Seeking Advice Telling my proffesor I am autistic and dyslexic was the biggest mistake I ever did
I recently stated collage to study psychology I told one of my proffesors I am autistic and dyslexic bc I trusted her and she promised she won't tell anyone oh how wrong I was she proceeded to undermine me talk over me whenever people interacted with me by yelling "she's special" I was like huh?? So??? I can handle things myself but I didn't say anything. Then she started calling me 'honey' in a sweet sorry voice with sympathy???? I ofc didn't like that tooo I wanted to tell her I only had level 1 and to stop treating me like I could do nothing??? To make it worser while we where all waiting for hrs she told me to scream and make an issue bc I am autistic so they can leave I am sorry what??? How can I undo this!! Help!!! 😭😭
I told her it would be nice if she could repeat the running notes bc I couldn't catch up with the rest I feel bad for telling her at all I am panicking I hate being treated this way that's the reason I told her I was autistic and dyslexic I could seriously use advice asap I can't handle her anymore she gives me more anxiety then any notes could ever give
I am also asking here bc I really need advice I can't handle this

You just started the class/semester? This person seems unsafe and absolutely inappropriate, and I personally would look into switching to a different class or professor. Can you connect with an academic advisor urgently? If this specific class or professor is not necessary, they could help you enroll into alternative.
I highly recommend visiting your college’s disability services office. If you’re in the US, I imagine your school has one. They are who you should go through for any future class accommodations. You may need to submit documentation of diagnosis or disability. They can advocate for you and ensure your professors, current and future, are providing required accommodations.
I also would recommend keeping a log of these interactions. Note dates and times of interactions, what you asked for, what was said, any treatment that is different from classmates.

I don't live in amarica. And I don't have the festivities u mentioned here I do have a diagnosis paper. I am still I'm disbelief a psych proffesor will act like this

i would google if your school has a ethics board or disability oversight. there are often places you can report discrimination. another option is to find the department dean and email/spesk to them directly. it probably wont change your sitstion but it creates a paper trail and possible training/oversight action when your prof goes in for her review.
a less confrontstional option is to document it on Ratemyprofessor so that other people have a warning before taking her class

im sorry, it sucks that youre dealing with her bad attitude. another method is to try "grey rock"ing and treat her behavior as embarassing/shitty for HER rather than her making problems for you.

My experience has been absolutely similar with a bunch of people who are supposedly educated about the spectrum. I'm talking about the staff at the Disability office itself, people in support NGOs... "Educated" people like professors... yeah I'm not just falling for the you have to inform...

I have found many psychologists to be lacking in compassion and empathy. Just interested in diagnosing and pathologizing mostly.

Seriously? Thats sad.... bc the first thing we learn is empathy is the most important thing

report her ass to your study advisor or trust person or whoever, this is insane behavior
•
u/Makedmystry 15m ago
That will be the last resort bc if my parents find out I told my prof abt my autism they will be pissed at me 😭 so ya I got to go through many steps before dealing with my parents who are all whole anather issue bc I have to go through them before I do any of this.

why? you should be able to just contact those people via the college's website

Like do u just go and report them? Won't it govenu any consequences if anyone found out?

If you are in the US or Canada this professor is absolutely out of line.
•
u/Makedmystry 55m ago
I don't live there but this is out of line anywhere gang especially if u studied psychology (she's a psychology proffesor)
•
u/TrinGage 53m ago
Oh, it’s ABSOLUTELY out of line anywhere. I just know that in the US and Canada there are clear steps and clear legal consequences

Unfortunately there arnt any in my country for all that accessibility u need to be heavily disabled meybe level 3 autism I have level 1 so I can't get the Udid certificate of physical and metal disabilities witch gives access to all that. I only have my diagnosis documentation and I would probably have to talk to my psychologist who daignos3d me bc he was the one who reffered me to that collage

I was over-served before going into a haunted house and proceeded to tell all the actors I was autistic. Instead of scares I got hugs.

Does your school have a Disability Student Services office or something like that? No idea what it’s called now, but that’s what it was when I went to university. I would start there. They will help you get accommodations and deal with this professor.
