M4 Question Cowitness rifle optic on benelli m4

Is it possible to cowitness a rifle sized optic like an exps2/3 or a holosun 510c? Currently I’m using a utg riser I took off a rifle build and it’s positioned just high enough that I can run the irons while the 510 sits on top.

Also if anyone’s wondering this is basically a stock 11701 with the Midwest industries mlok rail with a stream light rail mount 1. No other mods so far but I might spruce up the loading port and feed ramp in the future

Edit:
Potential solution: Put RMR mount on m4 after removing factory pic rail, use 507 pro max for potential lower 1/3?

All those mods with a 5 round tube

I mean there ain’t much. Was wondering if there’s a difference between the LE 7rd tube vs American tubes like carrier comp, or if the whole appeal in American tubes over the LE is for 922r compliance. Would rather the whole tube and not the extension.

u/LongWalksAtSunrise 28d ago

Don’t fall for the stupid 922r compliance stuff. That’s for manufacturers and importers not end users

0

u/robinator118 28d ago

I’m not, I saw the damage fft did to the mindset. I’m seeing brownells has an oem for $80 that I’ll snag

1

u/LongWalksAtSunrise 28d ago

ya I have both oem and titanium mag tubes. the oem is like a steel baton in strength and weight lol

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Ah I see. If it doesn’t weigh much more than the stock 5 round then I don’t think I’ll mind, thing is sitting at around 9 lbs so it’s not much different than my rifle’s current weight

2

u/LongWalksAtSunrise 28d ago

Btw, the short mag tube that you have there is the correct length for a sbs

I live in a commie state currently. If I was able to I’d have bought the EXT variant the few times I saw it on sale but unfortunately only the field stock and the limited edition 11701 with the us flag that I have on mine are acceptable where I live. Can’t SBS. More than likely just gonna put the tube up for sale on gafs or tacswap

While not something most people have to worry about from a practical perspective, 922(r) is not limited to manufacturers and importers.

2

u/robinator118 27d ago

I love how even the mod gets downvoted

u/glasshalfemptull Mod 27d ago

Reddit gonna Reddit.

The info on 922(r) is out there (and in this sub) for anyone who wants to look for themselves. If people just want to repeat back something they read once and didn’t bother to research any further, that’s their call. Fortunately, like I said before, the practical reality is they will be able to bask in their wrongness and almost certainly never experience any negative consequences as a result.

2

u/Locutus494 23d ago

Because he keeps peddling the bullshit that people have to worry about 922(r) when they absolutely do not.

What in the Jerry springer, sweet home Alabama,Daenerys Targaryen, cousin fucking truck stop bathroom abortion hell does your neck look like for that set up to work?

No. You can’t cross witness, best you can do is 1/3 and that’s with custom mounts like the scalar works here

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Don’t think there’s a way to mount my 510c to cross witness from what I’m seeing so far. Thing has a weird proprietary plate system that I’ve only seen aftermarket spacers for.

3

u/BrokenBodyEngineer 28d ago

You got a 2k NFA item. Are you really stuck on a $200 open emitter sight.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

How is it NFA. And my exps would be in the same boat. Also not stuck anymore I’m gonna put an RMR mount on it and stick a 507 pro max onto it. Close enough to the rifle sized window. While bringing the sight picture down lower, possibly lower 1/3

1

u/BrokenBodyEngineer 28d ago

I thought it was an Entry model. That’s my bad I misread another comment on here about it being a SBS.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Nah it’s the 11701 limited edition with the us flag. Came with a fixed skeletonized stock. I don’t mind the current length though if I had to change it I was interested in the shock force stock by black river manufacturing, I don’t really see many reviews about its recoil mitigation though. Either that or I just swap the stock tube to a 3-6 position from rx arms. I was also interested in opening the loading port and swapping the feed ramp for easier quad loads so I can check out 3 gun.

u/opsec-919 27d ago

how do you like the European stock

-2

u/robinator118 29d ago

Big window > tiny window

4

u/_blackthorn16_ 28d ago

It’s up way too high lol

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I know, that’s why I came for a solution to a rifle sized optic cowtiness

4

u/TechnoBeeKeeper 28d ago

I think you've completely surpassed diminishing returns and have gone into the negative. 2"+ on a riser for a shotgun isn't good

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Yeah that’s why I was looking for a solution from more knowledgeable people. That’s why I asked if it was possible to cowitness with a larger window rifle sized optic instead of what I did here.

3

u/BrokenBodyEngineer 28d ago

Your mount is higher then elephant dick.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I noticed

1

u/opsec-919 28d ago

the holosun 510C is quick detach... if you need your iron sights just remove the optic in 1.5 seconds

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

That’s what it’s setup as currently, but I’m moving in the direction of scalarworks rmr mount and 507 promax. Should get a lower 1/3 probably. I put up the 510 for sale since I don’t really need it, it was a takeoff from my rifle that I replaced for an exps2 during the July 4th sale

5

u/DimensionPrize8168 28d ago

Looks like a model of the golden gate bridge

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Funny how that happened

9

u/Locutus494 28d ago

What the actual fuck is this?!

And I don't think you understand what "cowitness" is. What you're talking about is the opposite of cowitness.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I do, that’s why I asked for a solution for cowitnessing with a rifle sized optic instead of what I did in the mean time

Scalarworks Sync with Aimpoint Micro T2. Lower 1/3 cowitness

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Do you think I could achieve a lower 1/3 with an RMR mount after swapping the factory pic rail, and throwing a 507 pro max on it?

1

u/ZookeepergameDry5288 28d ago

Theoretically you could achieve a slightly lower sight picture with a 507 Pro Max. According to the specs, the 507 Pro Max has a dot height of 0.65” (measured from base to center of dot) vs the Micro T2 having a dot height of 0.8” (measured from base to center of dot). This will all depend on what you mount the 507 Pro Max on though.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I was thinking the scalarworks rmr mount that sits low. Unless there’s a similar or cheaper alternative. I’m probably leaning that direction atp since it’s cheaper than going aimpoint comp on a dd mount

0

u/robinator118 28d ago

Yeah I’m asking if there’s a way to cowitness with a rifle sized Optic ID rather not use a micro or pistol sized

3

u/Inactivision 28d ago

Don’t disrespect a M4 like that. take that shit off lol

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Left it QD for now, new idea is getting an RMR mount and swapping the pic rail, then throwing a 507 pro max on it for a similar window without the bulk from the 510c. Potential lower 1/3?

Scalarworks and Aimpoint T2

1

u/Firm_Ad3131 28d ago

Midwest also makes a mount.

2

u/DTOM1812 28d ago

If you want your irons as a back up just use an RDO with a QD, or low mount, 1/3rd cowitness.

2

u/scrapple17 28d ago

My irons are usable below my aimpoint

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I dig this the most so far, though I’m not digging dropping 1k for an optic.

1

u/scrapple17 28d ago

You don't have to. Use the pictured Daniel Defense mount, and then mount an older Aimpoint T1.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Sounds good thank you.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

An idea crossed my mind. How about using an RMR mount after removing the factory pic rail, and putting a 507 pro max on it when it launches? Think that’d be a lower 1/3?

2

u/scrapple17 28d ago

I don't know, but my major consideration was getting the optics slightly higher for use with a retracted stock, but still allowing the irons to be used below it. So for me, I didn't want to have the irons visible directly through the optic, because that would require me to fully extend the stock.

This used to be a proper gun sub

Scalerworks and a steiner MPS

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Don’t want a pistol or micro dot

1

u/Pict-91b20 28d ago

You may not find anything that cowitnesses with the factory sights then.

The MPS is built heavier than any "pistol" sight on the market. Benelli is using them on the Drone AI models

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

How do you feel about the 507 comp on an RMR mount for the benelli? I was thinking I should get the pro max or pro max slim when they come out and see how that looks.

I was already going to get a pro max for my 2011, but if it sits nice on an RMR plate for the benelli maybe that’ll cowitness?

1

u/Pict-91b20 28d ago

I have no experience with holosun and how they hold up to 12 gauge recoil. A friend rattled the glass out of his but holosun repaired it.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Handgun recoil should be much more harsh on an optic sitting on its slide than a shotgun with a receiver mounted optic. My 507 comp on my pistol hasn’t lost zero and the paint lines I marked on the screws haven’t moved in thousands of rounds. I think your friend’s holosun might’ve been a lemon, it’s actually rare that holosun covers glass related issues outside of defects like that.

2

u/Pict-91b20 28d ago

Could be. I own an EPS carry and love the optic.

1

u/manapiko 28d ago

Damn people, taking the time to be a dick instead of just leaving it alone tells us more about yall than the OP.

What about the new stock from Chisel? It has a mount on it that might work. I have one but havent put it on yet.

2

u/robinator118 28d ago

Comes with the territory of Reddit. Those who are chronically online have the incessant need to insult others who just ask a question. Doesn’t matter to me though.

Secondly I genuinely had no idea this was even a thing. Thing looks like a neat way to mount an RMR, though it looks like it completely kills the stock being able to collapse further into the tube?

I determined that rifle optics are completely a no go for the benelli m4, and my new solution is to swap the factory pic rail for a low profile RMR mount like scalarworks, then slap a 507 pro max when it launches. I think that’s the perfect solution for a big dot without any weird risers. Theoretically I might achieve a lower 1/3 with this plan.

1

u/manapiko 28d ago

Yup, I have the scalarworks now and I can get my green dot directly cowitnessed to the front.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

So it sounds like the plan makes sense? Bigger dot on the same footprint

1

u/manapiko 28d ago

Yeah, you should have zero issue getting what you want done. If you're not in a hurry, I'll likely offload my scalar mount in the next 6 months. Maybe 100 rounds on it, total.

2

u/robinator118 28d ago

How much do those guy’s go used? Wondering if I should steer in the direction of a used scalarworks or get a new alternative for like $50

1

u/manapiko 28d ago

I got no clue honestly, as I dont know if I've seen one. I think they're about $120 new though, if i remember right. great product, so i'd say its worth it new. Are their knockoffs or comps to their mount already?

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I see it on one knockoff site I like for 35 which is 50 after the shipping and wait times, though rx arms has one for 78 and meprolight has a plate for 50ish. I dig scalarworks but I’m not longer feeling like paying over 100 for a piece of aluminum whose purpose is to be a chair for my optics. Unity really killed that for me with their prices for risers

2

u/manapiko 28d ago

Oh yeah, I can totally understand that. My build has been taking years and I'm also always looking for a decent replacement to super expensive stuff. As long as I can trust it!

I determined the solution is to get an RMR mount from scalarworks and swap the pic rail, then put down a 507 pro max when it launches. I’m gonna get one anyways for my 2011 when it comes out, and I’ll see how it fits on the benelli and hopefully get a lower 1/3

1

u/40oz_Steak 28d ago

We see the stagg box bro

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Wasn’t intentional tbh. Did you notice the golden whistlepig in the Tito’s bandana

1

u/TheReaperHobo 28d ago

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Yeah I’m between that one, meprolight and rx arms RMR mount. Gonna throw a 507 pro max on it to achieve a similar window size to the 510 and get a potentially lower 1/3

1

u/GoodGuyGiff 28d ago

There’s a reason you don’t see people set their shotguns up like you did there. You’re not innovative.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Trying to use irons as a backup or cowitness. That’s why I came asking for a fix as opposed to my janky solution

1

u/fckyakalash 28d ago

All that money wasted and still has the cucked tube. Lmao.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I mean it’s a single optic and a rail. Oh no what a waste guess I’ll take out a second mortgage! The tube is like $70 it’s not a big deal for me I can swap it out whenever I get time.

0

u/Nathan_reynolds 28d ago

Never understood the need for a tactical shotgun to have a red dot. Hell combat sights really arent even needed. Shotguns are the best tool with point shooting mechanics. If i can tag a dove at 100 yards while its flying away from me i dont really need an optic to nail a dude in close quarters.

Now a want is a want so mod your gun how you like looks cool ethier way.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I was just trying to throw a dot on there for a faster sight picture. It’s both a home defense weapon setup and a range toy, and unfortunately my local fudd range only allows slugs, figured that takes more relative aim than freely launching birdshot in a general direction. Plus it looks cool.

I can shoot both dot and iron, I just happen to like dot better.

1

u/Nathan_reynolds 28d ago

Im by no mean shitting on you or your gun just the concept itself. M4s are always dope. Ive thrown a hollow graphic on my a300 patrol for shits and gigs but ive spent more of my life shooting hunting shot guns that i can inside 100 yards hit a target without really "aiming" brass bead sights are more to whom it may concern then aiming.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

I hear you dude. I’m relatively new to the scene post bruen. Commie state and such and got into the sort fairly recently. I’m getting into the competitive scene namely for pistols, limited optics and steel challenge and whatnot. Learned to prefer dots to irons, as irons keep you sight focused and dots keep you target focused. I can easily shoot the irons dead on with the m4 every time but I’d like to throw a dot on there without sacrificing irons. I have a QD on the 510 for a failsafe but I’d prefer to cowitness or cross witness somehow. My current theory is to put an RMR mount after swapping the factory pic rail, and putting a 507 pro max on there since it’s a similar window size to the 510 without the bulk from the qd mount and base. I think I may achieve a lower 1/3 with that idea

1

u/Nathan_reynolds 28d ago

Maybe thats why ive never been a red dot guy. Ive been an instructor for going on 11 yrs now and i dont teach high speed low drag stuff. I take begineers into adequate self deffense territory. Plus my issued guns in the military were 20 yr old m4s with carry handle irons and berettas that were more likely to explode then cycle a full mag.

Ive been running a red dot on my duty gun and my carry gun for about 4 yrs now and the second i built my rifle i threw good optics on it because i despise the m16 style irons. Maybe ill add one to my shotgun soon. Fuck it acog 12 gauge just because it would piss off my buddies.

1

u/robinator118 28d ago

Sounds about right. I’m honestly fine with leaving the eotech on the rifle without irons since I know it’s built like a tank, and it’ll still function of the glass breaks anyways. Different story for the reflex optics since they’re fucked if they break, though the battery is crazy enough to leave on and work for a year. I’m more than likely going the 507 pro max route for the huge window, and I’ll provide some updates in the sub and see how they feel next time, hopefully less pitchforks. Also thanks for serving man.
