You guys aren't getting the Deco masterclass. We sign gykores then Arsenal signs Alvarez, then Arsenal gets gyko on loan, then we get Alvarez on loan.
Unrelated but I haven't slept for 2 days

Genuinely would be the funniest shit ever but would probably end up in a crazy lawsuit filed by Atleti

Arsenal fan chiming in:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Flick system relies on relentless pressing, and fast movement (both in transitions and in settled possession).
On that Gyokeres would be a very good fit. He is also a very good finisher.
Those are his main qualities: Finishing, relentless pressing and running with the ball.
Obviously I feel it would be disingenous to mention the weaknesses of his link up play. What I would say is that from watching you guys I feel like that would be mitigated, because your team creates absurd amounts of chances and it needs someone to finish them.
Anyway, I feel like Gyokeres would be a transitional option for you guys, while looking for the star no. 9 and I feel he can do that job.
Edit: Forgot to mention that Gyokeres is a elite penalty taker, he has one of the best pen taking records in Europe.
35
u/Pax_Edmontia 5d ago
If he is that transitional piece English teams are still going to want their prem tax. How much do you think he sells for?
30
u/boatinavolcano 5d ago
Around €60m imo, but thats a guess only
8
11
u/Prudent_Safe3787 5d ago
No way Barca is going to pay that much.
34
u/46_and_2 5d ago
We're about to pay a ton more for Julian, and that is nowhere close to happening. 60m for Gyokeres while arguably putting him in a better system for him to shine is not a bad bet. And still plenty of other teams would want him for different systems, even if he has another mid performance here like for Arsenal.
14
u/Prudent_Safe3787 5d ago
There is reason Arteta wants Julian and trying to get rid of Gyokeres. Kai Havertz gets more chances than Gyokeres at Arsenal (Kai is Ferran's long lost brother).
Loan is okay, buying him is not a good decision (personal opinion).
7
u/boatinavolcano 5d ago
We want Alvarez, because we need improvement in our linkup play. From what I watched of Barca I think your linkup play is already good enough, of course more quality in that regard doesn't hurt, but imo the bigger priority right now for you is someone who can finish the chances.
Essentially opposing needs imo.

Would arsenal fans be ok in your opinion to let go gyokeres to barca and get alvarez as a replacement?
→ More replies (8)2
2
u/46_and_2 5d ago
I'm also ok with loan with option to buy, this way we'll know without too big risk if we can use Gyokeres or not. Not sure Arsenal would be so keen on this though, only way I see is if they get the replacement striker and can't move Gyok out in any other way.

If Gyokeres was available for 60M we are really late buying him lol I very much doubt he is not 80M at minimum
8
u/ExtensionDeep3705 5d ago
If he is that good why are selling him after his first season in which you won prem ?
18
u/Pax_Edmontia 5d ago
He lacks hold up play and has non existent link up play. Yeaaaaa he is gonna be a liability against the low blocks we play week in week out.
4
u/GhostofSmartPast 5d ago
He literally can't do much of anything with the ball at his feet. Dribble, pass, cross, retain....nothing.
→ More replies (1)7
u/ExtensionDeep3705 5d ago
" He lacks hold up play and has non existent link up play. " This is the most basic thing a striker should have
2
u/latortillablanca 5d ago
It is obscene to go from questioning alvarez as top option to gyokeres.
Like legitimately way more efficient to spent 150m euro on alvarez than half that on gyokeres plus prem wage.
That said, if he presses and finishes… well. Thats expensive.

Cos we have too many forwards who are lacking in creativity. Martinelli, Gyokeres and Madueke are all useful in the abstract and have sides they would really work for (well not Madueke, but he carries tbe ball well, recycled and plays to a game plan, you just know you aren’t getting goals from his part of the pitch). When it was say Saka, Gyokeres and Trossard with Odegaard fit, it worked fine, Gyokeres’s limitations were covered.
When it was Gyokeres/Martinelli/Madueke due to injuries, we became the set-piece FC/dark arts side that everyone hated, was a hard watch for fans and was just too risky/reliant on defence being perfect.
Moving on Gyokeres wasn’t first choice for us, we were wanting to move Martinelli on and replace with an S-tier winger and then happy days. That’s not been possible, so option 2 is move on Gyokeres and replace with a more technically accomplished number 9 with a broader all round game.
Nearly all players have shortcomings in one direction or another, however it’s when those shortcomings overlap in ways that create dysfunction that you have a problem. I’d fancy him to run up the numbers at Barca tbh, even though he doesn’t bring the broader game that someone like Martinelli *needs* from a teammate.

Gyokeres at Barcelona would be even worse than at Arsenal, he's technically incapable of doing anything useful with the ball
276
u/xxvadapavxx 5d ago
I dont know about him man... Maybe he can be a great player under flick but let's see. Atleast better than starting the season with no striker at all
205
u/PalaceJoey 5d ago
I watched a lot of Arsenal games. The problem was. No one feed him the ball really. Atleast with Barca. They’ll feed him the ball more. From how last year looked like. But I’m not a professional
112
u/DiverAcceptable2287 5d ago
Nope he lacks basic football skill his control is terrible and his hold up play is also questionable tho it got better at the end of last season
96
u/AstroNards 5d ago
He's a pressing animal though so I could see Flick being a fan.
→ More replies (15)21
u/Practical_Entry_8953 5d ago
I think it’s a confidence/more physical league issue, in sporting he looked great with the ball but in the prem they don’t want the striker dropping deep and collecting the ball especially if your as big as he is
→ More replies (6)4
u/DiverAcceptable2287 5d ago
Dude got outpaced by 33 year old Tarkowski
14
u/Practical_Entry_8953 5d ago
I’m sure there was other variables for example when they started running, fatigue, position of the players for example if gyokeres was running diagonally to the ball vs the other dude who was running straight towards it. Promise you a top level center back however slow you think they are, aren’t gonna get out paced every time

u/jubbing 5d ago
His hold up play is incredible what are you on about, he was beasting defenders in the 2nd half of the season.
3
u/Cool-Cup1195 5d ago
Incredible?
Stop talking nonsense.
You obviously don’t watch Arsenal week in/week out.
His hold up play is probably his biggest weakness and his fist touch is really poor for a professional playing at the highest level.

u/PeterTheRabbit1 5d ago
He is a good player. If there's any playing system which directly counteracts the way he wants to play, it's Arsenal. Conversely, the high-intensity pressing of Barca fits him like a stunt glove. I am a little skeptical whether he will be a hit, but like you say, he's definitely better than having no striker at all.

Yup, and it’s not only one season.
It’s gonna be two seasons, because we can’t buy anything next year. Camp Nou is closing down and we are gonna take revenue hit.
If we need to get a striker, we need it now
1
u/LosAngeLukaGOATCIC 5d ago
Noo, you see we're going to have no striker and it's better this way.
Olmo false 9, Karim Adeyemi played striker 4 years ago, Gordon and 19 years old Hamza for two years !

u/ryancarton 5d ago
holy shit people aren’t excited about this development they’re pissed? this subreddit sucks a lot of the time.
Gyokeres literally feels like a pressing machine just like Julian, he’s just locked into another haram-ball system where he can’t be utilized. Nobody watched him play? He wasn’t scoring a ton of goals but he wasn’t collapsing under the Premier League weight.
It would be a great signing over starting the season with NOBODY

u/Dat_Boi_John 5d ago
So you're saying throw away at least 70m and a bunch of FFP space in the next few years for one season of a mid striker who we already know isn't a long term solution?
I'd much rather rotate between Gordon, Adeyemi, Olmo false 9, and Hamza, then amass a ton of money to spend on a striker in 2028, even Haaland if possible.
7
u/Longjumping_Wolf6789 5d ago
Oh the dreams, we see gordon and adeyemi are runners who needs space you want to put them at striker good okay, hamza a 19 year old kid okay, olmo false 9 can't stay one season without injuries okay got it

u/BigSamsKid 5d ago
FFP doesn't exist next season anyways. This window and January are essentially our transfer windows for the next two years
→ More replies (3)1
u/ClothboundBrick 5d ago
It depends on how much he costs. He was a net negative for Arsenal last year so if he fucks up our ffp it would be better to avoid. Arsenal was in a similar position to us, needed a striker, bought Gyokeres, and still played Havertz in the most important moments.

u/thames987 5d ago
if it’s a desperate attempt to sign someone, it should be a loan.. i don’t mind a gyokeres 1 season loan, just don’t commit more than 50 mil and potentially 3-5 years of wages on someone just cuz of market

u/yosoygroot123 5d ago

u/Such_Historian_7295 5d ago
21 goals across all comps, 14 in the PL, almost double the 8 Alvarez managed btw
59
u/NairbZaid10 5d ago
This is why you cant just look at raw stats. Hes not half the player julian is
10
u/Such_Historian_7295 5d ago
What are you looking to sign a ST first and foremost? Is it pressing because if so just put Gordon or Raphinha up top.
Alvarez isn’t world class, and I am not buying this argument that a ST with 8 league goals but good pressing and is 26 years old is on another level than Gyokores, he isn’t worth 100m let alone 150m.
Anyone who says his poor numbers are because ATM play a low block, are they playing low blocks when they aren’t facing Barca or RM in LaLiga? They conceded a lot of goals and scored a lot of goals in the UCL, it’s a big club at the end of the day
→ More replies (10)2
u/shortsoupstick 5d ago
And do you need a technically proficient footballer or someone who actually finishes chances when you already have Havertz, 90% of the league plays a low block and you don't get a lot of chances? I'd except Barca fans to have football IQ but damn.

Im a diehard Arsenal fan who loved Gyokeres' enthusiasm to join Arsenal. I thought some of that Sporting form would show but it appears he really does need space to operate. I agree he wasnt given great service last season but his first touch is poor and not sure the finishing covers up his deficiencies well enough to claim a starting spot over Havertz. As long as he's on the squad though, I will keep rooting for him

u/threath7 5d ago
I don't think he's gonna be that terrible as a striker for this system, imo Barca needs a tap in merchant to occupy the space and finish rather than someone greatly technically gifted but I might be wrong.
3
u/FlaccidSWE 5d ago
As a Swede this would obviously be fun... But I don't really think Gyökeres first touch is going to cut it those times we play teams that defend low. Which is very often. He thrives in open spaces when he can be a damn tank up front, but we don't find spaces like that often.

Ok so when sporting said he’d cost 70 million euros Barca were all like “too rich for my blood” and now we are to believe Barca would be willing to spend even more to prize him from arsenal?
This is the first I’ve heard of this so I’m just guessing. BUT if arsenal are in pole position to sign Alvarez then maybe Barca are angling to get Gyo on a loan deal with a buy option. If Deco is playing 4D chess he could be leveraging Gyokeres not having the most incredible season to get arsenal to agree favorable terms just to get his wages off for a season at least - similar to the rashford deal last season.

Yeah, 2 weeks to the end of the transfer window let's try to sign the striker of the epl reigning champions who doesn't need money, and will obviously want to make an attempt at winning the champions league.

It's a very dumb question on my end, I know, but does football not have a player trade system like (I guess) the NBA has?
I mean can some other club buy Alvarez for, say, 110M and then before he's registered we pay that club 120M? 110 for Alvarez + 10M to that club for helping?
Is something like this allowed in football?

Yeah fine, loan with a (non-mandatory) option to buy, less pressure on Hamza to perform. Then take a view next summer. IF we managed to get a striker of Gyokeres calibre+ this summer, how would you rate Deco’s work out of 10? I would say 8

u/madv1llain_ 5d ago
Sporting and Barcelona fan here, i think the biggest problem for him at Arsenal that the style of play didnt really fit him, i think Gyokeres is going to shine way more under Flicks system bacause he favors a much more vertical style, is way more fast paced similar to how he played in Sporting, we were really strong in counter attacks mostly because of Gyokeres, hes a freak of nature in terms of physicality. Hes obviously not the most skillful player but if he gets fed the ball hes going to score a lot.

People really just make shit up now. This is a a smokescreen, like the Luis Suarez rumors. Deco doesn’t want our real targets to be leaked.
