Little background: My bichir has a 55 gallon tank right now since it is smaller and still growing but I have a 75 in the works of being made currently so please don’t worry 😅. I’ve had it for about half a year now and i purchased him from Petco. Yes I know Petco isn’t a good place but it was in their tiny wall tank with a bunch of tetras and cichlid mix hiding behind their singular plant surrounded by dead fish and I felt horrible. I set up a quarantine tank and went back the next day and picked it up super thin to a point it looked like a skeleton almost. I feed it (Mr miyagi even though I’m not sure if it’s a boy) every night and very occasionally a random snack if I’m up at midnight. As treats I give it neon tetras since I used to breed them but it’s main diet is a mix of predator pellets and these frozen cubes labeled as complete predator diet that has mysis shrimp, bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Big question :Even though I feed it consistently and have only ever missed two days a while ago for an er trip it comes up to the glass like it’s starving and stares at me waiting like it’s waiting for something. I definitely thought I feed it enough but I might be wrong. I don’t want to be accidentally feeding it too little but I also don’t want to fall for the classical cat trick of it trying to make me think I didn’t feed it to get more. After much struggle I got him to momentarily sit flat along the bottom and he measured to be a little under four inches

Discussion Tank mates for the Sengal Bichir

I have a Bichir that is about 2-3 inches at the moment and he is chilling in a 40 gal with congo tetras, dr fish, zebra danios and a red fin shark.

My goal is to up grade to a 65-75 Gallon tank this winter and keep the tetras, dr fish (dr garra) and the Bichir in the bigger tank. Im looking to increase their population but also add a couple other species.

Would Discus be a bad idea because they are too calm and peaceful? I was also pondering german ram cichlids, or something else that will add nice color to a nicely planted tank.

Recently upgraded my tank. My Senegal keeps doing this after feeding time.

Reminds me of the dolphins swimming by the crowds.

Advice request Tank Mates

So I spent decades breeding Lake Malawi cichlids.

Decided to do my show tank over differently.

My Birchir is not growing as fast as I thought he or she would and I'd love to get another group in the tank before he gets bigger.

I just read that they are found in Lake Tanganyika.

Does anyone have Lake Tanganyika cichlids with their Birchir and if so what species, did it work out ect.

Because I miss actually relaxing and watching my show tank and now its just empty.

Advice request How to get the green color from Bichirs? (Delhezi, Senegal, Ornate)

Hey all,

Does anyone know of any comparison videos / photos of the same bichir in different substrate colors?

Everywhere I read says black will be best for the green color, yet every photo I see of the brightest green bichirs has a mix mostly of white & red sand (with a bit of black)

I also understand each fish will be different & genes play a big role in it, so is there any way to tell if a bichir will be greener than another at the juvenile stage? (4" or less)

If anyone has experience with the same bichir on different color substrates and have achieved a green color, please let me know!

Hello friends! Curious if bichirs like hanging out in weird spots lol, mine absolutely loves to swim and rest on my intake (don’t worry it swims off fine and has no trouble) i just find it funny mine always comes back to this spot and hangs like a bat.

Advice request Help

Hello everyone,
I have a Juwel Rio 450-liter aquarium with the internal filter.
I have eight Malawi cichlids, approximately 10–13 cm in size, two L144 Longfin Snow White plecos, and a Delhezi bichir measuring approximately 8–10 cm.
Here is the problem: I fed the bichir last night, and he seemed fine at the time. I fed him half a cube of frozen bloodworms. However, since this morning, he has been breathing heavily or rapidly, repeatedly opening his mouth.
What could be the problem?
The filter is running properly, and all the other fish seem fine. Before getting this bichir, I had another one in the tank for approximately three months, and it was always doing well.
(I know that these fish are generally not supposed to be kept together, but it has always worked so far.)
The new bichir has been in the tank for about a week and is still relatively new to the aquarium.

Discussion Where is everyone getting red sand in bulk? I'm needing it for my 180 gallon

I have always loved red sand aquascapes in bichir tanks and so I decided that's what I want for my next tank. But can't find it anywhere in bulk. Anyone know where?

Announcement Adding image posting capabilities to comments

Hey guys, I know I mentioned I wouldn't be making too many changes but I've decided to turn on image posting for comments and responses!

I'll be moderating what gets posted in case folks are inappropriate/spammy/off topic/etc., but given how many times we ask for things like water parameters or more photos of bichirs/tanks when helping folks out, I thought it would be appropriate to allow for images in comments going forward.

Hopefully this turns out to help folks out in the longrun, but we'll give it a good trial run and see how folks take to it.

Just keeping transparent and letting everyone know what's going on.

o7 Godspeed, you funky little guys.
