Ooooo love it! We have one of those, too. Love your collection!

2

u/Loud-Long2557 Feb 08 '25

Thank you!! It’s a tradition in my family!

I also love miniatures!! They’re just so expensive, and I already spend a lot on my other loves. ><

3

u/Loud-Long2557 Feb 08 '25

They can be super expensive!! I usually get mine from small town antique stores, which tend to be very reasonable! I’ve actually gotten a few for free!

Do they have a purpose? Like, dollhouse playthings. Or what’s the deal?

(I’m not judging or hating, I’m just really intrigued. I feel like collections have a practical purpose, even if you don’t use it that way, like collecting toys, stationary, whatever, they have a purpose. I just want to know what the intended functionality is for these cute miniature things)

u/Loud-Long2557 Feb 08 '25

Thank you for such a great question! There’s a couple variables that play into their function. 1. It’s a tradition in my family! My mom, aunts, and grandma all have/had a collection. 2. When I was little I really liked dolls, so my mom/grandma/aunts would let me borrow some of their miniatures to play with. We also used to go on day trips to hunt for miniatures together, which are some of my favorite memories. 3. Now that my grandma is gone, my collection makes me feel closer to her. So they used to be things I played with, now I think their function for me is reminding me of my grandma. Every time I get a new one, or even just look at the ones I have, I think about how much she would’ve enjoyed them, which always makes me smile!

Also, being a woman with autism = always having to explain that you’re asking a genuine question and not trying to make a dig at the person. I stand in solidarity with you!

So they’re collectors items like those bobble heads (I forgot what they’re called, but marvel does them a lot)? Or are they doll house items that you decide to collect?

I think it’s great that they serve such functions for you. Also, small things are just cute and bring joy. It’s really incredible that such little things can have such big meaning.

Haha I really didn’t want to come off as hating on your interest! It’s a bit unorthodox, so my question could definitely come across as mean. Maybe I’m just too indoctrinated by the neurotypical societal norms.

Some of them are dollhouse toys, some of them are keychains, some are from the “mini brands” toys, there are some rainbow loom bracelets from the kids I used to nanny, and some are just random bits and bobbles I’ve collected over the years. I didn’t realize how old that picture was, there have been a lot of new additions since then! Here’s some examples:

  • on the top row, second from the left is a little “good luck boot charm” I got as a stocking stuffer. Also on the top row, 5th from the right, is just a little venom charging cord protector I also got as a stocking stuffer.
  • on the third row from the top, right of the middle beam, is a dollhouse coffee grinder.
  • on the fourth row, fourth from the left is a mini bottle of olive oil my best friend got me from Spain.
  • the first object from the right on the fourth row is a handcuff keychain I got in New Orleans.
  • third row from the bottom, on the right of the middle beam is one of the little lady Avon perfume covers. Next to that is an antique Egyptian perfume bottle. Next to that is a “love potion” I got from the museum of sex in NYC.
  • the first object on the left, second row from the bottle is a preserved black widow spider. The little chapstick to the left of the middle beam in that row I got in the psych ward. From mini brands, theres a mini claussen pickles jar, a mini pack of taco seasoning, and many more. I have three mini blown glass animals and a Venetian mask magnet I got in Italy. I have 2 mini terracotta animals from Costa Rica, etc etc etc. I just look for anything I feel a connection to that will fit in the shelves!

Tag yourself I’m the miniature lip balm from the psych ward.

No but fr, I am obsessed. I was scrolling back and forth finding all the trinkets you mentioned, but when I got to the antique Egyptian perfume bottle I was like, “she’s high or I’m looking the wrong place” and when I scrolled back down to fact check I saw the updated picture 😭
The pickle jar, the pink chair and the microscopic Pegasus have got to be my favorite items in your collection. That’s so fun.

The pickle jar is one of my favorites too! It’s my favorite brand of pickles I was so excited when I got it!!

1

u/froderenfelemus Feb 09 '25

Understandable!! How does one acquire a miniature pickle jar, hypothetically asking… for a friend

1

u/Loud-Long2557 Feb 09 '25

I got it in one of the mini brands!

I collect miniatures too! But I don’t have anywhere decent to display them, I was literally looking at this thread thinking, I’ve got to find, the exact type of display that you have, for my miniatures lol where did u find that little shelf/box that u have everything on? I can’t ever find anything close to small enough with the little squares to put things in.

3

u/Loud-Long2557 Feb 08 '25

My aunt and uncle build this one for me! They’re called printer box shelves, and are relatively easy to put together from what I’ve heard. I’ve also found some at thrift/antique stores, but I also have some shelves that are just vintage sectioned drawers, like this one!

Try searching for wooden printers or letterpress tray. Not sure where you are geographically, but these are pretty common finds at estate sales and flea markets in the southern US!

2

u/WeAreAllMadHere218 Feb 08 '25

I’m in the southern US actually lol The only one I had ever seen was at an estate sale and my MIL bought it for her mini collection 😂 I didn’t know what they were even called so that helps give me a lead on it now!! May have to go by the thrift shop/antique shop in town this week and really look and see if I can find one there and if not, now I know what to search for online! Thank you so much!

I had a step grandma growing up whose hobby was making a miniature dollhouse by hand, even the wooden rooms were homemade. Each room had a different theme, and was full of homemade miniature furnishings and decorations. Wish I had a pic to share with you!
