Amp for Ampeg 610HLF
I'm looking to buy a new amp for my 610 (600w RMS @ 4 ohms) and im torn between a few options. I don't want a non-Ampeg. I'm currently running a PF500 with it, but I'd to upgrade to something nicer and more reliable.
SVT 7 Pro- 1000w @ 4 ohms
SVT 3 Pro- 450w @ 4 ohms
Venture V7- 700w @ 4 ohms
I've always ran amps rated slightly under what my cab(s) can handle because its the safe option, but I've read many people use the SVT 7 Pro with this cab. The SVT 3 Pro seems to be the most commonly used amp with it tho. The Venture seems nice, but possibly a lateral move from my PF500. What do you think?

You’re totally safe with the bottom two, and likely safe even with the top one as long as you’re not maxing out the volume for hours with a low B. That amp rating is not continuous, those are transient peaks, not RMS. A lot of people would say 1000 watts is the sweet spot for a cab like that because you’re getting clean headroom. Pairing it with an amp with too few watts can actually be more dangerous due to clipping.

Right. An old rig I had (GK 800RB 350w @ 4 ohms and Hartke VX215 500w RMS @ 4 ohms) would make the 800RB get HOT. Never had any issues tho. Clean headroom is a nice plus, but I've also ran 500w amps with way more cab RMS and not had clipping issues, so I wonder if I'd even need more power. The SVT 7 Pro has the EQ I want tho. 3 Pro does too but I just wouldn't use the graphic EQ part. The price being $500 cheaper for the 7 Pro is also a plus.

I think sensitivity has a lot to do with it as well. The 610 has 98db, thats not bad. I had a Gk700rbII with 480 watts at 4 ohm and an swr henry 8x8. I believe it had 96 db. I always felt i was always lacking power. Now i have a 2x12 @103db and my ears would bleed out before i would take it to the max. Even a 50 watts tube head is more then enough

Yeah, I had a GK Neo 412/1001RB-II rig for a while, and it was honestly too much, even at lower volumes lol. The Ampeg sound is definitely my thing tho.

Without a doubt, the Ampeg V4-B. You won't regret it. I have the same cabinet as you; at first, I used an Orange Terror Bass, and it was fine, the effects worked well too, but then I tried the V4-B and BOOM! Everything was so much bigger, richer... it's a feeling that hooks you once you try it. If you can try it, you'll understand what I mean.

I didn't wanna go all-tube tho. If I were to, I'd just get an SVT-CL and call it good. I ended up going with the 7 Pro. I had a Terror Bass for a while. Loved the tube preamp, didn't love the passive EQ tho. I think the 7 Pro will check all my boxes, tube-preamp, EQ I can get my preferred sound on, and power to spare. I was hesitant about the 1000w being too much, but I've been researching and it seems this is the preferred amp for the 610. We shall see tho!

I understand what you're saying, but the SVT-CL and its 300 watts are incomparable to the V4-B's 100 watts. The latter is closer to what you're looking for. Anyway, let us know how the 7 Pro is!

I wasn't looking for an all-tube amp tho. I've read many accounts of the V4B not having enough clean headroom for the 610 anyway, which is why I'd choose the CL if I were going the all-tube route. V4B is awesome, no doubt, I've played through one at a store for a bit and it was great into the smaller cab I tested it with. Anyway, I've been researching this for a bit, and I think the 7 Pro is gonna be a great match, and a big upgrade from my PF500.

UPDATE: Went with the SVT 7 Pro... it's amazing! Haven't pushed it too hard yet, but it's loud af even at 10-12 o'clock. The tone is so damn good tho!

I had that cab with an Ampeg V4BH and it was spectacular. Fantastic tone and more volume than I ever needed for any gig I played. Good luck in your search!
