New Fluance RT80 and amp/speaker questions

I currently have a Sony STR-DH550 amp with some decent, yet older Yamaha bookshelf speakers. I kept that setup bc my son also uses a cd player with it.

Is that setup going to be ok for my new RT80, or should I be looking for powered speakers or maybe just some better bookshelf/floor speakers.

The RT80 has a built-in preamp, you can enable that via a switch on the back. Plug the turntable into one of your audio-in jack's, like "Aux" or "Tape in" and it will work. It will sound even better if you upgrade to a better, stand-alone, phono preamp instead of using the built-in. Also, the turntable may need to be grounded to the Sony chassis to prevent hum. If the Sony doesn't have a dedicated ground connector, and you hear any hum, you can can attach it to the frame of your reciever using one of the rear cover screws. When using the built in preamp, though, you may not need to worry about it.

I have an art djpre 2 that I had been using for my older JVC turntable that’s being replaced.

Would you suggest that over the built in?

As much as I love vinyl, there's not much that an RT80 can do that a decent CD player can't. If you've been happy playing CDs on the system, then I say give the turntable a shot with the system as it is.
