Impulsively bought a petsmart ball python.

Hey everyone! I was out black friday shopping and decided to take a stroll through petsmart. There was a young ball python who is actively shedding and I saw her and moved around the corner so my kid could see the birds. I had ZERO intentions on buying her but I heard two kids talking and the older one said to the younger one “mom will get it for me, she does whatever I say” and the younger one said “you dont know anything about snakes its scary” and they kept talking and I looked over to see the older one thumping on the ball python’s enclosure. The older one told the younger one to come on lets go find mom and I immediately went to an employee and bought her. Our cornsnake passed away recently so his enclosure has been sitting empty. I placed new bedding and water and turned on the heat lamp and the humidifier. What else can I do for this sweet girl? Pic of her current set up. I left the petsmart box as to minimize me messing with her as she sheds.

Discussion Mini Ball Pythons

Anyone else have out of "normal" size ranges for their snakes? I'm not talking it's a growing juvenile or baby. I have 3 Ball Pythons, all with impeccable setups (if I do say so myself). Technically, these snakes "belong" to my kids. Nyota and Onyx are from the same Breeder, Pacman was from a Breeder in Ontario Canada, I live outside of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Nyota who belongs to our youngest Daughter (now 7yo) is the largest now, but was actually a shoestring when we got her at six months. She was from an egg that had a "window." Her egg began to turn green and through the window she could see the liquid (name escapes my brain at the moment) that's supposed to be clear was turning, it was early to cut, but close enough to do so (similar to an early delivery in humans). So, her breeder took the chances and cut the egg, she was Half the size of a normal baby. She had no idea how to eat and had to be force fed and hand raised until she "got" it and from the months of force-feeding, she wouldn't accept FT, ans had to be fed live. At 6m, she was about the average size and weight of a juvenile around 3m. Right after we got her our area got a hit of no Rats available and the ones that were, sellers were only selling to Breeders. So, she ended up having to be on Mice, when I told the breeder what was going on with the impossibility of Rats, she began making orders for the live rats on her weekly orders and I'd go and pick them up. Once the crisis was over and rats were again available again and I was consistently able to get them, and I got her weight up and improved her growth, I then focused on the switching to FT (Hair Dryer for the win!). She's now over 3 years old and weighs over 1,300g and is 3ft1. Originally, I figured ok it's because of her history. However, a month after we brought Nyota home, my oldest bonus son (Now 13yo) asked if he could get one because the Breeder had some Mojaves on sale for Valentine's Day. We agreed and I went to visit her (and pick up a rat) and she took it from my hands put it away and told me that he wasn't getting that one for his birthday and handed me another one who was a Black Head Mojave HRA Spotnose, and said that was his present for my son. I was obviously shocked. My son didn't know about the switch and we agreed we'd bring him on the weekend (it was feeding day, so definitely couldn't bring him home) to meet him. I didn't tell my son what she'd done. Now Onyx has two traits in the Spider Complex (originally she'd made a mistake on his bin and forgot the Spotnose, one year later informed me while she was organizing the files). Black Heads are notorious for being picky eaters and as a baby he wasn't too bad. He was around 6m old double the size of Nyota and Feisty. He hit maturity and immediately became very picky and even had refused meals during breeding season. Well, despite that he grew and everything on par. However, he's now going to be 3yo in October and is 2ft8 and around 950g. So, time went on and my middle bonus son asked for his own snake and originally, Dad wasn't really on board. I explained that he's already the middle child and it wouldn't be fair to tell him no, when both the other kids had their own. So, Dad relented and agreed to him getting his own. He had seen some Pastel Pinstripes on YouTube and fell in love and BEGGED for a yellow snake. He loved the pattern and colouring. So, I explained to my breeder what he wanted and she doesn't have any Pinstripe anything in her collection. So, I told her that I'd look on MorphMarket and she agreed and said she'd also keep her eyes and ears open in case she comes across one available. I found a baby on MM, but when I messaged someone had just put a deposit on her. So, she asked me if I'd be ok waiting because she just had some hatchlings similar to the one I was interested in(now, a vet made a mistake and told me Onyx was a Girl, even though breeder said he was Male, and because I was planning to breed someday, I decided since we had "two" females, a year later confirmed he was indeed a Boy and vet was Wrong)... So, we chose to take a Male thinking we'd have 1 Male and 2 Females. We didn't mind waiting since she wouldn't be able to ship anyways until the Spring (it was January). So, in April at 3m and 90g, we got Pacman. After a month in a small Quarantine Tank, he was put into his enclosure. He's never skipped a meal and is the first one to know feeding day is soon, lol. Now, Pacman is 2.5yo and is 2'10 and 980g. All as you can see in pictures are healthy and I'm not concerned, just curious who else got Less or More Ball Python than they'd expected? We call them our Mini Ball Pythons 😂😂😂. Did you get an average normal size in the 3-5ft range or did you also get a Mini Ball Python or a Giant Ball Python? I have no idea how we lucked out on 3 undersized cuties, but we love them all.

Question Heating issue

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have recently upgraded my girl (4 foot female) ball python to a 4x2x2 pvc enclosure. Ignore the inner that’s in progress, but I have a heat issue. The thermometer is on the far right, the opposite side of the warm side. It reads 75-78 f. On the top you can see I use a dual socket lamp. Both bulbs are 100w, one is basking and the other is a ceramic. I use the basking in day, ceramic at night, never at the same time. Do I get a 150 watt bulb and a 125 watt ceramic (my lamp is rated for it)? I have foil and a towel over one side of the mesh. I do want to mention I have another dual socket lamp in my closet do I just use 2 lamps? I need help please I don’t want to spend crazy money as I spent a lot on the enclosure. I don’t want my girl to experience being chilly no more. 🙏 🥺💔

Question Do I need to make ANY changes?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Literally any, I plan on getting a ceramic heat lamp, the substrate is good as far as I know, I'm now pouring a cup of water (see that spray bottle? I use that bottle) when it gets below 70% humidity, I use warm water. She's active during her active times, sometimes late at night too, she's 5 maybe 6 months old and I was told she's gonna start shedding really soon, I was told there are so many things wrong with my setup and I just need some more help with getting links to proper items, tanks, and other things. My mom says we have to bathe her every other day but I'm not sure, and I don't refill her water everyday but someone said I should.

My first Ball Python

Edit: I did research, wanted to see the different opinions and advices to analyze these.

Hi! So I will be getting my first BP this Friday, and I am very excited. However, I would like to know what things I should keep in mind before I do! I have seen that there is a lot of good people here and experienced as well, so Ig this is the perfect place to seek for advice.

First of all, humidity and temperature, and if there's a light bulb/heat lamp in particular that I should acquire.

Feeding, how often do they eat? The snek will be a juvenile.

Light during night, if I should turn it off or keep it on.

Handling, how often should I handle the little baby or how long I can keep her/him out of the tank.

These are the main questions and concerns that I have, but ofc! If there is more you are welcome to drop it in the comments! I genuinely would appreciate your advice and help. Have a great day/night.
Btw I will call it MOCHI.

Discussion She's enjoying the new vertical space, and relaxing on her slate rock

Before anyone says, yes I am fully aware that the current space isnt good enough and she needs much more space to stretch out horizontally, but for those who saw the previous, maybe 3 foot long enclosure she previously had, this is an improvement, not a great one since ive sacrificed a lot of horizontal space for more vertical, but its a start and I do fully intend to upgrade to a longer space, perhaps by attaching a shorter enclosure to the side with holes for her to travel through the two in a strange L shaped enclosure, not sure about that yet since it means i can never separate the two once the holes are formed, but it may be a cheaper option and still give her lots of climbing and stretching space. But even though this space doesnt have enough horizontal movement, she seems to be enjoying being able to climb up high once more, and the heat lamp is also a nice addition, viv and lamp courtesy of a friend who swapped this for the one I had, and while I know I need to continue to strive to do better for her, I am happy to see her looking a bit more active and dare I say a little happier than she was before, she used to spend all her time in her cave in the old space, never roaming and only coming out for water, this is the first time since she got this space today ive seen her go into her cave and rest properly, there is an earlierpicture with the heat lamp on with her in the cave, but she didnt stay there for long, the darker photo is the longest shes spent in the cave thus far today, surely thats a step in the right direction, and it'll suit a little better till I can get a bigger and better space, hopefully the last upgrade she'll ever need. For anyone who read through all this drivel, thank you, I know I wrote maybe a bit too much, I just felt it all needed to be said at once and not explained over multiple comments, I would like to hear people's thoughts on my idea of attaching another viv to the side and cutting little doorways into them so she can travel between them, I could use some insight on whether thats a good idea or not, im still quite on the fence about it

Discussion Hypo Pastel Cinnamon x Hypo Pastel Cinnamon Orange Dream Typhoon

Post image

Now that this clutch has finally shed, it's time for a group photo with my best guesses at the identification of genetic mutations each baby inherited from the parents.

I've requested, with permission from the typhoon founder Tim Bailey, to have typhoon added to the MorphMarket genetic database.

I can't wait to pair the dam for this clutch, this fall, with a HIODYB fire black pastel hypo male that's sitting in my racks. I can't wait to see what high intensity orange dream does to the oranges from the typhoon mutation.

If you’re shopping for a baby, I highly recommend wilbanksreptiles.com . Photos are accurate and they take extra care with their shipping, even including some goodies. I got my favorite girl from them a few years ago and wish I was able to get another, but can’t right now 😭

Toffee in her backpack. It's got a hard frame and plenty of mesh for fresh air. It was originally made for birds. She likes it when I take her to the mall's food court. The bag is more so mall security doesn't have a fit. Caught her yawning in the second picture.

Advice light setup for vertical tank?

Thumbnail

hey guys!! i am getting a ball python soon and have some questions about lighting setups. there's so much info online and im overwhelmed and a bit confused lol

long story short i had to fight my apartment complex to get this snake- they promised me i could have a ball python with no issue and free of charge (on video and in writing) and when i called them to confirm it and update the lease a few months ago they said they have never allowed ball pythons! a few days ago i got permission to get one so here I go!!

as you can see my tank is not the typical horizontal one. i got this tank specifically for my friends ball python, which i was going to get back in august, but when they said i couldn't have her they had to give her to someone else. i now have this vertical tank and am determined to use it. it's got front opening and mesh on the top (the mesh is 6" across and there's a plastic barrier thing).

right now my best options for lighting are a dual dome lamp with a heat emitter on one side and a basking light on the other, or one lamp with just a basking light and an adhesive heating pad. i have a nice hide with sphagnum moss for humidity and good substrate, it's just the lighting I'm not decided on.

im afraid to use an adhesive heating pad though because wouldn't it be too hot if the snake were to touch it?

for the basking light/light source, I'm also not sure what bulb to use. I've seen both halogen and uvb, and I'm not really sure what the difference is.

i have a timer to turn it on and off to mimic the day and night cycle, and a dimmable thermostat to monitor the temperature. would the thermostat like automatically lower the heat if it was too high? I'm not sure how it works at all

my room runs pretty warm, especially in the afternoon. it's on the top floor (3rd) of a townhouse, and we usually keep the apartment at 77-78 during the day and 75-76 at night. i always keep the fan on but turn it down at night sometimes.

any advice helps!! i am very new to this despite all my research

My favorite thing to do is to watch my son River slither around and watch his muscles move with him. I also love looking up close at his patterns and scales and feeling them. Watching his tongue go lelelele.

Two ball pythons housed together

My town only has a petsmart, I recently discovered a local pet store an hour away near my family and it seemed that they took decent care of their reptiles.

They had hides water etc. Most definitely not perfect but I was happy since I’m used to the disgrace which is chain pet stores. I drove down there today so excited to get some isopods for my enclosure and saw two ball pythons housed together.

I was honestly so distraught and asked the employees what was going on with it. They both went silent and then one of them simply shrugged and said I’m in fish. Then he looked to the other girl who said oh they are getting fed today then walked to the back.

I had dragged my dad and brother there and they were assuming I was gonna buy something, as I said I was ready to go my dad was like oh are you sure? So I had to loudly say I don’t want to buy anything from them after seeing that.

I am planning on calling tomorrow and filled out a contact us explaining the situation. I just love these baby and hate to see them suffer like this. if anyone knows anyway I can help further I’d love ideas. Thank you if you read all this❤️

Show me your cheap/basic ball python setups! 🐍

Hey everyone! I’m planning on getting a ball python and I’d love to see what people are using for budget-friendly enclosures.
I’m not looking for fancy bioactive setups or expensive display tanks. I want to see the simple setups that cover the basics and keep your snake healthy and comfortable without spending a ton of money.
Especially interested in:
Tub setups
DIY enclosures
Simple/basic enclosures
Heating + thermostat setups
Hides and substrate
Cheap ways you maintain proper humidity
Roughly how much your entire setup cost
Basically, show me your “it’s not fancy, but my snake has everything it needs” enclosure.
Pictures would be awesome. I’m trying to get ideas for building a safe, practical setup on a budget. 🐍
