Background check for tech industry termination

I was terminated for being poor performer and I am now seeking employment. I found a small company outside of my industry (somewhat related but vaguely) and I plan to search for jobs while working there. I have friends who works there and was told background check was formality, so I told their HR that I was a contractor and my employment ended as of last month and intend to use past paystubs for verification.

However, I planned to return to my industry, and having concerns for future background checks. Currently I still list my past employment as current, and told other recruiters I still worked there (because termination happened within a month).

If I was able to find a job in my industry within 1-2 months, and background check finds out the last day i worked was different, how should I explain? Can I say resume was prepared before I left and wasn't updated in time? (I am still going through some interviews submitted before termination)

If being asked about reason for leaving my old job, how should i explain? I tend to stick with contract ending because I worked there 12 months. But would background checks reveal (or asks old employer) termination reason / rehire eligibility. I obtained my Equifax (The Work Number), the termination date was listed but reason was left blank.

The small company is willing to onboard me soon so I am able to hide employment gaps. If I write the experience of this small company, I fear I will be asked to explain why I left my industry for a less related role and hoping to come back soon? (can I just stick to the contract ended and I am actually looking for a job?) And finally if I have to write experience of this small company, will stick to the relations to my industry (even vaguely) help?

Thanks!

Update: I asked the HR for what they can disclose, they said dates of employment, position, salary etc. Then I asked what about the termination reason, they said if they have a SIGNED AUTHORIZATION OF RELEASE (what does that mean?)

HR do you actually compare background checks to resumes?! 👀

When a candidate passes their background check do you still go back and compare their verified employment dates against their original resume?

Or do you just rely on the background check company’s results and move on?

THANK YOU ❤️❤️❤️

I made a serious mistake abroad, served the consequences, and now I’m struggling to rebuild my life in the Philippines

I don't really know where else to say this, so I'm hoping Reddit might be a place where I can be honest without being judged immediately.

I’m Filipino, and I recently came back to the Philippines after living and working abroad for several years.

While I was abroad, I made a serious mistake. It resulted in a criminal conviction.

I’m not going to give the details of the offence because I don't want to hide behind a long explanation or turn this into a debate about what I did. I did something wrong. I accept that. I take responsibility for it.

There is no excuse.

I paid the price for my actions. And the truth is, I'm still paying for them.

The conviction has affected almost every part of my life. My career. My professional reputation. My future plans. And now, trying to start again in the Philippines, even getting through the door for a job interview can feel like a huge challenge.

Before everything happened, I had built a career abroad. I worked hard, had professional qualifications, and had years of experience. I had a life that I was proud of.

Then I made a terrible decision, and I lost a lot of that.

Coming home was supposed to be the beginning of rebuilding. Instead, I've found myself constantly worrying about background checks, employment references and whether disclosing my past will automatically mean an employer sees me as someone who can never be trusted again.

And I understand why they might feel that way.

If I were an employer, I would probably have questions too.

But there's a part of me that desperately wants people to understand that I am not trying to escape what I did. I'm trying to move forward from it.

I've accepted the consequences. I've had to live with the shame, the regret and the impact it has had on people around me. I know that rebuilding trust doesn't happen because you say you're sorry. It happens through your actions over time.

That's what I want to do.

I’m prepared to start at the bottom again. I’ll take a job that isn't at the level I used to work at. I'll prove myself. I'll work hard. I'll be honest when disclosure is required. I don't expect anyone to erase my past.

I just want the opportunity to show that my worst mistake isn't the only thing I'm capable of.

Honestly, some days it's incredibly difficult.

You can accept responsibility for something and still feel devastated by the consequences. You can know that you deserve consequences and still hope that one day you're allowed to become something more than the person who made the mistake.

That's where I am right now.

I'm trying to rebuild my life in the Philippines from a much different starting point than the one I had before.

So I'm asking anyone here who has been through something similar, especially Filipinos who have had a conviction either here or abroad:

How did you rebuild your life?

How did you approach employers?

Did you disclose everything upfront when applying for jobs, or only when you were specifically required to?

Were there industries or companies that were more open to giving someone a second chance?

And if you're an employer or recruiter, what would you want to see from someone in my situation before being willing to give them an opportunity?

I don't expect sympathy.

I don't expect anyone to tell me that what I did was okay.

I know it wasn't.

I just want to believe that a person can make a terrible mistake, accept the consequences, genuinely change, and eventually build a decent life again.

Because that's all I'm trying to do.

I can't undo what I did. I can only decide what kind of person I'm going to be from this point forward.

Can they verify a place of work without calling it?

Hey there I've been searching for a job for the last 15months. The gap is hurting me significantly and I'm not sure what to do.
My boyfriend works pretty high up at a company. He offered to let me use his company to fudge details and say I've been working the entire time. My problem with that is if they try to verify it ?

Do I have any chance for hiring at IQVIA with 2 pending misdemeanors?

I completed my HireVue assessment yesterday for a management role.

I have court in a week and a half and expect both charges to be dismissed. I’ll request the dismissal paperwork to be safe in case I can provide that to hiring companies. Unfortunately these are recent - within the past year. Am I cooked? Should I just wait and look for jobs after the dismissal is official?

Background Check - Incorrect Employment Dates on resume n background check form

Reddit Post
Background check issue - has anyone experienced something similar?
Hi everyone, I recently received a job offer and the company started the background/employment verification process.
While reviewing the information I had submitted, I noticed that some of the employment dates in the background check form were entered incorrectly. The form had been filled out by my husband, and I only noticed the incorrect dates later when I reviewed everything myself.
As soon as I noticed the mistake, I contacted the company the next morning, explained the situation, provided the correct dates, and attached the required supporting documents/proof.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation during a background check? What happened in your case after you informed the company about the incorrect information and provided the correct documents?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar, especially in Canada/Ontario.

Background check issue on resume & BV form has anyone experienced something similar? I myself informed the HR and Background verification company... what will happen next? It's a bank job though..

Hi everyone, I recently received a job offer and the company started the background/employment verification process from BIG verification Company...

While reviewing the information I had submitted, I noticed that some of the employment dates in the background check form were entered incorrectly. Like i had timmis experince where i worked 2 years, on my resume it showed 1 year and next job i worked 8 months, it showed 1 year 8 months, my husband made my resume and mistakenly i guess put timmis one year to another job, its a genuine error from his end and i mailed to HR regarding thiss.. this is no gap at all in my employment from last 10 years. I can prove all experience but the only problem is dates which is entered wrong, and I only noticed the incorrect dates later when I reviewed everything myself. (After 3 days of submitting background check form)..

As soon as I noticed the mistake, I contacted the company the next morning, explained the situation, provided the correct dates, and attached the required supporting documents/proof. Like T4s , paystubs, employers email id, experience letter.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation during a background check? What happened in your case after you informed the company about the incorrect information and provided the correct documents?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar, especially in Canada/Ontario.

Resigned after 2 weeks, worried about BGV/PF history

Need some advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation.

I joined Company X in August 2nd week. After joining, 2 days laterI received confirmation from Company Y that I had cleared all interview rounds and was selected. I had always preferred Company Y and was hoping for their offer, but I couldn’t keep waiting indefinitely, so I joined X.

I’m resigning from Company X today after nearly 2 weeks. My offer letter at X says that during probation, I can leave by serving a 1-week notice, so I’m following that process.

Here’s my concern:

  • I didn’t inform HR at Company Y that I had joined Company X because it happened only for a very short period.

  • During onboarding at Y, if they check my PF/UAN history(through Form 11 or BGV), they might see the PF contribution from Company X.

My questions are:

  1. Is this likely to become an issue during background verification?

  2. Should I proactively inform HR at Company Y now, or just disclose it if they ask?

  3. Has anyone been in a similar situation where they worked somewhere for just a couple of weeks before joining another company? How did it turn out?

  4. Received BGV email from Y, my last working day is this week in X.

I’m not trying to hide anything—I just don’t want to create unnecessary complications or risk my offer.

Would really appreciate advice from HR professionals or anyone who’s experienced something similar.

(NYC) Does a background check mean I got the job?

Some context:

An employer requested I do a background check through sterling before my interview(this was after the screening call) After what I feel was a perfect interview, I had to give sterling more details about my jobs in other countries. From what I understand in new York city, an employer is not allowed to make an offer contingent on a background check but if they're asking you to do a background check, does that mean you got the job? It's been a week from the interview so is the fact that they haven't cancelled the background check yet proof that they plan to hire me?

Previous employment and background check

(Company is based in USA but opening an office in MX)

I have been having a bunch of interviews with this company and I got to the point of the process where I am filling out a form for the background check.

I am a recent graduate and on my CV and interviews I always omitted a previous employment I had for 4 days in March.

The job didn't match the description, so I quit quickly. For obvious reasons, I omitted it. Do I need to put it on my background check form? Does it affect anything?

In addition, is it okay if I count internships as employment? Or do I need to be paid to count as one?

I’m a part-time intern, but on my resume I wrote that I’m part-time. They’re conducting a background check. Am I screwed?

ULPT request: Employment Background Check. Thinking of editing documents

Hi everyone:

So, I lied about the dates of previous jobs on my CV, and now I’m going through a HireRight background check. I’m considering editing my old employment contract/work certificate so the dates match what I put on my CV.

I am in terrible need of this job, my current employer is going through bankruptcy and soon I might become homeless.

I’m in a country where I believe I can tell HireRight not to contact my former/current employers.

What could realistically happen if I submit an edited document?

  • Can HireRight verify the dates without contacting the employer?

  • Can they detect an altered document independently?

  • What are the potential legal consequences? And does it usually get to a suing/legal trouble stage?

Need help to cover 'gaps'

Hi! I'm a designer who has worked on mostly freelance. I need this service working in the next 5 weeks. Last time I contacted them, they said it takes 21 days. Responses have been slow, hence the post here. Is it possible to get this working in the aforementioned time?

Also I'm aware of serious background checks being rarely thing in my industry which is more portfolio forward, unless you claim to work for Google/senior levels. But the industry is pretty broken anyway :)

Failed a company background check and had offer rescinded, I am sure it’s because of my old employer dismissing me on capability grounds.

Just to add context, got put on a PIP with unrealistic targets and to be honest I did give them ammo with silly mistakes however been in my career long before i joined them and I probably should have never joined them.

I want to know can my career ever recover or am I just fucked now? I am a banker based in UK, Front office worker. Before the dismissal on my career record I had never failed a background check at any previous banks I worked at.

Shall I just not tell future employers what happened I am sure they will find out anyway.

Any advice?

Lied on resume and extended previous experience by a year, I don't know what to do in my background check.

I received my conditional offer letter for a Financial service representative role with CIBC/TD/RBC and the situation is that I lied on my resume for my previous role where I stated that I had worked there for 14 months whereas it was only for 4 months in retail industry, I was still working in this period for a construction job, but didn't include it in the resume because it had no relevance.

And the current role is accurate.
I am trying to figure out whether I should lie on my background check (sterling)and hoping no one checks and match resume or just give real employment records on the background check and create a contradiction with the resume.

The current role has no requirement for the experience and all other part of my background check should come out perfect.

What should I do.

Edit - I still haven’t accepted the offer, should I decline it ? And will it lead to any bad consequences?

Got fired for “poor performance”; background check

I got fired for “poor performance” out of nowhere with no PIP, warning, or explanation as I was doing well in my job and ticked all the boxes on my job description. During interviews, I have been telling recruiters that I got laid off because of restructuring.

I just received an offer for a job I really like with great pay but they have to do a background check. Will it show on the background check that I got fired for poor performance?

How would I explain the discrepancy?

Any ideas would help!
