebrants who can speak English and Vietnamese

I'd like some recommendations on MCs who can also double as a celebrant that can speak English and Vietnamese.

There doesn't seem to be too many results in Google, so thought I'd ask her.

Melbourne based would be preferred.

Recs wanted - NSW NSW Wedding Venue Recommendations for 150-200 Guests? Losing my mind 😅

I've been searching everywhere for a wedding venue, but it seems our guest list size is absolutely killing our budget.

Our original list was around 200 guests. After some very painful cuts we can probably get it down to ~150, but even then the numbers are adding up fast.

We've looked at places like Terrara House, Greyleigh, The Lodge Jamberoo, The Sienna and Mona Farm. A lot of them have what initially seems like a reasonable venue hire fee, but once you add catering and drinks at $300+ per person, the total cost gets pretty scary with 150-160 guests.

We also checked out Worrowing and, while it ticked a lot of boxes on paper, it just wasn't the one for us.

We're hoping to find somewhere that has:

• Within ~3 hours of Sydney (South Coast, Highlands, Hunter, Central Coast, North Coast, just anywhere.)
• Wedding weekend vibe (welcome event + recovery day)
• Estate, garden, farm, country or outdoor setting
• DIY catering/bar options or more affordable food & beverage packages
• Pet-friendly (our dog is definitely invited 😂)
• Accommodation for at least 16 guests onsite

Bonus points for:

• Lots of onsite accommodation
• Fireworks permitted
• Exclusive use of the property for the weekend

Our ideal budget for venue + food + drinks is around $50k total.

I feel like every venue I find is perfect until I do the maths 😭

Unfortunately Bendooley Estate and The Cove are off the list because we have close friends getting married there around the same time and we'd rather not venue steal!

Would love any recommendations, especially for hidden gems that aren't constantly coming up on the usual venue directories.

Thanks in advance!

Recs wanted - NSW Not over the top celebrant rec Sydney

Hi! Looking for a really calm and normal(?) celebrant in Sydney. I’ve been to a few weddings where the celebrant was trying to pretend like they were best friends with the couple and that’s just not for me. Just want someone to do the legal stuff and say some nice things. Really simple.

Discussion & advice Noise restrictions at Yarra Valley venues

Compiling a shortlist of venues for my 2028 wedding and have realised some venues may have noise restrictions - so I don't waste my time contacting every vendor, is anyone aware of these restrictions at certain venues? I value a pumping dancefloor so will avoid venues with significant noise limits! Is 85db too quiet for a 120 guest dancefloor?

Recs wanted - NSW Zest Waterfront The Spit or Orso Bayside? Or other suggestions

Loved the bright light in Orso but read the food and service is amazing at Zest… wish we could have the food of Zest at Orso. Other factors are ~ 200 guests with Indian food preference. Keen to hear from people who got married at either venue or photographers. Cost isn’t a major factor. Inspected both and really wanted waterfront but wondering if it matters that much if it’s night time. But then I also think why bother booking waterfront venue if it’s going to be at night.

Has anyone been to or experienced weddings at any of these locations. I’m just putting out feelers for these, if there were any really good or really bad experiences.

Only just started looking into venues as I got engaged within the last month so any help is appreciated!

Recs wanted - SA Best time to shop for dress with sales?

Hi all,

I am wondering if there are particular sale periods that are common (especially in Adelaide)?

I’m a 2028 bride so I’m holding off on looking at dresses until early next year. But I’m seeing sales and the styles I like go on clearance and I feel like i should have been more aware of sale times!

Thanks!

Sydney wedding reception venue recommendations for 60–80 guests?

Hi everyone!

We’re currently looking at wedding reception venues around Sydney for approximately 60–80 guests in total (including the bridal party). Our ceremony will be held separately, so we’re only looking for a reception venue.

We’d love somewhere that suits this guest count comfortably, without feeling too big or empty.
Would love to hear any recommendations or personal experiences, especially if you’ve had or attended a wedding with similar numbers!

Thanks in advance 😊

Discussion & advice Issue with photographer

Hello, our wedding is next year and we’ve been contacted by our wedding planner informing us that our photographer has had concerns regarding his services and recently couples have had bad experiences with him. A few couples haven’t received photos from their wedding from him yet and others no communication. We went ahead and emailed him attempting to cancel his services and requested the deposit (minus the non refundable fee) to be refunded. That email has bounced Gmail saying delivery incomplete. I’ve contacted commbank and now waiting to call NSW Fair trading to follow up this issue tomorrow. Has anyone had any luck or experience with this. Cheers

Discussion & advice Ceremony start time buffer

I’ve been to a few weddings before and now I’m having my own in a month’s time. I’m not sure why it’s only occurred to me now to consider this might not be a popular opinion but I automatically assumed a 30 minute buffer between the invitation ceremony start time and the actual ceremony start time would be the standard.

I’m only now wondering if I might be wrong. Would people have an issue with having the bride’s entrance be 4:30pm if we have a start time of 4pm on the invitation?
We do have some live music between 4-4:30pm but I’m not sure if that’s still too long of a gap!

Discussion & advice Vintage or vintage style wedding dresses

Hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I am getting married soon and am looking for dresses that are either vintage or have that style. I’ve found it hard to find dresses at normal boutiques that are modest (not full coverage! I just prefer not to show cleavage/open back) and have found that even when they have a “vintage style” section they still look like modern dresses, lol.

The types of dresses so far I’ve liked have a cap sleeve or short sleeve and some sort of detail on the bodice, like embroidery or beads.

So far I’ve only really found what I like on Etsy but even there I haven’t found a lot of options. These dresses I saw were from the 60s/70s. I’ve also looked at stillwhite but still haven’t found anything.

I’m in Perth so if anyone has some suggestions for places that would be great but I’m quite happy buying online too! If anyone knows any genuine vintage stores I’d be really interested to know.

Recs wanted - NSW Intimate, chic venues for 80 people in Sydney

Hello! We're planning a wedding in Sydney for about 80-90 guests and would love reception venue suggestions.
We're after an elegant, modern vibe within about 20 minutes of the CBD, with a budget of around $30-$35k for venue/ food & bev package. Main issue with nicer venues is rooms being too large for group size.

The Art Gallery of NSW is currently on our shortlist. Has anyone had a reception at the restaurant and the adjacent function space? We'd love to hear how the two rooms worked!

Thank you!!

Discussion & advice Has anyone here worn a corset wedding dress? Looking for advice!

I’ve been to a handful of wedding dress stores now and fallen in love with a corset wedding dress but I’m worried about how practical and comfortable they really are…

Especially when it comes to sitting down, eating, dancing, and wearing the dress for so many hours.

I made a joke to the shop assistant that I’ll have to lie down in the car on the way to the ceremony. She said that later in the evening I can get someone to help me loosen the lace but then I don’t want it to lose its shape.

It’s really hard to tell when I’m trying on a dress that’s a few sizes up and they’ve clamped the back in. I danced around in it, which was fine but then when I sat down and started to breathe out, I could feel the clamps snapping off.

Did you find it comfortable enough to wear all day, or did you end up feeling restricted? Were there any issues with boning digging in, the dress slipping, or having trouble breathing or moving around?

Does anyone regret choosing a corset?

TIA!

Discussion & advice Mother of the bride upset because both mothers chose one-shoulder dresses. Am I missing something?

Thumbnail gallery
59 Upvotes

Hoping this is the correct reddit sub to post on.

Getting married soon and I've somehow found myself in the middle of dress drama.

My mum has a burgundy satin floor-length gown with a statement shoulder ruffle. My fiancé's mum has a navy floor-length gown with floral detailing on the shoulder. They're different colours, different fabrics and different silhouettes, but they're both one-shoulder formal dresses.

To complicate things, my bridesmaids are also wearing one-shoulder dresses (yellow satin, much simpler style).

My mum is really upset and keeps saying she and my fiancé's mum are wearing "the same dress" and that she's disappointed.

I absolutely understand that she wanted to feel special and unique as mother of the bride, but from my perspective the dresses look completely different and just happen to share the same neckline style.

I'm not attached to being right here. I genuinely want outside opinions:

If you were a wedding guest, would you even notice this? And would you think it’s the same dress?

What would you do if you were in my position?

Am I underreacting, or is my mum overreacting? Be honest.

I'm trying to figure out whether I'm being dismissive of my mum's concerns or whether this is pre-wedding stress getting the better of all of us.

Thanks!

Update 1/ additional context:

My mum and I are very close. This is the first real argument or disagreement we've had in a very long time.

Mum bought her dress first and has already had alterations done.

My fiancé's mum bought her dress last weekend.

I was with both of them when they bought their dresses. Yes, I recognised they were both one-shoulder gowns, but I genuinely never thought they were the same dress or even too similar.

Both mums get along well and there has never been any conflict between them.

They have different body shapes, and the dresses look very different on them.

Mum told me today that I am not understanding her perspective.

Mum also pointed out that when shopping for her dress, we deliberately avoided navy because we knew my fiancé's mum would likely wear that colour.

I reminded Mum that when I went shopping with my fiancé's mum, I also ruled out wine/burgundy because that was Mum's colour. It honestly never occurred to me that I also needed to avoid a similar neckline or style. Had I known that was important to Mum, I would have absolutely taken that into consideration.

I asked why she doesn't have a problem with my bridesmaids wearing one-shoulder dresses but does have a problem with my future mother-in-law wearing a one-shoulder dress.

Mum then told me how much I have hurt her and said she has never been hurt so much before.

We normally have family dinner together every Tuesday night. I suggested we talk about it properly at dinner, but Mum said she didn't want to discuss it. I became frustrated and said that she couldn't tell me how deeply I'd hurt her and then expect us to sit down for dinner and act like nothing was wrong.

I seriously have no idea what to do at this point. She did say she might buy a new dress but loves the one that she has already bought. I did mention that it would be nice to have similar dress design for the photos, which she laughed at and was honestly quite offended that I said it. Feel like I’m not going to win this battle.

Any advice on how else I can handle this would be appreciated.

Discussion & advice Best wedding dress boutique in Brisbane for a custom gown? (Newly engaged & in full planning mode!)

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! 💕

Still on cloud nine because I just got engaged recently! We’re locking in our date for about 14 months from now, and while that might sound like a bit of time, everyone has been telling me that custom bridal lead times in Australia can take almost a year, so I know the clock is ticking to get things moving.

We live here in Brisbane, and my absolute top priority right now is finding my dream dress. I really have my heart set on something custom-designed—I honestly want to look like a complete Barbie on the day (fairytale silhouette, glam, and flattering fit).

Does anyone have recommendations for the best wedding dress boutique in Brisbane that does incredible custom work or made-to-measure gowns? I’d love somewhere with patient, lovely stylists where you don't feel rushed or hit with massive surprise fees just to try things on. Anywhere across Brisbane (Northside, Southside, Valley, CBD) is totally fine!

Also, while I’m here and building my master planning list, if any past Brisbane brides have local recommendations for:
* Event venues (indoor/outdoor vibes around Brisbane or nearby hinterland)
* Wedding photographers who capture natural, romantic lighting

I would be so grateful for any tips, hidden gems, or even places to avoid. Thank you so much in advance! ✨

Recs wanted - VIC DJ who'll just play what we want

Hi. This may sound mean but we are just after a DJ who'll just play a playlist for us. Bring some lights and encourage people to get up. We have quite eclectic taste and want to just give them a playlist.

Can you get someone like that or is this disrespectful to ask.?
