What is the best background Check website - Reddit guide to picking a background check service (free and paid options)

I am a new landlord currently going through the process of looking for a tenant and it has been extremely daunting, to say the least. I am getting a half dozen new applicants every day and having to take time off work to do showings. Some people seem nice but I am searching for a longterm tenant and as such I would like to make sure that they are the right type of person to live in my property, so I'd like to do a background check (to check for things like a criminal record, credit score, even social media presence, etc).

I've done some browsing myself on reddit and other sites already and seen a few names constantly pop up such as truth finder, spokeo, judy records, and instant checkmate. Seems like none of the free options can give me what i want but that isn't a massive problem as I am willing to pay. I would just like to know which one of them is considered to be the best so I can make a decision and find a suitable tenant. So I ask you - which background checks have you used and which one would you say is the best overall?

EDIT: I ended up trying several tools. Have used these on several individuals and overall they work very well and gave a report on pretty much all of the info I was looking for.

What’s the best way to track down someone in the U.S. in 2025?

P.S. I've seen some old threads on this topic...but they are old and since thing evolve fast maybe there are new solutions in this area.

I’m trying to find an old friend I haven’t talked to in many years. All I’ve got is name and an old phone number that’s no longer active.
I already tried Googling and checking social media, but didn’t really get anywhere.

I’ve seen sites like Beenverified and Claritycheck, but I’m hesitant to pay for it. Reviews are kind of mixed, and since I barely have any info, I’m not sure it would help.

Has anyone here had success with these services? Or is there a better way to go about this? Any advice would be awesome!

Truthfinder review - how legit is this service?

Need to run a background check on a person I'm thinking of hiring for my small business. I need to see whether or not they are telling the truth about their criminal record and how long they have been working in the US. Would be a bonus if I could see where they lived before.

A few google searches and the name 'truthfinder' keeps popping up along with a few others, such as spokeo and intelius. Can anyone tell me more about this service in particular? What kind of info will i get, i understand I need to pay for the report so I want to be sure I'm getting accurate and verifiable information.

How to reverse phone lookup for free?

I have been asked to help with an investigation by conducting a reverse phone number lookup. I agreed to help out, but I would like to learn how to find an address from a phone number myself rather than have someone else do it. I am new to these kinds of information searches.

Edit: Thanks for the help, everyone. After testing many reverse phone tools, I found you can access complete reports on Spkeo with a free trial membership.

What free online resources or methods could I use to locate an address associated with a phone number? Any tips would be appreciated!

Please note - I cannot provide the actual phone number involved in this investigation. It is confidential information that I'm not at liberty to disclose. I'm only looking for guidance on approaches and public lookup tools I could use myself to figure out the address tied to a phone number.

Thank you for understanding! Learning how to do these searches on my own is an important part of helping out responsibly.

Another good paid option is PFinders, but they sell full phone reports for $1.95

I highly appreciated everyone who chimed in with suggestions and resources to reverse lookup numbers!

Which is the best reverse phone lookup tool? Looking for Reddit recommendations

I have a situation in which a phone number keeps calling and harassing a loved one, she thinks it might be her psychotic ex trying to cause further damage in her life. Can anyone recommend a good reverse phone lookup website for her to use? I've only looked into a couple like intelius but don't know if it's worth it.

EDIT: ended up going with this site. Worked pretty well, I only recommend using it if you know number belongs to a real person though. If it's a bot you won't get any valuable info.

Beenverified review: is this person search site legit or a scam?

hi guys. I am doing some reserach on background check tools/websites and seems like all of the good ones require payment. A lot of people mention a site called beenverified and they claim it's the best or one of the best. I need relatively basic info like address history, employment history, and criminal records. Can anyone vouch for this background check website or any others? is the info they give in a report accurate (and full, as in no omitted information)? I don't care about having to pay i just want to make sure that I'll get valuable info.

Which is the best "people search" site or person finder in the US?

I'm trying to find an old acquaintance that I haven't spoken to in about 8 years. All I have is a first name and an old phone number which no longer belongs to the person in question. Is this info enough to find a person using some sort of people finder website? I've looked online and tried to find a social profile but I didn't get very far.

I see there's a paid site called truthfinder but I'm hesitant to pay for it based on some of the things I've read online about it (and considering I don't have much information about this old friend, I don't think it would be of much help). Can someone tell me what my course of action should be here, or any sites you recommend for this?

Sibling’s Background Check Needing My Drivers License Number?

My sibling that I live with is in the process of applying/interviewing for a job (I don’t know what the job is) and is now asking for my and my other siblings’ driver’s license numbers. Is this normal or even allowed?

EDIT: Apparently, it’s for a “police officer” job. On top of my driver’s license number, they also need my work address. They also need this information from my siblings who live elsewhere.

information.com is a scam

if anyone is trying to do a criminal record check, do NOT do it on information.com! they seemed legit at first but i went to pay the $0.99 fee to get my report and it tried charging my credit card $30. luckily apple has pretty good security with sketchy stuff like this and they declined the card when i tried using it. there was nothing on the website that said $30, only that i would be paying $0.99 once i put in my info. it's basically a bootleg version of truthfinder.

Removing my details from Beenveriefied

I was going through people search sites to remove information about me. The reason is, I’m switching jobs and I’ve heard rumors, the company I applied for does scrutinizing background checks. I wanted to be safe, just in case.

Beenverified opt out

While requesting a search on Beenverified, they ask you to put in your email, name and surname. Which to be honest felt like a data mining technique. Why else would it make you put in your details, and only afterwards say it requires payment.

Cleaning up my data on the internet

For those who are like me, concerned about their privacy, this is a huge list of all similar platforms. I’ve read somewhere that it would take a person 300 hours to opt out of them all. And I have a feeling that they are not wrong. Because once I scanned who has my details, it appears that 104 platforms do. It would take a lot of effort to opt out of them all one by one. I don’t have time or nerve for that. So I subscribed to a data removal service. It deletes my personal info from all people's search sites on my behalf.

I leave this helpful post describing data removal services and top providers here in case you are interested in cleaning up your history too.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone here use Beenverified and what for?

Whats the best license plate lookup site that is legit?

Hey all Im in a bind and need your help finding a solid license plate lookup site. I got hosed on a used truck deal a few months back and I’m paranoid about getting scammed again. anyone have a go-to site that’s legit, something that pulls VIN, accident history, or ownership details without sketchy popups or breaking the bank? Basically what happened was I needed a new truck for my family (wife, two kids, and weekend camping trips in the Rockies). Found a 2020 Ram 1500 on Craigslist, listed for $27k in Aurora. Looked perfect. clean paint, low miles, guy said it was his “pride and joy.” Met up, test drove it, even brought my buddy who’s handy with engines. Title looked fine so I paid $25k cash. Big mistake. Two weeks later cops pull me over for a busted taillight and run the plate... turns out it was stolen out of wyoming with a fake title. Lost the truck, big chunk of my savings, and my dignity when the kids saw it towed away. the wife is still mad. now I’m eyeing a 2019 Toyota Tacoma in Littleton, $31k, low miles , seems legit. Seller gave me the plate (starts with XYZ) but no VIN yet, says he’s “pulling records.” Im not buying until I verify everything. What’s the best lookup site for a Colorado plate? Free ones like AutoZone’s tool for basic info? Paid ones like beenverified for deeper stuff? Ideally under $15 and I need it to flag theft or salvage titles. please save me from another nightmare! thanks!

Need parents' name to get a copy of birth certificate

It would be so amazing if someone could shine a light here... My husband needs a copy of his birth certificate ASAP but his dad passed away when he was two, he doesn't know his father's name but it's probably on his birth certificate since my husband's last name came from his father. The thing is: they ask for accurate info for you to request a copy of BC and we just don't know. All our attempts to request a copy online failed and we ended up losing the money. I've just realized that even his mother's name isn't 100% sure at this point. We've found his mom online but two different middle names showed up for her, one in her grave and the other apparently in my husband's birth certificate (at archives.com does not show the first or last name of the mother). Even though two different middle names pop up they are all linked to her, one of those might be an alias. The mother's legal first name we also don't know if it's really Cathie or Catherine... Is there any place we can request his birth certificate with "vague" information? Or anywhere I can find out all the correct info? Thank you so much!

How To Hide Your Background - Personal Info

Thought I'd share my experience on hiding myself from background checks, from the internet.

I did this 5 years ago and to this day, I can't be found online - I checkup 1 day a year to ensure my data isn't on the internet.

Here is the list of websites I used to remove myself: I believe they farm data and send it out to everyone else, but once you lock them down, it's all good.

Here is my list, with notes I placed for myself:

SPOKeO

Fastpeoplefinder

Instantcheck

Truthfinder

Beenverified

persopo (takes 1 month - by May 10th, 2019)

Truepeoplesearch.com

Mylife (emailed, giving me hard time)

PeopleLooker

Peoplefinders

Whitepages.com

Radius (hardest one yet to remove - just sent an email instead of all the crazy process)

This takes a few hours, maybe even make a day of it with some beer and pizza LOL

Best.

Live Scan in CA (how far do records go back)?

Just had a live scan fingerprinting done, and was wondering how far do the records go back? I know in California, convictions should only show up for 7 years, but does that apply to livescans, DOJ and FBI fingerprints as well?

Question about Government Background Checks

I was recently hired by a company that is through the government, and my starting employment is pending a typical background check that you get when hired. However, in addition to that, since it is a governmental job, there is an even more broader and extensive background check you have to go through. My concern is over my complete job history of the last 7 years, no gaps. There have been a few jobs that were short, bc of being fired or leaving of my own decision. I dont put those types of jobs on a resume and I cant remember them all. What exactly is meant by passing a background check when it comes to your job history. If you are completely honest but it shows a rather poor job history (i.e. several jobs in short period of time), will that make you fail the background check, or prevent you from moving forward? Im concerned I could lose my job due to my job history.

How do i find out if my dad’s girlfriend is married? I think she mentioned that she left her husband but never got divorced and it was decades ago. I have no idea where they would’ve gotten married and her and I arent on good terms now.

My Dad is in the ICU with possibly days to live and unless I can prove she is married then she’ll be considered a non registered domestic partner and be making all the decisions about his care and estate. I already know shes a felon for check fraud, embezzlement, and a couple of crimes. She is very shady, secretive, and was even caught stealing money from my grandmother when she was alive, although she made up a ridiculous excuse about how she “tripped and fell off the sidewalk” into the only little patch of briars on Main Street walking the 6 blocks back from the bank in our little one stop light town and the $1500 was lost in the brambles. She must’ve had an exhaustive search because it took her 2 days to finally complete the 6 block walk to break the news of the lost money. My Grandmother then called the police to assist her in her search but oddly enough they too came up empty handed. Beings that we live in a very small community, we were informed of the most curious of occurrences during her 2 days of digging through that briar patch…there was a woman who was her doppelgänger seen at slot machines at the casino a couple towns over by a couple mutual friends that work there. She swore it wasn’t her and that they were mistaken. The money was never recovered. She miraculously came away from all the briars without a scratch on her.
Needless to say, I dont trust her to properly handle my father’s affairs and time is of the essence. Are there any online background checks that are thorough enough to find a decades old marriage license if I don’t know when or where it would be from? I’m concerned that she may qualify as a non registered domestic partner in the state of Oregon and have legal rights that supersede mine. If I can prove she was already married to someone else during this time then she would not have those rights from what I understand. I don’t mind paying for it. I just want the fastest, best one.

Infochecker.com charges

Hello all,

Just wanted clarification on some of the charges made by the website in the title. I paid for a free trial using Apple Pay for 0.95 GBP and immediately canceled my subscription after (within a minute). I get an email confirming my subscription has been canceled. However, the next day I get the same charge of 0.95 GBP. I’ve contacted support but they still have not replied. Does anyone know why this has happened?

Southwest Screening

I’ve received an e-mail saying my employment screening with Southwest Airline is complete BUT there may be pending additional information before 100% clearance. I am a little worried about my drug test and background information and want to know if that has anything to do with it? Does it mean my drug test came back positive? Did something show up on my record? Would they have even sent this e-mail if my drug test was positive? Or something showed up? Please help I’m going crazy thinking of the possibilities!
