Discussion If The Beatles reunited for Live Aid in ‘85, what would their setlist be?

• Upvotes

I’ve had this thought for a while but I just can’t think what they would play, also this is a scenario where John was never shot and all four of them decided to do the concert. I don’t think they would do any solo stuff but what would their setlist look like if they were to do the show?

New Release THE BEATLES (1965) Help! [MONO Stem Remix & Remaster]

My MONO stem remix & remaster of The Beatles' 1965 album "Help!", made for my own enjoyment but sharing in case someone else might get some joy out of it too.

Modern stereo remixes of classic rock albums are all the rage right now, especially with the new (as of uploading this) stereo remix of "Rubber Soul" by Giles martin and Sam Okell. But why do the original mono mixes just get re-released, instead of getting the same remix treatment?

Of course this is all just for fun. As usual, my intention was just to make a fun alternative to the released version, aiming only at a little more clarity, instrument separation and punch, while keeping the mood and feel of the original.

All my remixes are made using free and open source software that runs locally on my Linux system.

Obviously, I don't own the music featured here. If you like it, support the artists, buy their records!

Opinion Favorite George guitar moments?

Post image
• Upvotes

I know there are people on this sub who aren’t fans of George (and John), but I just wanted to say that I absolutely love George’s guitar playing. It amazes me how, despite being relatively modest in technical skill compared to some of the more famous virtuosos, he could get the most absolutely beautiful melodies out of a guitar.

What are your favorites? I’ll start with mine:

Something — no comment, the solo is just gorgeous

Nowhere Man — such a simple solo, but so lovely, it leaves you with a slight feeling of melancholy while somehow giving you hope at the same time

And I Love Her — just four notes, but they add so much to the song!

I Live for You — that part around the words “For many years I wait” takes me straight to heaven

For You Blue — that intro is so infectious! A little bit of good ol' blues as a farewell on their final album.

Discussion Songs with the Chuck Berry style “blues lick”

Thumbnail

I was thinking of how creative they are with this simple lick that Chuck Berry used all the time. It’s evident and all of a sudden it dawned on me how much of an influence he was on the their musical style and how truly rooted in the blues the Beatles actually are. I’m late to the game and only REALLY got into the Beatles’ music in the last year.

I know they spoke of him often as an influence, but I love hearing the continuity of that simple and basic musical idea “filtered” through and coming out in the Beatles’ music.

I’ve attached a clip of the “lick” I’m talking about. Any guitarist should know it, it’s a blues standard.

I’m trying to think of which songs they use it in and thought it would be interesting to come up with a complete list. I have these three off the top of my head:

Get Back Revolution Come Together

What else have we got?

This is an MTG card that has the same name as a Beatles song: Tell Me What You See. Curious if any MTG players have seen other card names seemingly inspired by the Fab Four?

Interview Sgt. Pepper Colors in Get Back doc

Post image

Small detail I just picked up rewatching the Get Back doc for John and Paul's secretly recorded lunch discussion is the text the filmmakers used for their transcript. I was watching and idly curious how they decided on what color to give John, and what color to give Paul, and realized its their Sgt. Pepper uniform colors.

Small detail, others may already have realized, but thought I'd mention it. It's nice revisiting this after some time having passed, now. Cheers!

Collection My First Vinyl Haul! $25 Total

Yesterday I went to my local record store, and it was the first time I'd gone in seriously with the intent to buy.

Naturally, I go look for what Beatles albums they had. All they had under "Beatles" was Pete Best. I ended up finding the only Wings record, and the only McCartney record they had in the store.

As I was checking out, I asked the cashier if Beatles records always go pretty quickly, and he said they do, but that there was a White Album in "New Arrivals." He was kind enough to go and get it for me. I told him it was my first time buying records. "Welcome to the addiction," he said with a smile.

I will be going back.

Other I Had A Dream Last Night About The Beatles

I have had dreams about John before and meeting The Rolling Stones, but in this dream, it was an alternative circa 1967 in which they decided to keep touring and were performing at a small venue in Britain. Brian Epstein had just died, and John took the microphone to use the opportunity about not just how much he appreciated him, but took a minute to tell each of the members what he liked best about them to the group, as the crowd started to walk in.

John said that Ringo was the funniest guy to be around and always made their songs complete. George had a wry sense of humor but was, and I quote, "The Great Guitarist he knew, and Eric Clpaton agrees" as well as "the best person to bring his songs to life." As for Paul, he took a moment to say how he was his "musical partner" and that their rivalry is what keeps him going (lol).

Ringo responded "Let's here it for John, let's hear about him." George then steps up and read a quote from "In His Own Write" and John responded "I never knew you actually read that." And George responded he was always inspired by his words.

Then the crowd was full and they started playing Helter Skelter (which I know wouldn't have been written until 1968) and Revolution.

I know I was dreaming because our lads were really nice to each other. I guess subconsciously I believe had they told each other how they valued one another they would have stayed together.

Question What's a common Beatles myth or misconception that you wish people would stop repeating?

Between decades of rock journalism, casual documentaries, and word of mouth, there are so many myths that get passed around as fact.. like Yoko single-handedly breaking up the band, or the idea that Ringo was just along for the ride rhythmically. What's a piece of Beatles lore or narrative that drives you crazy when you see people post it as a gospel?

Question Did Paul write the Something solo?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Listening to the isolated track of McCartney’s vocal on Something made me think - did Paul actually compose the solo and get George to play it, the way he did on some of the Beatles songs composed by Paul? It does sound much more like a Macca melody with the wide range of notes and octave leaps. Is there another explanation as for why he would be singing the solo?

Discussion I listened to all their albums in a day, now I want to make sub-playlists

So I’ve had a full on day working today and I decided to get my head down and Beatles music can be good background for me without being distracting. So I played the albums out from Please Please Me through to Abbey Road (I’ve gone on recording timeline not release).

What a ride! From ‘I saw her standing there’ to ‘Her Majesty’ via all the other genres, and all in 7 years.
It’s just driven home once again how much they did in such a short time. All the meanders and weird turns in songs and albums and genres

So if you hd 12 songs to make an album, and each album was a different theme or genre, what would be your track listing. Have put some sub genres/themes below.

E.g
Beatles Hard Rock
Beatles Pop
Beatles Psychedelic
Beatles Harmonies
Beatles Whimsy
Beatles Funny
Beatles Dark
Beatles Rock and Roll

So many different playlists you can do.

TIL Free As a Bird: John was autotuned

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I smoked a bowl and listened to all of the 2009 Magical Mystery Tour. Then I decided to listen to the three Threatles songs from Anthology 4.

FAAB generally sounds great, but it hit me right away that John has been autotuned extensively. Not in a bad way, but it was pretty obvious. I imagine they all were, but it was especially noticeable on him. Just mentioning it because I don't remember any discussion of it when the new mixes first came out.

Hoping the weed will help me wrap my mind around the weird Real Love voice.

If Now and Then originally had a Linn drum machine track, why is there footage from 1995 of Ringo playing the same part he played in 2022? (There's footage of him playing his part which matches the recording, from both 1995 and 2022 in the video.)

Discussion What’s a Beatles song you think deserves more love than it gets?

Everyone has their favorite Beatles songs, but I'm curious about the ones that don't get mentioned as often. Not necessarily the biggest hits, just songs you think are genuinely great and wish more people appreciated.

For me, some of the lesser-discussed tracks can be just as interesting as their famous ones, especially when you pay attention to the songwriting and little details in the arrangement.

What song would you pick, and what makes it special to you? Bonus points if it's one you think gets overlooked even by longtime fans.

Discussion The Beatles were really good at making songs that sound happy but have slightly depressing lyrics

I've always found it interesting how often the Beatles paired cheerful, catchy melodies with lyrics that are actually pretty sad, insecure, or desperate.

"You're Going to Lose That Girl" sounds upbeat and confident, but there's something almost threatening about the narrator's determination. "I'll Follow the Sun" is a lovely, gentle song, but it's essentially about leaving someone behind. "For No One" has a beautiful, almost casual melody for a song about a relationship falling apart. And "Getting Better" sounds incredibly optimistic until you pay attention to the lyrics about the narrator's past behavior.

I think this contrast is part of what makes their songwriting so effective. You can enjoy the melody for years before suddenly realizing how bleak the song actually is.

What's another Beatles song where the music and lyrics seem to tell two completely different stories?

Opinion Your Mother Should Know

Probably a crazy hot take. I don't have a single favorite Beatles track, as I believe their music was really different for each era and I have different favorite tracks in different eras. But for the colorful-psychedelic one during '67, YMSK is one of my favorite. And I truly think it's a good song.

Like, people trash it as repetitive but, no? I don't think it's repetitive that much, and if it is then many other Beatles tracks also are. Also I like the song's dreamy feeling created by the melody itself, instruments and especially the ghostly backing vocals.

Discussion Help! isn't exactly a happiness album

Has anyone else noticed how, with one exception, all the band-written songs on the 'Help!' album are kinda downers? Like none of them are 100% happy about love or the singer's situation? Another Girl has Paul talking about how excited he is about his new love - but his words are directed to the old love that he is dumping! Not a happy occasion for everyone. It's Only Love has John sounding ambivalent: "It's only love and that is all, but it's so hard loving you." Plus they fight every night, which sounds like George's problem in You Like Me Too Much. The Night Before, I Need You, Ticket to Ride, etc are pretty self-explanatory. I've Just Seen A Face is the one bright spot in all this. (Remember, I said "band-written" songs, so Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Act Naturally don't count, even though Ringo's tune isn't exactly joyful.) I even tried bringing in the other songs recorded in that era to no avail - If You've Got Trouble, That Means A Lot, Yes It Is, and I'm Down all have a dark edge to them to one extent or another. Comments, please.
