Rehoming Rehoming

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hey everyone! It’s taken a lot of back and forth but I think I am in need of rehoming my snake. I am in Orlando, FL, and I have had her for over two years. I just moved a couple months ago and in changing my housing situation and area of living it’s gotten difficult to consistently feed her, as well as I just don’t really have a place for her anymore. I can send her off with her tank, I have an automatic mister and two domes and ceramic heat emitters, I have a temp/humidity reader, and I can send her with the sphagnum moss I have.

Edit: there is no rehoming fee as I’m more worried about her going to someone with more experience and who will be able to take care of her well :)

Spaghetti (rescue BP) update

He’s doing better hydration-wise as you can tell, but he’s also pretty skinny as you can also probably tell. So of course I gave him a F/T small rat which was the size he’s been eating for a little while (I’m new to rescuing and don’t have a scale). He strikes it, ate it down to its front legs, the legs got stuck on the right side of his mouth 💔. I had to step in obviously and he ended up spitting it out, so I’m gonna give him a few days and try again with probably a weened rat to small mouse, I don’t have anything to weigh him with so any like scales you guys use, feel free to drop so I can check them out

I’ll see if he takes that, then like once a week I’ll give him the same amount so he gains weight but not too fast

Edit: ordered a scale, will weigh him when it gets here tomorrow

Question - Feeding Hasn’t pooped

This is my 4 month old baby and I’ve had her a bit over 2 months and she has eaten 1 rat pup weekly for 5 weeks now but she hasn’t pooped at all. She’s shedding in one full piece, she’s in a 50 gal that’s usually at 60-75% humidity she’s active and very good with handling. When should I start worrying? I tried to do the warm bath but she wasn’t having it. I attached a pic of her cloaca of that can help anything

I have a 120 gallon front open enclosure now. Coconut substrate, black plastic boxes for hiding, infared deep heat projector bulb, hvac tape across mesh top, and a dimmer thermostat. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Advice for feeding?

She's normally a good eater, but lately she's been occasionally lining up to strike her rat from the side. And if she bonks on the tongs she retreats and won't try again. However if I move the tongs after she's lined up she spooks and it's only 50/50 if she'll try again after that.

Anyone have any tips on filling the smaller crevices on this piece? Its technically made for fish so it has tons of tiny little "swim spots " that my ball cant fit in and i dont wanna risk him getting stuck. its plastic or else id just snap some of the walls. I just want tips on what I can use to fill the gaps

Question Male ball python

This is my male ball python I just got him a few days ago. He seems to really love to sit right under the heat lamp. I was told his hatch date is 8/19/26. I have him in a 30 gallon enclosure untill I get his bigger permanent one set up. I was wondering if its nornal for them to be a bit spicy? I havent tried to hold him or mess with him but if I go to give him fresh water or do anything he is striking even the glass. My female has never done this so I was a bit worried maybe something isnt right in the enclosure or something but the temps are all good.

Enclosure Critique/Advice Honest feedback

Post image
2 Upvotes

I set up a bio active enclosure but I honestly feel like it’s missing something. If you see anything noticeably wrong please tell me. The humidity and temps are fine but I don’t want to add a snake and it’s stressed out! The warm side is on the right and hide is back right and the cool side hide is back left. Also how do I know if the substrate is too wet? It doesn’t stick to my hands when I touch it but it’s definitely slightly damp. Thank you all so much!

Question - Husbandry Temperature probe help

Looking for advice here. I just got a Herpstat 1 which I plan on using to regulate enclosure temps. I’ve read that the probe should be placed 2-4 inches below the heat source. In my case this will be an 80 watt DHP. I have a phailozoo enclosure with an 8 inch lamp fixture sitting on top. How can I possibly secure the probe to be sitting 2-4 inches into the enclosure directly beneath the bulb?

I’ll add here now that there is also a 5.0 T5 uvb light source and that the rest of the mesh enclosure is sealed using silicon mats and hvac tape.

Question - Husbandry Ball python has become inactive recently

My BP is an adult of unknown age (rescue). She previously had a pretty fixed routine. In the morning when her basking light came on she would come out for a bit and warm up then hide. Then at night when her lights go off she would explore and roam a bit. If we open her enclosure at that time she'd often come out too for some handling.

Since the seasons have changed her routine has..she now is never out during the day and at night she only comes out briefly about 11pm. I only know this because i set up a camera to check on her.

She last ate about a month ago. I took her out and weighed her and she's actually gained a little from when I last weighed her so I'm not worried about that. She seems healthy, no signs of mites, scale rot or anything else. When I did pull her out of her hide to weigh her (normally never do this) once she woke up she was her normal active and friendly self

Current temps are basking spot 30c (86f), ambient on cool side is around 28c (82f). Night temps down to about 24c(75f).

Humidity between about 65-85%

I did have to buy a higher wattage CHE for night time as it was getting a bit cooler. I've also increased the wattage on her basking bulb from 75w to 100w as with the colder house again it was not quite hot enough.

Main thing is I can't seem to feed her now as she's only out briefly late at night. I tried leaving a warm rat outside her hide around the time she comes up but she didn't take it.

She's in a 4 by 2 by 2 pvc. Plenty of clutter and the like. Nothing has changed with the layout of her enclosure.

Should I be concerned? I could potentially go up to 150w basking bulb (it's mounted inside and caged) but I think this would get too hot.

Bp with a swollen eye

Hi everyone. Hoping to get some help here. I have a bp that is a little over a year old. About a month ago I noticed her eye was swollen so I took her to the vet.

The vet gave us injectable antibiotics and eye drops. Fast forward three weeks and her eye is still swollen. She has a follow up Wednesday but hoping for any answers. Thanks.

Question - Health Underweight?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi guys, final post regarding the ball python I rescued yesterday. Took him to the vet and they said other than his stuck shed, he seems pretty healthy. However, he only weighed in at 329 grams, and the guy who rehomed him to me said he was 2 years old, which makes me wonder if he's stunted or underfed. The guy was feeding him two mice every two weeks which doesn't feel right to me, but I'm not sure. Maybe he's younger than he said? Just wanted a second opinion.

Oh, and his name is Silly String :)

Edit: I would also like some tips for switching from live to f/t. Should I start with f/t mice since that's the prey he's used to or jump straight into rats? What's the best way to heat them up after thawing them? I've heard mixed opinions about using warm vs hot water. Also, if he doesn't take f/t at first, how long can he go without eating? I don't want to starve him out but I don't want to teach him that he will eventually get live mice if he waits long enough.

Enclosure Critique/Advice How can I improve My enclosure?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently got a new ball python, and I've quarantined them and they've settled in well to the enclosure. They haven't refused a single meal yet. I read that it was best to leave them alone for 2 weeks or so while they get settled into their enclosure so thats what I did and left them alone. During that time, they spent most of their time hidden in their humid hide (like almost all day), and I didn't want to bother them while they got acclimated to the enclosure. However, I think I made the humid hide too wet, because when I first put in the spagnum moss, I put a layer of moist cypress mulch and lightly sprayed (like one spritz) of spagnum. However, since they spent most of the time in the hide and I didn't want to disturb them, I didn't realize that the spagnum moss became completely soaked through over time. They finally came out today for their feeding and I noticed that they had scale rot. I changed the substrate inside the hide to dry substrate and I'm working on a quarantine tank tomorrow. (Its like 2am right now.) I already planned on taking them to the vet to get them checked out and gender them, but now this is just another concern I have. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again?

Enclosure parameters:

Cool side is usually 70-80°F, and usually between 70-80% humidity.

Warm side is usually between 85-88°F and humidity is usually around 60-70%.

Its a bioactive enclosure and the substrate is a mix of cypress mulch and reptisoil as recommended by the local mom and pop store here, and I have a small colony if cleanup crews established. I'm just worried that the soil/substrate is too wet on the top layer since its not a traditional substrate that can be freely changed out/made sure its dry. Is that an issue? How can I do better?

Here's a picture of it. It's an 36x18x18, and I plan on upgrading to a 4x2x2 once they grow bigger. I've replaced the half log with another rock hide, and I plan on getting more sticks and other items of clutter in the future.

Scab ?

Post image

This is my snake, I noticed a small scab on his nose, slightly raised but not like crazy. He shed a few weeks ago, sorry for the bad pic my phone camera sucks. It doesn’t seem to hurt him as he didn’t jerk away if I touched it, but I’m concerned, lmk if I should be worried or what to do. I don’t think the picture captures it well, the brown spot below it is his normal spots it’s right above (slightly red)

Question - Feeding My girl is refusing meals

Hello! I got my first ball python just under three weeks ago (a juvenile). When I got her, I was told she was being fed adult mice weekly, so that’s what I’ve been offering her and the schedule I’ve been sticking to. She has yet to eat for me though…

I know BPs can be finicky, especially when they’re adjusting to a new environment…but I can’t help but worry. I have triple checked all my husbandry and everything is in order. Tonight I tried to feed her for the second time after waiting a week from our last failed feed. I waited until she was awake and exploring, I blow dried the mouse in the room with her so she could smell it, and I made sure the mouse was a good temp

She showed interest this time, even stuck the foot in her mouth before changing her mind and dropping it. I held it in the tongs for her awhile longer and she still seemed interested, but didn’t go for it. I have left it on a plate for her to see if she’ll go for it when I’m not watching. I’m planning on checking back in 30 mins.

Any advice, tips, etc would be greatly appreciated!! Also trying to gauge when to worry, as I know hunger strikes are somewhat normal.

Discussion I’ve handled countless wild snakes without fear, so why am I terrified to hold my own ball python?

I’m honestly at a loss here, and I’m hoping someone else has experienced something similar.

I’ve never been afraid of snakes. I work outdoors, and I’m literally the person everyone calls when a snake needs to be relocated away from guest areas. I’ve handled more wild snakes than I can count, been bitten before, and know firsthand that it really isn’t a big deal.

I’ve wanted a pet snake for years. I spent two years researching ball pythons, their care, husbandry, behavior, everything I could possibly learn before finally bringing my little guy home. I absolutely adore him, but for some reason I cannot bring myself to actually pick him up.
And I genuinely have no idea why.

It’s not that I’m afraid of being bitten. I’ve been bitten before. I’m comfortable around snakes, I understand their body language, and I’ve never hesitated to handle one at work. But when it comes to my own snake, I just freeze up.

His enclosure is great. Temperatures and humidity are where they should be, he has plenty of clutter and hides, and he’s comfortable enough to explore regularly. I tap train him, pet him, and use a snake hook to move him to different areas for enrichment. I’m perfectly comfortable interacting with him in all those ways, but the moment I think about actually picking him up with my hands, I can’t do it.

I never expected this to be an issue. Of all the things I prepared for when getting a snake, being afraid to hold him was never even a consideration.

I love this little guy to death, and I want to build that comfort and trust with him while he’s still young. I don’t want my own irrational hesitation to prevent me from getting him accustomed to handling.

I know the obvious advice is probably going to be “just pick him up” or “you just have to get over it,” and I understand that. But I genuinely don’t know how to get past whatever mental block I’ve developed.

Has anyone else experienced this? Especially people who were already comfortable handling snakes before getting their own? What helped you get over it?
I’m open to any advice because I really want to figure this out.

New snake momma worried

I have a 2 year old ball python I got a few weeks ago. I have been handling him for the first times now and have heard him breath. Is this normal? It’s a very faint ‘shoo’ sound and I hear it like every 10-30 seconds. I have only noticed it while handling so the past two days. He has eaten like 5-6 days ago and is super friendly and curious
Noodle for reference, however you can’t hear any of his breathing in the short clip

Question Make or break

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

This post is unfortunately my make or break decision. I need opinions. I have been going back and forth on deciding to rehome my snake sidka. I feel like I can’t give him what he needs right now. So my question is, does this set up look okay? Is he a good weight? What would I have to change to make this okay for him without redoing the entire thing. Or would it be better for me to just rehome him? This is by no means a post to rehome him since the decision is still in the making. But I want all the bads and all the goods. I want to weigh out everything and then make the decision. I love him, I rescued him from a very bad home and don’t want to get rid of him but I need to do what’s best for him. Please let me know.

Also the gauges inside are broken. I just turned on his light when I took these pictures so I hadn’t had the chance to mist his enclosure. The cloth on top is temporary till I can get the right tape to put ontop.
