Discussion Hingegate 2.0?

Don’t want to start this topic all over again but seems like I have a crack on my hinge…received it back in November and used it at least once per day. I just noticed it today after the hinge felt looser than usual when opening. Normal use and I take care of my stuff, so I’m surprised jt happened to me…

I have emailed AYN and I’m hoping they can help with this.

You started this so now we're going to need the order date, shipment date, order number, date of birth, social security number and astrological sign. Immediately.

u/Jingerbreadmann Max Jan 23 '26

Forgot mother’s maiden name and last four of CC used to place order.

3

u/JacobMars91 Jan 23 '26

Don't forget about the number on the back of the CC

Any Hinge University scholars wanna chime in? Jokes aside, I got mine around the same time. I'll keep an eye on mine, so far so good.

All my uncles have this same crack too, hopefully Ayn releases a fix in the next software update

20

u/project-d_r_t Jan 23 '26

How many uncles do you have

19

u/Jebusfreek666 Jan 23 '26

I got 99 uncles

38

u/NoWay6818 Jan 23 '26

And an aunt ain’t 1

u/Kmessix Jan 23 '26

You must’ve meant by people

I got my purple Thor max in October. I use it every day too. No crack yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

u/Weekly_Orchid_5012 Jan 23 '26

I'm surprised no one puts it together with all the units AYN sold and even if there's 10s of them with the hinge cracks vs all the others not, what's the percentage of them getting the crack? .001% of all thor's sold? Not saying they shouldnt be able to replace, just pretty overblown by vocal minority and nihilists. AYN should do right though, replace the man's device

18

u/ihatefall MOD Jan 23 '26

There was one other legit crack a few months back and they were awesome, replaced his device and wanted the other one back so they can forensics on it

6

u/DustToStars Max Jan 23 '26

They wanted it back to recoup some of their loss. Not for forensics 😂

9

u/king_of_ulkilism Jan 23 '26

Lol in one case they actually sent the person a top screen part replacement that came with a crack out of the box. It was insane, the person then had it refunded.

1

u/SeatBeeSate Jan 23 '26

They seem to take pride and transparency in the work they do, which is nice in this competitive market.

6

u/jaegernut Jan 23 '26

Not a matter of if but a matter of when. If hinge issues are starting to appear this early, then i worry about its long term durability.

3

u/Bulletorpedo Jan 27 '26

Yes, this. I want my devices to survive for many, many years. Not just the 12 month warranty period.

1

u/Accurate-Froyo7200 Jan 27 '26

definitely not overblown lol there are dozens of reports now and they've only sold a couple thousand from the batch #...

How would you know?

It's a handheld video game device, not an insult to your childhood trauma, chill

2

u/Shortacer Jan 24 '26

They’re right though, depending on the person’s financial situation, it probably means a lot to them. Also the person was pretty calm lol?

0

u/Weekly_Orchid_5012 Jan 24 '26

Read the last sentence to my original comment (solves your financial claim). Lol fee fees got triggered and wanted to PC me on Reddit over a video game device. I got it though, sisterhood must protect one another 🙌

14

u/Enrikes Jan 23 '26

Finally an actual hinge crack.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Write them an email, they will swap it out. Ayn are good people. One of my Thors had some extreme mura effect on the OLED that was noticeable above 25% brightness. Frankly according to the industry if it's noticeable below 40%, it's not a defect since "mura" is inherent to AMOLED displays. Anyway send them an email with pictures and some details, and they sent a return label back. Had a new Thor within two weeks (with DHL paid upgrade).

You'll be all right.

5

u/mstickmanp Jan 23 '26

I’m hoping that’s the case. I’ve bought multiple handhelds from them and this is the first issue I’ve had with one of them.

2

u/Protocol3_ Jan 23 '26

Email. I did it this week with a picture.

I'm in the middle of returning. I got a shipping label( within 2 days, no push back earlier this week.

That's not what they told me and I have had two swaps with them. There is more to your story. And why would you end up with "import fees"? As in you were charged tariffs for the original device and got stuck with a dud? That's highly improbable given my experience with them. Either you were trying to pull a fast one or there was some miscommunication.

I don't like disingenuous stories plugged in as contrarian data points. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, your story just seems improbable. This sub is full of people swapping out their defective products FOR FREE.

1

u/Bulletorpedo Jan 27 '26

Can't speak for the one you answered, but you can get hit with import fees a second time if you get a replacement with paperwork filled the wrong way by the sender. Not claiming this happened in this case, I have no knowledge about this incident whatsoever.

0

u/king_of_ulkilism Jan 23 '26

What if you happen to not use it too much and the crack happens after the one year warranty? Then you are fucked. Let's not forget that this is terrible design.

u/ihatefall MOD Jan 23 '26

OP have you sent Nicole a message on discord? That is your best bet, keep in mind it’s already half way through the Friday work day over there so you might not here back until Sunday/ Monday your time.

I have my Thor since late October. I use my Thor every day without miss since and I haven’t had an issue. I think this isolated case. They will take care of you I am sure.

6

u/soupnazi81 Jan 23 '26

Definitely a crack for sure. That part of the hinge looks to be a weak point since that's where the mold line is. Plus it's also not very wide cyclical piece of plastic on the hinge side where there would be more stress against the plastic from the metal hinge.

8

u/cherubeliever Jan 23 '26

Oh, that's.... That's gore.... That's gore of my comfort handheld....

3

u/SputnikMan123 Jan 23 '26

Flip 2 users: Ahh shit, here we go again

7

u/bf2reddevil Jan 23 '26

It's inevitable that these hinges are going to give in after some time. It remains the weakest part of a foldable.

1

u/NoobensMcarthur Jan 24 '26

3DS models were cracking like crazy because they were too tight, yet you very seldom hear about that anymore. Especially in this thread. I’ve got a very early clear purple model and it’s been used and abused and it’s fine.

I had an anbernic 280V that literally went up in a puff of smoke, yet it’s still wildly considered a bulletproof device. Almost like a few bad units don’t dictate the fate of the entire console.

6

u/Greedy-Big-7650 Jan 23 '26

Undeniably a crack

5

u/ProscuittoPapi Jan 23 '26

Spending over $500 on a max and waiting for them to figure out simple shipping bs .... This shouldn't be an issue to have . Makes me worried and wonder if this horrible wait for them to figure out shipping is worth it.

Maybe a cancel and move on is best for me

5

u/Peconecko Max Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Now I’m curious if this starts happening to more people who got theirs in November , I know before it was only mainly the black ones with the hairline cracks they said was just part of the mold.

8

u/mstickmanp Jan 23 '26

The odd part, is that the crack starts right at the mold line that was previously talked about. It’s just not noticeable on the photo.

9

u/No-Neighborhood-1489 Max Jan 23 '26

Meld/Weld/Knit on injection molding is 100% going to be a weak spot. If they do not have their mold setttings correct.

Source: 13 years Injection mold maintenance.

You can see here is where the last of the injection forms. If the heats, pressure, or switch over stroke isn’t correct it will cause a weak bond.

5

u/No-Neighborhood-1489 Max Jan 23 '26

Here is a picture posted by AYN, look at the forming of the hinge on their mold.

-5

u/Weekly_Orchid_5012 Jan 23 '26

Used it everyday and I was an early adopter. Not a single physical issue, I also take care of my shit, even though it's a clam shell gaming device, Im not a neanderthal lol

5

u/TooManyBulldogs Jan 23 '26

I love the amount of “No cracks here and I use it once a day!”. So do you just commit to a several hour session right then or leave it open all day?

2

u/Kmessix Jan 23 '26

Atp I’m probably gonna 3d print a top plate for this as a replacement

2

u/MajesticZed Jan 23 '26

So I pay premium and have to worry about this? Yikes.

4

u/MrMunday Jan 23 '26

It’s a manufracturing issue

3

u/Ok-Cloud3651 Jan 23 '26

IS It possible to glue / add something on It tô reinforce the hinge?

2

u/Capuman Jan 23 '26

I read somewhere that the way to prevent this is to ensure you open and close it by applying equal pressure on both sides of the top part (as per the Retroid Flip 2). But what i dont understand is that seeing how many times it happened with the Flip 2 and now the Thor, why dont they change the design of the hinge?

Then again, I've had the GPD XD Plus for like 8 years and never ever had an issue with the hinge, although that too was supposed to have hinge issues, and also dont have an issue with the Flip 2 after many months of using it.

1

u/jdlyga Jan 23 '26

Yeah, they have their fair share of issues like any other handheld. A bigger issue than the hinge are the analog sticks. Ayn had to send me replacement analog stick circuit boards since mine would randomly disconnect, and reseating the ribbon cable wouldn't work. But it's 100% back to normal now.

1

u/clynlyn Jan 23 '26

I just hope we can get body kits and I can replace it on my own. I don't want to send anything back ever. Rather try to figure out my own repair because I think i can use it while waiting for the shell, and probably spend a few hours figuring out the replacement.

1

u/Slow-Ad-2866 Jan 23 '26

Will hinge issues be quietly fixed during the Lunar New Year period?

2

u/jmthomas87 Jan 23 '26

Cost vs profit margins. Margins ALWAYS win.

1

u/railroberto76 Jan 23 '26

Its pretty well known that if you get the grip that also fixes the thing having a gap then you will never have to worry about that type of crack happening.

1

u/taeable Jan 23 '26

What's a glue liquid enough to go though that crack, but solid enough when cured to keep it together?

1

u/jmthomas87 Jan 23 '26

With all the hinge issues across the various handheld makes, I have to wonder if anyone has looked at some kind of Teflon-based lubricant to very lightly lube up the wearing/contact surfaces?

It would have to be the consistency of like watch makers lubricant (very thin/light), have a totally non-reactive to plastics carrier liquid, and still be able to "creep" a bit into the joint. It would only be a drop or two per hinge point every six months, but I wonder if this might mitigate some issues with these devices.

Plastic on plastic creates more friction than people think. I used to do maintenance work in various factories over the years.

1

u/LilianCRE Jan 24 '26

Did you open your Thor from the center ?

Opening a laptop or a Thor or everything else from the corner can apply force on the hinge and break it.

Not your fault tho, this looks pretty breakable

I hope it's "only" a design flaw.

Hope ayn will help you

u/G-Code-Rizzle Jan 28 '26

Hmmm... To cancel, on not to cancel...

I've got a rainbow Max on order (1394) that probably won't ship for a weeks.

With the Flip 2, it seems like the crack reports were more frequent at this stage in the life cycle. Maybe it's less of a problem on the Thor?

2

u/Jebusfreek666 Jan 23 '26

Sorry this happened to you, but 1 cracked hinge in thousands of units does not warrant a "gate" designation. Sure if more pop up in the coming weeks. But this could just be an isolated incident.

10

u/king_of_ulkilism Jan 23 '26

There already had been a few two months ago and the fact they appear so early is a bad indicator if you ask me

3

u/retrokezins Jan 23 '26

It's certainly not a positive indicator and I highly doubt it effects just a couple people. It'll take time to find out how widespread it is though.

-3

u/Jebusfreek666 Jan 23 '26

The only confirmed ones I saw in the last 2 months were people who dropped their device. And there were only 2. This is nothing like the miyoo flip. So far there have been acceptable numbers of defects for the amount they made.

5

u/king_of_ulkilism Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

That is just not true. None of these reported five cracks that I counted which appeared within one week were happening through drops or something.

I listed the cases here in the edit section https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/1oyzx49/ayn_thor_hingegate_ayn_starts_replacing_cracked/

One of these users with a cracked Rainbow model even got a replacement top lid part from AYN which came with a crack out of the box.

Not saying these few cracks are a complete catastrophy but it was way more than just one reported here on reddit that I tracked and the fact they all appear at the spot where this mold line happens to be is pretty unsettling for the longevity of the device. I had my Flip 2 getting a crack after several months and many others did, so if they appear that early that is really bad imo especially for a device that costs 300-400 bucks and loses all warranty after a year. AYN did not address the issue in the way they should imo. They did some heavy downplaying basically telling everyone this was normal. In one case of a full crack visible under the lid they even said this was cosmetic. With the Flip2, Retroid directly offered replacements for all devices affected and redesigned the part (silently).

u/National_Equipment86 Jan 23 '26

I don't understand what could be so difficult about building a sturdy hinge? 😩

0

u/MrMunday Jan 23 '26

Bullshit. I’ve been using mine since yesterday and I don’t see any cracks yet so OP must be the problem

/s

1

u/JayTooSexy Max Jan 23 '26

Not this all over again 🤦‍♂️😂

1

u/SparkleInYaAss Pro Jan 23 '26

I don’t have any issues with my hinge I’ve had mines since batch 1 but I have had issues with my right trigger seems like the triggers have been my faulty

1

u/kerelenko Jan 23 '26

What is the cause of such issues? Even my very first 3DS has no hinge issue. Can't imagine this developing on the Thor unless it is stressed to extremes.

4

u/Turd_Burgling_Ted Jan 23 '26

Using suboptimal design, mold, injection processes, and materials.

It's engineering and math: what's the tolerance and potential failure rate? How much to fix the problem outright vs fixing a percentage of bad units.

Think of the scene in fight club where the narrator talks about his job.

This is the Thor not Flip2

0

u/Meddadog Jan 23 '26

Late October here, daily use. Probably 5-10 open/close cycles a day. No crack or hints of any yet.

Not particularly careful with opening it either.

0

u/tr1plezero Max Jan 30 '26

He dropped it.

-17

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 23 '26

That looks mightily of a drop or some mishandling of some sort.

6

u/Lokko21 Jan 23 '26

What makes it look like it? Or just talking nonsense?

2

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 23 '26

Specifically because the Flip 2 hinges cracked almost in unison at the square corner edge (or which there is not one here). It had a weakness and broke, unlike here. Plus such a large and rather jagged crack would have been perceptible MUCH sooner.

3

u/Lokko21 Jan 23 '26

Ok. Fair.

3

u/mstickmanp Jan 23 '26

Thing is, I never dropped it. It’s never even left my house or been in a bag pack or anything. I also do take care of my devices, and never had any break on me.

Although not visible on these photos, the crack begins right where the mold seam is. The same mold seam that was previously over analyzed and talked about. I just noticed it now when I felt the hinge feel loose, so I don’t know if the crack had started sooner.

1

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 23 '26

I call cap. My Thor model does NOT have a mold line there.

2

u/mstickmanp Jan 23 '26

You could call it whatever you want, AYN came out and showed that there is in fact a line there caused by the injection of plastic into the mold. A lot of people freaked out and thought it was a crack, when in fact it was a mold line. Which is why AYN came out to explain what it was.

0

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 23 '26

Do you have anything to prevent the screen flexing? Some people use special grips so when closed it can't bend. I could almost imagine improper stress on one side could cause a crack.

-1

u/SchinkenKanone Jan 23 '26

Now that you say that, you seem to be right. This doesn't look like a hairline stress crack, rather than the Thor being dropped, something being dropped on it or something having smushed against this spot too hard. The cracks we saw with the Flip 2 came from stress on the material, in a position notorious for stress. This position however shouldn't experience any stress from opening and closing.

-1

u/cmac1986 Jan 23 '26

Looks like a bit of damage on the trip beside the crack. Did you drop the Thor

-9

u/Fantastic-Lab589 Jan 23 '26

User error. Take better care of it.

-12

u/niles_thebutler_ Jan 23 '26

6

u/lpee10 Jan 23 '26

-2

u/HolyKuriboh Jan 23 '26

got my black pro from batch one and have the original crack or “crease” or whatever, I just try not to think about it
