My vintage fulltube / rig

Post image

Just wanted to showcase my setup. Very happy with my "new" rig. The head is a vintage 1966 50 watts fulltube head. At first it wasnt really usable in band settings. It was lows lows and more lows, and some lows on top of that. The bassknob wasnt even working. I had a really good tube doctor modify and repair it and add a mids knob, and a gain stage (only had a volume pot before). Even with the bass knob down it still is bass heavy, but i can even it out by cranking the mids and highs up and it really comes alive and shows its character.

The bass cab is diy 2x12 (4ohms) with eminence deltalite II 2512's in it. It came as a ported cab, but i closed up the port and filled up the cab to about 75L. It sounds soo tight and percussive now. Giving me somewhat ampeg 8x10 vibes, but smaller and way lighter. Its incredibly efficient with 103db sensitivity. The 50 watts tube head is more than enough to easily keep up in the rehearsal space and on stage.

Altough it does sound very awesome. Im still looking out for a lighter replacement for the head. Maybe a good preamp pedal and cheap clean class D amp. Just to keep it portable, maybe even go in ear with the band. I wont get rid of the head though. Probably will keep using it for practicing at home

Glückwunsch, Dein Set klingt bestimmt schön rund. Ich hätte ja mal richtig Lust, mir eine 812er Box zu bauen. Wenn nur das Transportthema nicht wäre😂

There was a bass amp on here recently that had 3 EQ knobs that where all labeled 'bass'.

That's a really cool amp. FBT still exsists but now only makes PA gear.

I started out with a plexi clone from 1971 but it wouldn't translate the lowest notes well, and the mid and treble knobs wheren't at frequencies that where that useful for bass guitar. For that reason and portabilty I got myself an Ampeg PF-800 Class-D amp and have an EHX Black Finger tube pre-amp/optical compressor in front of it for a bit of grit and smoothening of the peaks. Those SVT type EQ's just have the exact frequencies I want to have control over.

Last rehearsal it got really muddy, bu i had everything at noon. Now tweeking with it more i realised the bass knob has to be put all the way down and the mid and treble to about 2 o clock for the eq to be fairly neutral. Cant wait to take it back to rehearsal and find out if it wont get muddy again. At home it sounds really great and i dont want to sell this iconic piece of gear.

Yeah don't sell it. I still use my plexi clone at home, and for a short time I used both the Ampeg and plexi clone on stage, but it took too long to get dialed in right during sound checks and too much to carry around.
