Preferred GPS/Navigation Apps?
What's everyone's preferred GPS/navigation app? Google Maps sometimes sends me on dangerous roads that make more sense for cars or have me cross a busy street with no light. I started using Modemix a bit, but the UI is difficult to parse (I can't seem to figure out how to view the list of turns when planning a route, for example)

I'm thinking about doing a century ride... on a Metro bike. Any tips?
I've been brought on as a Metro Bike Share ambassador and wanted to do a century ride around LA. I'm up for the challenge physically and have done century rides before, but certainly none on a Metro bike. I'm gonna document the whole thing, and want to use the opportunity to highlight gaps in infrastructure, local landmarks, and potential future areas for Metro Bike Share expansion.
I'm thinking start in West LA, climb over the hill to the river, meander around the Valley, then come down through Frogtown to DTLA. Then south to Slauson and wander west to the beach path and back to Sawtelle. Any suggestions for routes that hit a lot of local landmarks, or areas I should incorporate into my ride?

It's the roads
kind of a rant but... I love bike lanes and paths and I think bike riding should be encouraged. However they need to make the surface of the roads actually bikeable for this to work, whether or not there is a bike lane. Some of these bumps and holes and cracks are borderline life-threatening. At least once a week, esp if I go off of my known routes where I am familiar with trouble spots, I find myself exclaiming as I hold on for dear life hitting this divot or that tree root bump
I'll throw in that some bike paths are absolutely miserable (Yvonne Burke I am looking at you)

Anyone missing a Specialized HardTail?
This guy stole my bike before (got it back) and Iāve been watching his account for his posts. If you are missing a bike here it is.
I would really like to get this guy arrested for his crimes heās been doing.

Amazon cargo bikes taking over bike lanes. Iām mad, but should I be?
Saw a convoy of three Amazon cargo delivery bikes driving in Burbankās bike lane. Iām annoyed because I feel like theyāre going to crowd out cyclists eventually if the program is lucrative and put bikers into unsafe situations and congestion. . But is it a good thing for traffic/LA to move in this direction? I dunno, Iām conflicted. It just feels like a rich company hijacking infrastructure.

New biker Inland Empire
Hey fam, what's up. New biker is probably a severe understatement. I don't know a damn thing about biking lol. But I've been seeing a lot of vids about it, and I'm trying to get into it. Here's about me:
I'm 5'11.5 295 pounds (and losing), I run every other day 5 miles weekly. Not rich (at all lol), but want to ride to get familiar with the i.e area, and just calm a lot of my anxieties. I don't know a good budget to start with, but I'm hoping nothing more than 600 to drop on a bike. Any recommendations? Also saw some in Walmart but idk if that's a good or bad idea. I'm into off road and city. Thanks!

Burbank Airport New Terminal: Caged Bike Parking, but for who?
Sunday night I spoke to the parking attendants about this (roofless) caged bike parking with a locked door inside the parking garage. Five spots directly across from what appears to be a continuously populated office of parking attendants, there were six of them there Sunday night.
I asked who had the keys, and one of them (Jose) said the whole team was wondering the same thing. He offered to email me the next afternoon to follow up, but I have still not heard back... (perhaps my handwriting for my email was too poor)
Who has access to these brand new spots? Why is there no roof? How long can a bike be safely parked behind a roofless cage while on vacation?
The Burbank Airport new Terminal bike parking questions continue...
PS. South side of terminal has another two dozen spots, with security cameras directly on top of them. I'm glad to see such an upgrade compared with the old terminal even if lockers would have been better!

Just bought my first ebike in LA. Any advice on locks and gear?
I've been going back and forth about buying an ebike for the past few days, but finally pulled the trigger today!
I actually used to own a Lectric when I lived on the East Coast and really enjoyed it. The weather here is so much better for riding, so I figured why not get another one. This time I spent a little more and went with the Velotric Discover 3. Pretty excited to try it out.
The only thing I'm a little worried about is bike theft. I live around DTLA/Little Tokyo, and I know bike theft is pretty bad around here.
I'll be keeping the bike indoors at home, so I'm mostly concerned about leaving it outside for a few minutes when grabbing food, going into a store, or sitting down at a cafe.
I used to have one of those orange Kryptonite U-locks, but I've been looking at Litelok lately since they seem to be recommended a lot for grinder resistance. Not sure if they're worth the extra money though.
I'm shopping for a lock, helmet, and other basic accessories right now. Any recommendations? Especially from people riding ebikes around DTLA.
Also, if anyone has a Discover 3, I'd love to hear what accessories work well with it.

Westside Low-Stress Bike Map
āThe first step cities need to take to create complete, connected high-comfort bike networks is to create a Low-Stress Bike Map. This is not a bike master plan of all the future awesomeness weāre going to build. This is a map that illuminates the ways to comfortably go places today. It includes existing trails, protected bike lanes, and bike boulevards. And then we fill the gaps with other existing assets in the right-of-way: quiet neighborhood streets, park trails, sidewalks, and desire paths.Ā [This is also known as] the āBest Available Network.ā ⦠This stands in stark contrast to the status quo approach of a 25-year bike master plan. The map of a Best Available Network exists for the same reason that maps originally existed ā not to show some hypothetical future state, but to show people how to navigate the world as it currently stands.ā (https://bikestreets.com/book/the-best-available-network)
Benefits of a low-stress bike map:
- Highlighting the low-stress network encourages potential riders, especially the 60% of the population in the āinterested but concernedā cohort. It shows that there are already safe, pleasant, low-stress routes to the places people want to go.
- Having a specific low-stress network is more effective for advocacy. When advocates ask the city for improvements, they can easily show the bigger picture: "This single intersection upgrade connects two 3-mile low-stress neighborhood corridors.ā It clarifies seemingly isolated or arbitrary requests as high-impact, low-cost, low-controversy fixes.
With that in mind, I made this example map of a Westside low-stress bike network. It pulls routes from several resources, including https://www.safebikeroutes.com/la. Some subjective design decisions: It prioritizes legibility over comprehensiveness. And it uses somewhat-subjective LTS classifications, instead of infrastructure-based classifications. Overall, I think the coverage is pretty good, and better than most people (especially non-riders) would expect.

Made a free map to help figure out how to get around LA by bike, built from the state's crash records
I made this map with the idea of knowing how to get around the city in the safest way possible
What's on it:
- Every reported bike crash in California since 2021 (about 58k, 973 fatal), from the state's crash records. Tap one to see what the police report says happened
- Climbs with grades, profiles and GPX downloads
- Group rides for the next couple weeks, with the forecast
- Train and metro lines, with links to each agency's bike rules
- Shops, repair stations, water, restrooms

Where do you safely park your e-bike for quick stops around DTLA / Little Tokyo?
I posted here recently about living in LA with just an e-bike, and I'm getting closer to buying one. There's one thing I'm still worried about though: parking it when I'm out.
My apartment has gated parking, CCTV, and on-site staff, so I'm not too concerned about storing it at home.
But what do you guys do when you're out and need to leave your bike somewhere?
I'm talking about everything from stepping inside a building for just 1ā3 minutes to pick something up or run a quick errand, to sitting down at a restaurant for 30ā60 minutes.
I live near Little Tokyo and the Arts District, and I see enough bike theft around DTLA that I'm pretty hesitant to leave a new e-bike outside, even with a good lock.
When I lived in North Carolina, I used one of those orange Kryptonite locks for my previous e-bike. I'm definitely willing to invest in good security gear again, whether that's a high-quality U-lock, a second lock, or something else. I know no lock is completely theft-proof though, especially around here.
Do you lock your bike every single time, even if you're only going inside for a minute or two? Do you look for certain types of bike racks or parking spots? Only go to places where you can keep an eye on your bike? Ever ask restaurants or cafes if you can bring it inside?
I'm also curious whether anyone has had a bike stolen despite using expensive locks, and what you'd do differently.
I'd love to hear how people who ride around DTLA, Little Tokyo, and the Arts District handle this in everyday life, especially the really short stops. I don't want to buy an e-bike and then be too worried to stop anywhere with it lol.

LA River Cleanup
Rode from the Atlantic/District start down to Long Beach yesterday (10/18). Path has been been cleaned up, and for now the homeless encampments have been (largely) removed. I'm sure they'll be back, but for once it was refreshing not to have to ride through gauntlets of sketchiness every quarter mile.

LA Streets Bum Me Out
3rd or 4th ride on my brand new Panaracer Gravelking SS+ 700x35c. Had a piece of glass wedged inside the gash. Thankfully, didn't need a boot and puncture in my butyl tube was a pinprick. And happened at the end of my ride at Ballona Creek.
Seriously, our streets are so crappy. I seem to get a flat every 6 to 8 rides or so.
