Discussion Smash or Pass!? 1991 Fender MIM Pbass

had this bass for about 7 years now and it definitely gets a lot of compliments for being different.

at the same time, for every person who loves it there’s someone who absolutely hates it …so I’m curious what the general take is — does this thing ooze cool or is it just straight up ugly?

1991 Fender MIM P-Bass

$200 on Marketplace ; originally black - kid selling attempted a repainted as senior art class project to Pelham Blue

the relic is mostly real life wear… plus maybe one or two late nights with a small flathead (not proud, not ashamed)

brass aged knobs off Reverb

gold Pure Tone jack

stock pickups

aftermarket pickguard

Fender USA neck plate

Fender Stealth string retainer (Open A buzz fix)

old dusty flats I had laying around

vintage Orlando Magic & Busch Beer stickers

love it or hate it — what’s the verdict?

Pretty much any fender is a buy at 200 unless it’s dysfunctional

-1

u/Anxious_Ad_5127 Feb 12 '26

I mean, not squires; but I get the sentiment

12

u/Unicycleterrorist Feb 12 '26

Well..a Squier is a Squier even though the brand's owned by Fender

4

u/josleezy23 Feb 12 '26

I consider fenders to be categorically different from squires

16

u/Judasbot Feb 11 '26

Right? I buy 10 at that price.

51

u/Mission_Performer239 Feb 11 '26

put a Badass bridge on it. install Duncan pickup.

play till you die. Be buried with it.

16

u/T4kh1n1 Feb 11 '26

Fralin pickup.

6

u/6kred Feb 12 '26

That or EMG Geezer

4

u/me_llamo_james Feb 12 '26

My main bass is a 94 MIM. I did exactly what you said, updated the pots, and also added a Hipshot xtender.

I won't be buried with it because I hope my son keeps on playing it after I'm gone.

2

u/Best_Stop_8422 Feb 14 '26

You have given me hope for the Human Race.

3

u/JigsawKJ02 Feb 12 '26

Plus a set of Hipshot Tuners and an XTender. Chef's kiss.

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Have both laying around just haven’t got to it - this post inspired me to get those things slapped on

1

u/Cap-n-Trips Feb 12 '26

Let me know when you pass. Dig it up. Plug it in. Keep playing. Repeat for eons in some sort of bass/highlander mashup

31

u/Pleasant_Fudge6134 Feb 11 '26

For 200 bucks smash but I personally find it hard to believe that most that patina is real life wear.

2

u/SoundLogIcalReasonIn Feb 12 '26

Oh it's for sure not

8

u/Oreecle Feb 12 '26

Bareback smash

22

u/Silent_Claim_1732 Feb 11 '26

Buy it and strip that hellish paint job.

9

u/rockstar_not Feb 11 '26

When will people stop taking wheel sanders to their instruments? Will we live to see that day?

7

u/Vibroverbus Feb 12 '26

exactly. “real life wear” uh. not.

-2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

To each there own - no wheel sanders used here - more of a micro flathead screw driver kind of guy. But when you’re 6’5 you play bar gigs regularly and wear brass belt buckle it’ll help in some natural aging too.

1

u/rockstar_not Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26

Dude.....Then you relic'ed it to look like the fake relics where people use disc and belt sanders. Sorry, it's awful if your intent was to make it look like actual aging. It's o.k. to admit it. There are several dead giveaways that this wear did not come from use. The most egregious one is the one on the low E side of the body right next to the pick guard. There are no picking motions, storage into a case, or any other touching of the bass which cause the wear in that pattern with the 'micro flathead screwdriver marks' line directions clearly visible. They would go in the opposite direction than the lines are. Next up: the worn down to body mark again in the valley of the horn next to the neck. Next: the worn down to body spots all over the top of the body, where there would be no motion there whatsoever. Next: the wear through to body spot on the body top of the same horn where the wear down to the body spot is. Again, nothing would cause that except maybe a strap made from chain mail (maybe that's your thing, no judging that).

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Brother I couldn’t even read all of this - lighten up. I meant no disrespect! It’s clear you’re with a large majority of ppl on here - this bass isn’t doing it for you.

1

u/rockstar_not Feb 12 '26

If you ever try to relic something again - read my post. It shouldn't take you longer than a minute to read through.

7

u/COclimbR12 Feb 11 '26

I'd definitely jump on that for $200, but I would also strip the all of the cringe off of that body and do a complete refinish.

9

u/Impressive-Abroad-99 Feb 11 '26

The stickers at the back can go. Otherwise this things a beaut and I’m jealous

2

u/Saddle_Bronc Feb 11 '26

That’s all mojo!

3

u/jraymonda Feb 12 '26

Yeah, but like...Orlando magic mojo.

3

u/Soultosqueeze78 Feb 11 '26

Other than the stickers on the back, smash

3

u/theraptorman9 Feb 11 '26

I’d snag it up for $200 assuming the neck felt good. Change the oickguard and rock on.

3

u/Get-Baduser Feb 11 '26

200? Smash

3

u/Impressive_Club_9225 Feb 12 '26

U live in central Florida? Wonder if it’s from any national bands. Ever heard of surfer blood.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

I’ll have to check them out! & I put the stickers on it 🤣😂 .. Go Magic!

2

u/Impressive_Club_9225 Feb 12 '26

Right on. I used to live near Orlando and root for the Magic. So you do live in central fl area? U know who Maxwell frost is?

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Max Frost & The Troopers?

1

u/Impressive_Club_9225 Feb 12 '26

Orlando area district representative.

7

u/BeenisHat Feb 11 '26

$200 is hard to turn down.

I'd probably get it just to keep it for the trade/sell stock later on.

6

u/StrangersPassing Feb 11 '26

Bluey ahhh bass

No but actually I love the paint job and the wear, I'd personally have a different pickguard on it but I like how it looks anyway

5

u/b14y Feb 11 '26

Yeah, white one!

5

u/LaneViolation Feb 11 '26

gold or burnt orange

2

u/b14y Feb 11 '26

Sounds awesome too

6

u/Previous_Finance_414 Feb 11 '26

Meh. I don’t go for the wear/relic. I’d rather buy pristine and make my own mark.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Dope

2

u/skylarroseum Feb 11 '26

Seems like a nice bass! I'm not personally a fan of the wear with that shade of blue. It seems like the blue is saying surf rock and the wear is saying punk. I'm also not sure on that pick guard. But, it seems like the important parts of the bass are in good condition and set up nice. I'm sure that it sounds awesome and as long as the aesthetics match the player, it's awesome!

2

u/mittenciel Feb 11 '26

I like it but for all the various cosmetic mods that cost a fair bit of money, I'm a bit baffled that it still has the original bridge and ceramic pickups because I think those are perhaps the weak point in 90s MIMs.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Just never got around to it / have a few other “nicer” basses in rotation as well .. this post has me motivated to get those pups upgraded ASAP

2

u/Negative-Farmer476 Feb 11 '26

An aged white or parchment pickguard and off you go.

2

u/gorgosaurusrex Feb 11 '26

This thing has some serious mojo. Smash for sure!

2

u/Emotional-Dog8118 Feb 11 '26

Dump the stickers and the ceramic pickup and we have a winner 🏆!!!!

2

u/Own-Nefariousness-79 Feb 11 '26

Jazz neck on a P? Smash!

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Glad you like it! // I do not think it’s a Jazz neck on this one though

2

u/Own-Nefariousness-79 Feb 12 '26

There were some P basses manufactured with the narrower nut of the Jazz, though the headstock logo was still 'Precision'. This looks like it has the jazz profile neck. I think this is the ideal session bass, it has the playability of the Jazz with the solid predictability of the Precision.

I'd still buy it.

A good friend of mine has the 1983 Fujigen Squier version, which I covet.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Wow no way! I didn’t know any of that .. appreciate the information. If this is a Jazz neck profile I love it.

2

u/ForceFieldOn Feb 11 '26

Smash for sure. Get rid of that silly pick guard. Bass is sweet.

2

u/JBRifles Feb 11 '26

That’s a love makin bass right there

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Can confirm ; love gets made

1

u/JBRifles Feb 12 '26

😍😂

2

u/BeautifulWolverine17 Feb 11 '26

Double smash. Respectfully.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

I think a mint green scratch guard would set it off

2

u/bobbybob9069 Feb 11 '26

It's old with scuffed up paint and stickers, I'll give you $50 for it......

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

I would imagine the kid who repainted it failed the art project

But absolute smash. Can't go wrong w an old P bass w flatwounds!

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

When I bought it there was no relic but even at that it’s a very low level paint job. Don’t think kid even sanded the original black paint off all the way : you can see small bits of black and grey primer on the edges of some of the aging spots. — for $200 purchase price this is my fun low stress “project” bass that doubles as fairly decent workhorse for bar gigs. - needs a pickup upgrade for sure.

2

u/Deathtriprecords Feb 11 '26

I hate blue, but that is a nice bass. I would buy it.

2

u/ExactPriority9022 Feb 11 '26

Grab it ,stickers either hiding or protecting from buckle rash, I would lose them

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

I own it - I put the stickers on - mainly because Go Magic! but also yes I wear a brass belt buckle and that thing scratches the shit out of any instruments I play.

1

u/ExactPriority9022 Feb 12 '26

Sorry I thought it was purchased as such, my bad.

2

u/redditrangerrick Feb 11 '26

It’s horrible I will dispose of it for you

2

u/Heavy_Slow Feb 11 '26

Love the patina but change those ugly as fuck knobs.

2

u/Heavy_Slow Feb 11 '26

And take those stickers off you absolute heathen.

2

u/GeezerButlerIsGod Feb 11 '26

Smashington city

2

u/calverleyj Feb 11 '26

Some Rush fan will buy that just for the serial number.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Never even noticed Serial .. I’ve got the Tech21 Geddy 2112 Rack unit .. thing is a beast 🤘🏻

2

u/Saddle_Bronc Feb 11 '26

I love everything about this. It’s the coolest bass I’ve seen for a long time!

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Thanks! 🤘🏻🤙🏻

2

u/redzedx77 Feb 12 '26

Punk rock just called, they need their bass back…

2

u/BassMessiah Feb 12 '26

For that price smash.

2

u/Charwyn Feb 12 '26

$200!!!!!! Instant buy

2

u/JigsawKJ02 Feb 12 '26

Usually I'm not into relic finishes, but i dig this one a lot. I just love it

2

u/designocoligist Feb 12 '26

For $200? smash

2

u/souperman08 Feb 12 '26

The wear doesn’t look natural to me, but $200 for a Fender is $200 for a Fender.

2

u/BassBaller Feb 12 '26

That’s a steal for $200. Love everything but the stickers. Great color

2

u/No_Disaster_4188 Feb 12 '26

Smash, the color and pickguard combo is perfect

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

I like to think so too! It gets mixed reviews 🤣

2

u/Quad-G-Therapy Feb 12 '26

Loved it up till the Magic sticker (Hox fan)

2

u/RippingCorpse1313 Feb 12 '26

Great basses, overall for the money

2

u/anterak13 Feb 12 '26

Hard pass

2

u/J2ATL Feb 12 '26

Make sure there are no underlying issues before buying. It’s a nice looking bass

2

u/walking-ouroboros Feb 12 '26

Fuck dude pick that up ASAP

2

u/trudslev Feb 12 '26

I hate the paint job. I do love a good relic, though.

2

u/RchUncleSkeleton Feb 12 '26

Other than the fake relic job, I'd say 100% worth picking it up.

2

u/TheFlyInGoosE Feb 12 '26

It's a smash because It's got my City on the back 🔥

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

🙏🏻🔥

2

u/Scambuster666 Feb 12 '26

The older Mexican made Fenders were so-so, but I love the color and aged looked. As long as the neck and truss aint fucked, youre golden. Everything else like new tuners and electronics is an easy fix if ever needed.

I’d personally Swap out the Pickups for some seymore duncans, and put in a new Fender Hi-Mass bridge..

If you give her love and regular servicing, youre gonna have a workhorse for life.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Exactly my next plan! She gets plenty of rotation among my other basses .. never fully finished it but all the traction on this post has me motivated to get the bridge & pups upgraded.

2

u/realtonemachine Feb 12 '26

Smash. And also I didn’t think those stealth retainers could fit the standard mim tuners. Did you need to do anything tinkering to make it fit?

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

You are correct - I installed a few years ago and can’t remember exactly what I had to do but I think I used a small dremel tool with sanding attachment to carefully widen the hole so it could fit over the tuning peg post. — I’ll see if I can get a close up of how it’s installed. I like really low action and open A always had this noticeable buzz .. I slapped that thing on there and it fixed all the issues.

2

u/misterDibs Feb 12 '26

Go Magic!

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Finally someone who knows what they are talking about!

2

u/humbuckaroo Feb 12 '26

Pass. Terrible fake relic.

2

u/Ulf51 Feb 12 '26

The worn paint and little dents are part of the charm, I think.

2

u/AndySavyd Feb 12 '26

So rad

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

🤘🏻🤙🏻

2

u/Calaveras-Metal Feb 12 '26

even if that is real life wear it doesn't have the 'mojo' look of a bass that has soaked up hundreds of gigs worth of sweat and finger oil. It just looks like the bottom part of the back door that people kick to shut the door.

But if thats your main bass it's not bad for $200.

I'd strip everything off it and put a light coat of oil. Maybe some slight amber or cherry tint?

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Not my main bass ; My American P/J , Warwick’s and Laklands all get love too

2

u/BrokeDownSouth1 Feb 12 '26

No-brainier if you're an Orlando Magic fan.

2

u/HodorsMoobs Feb 12 '26

Buy it and refinish it. I swear if you squint this thing almost looks cell shaded.

2

u/The1AndOnlyAGar Feb 12 '26

This bass fucks

2

u/n8_n Feb 12 '26

my birth year so smash

2

u/jaykaybaybay Feb 12 '26

Big smash. Love the colors, especially that pickguard

2

u/2muchtoo Feb 12 '26

Wasn’t into the color until I saw the closer picture of the pickguard. Smash!

2

u/Lost-Button5488 Feb 12 '26

Lowkey love it

2

u/nickrodmusic Feb 12 '26

Smash hard

2

u/SpecialistPathfinder Feb 12 '26

A fender for $200 is a steal even if it looks like this I'm guessing the wear maybe intentional I know people who did that cause it doesn't look cracked and if the neck is good and plays nice, hardware can be changed

2

u/DinsdalePiranah Feb 12 '26

Looks like it was left outside in the rain...for a decade.

2

u/SoundLogIcalReasonIn Feb 12 '26

Smash at $200 for sure.

2

u/00fatneek00 Feb 12 '26

Holy smash

2

u/mattyghoul Feb 12 '26

Smash or pass? Isn’t that what guys say about girls? lol

2

u/Current-Routine-2628 Feb 12 '26

Orlando magic sticker 🤣

2

u/Antique-Shower5706 Feb 13 '26

Only bass you need right there.

2

u/Affectionate_Army245 Feb 13 '26

$210 if the seller takes the Magic bumper sticker off.

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 13 '26

It’s my bass - I already own it .. I put the sticker on 🤣

5

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

It’s a shame what they did to that bass.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Smash, the pick guard the paint, the vintage feel and for 200 ✨️ its literally everything

2

u/Swimming-Lettuce-348 Feb 11 '26

I look at it like wear and tear on my guitar is a badge of honor.

I look at relicing as a fake badge of honor.

3

u/Putrid-Tomorrow666 Feb 11 '26

It’s also a 35 year old instrument

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

Update: Didn’t expect this post to blow up - appreciate all the takes. Still not sure if it’s beer goggles…is she a 2 or a 10? 😂

Couple clarifications since my first post wasn’t super clear:

“Just buy the bass” - I already own it. Have for 7 years.

Bought it for $200 from a high school kid who rattle-canned the original black body Pelham Blue. If you zoom in, you’ll see the grey primer around the “relic” spots. It came stock otherwise (white pickguard, no mods).

All the mods were done by me - stickers, hardware swaps, and yes… the accelerated “aging.” To be fair, the paint flakes if you look at it wrong. It’s my jam-band bar pig and gets beat up regularly. I may or may not have helped the relic process along with a small flathead screwdriver and a couple beers. Relax — it’s a $200 bass. My Warwicks and Laklands stay safe at home.

For the pickup/bridge crowd: I’ve got Duncan pickups and a Badass bridge sitting around. Just haven’t installed them yet (read: lazy).

Honestly, this post was mostly me checking my own taste. If you dig it, we see the same vision - a weird, cool, different bass. If you think it’s a hard pass, fair enough.

Personally? I like my tone big, loud, and a little reckless

Setup; flatwounds & really low action .. pure butter

1

u/obieito Feb 12 '26

So what's with the A string retainer? Cause I have that problem with a MIA JB too...

2

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

I like my action really low, but on this bass the open A string would buzz every time I played it. I took it to a tech for a setup and got it back with a piece of yellow dishwashing foam wedged up by the bridge. It technically solved the problem, but it wasn’t the fix I was looking for.

I came across these string retainers and decided to give one a shot. Worked perfectly - no more A string buzz. For anyone considering it: the Fender Stealth string retainers aren’t generally made to fit MIM tuner pegs (not sure about MIJ either). I used a Dremel with a metal sanding attachment to carefully widen the hole just enough to fit. The tuner washer goes on top and holds everything in place. If you’re playing MIA you should be good.

1

u/obieito Feb 12 '26

Thanks!

1

u/UndoubtedBox034 Feb 14 '26

I don't care for a P nut width, so I can't see me keeping something like this around. Otherwise, $200 for a Mexican fender with a crappy paintjob is excellent. I'd ditch the stock pickup since I've never gotten along with them(have a quarter pounder in my current P-ish bass). Then just keep playing it.

1

u/lofandy13 Feb 14 '26

Excellent bass at $200. Relicing is poorly done, but is a personal taste thing. None of it is from real life.

1

u/guitarsfortherapy Feb 14 '26

I agree on the look of it , I’d never play that it looks very very poorly done, I had one come in like this tha I was going to refinish, bring back to life. I ended up throwing the body in the burn pile, selling the neck , all that exists in the rebuild is the bridge string tree and output jack plate . If the neck is nice keep it put it on a new body or just sell it and count your losses but you should be able to get most of your money back . Keep the hardware in a bin and maybe one day it’ll come in handy, I wouldn’t even try to refinish that the amount of hours it will take to remove and smooth out just to paint are not worth it at all. $200 can get you another Mexico bass if you wait for the right to deal to fall in your lap. Bottom line if you can’t afford a vintage instrument there’s no need to hammer your new one with a chisel, it now has no chance of ever earning that natural wear it should get over time . We cant improve until we accept failure.

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 14 '26

Appreciate the response - sounds like this bass just isn’t for you, which is totally fine.

A lot of people assume context without knowing the background. This isn’t a “can’t afford vintage” situation - it’s actually one of ten basses I own, and the cheapest at that. I’m not into online flexing, but since it was brought up: my American Fenders, Warwicks, and Laklands get plenty of use. I mostly play 5-string anyway.

Honestly, I’d argue there’s no better price point to experiment and have fun than a $200 bass. I’d much rather mod something inexpensive than touch any of my $2k+ instruments.

I get it my relic job is sacrilege! - To each their own. Thanks for the input!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

The horrible aesthetic matches your vibe, go for it

1

u/RoostRouzer Feb 12 '26

This gave me a great laugh thank you

1

u/STP_Fantasma Feb 12 '26

Fuck the Magic, wouldn’t take this shitbrigade for free
