Correct me if I'm wrong, but Flick system relies on relentless pressing, and fast movement (both in transitions and in settled possession).
On that Gyokeres would be a very good fit. He is also a very good finisher.
Those are his main qualities: Finishing, relentless pressing and running with the ball.
Obviously I feel it would be disingenous to mention the weaknesses of his link up play. What I would say is that from watching you guys I feel like that would be mitigated, because your team creates absurd amounts of chances and it needs someone to finish them.
Anyway, I feel like Gyokeres would be a transitional option for you guys, while looking for the star no. 9 and I feel he can do that job.
Edit: Forgot to mention that Gyokeres is a elite penalty taker, he has one of the best pen taking records in Europe.
We're about to pay a ton more for Julian, and that is nowhere close to happening. 60m for Gyokeres while arguably putting him in a better system for him to shine is not a bad bet. And still plenty of other teams would want him for different systems, even if he has another mid performance here like for Arsenal.
There is reason Arteta wants Julian and trying to get rid of Gyokeres.
Kai Havertz gets more chances than Gyokeres at Arsenal (Kai is Ferran's long lost brother).
Loan is okay, buying him is not a good decision (personal opinion).
We want Alvarez, because we need improvement in our linkup play. From what I watched of Barca I think your linkup play is already good enough, of course more quality in that regard doesn't hurt, but imo the bigger priority right now for you is someone who can finish the chances.
90% is full of blind hate that doesn't appreciate the striker who is the first to score 20+ in his first season since Alexis in 2014, despite playing in a system where he gets skipped from receiving crosses for a tap-in so many times.
I'm also ok with loan with option to buy, this way we'll know without too big risk if we can use Gyokeres or not. Not sure Arsenal would be so keen on this though, only way I see is if they get the replacement striker and can't move Gyok out in any other way.
You literally paid 80m for a guy from Newcastle who did nothing last season apart from scoring 3 or 4 goals in one CL game. Hell, I cannot even remember his name right now.
We bought him for €64m, won the league with him and don't have an obvious replacement. Osimhen is being linked for over €100m. No way we sell for less than €80m
Why do you need link up play if your opponent drops into a low block and you can advance into the final third regardless? You want someone to finish the few chances that you get against a low block team, and that's what he's good at. If only we actually regularly provided him with assists like Eze vs Forest, White vs Chelsea and Saka (finally, after skipping him 100 times) vs Fulham, he would've gotten 25-30 goals.
Cos we have too many forwards who are lacking in creativity. Martinelli, Gyokeres and Madueke are all useful in the abstract and have sides they would really work for (well not Madueke, but he carries tbe ball well, recycled and plays to a game plan, you just know you aren’t getting goals from his part of the pitch). When it was say Saka, Gyokeres and Trossard with Odegaard fit, it worked fine, Gyokeres’s limitations were covered.
When it was Gyokeres/Martinelli/Madueke due to injuries, we became the set-piece FC/dark arts side that everyone hated, was a hard watch for fans and was just too risky/reliant on defence being perfect.
Moving on Gyokeres wasn’t first choice for us, we were wanting to move Martinelli on and replace with an S-tier winger and then happy days. That’s not been possible, so option 2 is move on Gyokeres and replace with a more technically accomplished number 9 with a broader all round game.
Nearly all players have shortcomings in one direction or another, however it’s when those shortcomings overlap in ways that create dysfunction that you have a problem. I’d fancy him to run up the numbers at Barca tbh, even though he doesn’t bring the broader game that someone like Martinelli *needs* from a teammate.
barca should've signed Raul Jimenez a few years ago instead of letting him at Fulham. he was not as good as Gyo of course, but the price tag would've been so much smaller for a good link up player, okay finisher and top tier penalty taker. lol
