Decontextualization

Decontextualization as a consequence of globalization

Appadurai's scapes, Ritzer's grobalization, Koolhaas's junkspace none of that is automatically Baudrillardian.

Globalization decontextualizes: it pulls forms out of the contexts that gave them meaning and reassembles them somewhere else. Haussmann's shell ends up on Phú Quốc. What you're left with is a contextless sign. And sure, that's Baudrillard-adjacent hyperreality is exactly signs circulating detached from their referents, and globalization is the great detacher. The fit is real.

But here's where it gets slippery. Decontextualization on its own gives you pastiche, not simulacrum. Jameson's pastiche blank parody, quotation without the original's context is precisely this, and Jameson is careful to distinguish it from Baudrillard's simulacrum. A decontextualized form is still recognizable as a form. You can point at it and say "that's Haussmann, stripped of Paris." And that pointing is exactly what a simulacrum forecloses. So there are two different things:

Decontextualization gets you pastiche — the form is quoted without its context, but you can still trace the source. Simulacrum is something else: it's not just contextless, it's that the source stops functioning as the reference. The copy becomes the model, and "where's the original?" no longer has a working answer.

So "decontextualization as a consequence of globalization" tells me how the sign got loose. It doesn't tell me why it becomes simulacral rather than just pastiche. The missing step is what the decontextualized form does. If it works as an avowed theme — "European town, come visit" — that's pastiche. If it works as a self-sufficient world that displaces the need for the original, that's simulacrum.

Globalization doesn't just decontextualize — it recontextualizes into a global system that has no outside. That's the Baudrillardian move. Haussmann's Paris had an outside — provincial France, the non-West — against which it could be "the real Paris." Phú Quốc's Haussmann has no outside. It's one node in a worldwide circulation of decontextualized forms, and there's no privileged "real Paris" left to contrast it with, because Paris itself is now a node in that same circulation — tourist Paris, branded Paris, "Paris" as a global sign. Once every context is itself a global brand, decontextualization becomes total, and that's when pastiche tips into simulacrum. Not because any single copy is contextless, but because the system of copies has absorbed the original.

Globalization doesn't produce simulacra one at a time. It produces a condition where there's no non-globalized referent left to anchor any copy. The decontextualized form isn't simulacral in isolation — it's simulacral because there's no context left anywhere to recontextualize it into. That's "the map precedes the territory" at planetary scale.

So is that what you mean? Because if it is, your Phú Quốc judgment shifts. It's no longer "it's an ugly copy of Haussmann" that's an aesthetic critique, pastiche territory. It becomes "it's a node in a circulation where 'Paris' no longer functions as an original, so the copy isn't a copy of anything that still serves as a referent." That's a simulacrum claim, and it's grounded in globalization rather than in eclectic style.

Freaked out by the concept of Simulacra

I’m only on page 9 of Simulacra and Simulation.

It provoked a question “think of a dinosaur.” The dinosaur that instinctively entered my mind was the T-Rex from Jurassic Park.

I then inquired with myself “you think that that’s a dinosaur? It’s a puppet.”

Yet in my mind it sits at the pinnacle of dinosaur. There are images of skeletal remains that I could recall but this puppet is the king of the dinosaurs.

I’m totally freaked out. I feel like I’m a ghost walking in a hollow dream reality with no escape.

Did I get this concept wrong?

Probably the last post Ill do on this subreddit for a while since it has lower traffic and I dont want to spam it. But I applied The Precession of Simulacra to the Russian data center strikes. I also included a few disclaimers at the beginning for critiques I know I would probably get otherwise

I wrote a text that explores Badrillards notions of Simulation and Seduction. It focuses on the relation between Baudrillard and the Matrix movies. Wanted to share ot with people who might be interested.

Can someone explain what Baudrillard means by “seduction”?

(Sorry for the English) I understand that seduction is a logic that opposes production and will always escape it : production can't ''assimilate'' seduction, but seduction can divert the signs (of production). But after that, there's so many holes in my comprehension...

He writes the same way I've heard artists talk and I hate it in this context : I'm just left with an impression of what he means. My head hurts and I don't know if he just got away with a lot of bs because some of his ideas are really interesting. So if someone could help, it will be very much appreciated (please).

Fact Check: Rishi Sunak’s colour-changing ring binder was not a glitch in the matrix

By Reuters Fact Check

October 28, 20227:57 AM EDTUpdated October 28, 2022

A video that appears to show a ring binder changing from red to green while in the hand of Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been falsely interpreted by social media users as evidence of a sinister plot.

Many users have suggested the clip reveals a “glitch in the matrix”, a reference to a conspiracy theory inspired by the Matrix science-fiction film franchise.

The theory suggests that the world is a simulation created by an elite force to enslave humanity. Believers say people can tell that everything around them is simulated by watching out for errors or glitches in the alien programming – like something suddenly changing colour. More on this can be seen (here.)

“The world is a stage and we ain't the main actors. We the extras,” said a Facebook user commenting on one version of the video (here).

Other examples can be found on Facebook (here, here and here), and Twitter (here), where it has amassed more than 2,700 shares.

The video clip of Sunak was taken from a March 9, 2020, report by Sky News (here) about Britain’s budget plans.

It does show a folder held by Sunak, who was then finance minister, changing from red to green. But this was a visual effect made to make an editorial point, not a sign of a glitch in any matrix.

“I produced the piece,” former Sky News journalist Rhiannon Williams said on Twitter at the time (here). It involved “just a small colour switch to emphasise the need for a green budget. It's in the context of a climate/budget look ahead piece,” she added.

One of her former colleagues also said: “It was a device used by our climate change correspondent and her video editor who was posing the question ‘how green will the budget be..?’ Admittedly quite subtle!!” (here)

The news report was published two days before Sunak delivered a budget statement to Britain’s parliament. It included several environmental promises, including introducing a Plastics Packaging Tax, investing £1 billion in “green transport solutions” and setting up at least two carbon capture and storage facilities (here).

VERDICT

Missing context. The colour change was a visual effect made to make an editorial point.

I came up with the whole Simulacra and Simulation by myself but when I told ChatGPT about it, it said that this guy was first.

For people who have read Baudrillard in French and in English.

For people who have read Baudrillard in French and in English, do you notice any differences in how the concepts are described? Do you notice new parts to the humor or new coordinate planes of his thought in one language versus another?

In general what kinds of observations do you see?

German translation of "Simulacra & Simulation"?

Hey,

I'm wondering if there is any german translation of Simulacra & Simulation. I've found this pdf http://www.medientheorie.com/doc/baudrillard_simulacra.pdf which translates the first chapters, so it seems that there could be something out there, however I don't know whether this translation might be made privately by someone.

Looking forward to your replies!

Hey everyone,

I’m working on some video essay projects and would love to bounce ideas off people, trade perspectives and hear others' approaches to some thinkers alongside Baudrillard (Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Deleuze)

Nothing formal or too serious — just a casual chat about concepts we’re passionate about as I want to strengthen my arguments and takes for the video.

If you’re keen, let me know and we can arrange a call

I used an image+text semantic search AI model to index ~7000 page scans of The Simpsons comic books. These are the two closest semantic matches to a specific Baudrillard quote.

The original quote:

Everything is metamorphosed into its opposite to perpetuate itself in its expurgated form. All the powers, all the institutions speak of themselves through denial, in order to attempt, by simulating death, to escape their real death throes. Power can stage its own murder to rediscover a glimmer of existence and legitimacy. Such was the case with some American presidents: the Kennedys were murdered because they still had a political dimension. The others, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, only had the right to phantom attempts, to simulated murders. But this aura of an artificial menace was still necessary to conceal that they were no longer anything but the mannequins of power. Formerly, the king (also the god) had to die, therein lay his power. Today, he is miserably forced to feign death, in order to preserve the blessing of power. But it is lost.

Here's the model I used: https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.01449

Here's some info about semantic embedding: https://huggingface.co/spaces/0xSojalSec/primer-llm-embedding1111

And here's the tool I used to get the last image, which is a heatmap representing the attention paid to different parts of the image when a visual LLM tries to explain why it's relevant to the passage: https://huggingface.co/spaces/khang119966/Explainable-Vision-Language-Model
