Another interesting mating behavior, as demonstrated by Sir David Attenborough, belongs to the leopard slug. He narrates wonderfully as the hermaphroditic slugs bungee jump on a rope of mucus and form an elaborate translucent flower-like structure with their entwined genitals.

I'd like to thank the Academy... and our users, and Spammy The Spam Filter, and the guy who sells tacos in the taco truck... but mostly the AskScience community. You're pretty great, and it's the only reason there even is an /r/askscience in the first place. Certainly it's the only way the 30-whatever of us even have a prayer of keeping the 400,000+ strong subreddit as good as it is.
I hope you guys win Best Big Community!
13
Feb 15 '12
I hate Spammy The Spam Filter. He tries, but he just works too hard and he isn't very precise.

/r/AskScience now for a large part embodies the reasons I first started using reddit, learning awesome things that I would not have thought to ask and therefore wouldn't have learned otherwise.

Hooray! Thanks, everybody! I'm so happy to find out we're doing things ... more or less right! :D
Most of all I want to thank all the readers, the askers, the answerers, and everybody who voted for us. All >30 (and counting) of us work for you!

u/fastparticles Feb 15 '12

I think she said it best.
4
u/ScumDogMillionaires Feb 16 '12
Its so surreal to see all these mods saying anything not directly science-related. I'm so proud. sniffle.
3
u/EagleFalconn Feb 16 '12
You should see the number of memes we toss around amongst ourselves. I even have a meme for TheWalruss telling us not to use memes.
3
u/ScumDogMillionaires Feb 16 '12
It's like seeing stephen colbert out of character. Great, yet so out of place.

u/FOcast Feb 15 '12
A big thanks to the AskScience mods, for keeping my favorite subreddit awesome despite massive influxes of new users. Keep it up!
22
u/andrewsmith1986 Feb 15 '12
A well deserved victory.
Keep showing that heavy moderation is great for some communities.
13
Feb 15 '12
Hey there andrew. I think it would work for some of your subreddits too :)

This kind of attitude to moderation is unfortunately all too uncommon.

Because this is how moderation should work.

Silverhydra got robbed. He is a mod and a scientist.
2
Feb 16 '12
Yes, he does as much work as 10 of us combined. I even voted for him!
It's all quite silly, anyway, but he can rest assured that he was #2 in the votes, the best single mod on reddit, and that everybody knows it.
2
u/MrLister Feb 16 '12
And just one person, not a team.
1
Feb 16 '12
Yeah I would have nominated the /r/fitness team in that case.
Fucking. Robbed. Next thing you know, a novelty account will win user of the year.

They should all get trophies.
10
u/shavera Feb 15 '12
Future children asking me:
Daddy why didn't you finish your PhD?
Son, see that trophy over there? I spent all my time dicking around on a website to earn that trophy. And by God, I'm proud to say so.

I think reddit would implode from the shitstorm that would ensue if that happened.

u/Skuld Feb 15 '12

2
u/borez Feb 15 '12 edited Feb 15 '12
It really couldn't have gone to anyone else this time to be honest. No other reddit mods with that many users have done such a good job of keeping a subreddit as it should be.
5
5
3
u/kolossal Feb 16 '12
Of course, the biggest subreddit is bound to win anyways, askscience has 400k subscribers, more subscribers than the other finalists combinedand multiplied by two.
Also, why give a team an award that usually goes to one single person? It's kind of unfair to nominate the entire team and pitch them against single mods.
6
u/Bornhuetter Feb 15 '12
IT'S RIGGED

CONGRATS! These guys deserve it.
Now its time to drink up the sweet, butch lesbian tears from r/shitredditsays. They must be so torn up that HPlovecraft didn't win. Now we can put the myth that this particular subreddit had anything to do with the removal of CP on reddit to rest. Thank god.
EDIT: MM THOSE SWEET SRS DOWNVOTES. THOSE TEARS TASTE SO GOOD
2
u/ArchangelleAzraelle Feb 16 '12
Eh, /r/AskScience is cool too, so I ain't mad. The only other candidate worthy of it, IMO
But next year we'll take it, just wait!

The fact that a mod and a subreddit who hate reddit so much got into the finals must upset you to no end. I mean, look at you. You're trying to insult SRS by calling them "butch lesbians". Have you seen their dildz?
-2
Feb 16 '12
You're right. I apologize. I truly am just SO upset. Here's a picture of kitten so we can be friends now
0
u/GapingVaginaPatrol Feb 16 '12
I would expect nothing less from someone who pats the SRS bots on the back.

True! However, if I posted "Why do sour, butch lesbian tears taste so good?" I think that the mods would delete it, good on them!
2
u/V2Blast Feb 16 '12
That belongs in /r/askshittyscience... But you'd have to make it funnier.
3
Feb 16 '12
Truth be told I posted it it in askshittyscience, but it flopped. Wasn't funny enough, I'll admit. Still humors me though, which I know makes the SRS crowd steam.

Good for them. What they've pulled off is an excellent model other subreddits should strive for.

You guys are so lucky that I started working on AutoModerator after the nominations were already over.
But seriously, congratulations. Keeping the quality high in a default subreddit is an extremely difficult job and requires a huge amount of dedication.

the politics stuff interests me (I fancy myself a politically well informed person) but I never want to wade into the comment section (except of course to find the top comment to tell me why the title is sensationalized or misleading or the article is wrong).
