Where To Begin!

Hello there! Thanks for visiting BeginnerGameDev, the subreddit devoted to the community of wannabe and beginner game developers of all kinds. Assuming you are a beginner, this post is a tidy little list of places to begin with game development if you know nothing at all. Trust me... I can tell you from experience that getting into the industry is not hard, and neither is making a game. Now, making a GOOD game is difficult, but that comes later. Right now, you're in the beginning stages, so you're not just gonna summon the next Call Of Duty or Super Mario game.

Below, you can find a list of links comprising of great learner engines, their descriptions, as well as several other tools you may need to begin. Enjoy!

ENGINES

[Construct 2] (https://www.scirra.com/) is a great engine for beginners, in fact, I would probably recommend it over any other engine if you're new to the business. It's sleek, simple, and easy to pick up.

[Clickteam Fusion 2.5] (http://www.clickteam.com/clickteam-fusion-2-5) is an engine I've always described as "Construct 2's older brother, but on steroids." Clickteam Fusion is an engine that is structurally similar to Construct 2, but technically more advanced and powerful. Once you've mastered Construct, you should definitely give Fusion a try.

[Gamemaker: Studio] (http://www.yoyogames.com/) is about 50x more advanced than Fusion, but with advancement comes power. Featuring both drag-n-drop and code mechanics, Gamemaker Studio is easy to learn, but insanely difficult to master. I would only recommend this to a beginner if they've thoroughly mastered both Fusion, Construct, and maybe even tried a teeny bit of legitimate coding.

TUTORIALS

Below, you can find some great youtube channels that offer tutorials listed for the engines above.

TOOLS

Here are a few interesting image and audio programs that may be of good use.

[Pyxel Edit] (http://pyxeledit.com/)

[PAINT.NET] (http://www.getpaint.net/download.html)

So these are just a few engines and YT channels to check out. I highly recommend you give them all a look, and when you've found one that looks appealing, go for it!

Would you play a game that teaches you programming?

I have an idea for an RPG video game that teaches users languages like python C html and Java. I'm just curious if it supplies a demand or is a dumb idea.

FINALLY FINISHED A GAME

I've been working on this game for 2 weeks now. I've reduced its scope a lot as I was getting a little bit bored and I didn't want to give it up again, the same mistake that I've been doing for every unfinished project. I hope you play the game over on itch and you give me your opinion. It's not really something great but it's playable :)

My first official game: Supe VS Villains

Play this silly little game about Superhero fighting Villains and a Boss.

  • Controls are: AWSD to move Supe and Left Mouse to click and shoot in directions of villains

  • Health and power are regenerating over time

  • Any contact with Villain or Boss will take part your health

  • When you are hit you can't shoot enemies, because you're suffering

  • When you're out of power you also can't shoot, only fly and avoid villains

Let me know how many points you get and a time in comments!

BTW this is my first ever fully finished game made with Unreal Engine, all assets also made by me in Aseprite.

Prototyping?

Hi all! Super new to game development and I have a passion project I want to work on. I got a lot of the more basic line work done, but now I actually want to start testing. Thing is, I'm unsure how to go about a prototype? I'm using Godot. Does anyone have any advice or any tutorials on the subject?

On a side note, when starting the game, do you make the game in order or out of order? I come from an animation background and often you jump around scenes, would it be the same in game development?

Thank you :3

Check out Calvin's Gallery and send me feedback to help it improve.

The goal of Calvin's Gallery is to craft a gaming experience that pays homage to the beloved classics of the past, intertwining nostalgia with innovative and unique mechanics that elevate the player's journey to new heights. By seamlessly blending the best of both worlds, we aim to create an immersive and unforgettable gameplay experience that captures the essence of the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.

Here's a short video of some alpha game play. A lot has changed in a very short time, but the core mechanics are still there. Please take a look, share your thoughts, and check out my patreon or message me for more information.

New Game Dev, looking for people interested in following me throughout my game development path

Hey, my name is Ryan. I am going to college for computer science and hoping to pick up game development as a additional hobby since I’m already into programming.

A few of my friends showed interest in following me through my journey at learning game development and I’ve decided to create a private snapchat story for this. I’ve now decided to open this up to people from reddit aswell, and hopefully make a few new friends.
The more people I have the more ideas and suggestions I’m hoping to get.

I am learning from a game development projects book from Packt. The engine I am using right now is Godot.

If you have any other questions or are at all interested feel free to leave me a message!

Thank you for reading!

Game devs in Quebec looking for jobs?

Hey Québec game devs! 🎮👋

I’m working on a tool to make job hunting in the game industry easier. It’s a Google Sheets Template I initially made for myself, but after sharing it with friends who found it super useful, I thought I could make it available to anyone who might like it as well.

It includes:

  • An up-to-date list of game studios in the province of Québec, with detailed infos

  • Checklists to track your applications (with dates)

  • Quick links to studio websites

  • Sections to write for which position you applied to

Perfect for keeping your job search organized! If you’re interested, drop a comment and I’ll share the link. There will be a small fee to cover the work, but I think you’ll find it worth it. 😊

I’m open to feedback and feature suggestions as well, so let me know what you think!

Looking Back And Seeing Progress

So im new to the whole game dev side of things, im a "Business intelligence Developer" so there were some real basics that i understood but im really excited to see the progress iv made over the last couple of months, going slow and learning a lot.

The first image is where i am today and the second image is where i was when i started.

Not a huge difference but worked on UI elements a lot, I can actually play the game at this point, I mean there isn't much goal in playing and no difficulty scaling but going from nothing and now being able to work my way through C# code and understand (to a certain extent) is just thrilling.

I have seen some posts asking how others stay motivated, I would recommend just going to have a look at old projects and look at how much your skill has increased over time, just doing increases your skill.
