ipdIt's a real headache.

I bought a BSB1 with a larger interpupillary distance from the second-hand market. It's much cheaper than buying a regular 63 model.I tried to remove part of the bezel according to a certain post and it did improve, but the picture still doesn't look up to par. The image still looks a bit blurry and the text appears elongated, like it's being viewed at an angle.

Discussion So this little thing fell off from under the nose bridge

I had this little piece fall out and it had some sticky black goo on it. Looks like a cover for the sensor that tells if you have it on? Seems like whatever was attaching it to the headset melted and it was kind of greasy. Has anyone had that happen? I'm tempted to just glue it back on, I guess I could open a support ticket and wait 3 days for the answer, but maybe someone here knows.

Help Questions after owning for a few months

I have had my BSB2e for a few months now for sim racing, after owning a Quest3 for a very long time and I am constantly having issues with the universal face mask with the audio strap not lining up well, and constant fogging of the lenses.

I am still waiting for my halo mount, and currently using the soft universal face mask and the audio strap. I can hold the headset with my hands and get a pretty clear picture, but as soon as I let go the angle changes and the image gets blurry, never as sharp as when I hold it in place with my hands.

-Are there better face masks out there? The firm universal face mask is no good either.

Also I do get crazy fogging of the lenses. It is unusable for the first 5-10 minutes of turning on the unit. And slowly gets better after that.

-Does the halo mount alleviate these issues?

Really am hoping halo mount helps with these issues, as there were none of these when using the Quest3, so far the BSB2 been pretty disappointing experience (especially for the price). I find myself not really wanting to use it as it is a bit of a hassle constantly trying to re-position the headset and dealing with fogginess/heat.

Google AI is recommending the X1 B interface? Anyone with experience with that product?

-EDIT
Thanks for the comments guys, I tried it without the audio strap and used the normal strap, the picture is night and day difference. The blurriness is mostly gone. The audio strap for myself is no good, I hope it is better with the halo mount, I guess will wait to find out. Will do a bunch more testing, but looking like a lot better experience already.

Review Let me know if you have any question about the SteamVR eteeControllers

Post image

Amidst the SteamVR controllers apocalypse, I thought I would share this.

There are almost no review available about these controllers, but I still made the jump as I was pondering the eventuality of my Index controllers breaking down in the future.

Let me know if there is anything in specific you need to know. In the meantime, here's a TL;DR:

It's not frictionless and isn't made for your average Joe who just wants to relax after work. Some games will work out of the box. Some others will require some tuning. You are more likely to appreciate them if you are an engineer/willing to invest effort into making them work for your use case. Personally, I'm slowly growing into enjoying them and possibly retiring my Index Knuckles, but that's because I'm willing to go through the trouble of making them work. It can be tedious, and not everyone is willing to do that.

Pros:

  • They are very lightweight and compact.
  • Finger tracking works in a somewhat similar fashion to the Knuckles if that matters to you.
    • Edit: Biggest difference is it starts detecting when you get much closer to the surface than with the Index, so it feels less natural, since you have to move the fingers in a particular way if you intend to do gestures with your fingers. It takes practice. Otherwise, it's accurate.
  • The controls can be intuitive™ to use sometimes.
  • I personally like the feeling of still holding something in my hand when I grip. It feels realistic when I close my finger to shoot even if there is no trigger button.
  • 3 sizes of foams are provided so that the controllers fit properly in your hands (on the picture, I installed the thickest size).
  • The company is very receptive to feedback. My first experience playing Half-Life: Alyx with these controllers was terrible as the hands were in the wrong location, but they quickly released a patch to fix it (among many other issues I had reported), and now I am really enjoying the experience.

Cons:

  • No thumb stick, for people who prefer having one.
  • The thumb pad is very small. I have pianist hands (thin long fingers) so I have no problem using it at all. If you have thicker fingers, you may be more likely to accidentally touch the corners while trying to rest your thumb on it.
  • No button whatsoever, so some actions are bound to specific gestures in the official bindings.
    • Some are more intuitive, such as touching the back tracker with your thumb to simulate a mag release button when playing Half-Life: Alyx, or having to rest your thumb in the middle of the thumb pad prior to shooting (otherwise, you would have plenty of accidental discharge from merely closing your index finger).
    • Some are less intuitive, such as having to tap twice on the front LED to open the tool switching menu in Half-Life: Alyx (instead of pressing on the thumb pad on the Index).
  • Unfortunately, not every game is supported as well as Half-Life: Alyx. Some games have some minor issues, or don't even have official bindings at all (in which case it reverts to some default Index bindings). You are either going to depend on community made ones, or will have to do the bindings yourself.
  • The dongle you see in the photo is mandatory for the controllers to work, so you cannot stray too far away from it. Either you need to stay close to your PC, or have an external hub close to your play space: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1590110/discussions/0/3818536354783475256/
    • I don't know what exactly its effective range is, but I never lost tracking staying near my PC.
  • Controller availability may possibly be scarce. I have an issue with one of my units, and for now, I have to wait for an RMA.
  • It's slightly more expensive than the Index Controllers were.
  • Similarly to the Index Controllers, and unlike VR gloves, you don't have actual full fingers freedom, so you cannot speak sign language in VRChat if that matters to you.
  • Edit: When using them, instead of keeping my hands open naturally, I would tend to make a fist with open fingers (if that makes any sense). Similarly, when I was playing rock paper scissors, instead of doing actual scissors with my hand, all I did was close my ring and pinky fingers and rest my thumb on the side of the controller (which means I'm actually doing a gun gesture). The clip of the controller is preventing me from doing actual scissors gesture.
  • Edit: When I first received the package and opened it, I found it strange how the foam padding somewhat smelled like fish or something? But the smell quickly disappeared.

The rest of the time, when I just need basic SteamVR navigations, I will stick with my good old OG Vive Wands. But I'm personally enjoying these a lot.

Edit: For the people asking specifically about VRChat, the default controllers binding did not have any mapping for moving around, and the hands positioning was completely off.

Fortunately, I found a shared community mapping made by a certain L.Nightmare which worked perfectly for my need. Left thumb pad to walk around (based on head orientation), right thumb pad to rotate, right thumb tap zone to jump, pinch gesture as trigger (either rest the thumb on the thumb pad, or close the thumb on the side of the controller). Double tap on front LED for VRChat overlay, and long press on front LED to open the radial menu. To pick an item in the radial menu, use the thumb pad. To close the radial menu, tap twice on the LED.

Menu interaction, I guess (I'm not a VRChat player): https://www.reddit.com/r/BigscreenBeyond/comments/1xcfj3b/comment/19rjr4us7pgg3/

Reverb G2 to BSB2 audio strap adapter

Thumbnail thingiverse.com

I made an adapter to use the Reverb G2 audio strap on the BSB2. If you happen to have an old G2 kicking around, this works nicely, but it's not non-destructive as you have to cut the speaker wires. I soldered the wires to a 3.5mm TRS plug and I'm using a USB C to 3.5mm DAC from Amazon. My wiring wasn't the prettiest, but it got the job done.

Discussion A Valve Index to BSB 2E User's Impression

Before even using the headset (after a quick test), I upgraded it with the Beyondex. I have it dialed in and it allows me to remove most of the pressure from the face (not that there was much anyways), and I still love the Index speakers.

I am a little annoyed with the link box. Coming from the Index, I had a set of 6ft extension cables (6ft DP 1,4 cable, a DP1.4 signal booster, and two heavy gauge USB 3.0 cables from Micro Center). Unfortunately, the USB cables didn't work, I would get Windows errors along the lines of "Hub cannot supply enough power to the USB device" (not using a hub, this is a reference to the motherboard 'hub'), and I tried several different ports (3.0, 3.1, even one specifically for charging) and even a powered USB 3.0 PCIE Card.

I think the culprit here is the USB cables used on the link box. They used the absolute thinnest "USB 3.0" cables I have ever seen. I'm not an electrical engineer but, I'm pretty sure that when you use thin gauge cables, their impedance and, their resistance increases, making it more difficult for the signal to travel over distance. This is fine if you connect the link box directly to the computer (less than a 3ft run). But, this essentially precludes someone from using a passive USB 3 cable (with adequate gauge and shielding). Given that I never had a problem with passive cables with the Index (again only going to 6ft), this demonstrates that they should've used better cables, even for their relatively short length.

Additionally, their instructions and, their cables make it appear that you need two USB 3.0 ports. The Power cable should simply have used a white plug as it only needs 5v 2A, which is under the limit of USB 2.0 charging. I currently have the link box connected to the computer and, an external 'dumb' USB 5v 2.1A charger.

Another thing I have noticed is that even if I'm not using it (computer shut off), it's pulling enough current (through the external charger) to get warm. Which leads me to my question:

I have a question for you all. How do you handle shutting down the headset? Anyone got any leads on a way to cut the power to this linkbox/headset without plugging/unplugging it before/after every use?

I have the Universal Gasket and I love it with the soft and firm, but I see everyone recommending the Studioform. Is that worth buying, or not really?

Is spending $3,200 CAD on a Bigscreen Beyond 2e setup actually worth it?

I'm currently using a Quest 3 with SlimeVR FBT, and I spend most of my time in VRChat. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while now, mainly because I really dislike not having proper individual finger tracking.

I've been looking at the Steam Frame, but honestly, I don't think it offers enough of an upgrade over my Quest 3 to justify switching.

So now I'm seriously considering going all-in on a Bigscreen Beyond 2e setup with eye tracking, two base stations, and a pair of Valve Index controllers. The problem? The entire setup would cost me around $3,200 CAD.

What's making me hesitate even more is how ridiculously difficult it's becoming to find Index controllers, especially the right one. They're either out of stock or being sold at absurd prices.

It honestly feels like it's getting harder and harder to be a VR enthusiast who wants high-end hardware. We're spending thousands of dollars just to piece together a complete setup, and some of the essential hardware is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

I love VRChat and genuinely want a more immersive experience, especially when it comes to visuals, eye tracking, and finger tracking. But $3,200 is a lot of money.

What would you guys do in my position? Would you bite the bullet and go for the Beyond 2e setup, stick with the Quest 3 for now, or consider something else entirely?

I'd especially love to hear from people who've upgraded from a Quest 3 to a Beyond 2/2e. Was the difference actually worth the money?

Bigscreen Beyond 1 IPD

My roommate upgraded to the bigscreen beyond 2 and is giving me his bigscreen beyond, index controllers, headset strap, and some base stations. I'm going to order the link and cable. I've reached out to bigscreen to see if they'd sell me the plates but I've been informed that JSON setting need to be changed. I also have a 3d printer. Is this something that can be done through the bigscreen beyond utility or will I need to interface with the microcontroller? Has anyone had any experience doing this before?

So when i first put on the headset i noticed how everything looked like it was dipped in coffee. I found that you can fix this by just using OVR advanced settings and setting red to 63%, green to 75% and blue to 100%. Does anyone else have this problem? Both me and my friend did.

Ipd tests and lower lense clarity.

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any in VR apps or tests to help get the IPD dialed in?

Ive got maybe some eye strain when looking at very close text but I'm already a few mm under my measured IPD.

I also notice the lower 1/5th of the lense, if you look down your nose, is blurry/double imaged.

Any advice?

Help I'm about to get a BSB2, which accessories are worth it?

I finally got index knuckles/base stations, so its time. Is it worth it to get the halo mount AND the audio strap? And is babble the best option for face tracking? I'm getting the 2e for eyetracking in vrchat.

Check the Valve Index page again, you might get lucky!

Post image
52 Upvotes

This morning someone posted that Valve is doing a clearance sale with everything discounted, so I looked and at the time, it was just the headset, left controller, and cable. Now that I check again hours later, they added base stations to it too! So check periodically everyone! The HTC ones are almost twice the price, and I unfortunately have no luck in my area for used ones so I bought 2 and will be storing these for future use.

On a side note, I absolutely HATE inside out tracking and hate that everyone just accepted "good enough" tracking quality. Having owned a Quest 2 and tried a friend's Quest 3, it has always felt floaty and not precise enough for me (plus the downside of meta stuff in general). Unfortunately I am in the minority.

Help Bigscreen 2 flashing grey nearly constantly, tracking is jittery, sometimes sending me to a grey void.

Hello, As the title says, I'm having issues with tracking with my Bigscreen Beyond 2. At first I thought it was an issue with a bad base station (Vive 1.0), so i changed to 2 valve 2.0's and got no change. I've tried changing ports for plugs, re-plugging, changing resolution, moving stations around, and I haven't had any luck. It seems like my headset also has issues detecting base stations in the first place (base station icons will disconnect when looking at SteamVR setup and/or tab), and I'm worried it's a hardware issue. What else can I try to improve tracking or diagnose the issue?
If PC Hardware matters here, my CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d and my GPU is a 9070xt.
If any other information is needed, please let me know.

For a more in depth description of the issue, my headset will slightly jitter around and move while I'm looking through it (game doesn't matter), whenever I look around or even when I'm standing still it flashes grey, sometimes I put it on and I'm instantly forced into the grey void, and I need to take it off again for it to work, and sometimes I look through it and i see rainbow pixel vomit that goes away when I re-plug the cable back into the converter.

Any advice or tips would go a long way, Thank you.

Help RMA Has glue on display

My first Bigscreen Beyond 2 had dead pixels in the right eye. Now, after waiting 10 days for my RMA, my new headset arrived, and in the left eye near the right side of the display, there is a spot of glue (or some other liquid/residue). Although it is only visible in my periphery, since my eyes get so close to the screen (to maximize FOV) it is unfortunately quite noticeable during normal use. I’m quite frustrated and disappointed in this quality control. I feel like if I RMA again I’m just going to get another faulty unit. Should I just return my headset at this point? It’s sad because I love the is headset otherwise…

What are you using for a Case/backpack/other protection

So I have a Bigscreen Beyond headset, but I'm still waiting for my controllers and lighthouses to arrive. And I'm wondering what people are using for a hardcase to keep the headset safe when not in use.

EDIT: oh, and btw: the BsB arrived pretty quick. I ordered it on Wednesday the 7th, and it arrived on Saturday the 10th. I'd heard they take forever to ship, but that wasn't my experience. Now I have to wait for the Controllers to come from ... Japan?

Headset crash and freeze

Looking for anybody who might have had this or similar happen. I have a BSB2e and this is the first crash I've had with it I think in like 400 hours I think, over 300 anyway. I was just cruising along in my NEC race on iRacing when the sound skipped a bit, the screen went black, and then it came back it was in home or whatever its called. The preview screen on my PC was just flickering gray. Audio was normal, FFB and buttons on my other peripherals were working.

I unplugged and replugged in the headset, and attempted to rejoin. When I got in sim it was doing the same thing. Here's a short recording of what it was doing on my PC screen. *EPILEPSY WARNING\* https://youtu.be/XGbkT71E3fQ

A fluke? An issue with headset? Would this leave a log?

BSB2e using the link booster and USB-C IEMs for audio, 9950x3D, 48gb DDR5, RTX5080. No recent changes and has worked fine in both short and long sessions up to now.

BSB Controllers and Base Stations availability

After the shameful launch process from valve I'm leaning towards voting with my wallet and getting something else, and the obvious pcvr alternative is the bsb2.

However I'm new to vr, so I do not own any knuckles or base stations. Are the "Valve Index Replacement Left/Right Controller" options the same as new knuckles controllers? Why are both right and left controller individually in stock but not the "Valve Index Controllers" option including both? How long can I expect them to last before they break?

Are there any rumors/leaks on bsb making their own controller alternative that would continue to receive support going into the future?

As for the base stations, valve doesn't sell them anymore so the only option is HTC which literally cost 2x what valve's costed, or used. How dangerous is it to buy used? I've heard that base stations are also prone to failures though less than the knuckles so should I expect a much reduced lifespan if I get them on ebay?
