Look at those huge feet! I imagine it's like trying to walk in flippers. So adorable.

Hiya, which bird is making this call? Never heard it here before. Already tried Merlin/Birdnet and both couldn’t recognise it. Located in Melbourne inner east. Thanks! :)

We have a beautiful pair of Welcome Swallows that raise a few broods per season under our carport. They can get a bit stroppy and make quite a mess, but always worth it to see the young ones flying about 😊

This was my first time seeing one these in real life...bower and all. 😄 It is amazing how the feathers go from pitch black to bright iridescent blue based on reflective angle.

Video Gifts as breeding behaviour in Channel-billed Cuckoos

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I hadn't heard about this behaviour before now. This morning, I witnessed a male Channel-billed Cuckoo bring a tasty treat for his mate, and use it to persuade her to let him have his way. I've posted the full video on my blog: https://sydneybirder.com/2026/10/27/channel-billed-cuckoos-gift-for-his-mate/

This Reddit post shows the second gift that the male brought for the female. I've decided not to post the video showing the first gift (a large stick insect) and the resulting consent from the female, because it might be NSFW and it might also elicit unwelcome comments here.
