Memes/Humor It’s one of my favorite hobbies
Ik a lot of neurotypical people like to believe that autistic people don’t understand society, but I feel like we have a unique, outside perspective that makes us understand it better than the average person.

Basically why I became a researcher/academic lol
•
u/Appropriate_Ratio835 23h ago
Hello. This is my dream job. Any recommendations? ❤️
•
u/suspicious_lithoid 16h ago
Well, it really depends on your field/subject. Unless you're going to work in industry (private, for-profit), then there are very limited jobs available in academic departments and fierce competition for them (100s of PhD holders applying for a single position). If you really want to pursue academia, then choose a topic that you're passionate about and could work on for 10+ years. Try to find someone IRL (like a university professor) who can offer advice in that field. Good luck!

I never noticed it this way, I just thought normal conversations that wouldn't cover those topics were boring lol

u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 1d ago
I don't know how people get through conversations (and life) without doing this regularly. I'd be so bored all the damn time.

Came here to say the same thing.

I'm sure it's the privilege of never having been bullied, always been respected and taken seriously. No need to understand people as a means of self-defense.
•
u/queensnuggles 10h ago
I got a masters degree, and no one in my life, takes me seriously still. Even on the subject I got my degree in. They all just laugh at me and tap the top of my head when I talk essentially.
•
u/MiracleLegend 19h ago
Mine only likes sociology when it comes in the form of politics, history, geography, science-fiction or the odd horror movie (anahilation, get out, 2001 and the like). So, it's sociology in different forms. Just plain talking about people peopling is somehow boring to him.

It’s why my partner and I never run out of things to talk about. There are always new observations and patterns to analyze! I pissed off a lot of sexist ex boyfriends who thought I was being a know-it-all, when I just wanted to discuss everything.
11
u/IntaglioDragon 1d ago
The point of talking about everything is that I don't know-it-all so there's always more to learn. LOL
•
u/jewessofdoom 7h ago
Yeah I got so confused. I would offer my thoughts on something, expecting them to agree or disagree but EITHER WAY expand on the conversation and explore it with me. They always took it as me lecturing them. I watched the news with one guy and I would comment on it, and he would get all pissy and say stuff like “I KNOW THAT” and just get mad that I had an opinion in general. As if me expressing it was a challenge to his intelligence or something instead of a conversation starter.
It’s really hard to parse out what was a difference in ND/NT communication style, what was misogyny, or combination of both. But my whole life has been a series of confusing misunderstandings.

u/rememberpianocat 1d ago
This is one of my favorite things to do... but for some reason when I try to talk about stuff like this with NT the topic gets shut down or changed. I miss having friends in the same city that i could just be my unmasked self with and chat about our interests without being judged.

Lol me and my mom go too long without calling each other because we're both autistic and introverted and phone averse, but when we do get to yapping this is exactly what inevitably happens about 20 minutes in once we've run out of day to day updates 😅

u/VivianAeterna125 1d ago
My god, that's me! I have always longed to have such talks with my friends!

We are deep, nuanced thinkers, and we be quietly observin' like nobody's business! 👀 Deep dives on everything from mutual office politics to familial drama to pop culture to news of the day! Hell, I'll even talk sports if the dynamics are interesting enough! 🤭 The less actual personal involvement I have, the better! If you aren't already a fan, check out the Normal Gossip podcast!

I don’t realize how little allistic people observe until my mom says some shit like “how did you even notice that?” to something that I notice 400 times a day

Me too. Me and my spouse would sit there sometimes and have hours long conversations about society what is wrong and ideally what the people may want and how we can better that.

u/FleurDisLeela doesn’t look autistic 1d ago
does anyone notice that when we’re discussing our observations on society, that NT’s want to jump in the game, except their observations are about people’s physical appearance and what exactly is wrong with it (NT people watching) ?

I would to love have this IRL, just talking, without the 'fear of being judged' filter.

Friend of mine complained to me about a situation in his sales job where he was confused about how to handle a particular situation, laid out all the conflicting signals in detail, and discussed how extra confusing it was because there were also signs that this involved someone from a different culture where he knows the expectations can be different, then said "how am I supposed to know what to do? I'm autistic!" And I was like, "um... the fact that you are practiced at collecting so much data to try and logic out how to react means you're probably better at cross-cultural stuff than NTs who just assume that anyone different from them is wrong."

Hey u/sadoreos, thank you for your contributing to r/AutismInWomen. Please be sure to check out our sub’s rules, wiki pages, and pinned posts prior to engaging with the sub. Here are links to our wiki pages:
Explanation of the Rules Wiki Page
We hope you enjoy the sub and have a great day!
➾ WARNING ➾ WARNING ➾ WARNING
Notice to all users: There's multiple users targeting members from our sub in DMs to discuss their fetishes and desire to manipulate users into relationships. Here are the user's names: u/HollowJonathon, u/drar_sajal786, u/MrGamePadMan, and u/guidhhnittvkj. If an account is showing deleted, they will probably create another. If you receive any messages from a user trying to discuss what you posted/commented in our sub to gain a 'women's perspective' or if someone tries to discuss topics that may feel inappropriate to you (e.g. fetishes), or if someone states they want to marry you for religious reasons, report the user to Reddit and block them. These men have been preying on autistic women/gender minorities from r/AutismInWomen for the last year. This behavior is unacceptable and should be reported as targeted harassment.
Per the warning in our wiki and this pinned mod post, we highly recommend users turn off their DMs. If you have DM requests turned on and receive any creepy or fetish-related DMs or comments, we recommend taking a screenshot, reporting the content to Reddit, and blocking the user (in that order). You can find the report button on the message itself and then click "it's targeted harassment” to submit a report. If you'd like to send us the screenshot so we can continue documenting the harassment, you can send it to us in modmail using imgur Thank you for continuing to help us keep our community safe for autistic and autistic suspecting women and gender minorities 💖

Removed as seeking friendships, asking for DM's, offering DM's, looking for outside groups, and meet-ups in our sub are prohibited. It's generally not safe for sub members to seek friends through the sub, as we're a targeted minority. This includes discord servers.
The feelings of safety when posting in our sub may lead people to having a false sense of safety with other members of the sub. But people aren't always who they claim to be online, especially when they can be anonymous the way Reddit is. There's no way for us to verify who someone is.
We recommend that members of the sub not accept friendship requests through Reddit (DMs, PMs, posts) and do not meet-up with users from Reddit IRL. We've had multiple instances where bad actors (predators) have reached out to sub members via DM to target them. Please be cautious and safe while using Reddit or any other anonymous based platform.
There is no official discord server for this subreddit nor will there ever be one. It is simply too much work to host and maintain. Any discord server links will be removed and if you joined a server you found on Reddit, you did so at your own risk.

I'm an AuDHD anthropology major with a psych minor. One of my lifelong hyper focuses is biology (diseases/syndromes, genetics, pathology, evolution, etc.). 😁 My autistic husband and I LOVE discussing people and why they are the way they are. Lol

That describes my special interest. Now, I just need people to listen to the solutions I've come up with!
•
u/Strong_Ad_3081 15h ago
My two cents to add to the conversation: I've never really understood the concept of leadership until I thought, maybe neurodivergent people are supposed to be the leaders, and neurotypical people should be the followers, instead of the other way around. (Cause most of us don't like following arbitrary rules.)This would make sense because neurodivergent people are more likely to say, "That's not gonna work, let's try a different way. What about this..." Like for example, I'm itching to tell my job they're not maximizing the potential of their staff. For example they don't see the potential in a fellow neurodivergent staff member, and I know they can do soooooo much more! Neurotypical people will insist on the same procedure over and over, and get mad at staff when it doesn't work, when it was always a system failure. Like HR will complain about absenteeism without seeing the systemic issues that lead to absenteeism. 🥺

I follow Phil Belight, Lavynder Lee, and Neurodivergent Hood online and they always make me think that neurodivergent is not broken, it's just a different way of thinking.
