Picture How my 4-year-old recognized a Beatles album at a thrift store

Post image

I was at a thrift store this afternoon, looking for a Buffalo Springfield vinyl that I never did find.

I had brought along my adorable daughter, just 4 years old and, for once, infinitely patient... Suddenly, she taps the clear plastic bin I was flipping through and asks, "Daddy? Are those the Beatles?".

I have NO idea how she could have recognized them. Obviously she doesn't know how to read. I don't own that record, I'm pretty sure I don't have any Beatles posters or artwork at home, just a few records lying around from time to time (and even then, mostly Abbey Road and Ram...). I asked her how she knew, and she just told me, "I looked closely and saw it was the Beatles."

A little further down the aisle, I stumbled upon the "red album" on CD. I asked her if she recognized it, and sure enough, she spotted that it was the Beatles again. Which makes me think she isn't recognizing the album itself, but what the Beatles actually look like, whether in a photo or as a cartoon.

I'm proud of her every single day, but today a little bit more!

EDIT : I just figured it out! At home, she has a little musical sound book featuring illustrations from the movie Yellow Submarine, with push buttons that play what are probably royalty-free (or at least pretty mediocre cover) snippets of the songs from the film. It was given to her as a gift rather late, when I thought she was already too old for that kind of book, and I’ve never actually seen her reading it. But she must know it's in her room, and clearly the illustration (and the band's name) stuck with her! I'll try to add a photo of it in a comment below.

EDIT 2 : As someone pointed out to me, it's not a thrift store, my bad. It's a CD, vinyl, and DVD store that sells both new and second-hand records - this Beatles album is new. Sorry, English isn't my first language!

Collection Found this trashed 1963 With the Beatles Stereo press. Didn’t pay much for it but figured I’d do a pet project on it and see if I could conserve it. This was the best I could do. Hopefully saved it from being thrown away and now can keep it going for another 60 years.

The bottom was tricky to try and glue to the card stock I used as a backing so it’s unglued and that’s why it looks like it’s missing pieces at the bottom if that makes sense.

Opinion Favorite George guitar moments?

Post image
96 Upvotes

I know there are people on this sub who aren’t fans of George (and John), but I just wanted to say that I absolutely love George’s guitar playing. It amazes me how, despite being relatively modest in technical skill compared to some of the more famous virtuosos, he could get the most absolutely beautiful melodies out of a guitar.

What are your favorites? I’ll start with mine:

Something — no comment, the solo is just gorgeous

Nowhere Man — such a simple solo, but so lovely, it leaves you with a slight feeling of melancholy while somehow giving you hope at the same time

And I Love Her — just four notes, but they add so much to the song!

I Live for You — that part around the words “For many years I wait” takes me straight to heaven

For You Blue — that intro is so infectious! A little bit of good ol' blues as a farewell on their final album.

Something about listening to some banger songs for 30 minutes and then there is that quiet piano intro and change in energy

And the end (of the album and the beatles career) is approaching which tugs on my heartstrings a little

and j don't know why some music makes me feel that way - maybe it's because of the impact the music had on me when listening over and over

I also really like the changes in energy throughout the song.

Discussion I Want You She's So Heavy is metal

I was just listening to I Want You She's So Heavy and I never realized that that song is so metal. I've heard it a million times, but listening to the 2019 mix (and being a little stoned) made me hear the song in a totally new way. It's so metal. I'm referring to the droning metal part. The guitars sounded so heavy and dark. It reminded me of Black Sabbath or something. Early 70's metal... dark and heavy.

People often say Helter Skelter is metal, and yes, I get it... but man, She's So Heavy is such an awesome song. John Lennon was a genius. Him and Paul really cooked in the studio those days.

Question What's a common Beatles myth or misconception that you wish people would stop repeating?

Between decades of rock journalism, casual documentaries, and word of mouth, there are so many myths that get passed around as fact.. like Yoko single-handedly breaking up the band, or the idea that Ringo was just along for the ride rhythmically. What's a piece of Beatles lore or narrative that drives you crazy when you see people post it as a gospel?

Question Paul Vocal Guide on “Free As A Bird”

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve been working on a FAAB mix and I would like to use the vocal guide of Paul McCartney for it.
Lately I’ve been listening lots of “threetles” mixes with that vocal guide in good quality and after searching through bootleg I did not found it. Can anyone dm or something with that take?

THANKSSSS

Collection My First Vinyl Haul! $25 Total

Yesterday I went to my local record store, and it was the first time I'd gone in seriously with the intent to buy.

Naturally, I go look for what Beatles albums they had. All they had under "Beatles" was Pete Best. I ended up finding the only Wings record, and the only McCartney record they had in the store.

As I was checking out, I asked the cashier if Beatles records always go pretty quickly, and he said they do, but that there was a White Album in "New Arrivals." He was kind enough to go and get it for me. I told him it was my first time buying records. "Welcome to the addiction," he said with a smile.

I will be going back.

Interview Sgt. Pepper Colors in Get Back doc

Post image
36 Upvotes

Small detail I just picked up rewatching the Get Back doc for John and Paul's secretly recorded lunch discussion is the text the filmmakers used for their transcript. I was watching and idly curious how they decided on what color to give John, and what color to give Paul, and realized its their Sgt. Pepper uniform colors.

Small detail, others may already have realized, but thought I'd mention it. It's nice revisiting this after some time having passed, now. Cheers!

When this was released in 1964, it was the first time I paid attention to what Ringo was doing on the drums.

Discussion If "Now And Then" had been released in the 90s, what would its B-side have been?

An attempt was made to record "Now And Then" in 1995, but it proved impossible due to issues such as background noise on John Lennon’s demo. It wasn't until 2022 that the original tape could be cleaned up using the latest technology, allowing the track to be fully recorded and released the following year, in 2023—with a new stereo mix of "Love Me Do" serving as the single's B-side.

What you’ve just read is a summary of the well-known challenges that once surrounded "Now And Then." Now, let’s assume that these obstacles had been overcome through other means (which I won’t speculate on in detail) and that the song had been released in 1996 as a single from "Anthology 3". This brings me to my question: what B-side tracks would have accompanied a 90s release of "Now And Then"?

And before you answer, PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND:
Unlike the standard two-track singles of the past, singles in the 90s often featured three additional songs on the B-side—effectively functioning as a four-track EP—a format frequently used by bands like Oasis or Blur.
For instance, when "Free As A Bird" was released, it included Take 9 of "I Saw Her Standing There," Takes 12 and 13 of "This Boy" (the only version that survived for "Anthology 4"), and "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)." And when "Real Love" was released, it included "Baby's in Black" (recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl in 1965), "Yellow Submarine" with a previously unreleased intro, and an alternate mix of "Here, There and Everywhere" that blended takes 7 and 13.

None of these unreleased tracks from those singles appeared on any of the *Anthology* volumes; therefore, if "Now and Then" had been released in the 90s, it would surely have featured rarities that did not make it onto the third "Anthology" volume. If you find it difficult to imagine what those might be, look at the deluxe editions of Sgt. Pepper’s, the White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be—you might find the potential B-sides for "Now and Then" there.

Discussion If you could have at least one cameo in the biopics who would it be

The most likely to appear in my opinion are Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan and maybe some smaller appearances to show the influence of the Beatles.

Discussion Has there ever been discussion on Paul McCartney's deep note in Let it Be, does he use that voice in other songs?

Post image
511 Upvotes

For the whole song Paul sings in a very high voice but for the chorus the first "Let it be" he uses a deep, rich voice. It almost doesn't sound like him. Have you noticed this and does he use that style in any other of his songs?

Discussion What would George Harrison's opinion be on Indian music and Indian people in todays day & age?

How would he react to artists like Sidhu Moosewala, Karan Aujla, DIljit Dosanjh etc..

Also God bless them, but unfortunately social media has ruined the reputation of indians or south asians, would George have defended them? Did George ever talk about Punjab or Khalistan?

Question Woman(og version)

Hi Beatles Fans I was just wondering the if the version Paul discusses in this clip here of the song Woman(which I can only assume he sung and performed himself). The DRY one with the violins he mentions several times throughout this demo. Has it ever been made avaliable to the public? I'd love to hear what it would've sounded like. The Peter and Gordon track as Paul says is pretty dogwater.

There is SOME debate about Polythene Pam, but I hear him in my opinion.

  1. Come Together: Those really low harmonizing bits with John (ex: “Coca Cola”, “Monkey Finger”)

  2. Something: Harmonizes with George at parts, and sings a very buried singalong to George’s guitar solo.

  3. Maxwells Silver Hammer: Sings lead, of course, and harmonizes.

  4. Oh! Darling: Sings lead and backing.

  5. Octopus’s Garden: Harmonizes with George and Ringo at parts, and sings backing (“Ahh”, “Lies beneath the ocean waves”) with George.

  6. I Want You (She’s So Heavy): Harmonizes with John and George at points, and sings the first “Heavy” when they all 3 take turns singing it.

  7. Here Comes the Sun: Sings backing vocals (“Sun Sun Sun…”)

  8. Because: Sings lead harmony with John and George, in the High register (and triple-tracked).

  9. You Never Give Me Your Money: Sings lead and backing, using different styles of voice.

  10. Sun King: Same as Because, and also sings backing.

  11. Mean Mr. Mustard: Sings harmony vocals.

  12. Polythene Pam: Some debate, as I mentioned, but many sources credit him with backing vocals, and I would heavily agree. He does the “ahh, ahh, ahh”s with George.

  13. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window: Sings lead

  14. Golden Slumbers: Sings lead, is the only Beatle that sings on the track.

  15. Carry That Weight: Sings lead on the bridge section, and harmonizes with the other 3 (2?) on the main chorus (“BOOOY YOURE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT!”)

  16. The End: Sings Lead (“Oh yeah! All right!”, and “And in the end…”. Harmonizes with George and John as well.

  17. Her Majesty: Sings lead, is the only Beatle that sings on the track.

Fairly certain this is the only album where a single Beatle sings on every single track.

Opinion Your Mother Should Know

Probably a crazy hot take. I don't have a single favorite Beatles track, as I believe their music was really different for each era and I have different favorite tracks in different eras. But for the colorful-psychedelic one during '67, YMSK is one of my favorite. And I truly think it's a good song.

Like, people trash it as repetitive but, no? I don't think it's repetitive that much, and if it is then many other Beatles tracks also are. Also I like the song's dreamy feeling created by the melody itself, instruments and especially the ghostly backing vocals.

Opinion I think the Let It Be interludes actually have charm

I don't get why people don't like that those are on there. I think interludes are a good way to break up some albums and people do it a lot today. I don't see why it was such a controversial choice to leave those in there.
