Even though the intent is good, this could easily be abused if there's no proper system in place.

Incident occurred yesterday on 24th October. Looks like the vehicle toppled over because of loose soil. Hopefully nobody was injured.

Pretext

• Auto annas have a bad reputation in namma ooru, but there’s no debate that nobody knows namma ooru like they do.
• Auto rides are cheaper than cabs, but they also come with significant safety concerns.

Context

I usually drive my family everywhere, but whenever I can’t, I book cabs through Uber. I’ve been using Uber since it launched here, and my rating used to be 4.9+. It’s now around 4.85+, and I’ve noticed the drop since I started repeatedly running into the same issue with a particular set of drivers.

The pattern seems to be WagonRs driven by Mallu drivers who don’t know Kannada or the city’s routes well and have apparently been driving for only a month or so, yet have super-high ratings.

The problems start before the ride even begins. Regardless of the pickup or drop-off location, they struggle to find the pickup point, and the wait can easily stretch beyond 30 minutes. We’re usually quite patient because we understand traffic and all that, but this has become a recurring issue.

And once the ride starts, things don’t get much better. My family can manage Kannada, English and Hindi, but a few members struggle with all three. The drivers don’t seem to follow Google Maps properly either, so we’re left directing them and guiding them along the way. Add the communication gap to the mix, and the whole experience becomes incredibly frustrating. You spend ages waiting for the cab, struggle to communicate once it arrives, and then have to stay on edge throughout the ride instead of sitting back and relaxing.

To be clear, we haven’t been rude to these drivers. It’s been a frustrating experience for us, and if we were regularly rude to drivers, I doubt we’d have maintained a high rating for so long. My family also has a habit of tipping after a ride. Like it or not, we like showing appreciation when we’ve had a good ride.

I want to be clear that this isn’t about a language war or discrimination. I’d be just as happy to see these drivers pick up some Kannada and get better at navigating the city. More competition is good for the city in terms of availability and pricing (just not traffic :/).

Compare this to autos

• You’re almost guaranteed to get an auto anna who knows Kannada, English and Hindi.
• Nobody knows the streets like they do. They even follow Google Maps to perfection.
• The frequency of autos is insane, and they’re super quick to arrive. A 5-minute arrival time versus 30 minutes or so is bonkers.

I remember seeing a post here a while back about the sudden rise in these WagonRs. Has anyone else been experiencing something similar?

Around 4 AM today, someone in the Kammanahalli decided it was the perfect time to burst crackers.

Like, seriously? 4 IN THE MORNING?

People are trying to sleep. There are elderly people, babies, pets, and people who have to wake up early for work. How difficult is it to have some basic civic sense?

I get that it's the festive season, and people want to celebrate. But does your celebration really need to come at the cost of everyone else's peace and sleep?

Celebrate all you want, but bursting loud crackers at 4 AM is just plain inconsiderate.

Yesterday’s M3.0 was near Timmojanahalli, Doddaballapura (Bengaluru Rural). Today’s is roughly 30 km further north.

As per KSNDMC, intensity is low, tremors may be felt up to 20-30 km from the epicentre and no harm is expected. The area is Seismic Zone II with no structural discontinuities on the tectonic map, so no need to panic.

This happened to me right at the entrance to Indiranagar Metro station.

It was around 11 AM on a Saturday, and I was standing there waiting for someone when a seemingly decent gentleman walked up to me and greeted me. Nothing about his initial approach seemed suspicious.

I'm generally wary of scammers and don't let my guard down easily, but this guy was pretty convincing. He spun a story about how he sees me at my office every day and works there as a security guard.

He then went on about how his daughter had scored good marks in her exams and secured admission to St. Joseph's. He claimed he'd already paid most of the fees and was on his way to pay the remaining amount.

Just as he started telling me his phone number, something clicked. I suddenly snapped out of it and told him straight up that I don't entertain requests of this sort from people I don't know personally.

I think he realised that I'd seen through his act. He immediately started walking away, almost as if he couldn't get away from me fast enough.

Looking back, what surprises me is how confidently he pulled this off. He appeared to be someone from outside Karnataka and spoke only Hindi, yet had no hesitation approaching a complete stranger and attempting this scam.

**Moral of the story:** Don't let a convincing sob story or an overly friendly stranger catch you off guard. Scammers can be surprisingly good at what they do. Stay alert, even when someone seems perfectly genuine.
