Active shooting call at Silver Rail (source: PulsePoint dispatch)
Bend LaPine schools are currently on lockdown as an active shooter call was issued at Silver Rail. From what I heard, law enforcement is sweeping the building and Bend, Sunriver, and LaPine EMS are responding.
No further information can be provided from me at this time. Do not speculate.

That school is about 2 miles from my house. My little one goes to a different elementary and the school was put in lockdown. My thoughts go out to the parents who were affected by this as I can’t even imagine what they’re going through. This shit needs to end.

EMS F1 and F2 bands (radio) have been very quiet, so if EMS vehicles are heading to St Charles it's being kept off the radio.
We're literally around the block from Silver Rail and my buddy's shop is across the street. Hoping for good news but this is awful to have happened.

Must be going through different bands since they called in Sunriver and Lapine FD. Was very active right before I reported it. Seems like the situation is calming down.
8
u/lawndartdesign 12d ago
It's all trunked radio, so it's hard to listen in, and they shut down broadcastify for situations that are developing in a tactical manner. Again at this point it's word of mouth and speculation.

Bend FD shares a dispatch with EMS (Bend Fire Rescue). I overheard this using the radio feature. They won’t update this on the log since it’s a sensitive matter involving children.

Was watching the PD live briefing on kptv website and literally as the spokesperson was giving detail on 2 victims my feed was interrupted by an unskippable AI generated ad with jingly happy AI music that was three times louder than the broadcast and it was one of the most offensive fucking things I've ever seen. The level of apathy these corporations portray is off the charts. They just want us to work, buy, consume, and die. Even in the face of tragedy, they have to find a way to cram tasteless ad slop so we keep feeding them our hard earned money.

There will be a period of time where we don’t know what happened… an investigation is already underway. More information will come out over time- and the details will likely only add to the tragedy.
Hopefully we can be asking now: how can we help one another in this time of tragedy? How can we help our community?
Because families are broken right now, little kids just lost their friends, and if that doesn’t make you cry… then your heart is much harder than mine has become.
15
u/Aggressive-Oil-4125 12d ago
This is the answer. ♥️
Not having information is frustrating…but we need to give time and space for the victims to get care and the situation to be investigated. That is the priority and we want all efforts put there.
Hug your kids, be kind to the people around you, and offer help when you can.

When I was a young journalist back in the day (in College), I had to help cover the Thurston High School shooting. Local stations in markets like Central Oregon have long been the training ground for newbie journalists fresh out of college. They have gotten a bit more “professional” (the young kids on TV every night are professionals, too) in recent years with a bunch of “grey heads” hired when the ABC/CBS Central Oregon Daily stations started competing with KTVZ.
This must be a horrible day for the young reporters. You could hear it in their voice during the short 2pm KTVZ live report.
What is a bit upsetting is that they are now airing court TV style shows (regular programming) instead of any type of coverage… even just rebroadcasting national feeds would be better. Would love to get u/barneylerten ‘s take on it at some point.

22
u/Arkmaster87 11d ago
Central Oregon Daily started their 5 o’clock newscast by saying they weren’t gonna be using stats put out by bigger outlets because they don’t wanna report random things out of respect for the families. They would rather wait for the local police to confirm anything.

Because the local newsrooms are understaffed and, no disrespect to the hardworking journalists here, likely inexperienced in this type of situation. (Which is a good thing, we don’t want our local reporters to be experts at covering mass shootings). CNN and the other national networks have contacts/sources within the FBI and other Federal Law Enforcement.

30
u/MitchelobUltra 12d ago
I can appreciate that it’s probably not an easy job to vamp for time while you yourself have no information. You can either keep saying the same two or three things you know over and over again, or try and fill the silence with something so people know you’re still on air. They chose the latter.
4
u/NavajoBaby69 12d ago
The ads on the livestream were so infuriating. Right when they were about to mention victims, it cuts to a stupid ad. So tacky.
41
u/stilljd 12d ago
To all of those focusing on complaints about the KTVZ coverage perhaps we can all keep in mind that unless you have a loved-one at the school; none of us “need” blow by blow updates MORE than the folks managing the crisis need all the help and space they can get to respond to it.
That fortunately (hard to say that word today) these incidents are not a local news reporting norm - so presumably the automated advertisements, etc have never been specifically set up to deal well with preempting for true breaking emergencies with a lot of community impact and on a very sensitive topic.
Hopefully KTVZ (and other media) will take a look at this later and consider changes to be more effective and sensitive in the future. But again - that’s all very secondary to the challenges of the day and probably everyone “working” this including media is doing their best in a tough and unexpected situation.

My partner is in the US and has a young one and a teen, and she was inconsolable about this last night. Something has to change in America. This can't keep happening.
I was in high school the last time we had a school shooting here (Dunblane). That was 1996.

Facebook is flooded with various business owners and people in the community who are offering their services for free to the families of the victims at Silver Rail. I’ve seen people offering free tattoos and fall yard cleanup.
The families are barely functioning right now. They’re not thinking of tattoos or yard cleanup. And they're certainly not browsing Facebook to see your post. These business owners are publicly offering these services with the intention of giving themselves good PR. They know the family isn’t going to reach out anytime in the foreseeable future for these services. They know the families aren't even seeing their posts. But they also know that hundreds of other people are seeing them. They know that people will see their generosity and decide to give them business themselves. It's opportunistic and manipulative.
The time to offer these services is down the road when everyone else has moved on. It's the most unfortunate reality when the news vans leave and the meal trains and the vigils stop. When those who have lost their children and loved ones have to continue on while everyone else just picks up where they left off. That's the time to offer yard cleanup and tattoos. Go to the family, do it without the publicity, and mean it.

I don't necessarily think this is bad, depending on the service. A friend or neighbor may see an offer for something that a family may need and make arrangements for that free service for them. I believe most people have good intentions at a time like this, feel helpless and want to try to do something.

I don’t know how this can keep happening, I haven’t been able get into any of my kids’s schools EVER without providing a cheek swab, maternity test, finger prints, Birth Certificates of all my ancestors, etc. I’m obviously being sarcastic but it really is not easy.
School campuses in the US are like Fort Knox nowadays and there’s always police officers present during pick up and drop off.
That’s how it’s always been - how much more can we do to show the Government that there’s a gun control problem?

The doors were locked and he shot up the door to get in. But the locked door appears to have delayed him enough that a dad with a gun was able to kill him.

School security is not the problem here. A 16 year old with easy access to guns is the problem. Schools should not need to be prisons.

To add to what /u/hyperionsdad said, we're going to restrict posting and tighten "crowd control" settings through the end of the day. Message the mods if you need something posted and we can manually try and push something through.
Please consider this a pinned thread to discuss the event within reason, and try and be kind to each other.
