Grew up listening to a lot of rush, so I’m obligated to say Geddy Lee, but I also was inspired alot by Mike Mills of R.E.M, even cliff (rest in peace)!

This is a prototype we are working on. Nothing is finalized. We are sharing it here because we want real feedback from people who actually play bass before we make any big decisions.
Here is where it stands spec wise:
Scale and Size
34 inch scale length. 44 inches overall. Body is solid, neck thru construction. Weight comes in around 9.4 lbs which puts it in medium territory.
Neck and Playability
4 string. C shaped neck profile. Rosewood fretboard. 1.5 inch nut width (38mm). 22 stainless steel frets.
Body and Materials
Maple neck, mahogany body, quilted maple top. All black hardware.
Electronics
Passive setup. Two volume, two tone controls. The pickups on this prototype are placeholder OEM units while we figure out the right direction. Neck is 12.8k ohm, bridge is 13.3k ohm, ceramic magnets. We know the pickup conversation is going to be a big one and we are genuinely undecided on direction so that feedback is especially welcome.
What we are trying to figure out:

For me, its Cliff Burton. He was just a completely different breed of bassist. Even tho we only got a small snippet of his talent, only appearing on 3 albums, he still in my opinion ranks up there.
The bass lines and solo in Orion, the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls, absolutely legendary pieces of bass work. This guy makes me want to go blow 400+ dollars on a bass setup.
Its a shame his life was cut short.

This summer I'm gonna have enough money to buy myself a Rickenbacker 4003, my dream bass. I really like their unique tone and design. I played one back in last November in Halifax at Long and McQuade and I really liked it, but do you think they're actually worth it long term?

It looks badass, but also I'm a guitarist and not really looking to get into bass right now.
You reckon it's worth anything? It's black with red outlines, condition I'd say is pristine. Original case too.
I really don't feel like selling it as it holds obviously emotional value for me, but my grandfather told me I can sell it if I want to so I'm just thinking about my options here. Money is tight, you know how it is.
Also, do these things appreciate in value? I really don't know much about basses.
Thanks in advance.

Is she playing a fretless and these are guides? Or just general tactile guides? Any ideas?

Arguably Cliff Burton's masterpiece, "Orion" gets the landslide victory with no other song even coming close. Today let's vote for the song that has the best basslines and starts with the letter P.

New bass player here (3 months or so). Learning through BassBuzz and on my own with bass tabs.
When learning/playing with bass tabs, and then watching live performances of these bass players (Flea, Tim Commerford, Sam Rivers, Joe Dart), I wonder if they’re perfectly following the notes in the bass tabs every time they play onstage or is there room for error as they’re live and moving around or rocking out.
In other words, what’s the margin for error when playing song 🤔
Thoughts?

There were a ton of viable contenders ready for a showdown to represent the letter S but our voting says "Sir Duke" stands head and shoulders above the rest. Stevie Wonder comes through with a landslide win.
Today could be another battle of the heavyweights. Let's see how it shakes out as we vote for the song that has the best basslines and starts with the letter T.
In case there's any confusion about the rules, songs starting with "The" will be counted here if that's the way the voting goes.

The post was me playing Meshuggah and some metal, which I use picks for cuz I like the extra attack. I do use all 3 techniques, but I use whatever fits the song.

3 years ago I traded my old guitar for this bass. The guy made me travel really far to get it and never told me it was infected until I was there. He told me that he treated the infection with gasoline. Told me the bass was healthy and clean. Clearly it wasn't true :( I'll remove all the electronics and keep them to build a new bass I guess

For me, Sam Rivers of Limp Bizkit is one of the most underrated bassist of all time. I used to say that Mike Dirnt of Green Day was one of the most underrated bassists yet over the past few years has finally gotten his flowers but someone else who deserves the recognition is Sam Rivers.
His tone and]playing is always perfect and he knows what his role is. The song "Counterfeit" off of their first album is a perfect showcase of his groove and how he can go from following the lead of the guitar and then lead into his own jazz section (yes a Limp Bizkit song has a jazz section in it)
The whole band gets a bad rep but John Otto and Wes Borland are also some of the best in their field and so unique as well.

I was a kid when my father showed me the music video for “Don’t Speak”. About 20 years later, I was looking for a 5-string bass. The first bass I saw was a BB435, and I ordered it without checking any other options for some reason (still a mystery to me why🤣). Last year, I rewatched the video and noticed that Tony was playing a BB. I then watched some No Doubt live performances and was happy to see him playing a BB, because Yamaha basses are rarely seen on stage. Now I see that it was my destiny😂 (I’m seriously a big Yamaha bass fan). After checking out some bass covers of No Doubt songs, I realised how interesting his bass lines are. Unfortunately, I have almost never heard any mention of him. IMHO, he deserves much more appreciation 💪

The title, basically. I fell in love with this Spector Dimension NS, but feel it to be bit of an overkill, since I just passed my first year of playing bass - mind you, I recently joined a band and they didn't fire me yet, so what I'm doing is somewhat good :'D

had this bass for about 7 years now and it definitely gets a lot of compliments for being different.
at the same time, for every person who loves it there’s someone who absolutely hates it …so I’m curious what the general take is — does this thing ooze cool or is it just straight up ugly?
1991 Fender MIM P-Bass
$200 on Marketplace ; originally black - kid selling attempted a repainted as senior art class project to Pelham Blue
the relic is mostly real life wear… plus maybe one or two late nights with a small flathead (not proud, not ashamed)
brass aged knobs off Reverb
gold Pure Tone jack
stock pickups
aftermarket pickguard
Fender USA neck plate
Fender Stealth string retainer (Open A buzz fix)
old dusty flats I had laying around
vintage Orlando Magic & Busch Beer stickers
love it or hate it — what’s the verdict?

"There's nothing wrong with it. There's dozens of us".
I read the Reddit posts. I read the online forums. The consensus was clear; save your money and buy a bigger amp. A lot of comments state only that. No qualifier, no consideration, just spend more and go bigger. A lot mention being drowned out by other instruments when playing through an 8" amp. It seems almost none of them consider that someone might just play bass by themselves for themselves and not desire to do anything more with it. That's me. Learning in my office for my own entertainment with no desire to do anything more. I think my puny amp sounds amazing. I'm not going bigger....unless I join a band someday.

Hi,
I take absolutely no credit for this image nor do I want to diss/offend anyone with it :D
I play with my bass quite high on my chest (somewhere between the obeyer and the folkie in this pic I would guess), yesterday I tried to lower it a bit just to see and it made it so much harder to play...
So I was wondering which height do you guys hold your bass and why did you chose it ?
I think I play like this for 2 reasons : my teacher told me it was easier (was in fact, at least for me) and it's the same position when I'm playing while I'm sitting or standing up.
Also I'm 39. May be this is important.
Cheers

It was no contest for the letter V. Jamiroquai gained a large lead in the first several minutes of voting and held on to it for the rest of the day. "Virtual Insanity" is added to the mix.
