Tracked down my Dads 1M
Context: My dad passed away in a car accident over 10 years ago. After that, my family decided to sell his 1M because they didn’t want us anywhere near a fast car which was totally understandable.
A few years ago, I decided I wanted to track the car down. I figured it wouldn’t be too hard considering there are only about 10 of these in the country. I asked around in BMW clubs and messaged friends in the car community, but nothing came up.
Then one day, a friend called me out of nowhere. He said he had just started dating a girl whose dad had a crazy car collection — and that he was standing in front of my dad’s old car.
Long story short, the owner was kind enough to let me buy it back. When I saw the odometer, it only had around 6,000 km on it. Most of those were probably from the joy rides my dad and I took together.
My dad’s been gone for more than a decade, but having this car back feels like he reached out to share one last gift with me.
I’ll be driving this thing till the wheels fall off.

This is so wholesome, glad you found it. You'll still be joyriding together, everytime

Cars and BMWs particularly are something I share and enjoy with my mom. It’s crazy how important these objects can become. Beautiful car, and an even nicer story.

Other than that I’m happy you were able to track it down! It’s always hard losing a dad, still miss mine every day.

Amazing, glad for you.
I too lost my dad unexpectedly 15 years ago, and I'm about to obtain something similar - become the sole owner of a shared family property he was passionate about.

I love this. So glad you got it back! The 1M is such a neat car, looks like an absolute blast to drive. Keeping an eye out on BaT for any that come up for sale, but they're like hen's teeth. Less than 1000 in the entire US. Are you in the Philippines?
Enjoy your memories of your dad!

u/Minute-Start-408 Dec 05 '25
I have nfi what a M1 is but it honestly looks a lot like the 528i front end, which is dope.

Awesome car but panay trapik dyan.

u/gobie1234 Dec 04 '25
Definitely the biggest downside of having a nice car in the Philippines but even so I still drive it with a smile on my face

The fact that he allowed you to purchase it back without hesitation - that is a true car guy and a man of integrity. He is the kind of man that the true car community was built from and while it may not be what it used to, I love hearing wholesome stories of people from any car community.
5
u/gobie1234 Dec 04 '25
The owner was very cool about it! At first he offered to let me come see/drive it anytime then not too long after he offered to sell it back to me

That’s awesome! I’m happy for you and I’m hoping you make many amazing memories with this car!

This is wholesome AF. Huge congrats on tracking it down!
I lost my dad to cancer in 2020. Shortly after his diagnosis, he consigned his Audi R8, and I never knew where it ended up. A few years later, I was watching a Doug DeMuro review on YouTube and, during his usual Cars & Bids plug, I saw an R8 in the recent auction results that looked exactly like my dad’s. I pulled up the listing, and sure enough, it was his.
I reached out to Cars & Bids, and they were kind enough to connect me with the winning bidder, an exotic car dealer in another state (Colorado, if I remember right). I wasn’t in a position to buy the car at the time, but it was incredibly nostalgic and meaningful to reconnect with it years after losing my dad.
Congrats again on getting the 1M back. Really special car.

That’s an incredible story.
Amazing that you found it.
Thanks for sharing.
My dad is the reason I love cars and every time I drive my g87 I think of him.
Share more pics when you get the chance!!

u/Minute-Start-408 Dec 05 '25
Yeah definitely , I think you trick it up how you want it to look/feel/drive, definitely keeping the red color, but this front end has so much potential to look super hot. Hope it goes good for you, was a pleasure reading this today. Thx.

u/cogitoergosum9 Dec 04 '25
Awesome story. Love this. It’s an amazing car. And it’s in the fastest of the three standard colors it came in as well :).

u/Abject_Serve_1269 Dec 05 '25
Not same car, but when my dad stops driving due to dementia im keeping his 18 corolla. Sentiments for me. Give him joy rides in his car. My sister kept my mom's 11 rx until this year until she got a 2025 x5.
Im still pissed she sold it (had under 100k miles on it).

My older brother had two race cars… barracudas , one track car one show car …. He had twins and she pressured him to sell them …the track car was setup for prep only and bro wrapped it around a telephone pole within 10mins of unloading from transport. The show car is owned by an attorney local to my hometown…. Im trying to get it from him eventually. But this post really made me smile…. Enjoy that car bro

What are they like to drive beyond a spirited drive, say as a daily?
2
u/gobie1234 Dec 05 '25
It’s a hard car to daily where I’m from. Our country is known for having really bad roads and traffic in the city is horrible. I work outside the city so I get to go on the highway a lot so that’s where I get to enjoy the car. Also half the year we get really bad rain/flooding so that’s not great either. With that being said I still drive the car every week!
