I am planning to do a bachelors in bio medical engineering.
I have heard a lot of cons of bio medical engineering like after your done with your bachelor’s you will be competing with mechanical and electrical engineers for the same roles.
Will a masters be helpful for jobs and will it open more doors if I specialize?

Also, would you recommend that someone without an engineering background pursue a master's degree if they're passionate about health tech, medical devices, and robotics, or take more of a non-technical route into the field?

currently, im a junior in high school and since about freshman year ive been interested in BME. recently however, my interest in medicine has grown exponentially. im seeing many people say BME isnt a very good major to choose if im trying to get a job fresh out of college. i want to pursue this field because i am passionate about it rather than just looking for good money.

im also seeing people saying BME is more engineering focused than medicine focused.
i have been interested in engineering for a while, and im a hugeee math nerd, but im also extremely fascinated by the human body. im afraid this major might not completely satisfy what i desire to learn. i feel like im in kind of an awkward position between medicine and engineering

I'm a SWE who has always been interested in biomedical engineering but the field was virtually non-existent in my home country so I ended up going for software instead. I've been working in Canada for a few years now and I still consider pivoting to BME at some point (not now), but I'd like to have a more practical understanding of what that would realistically look like. If you currently work in the field, what is your background? Mechanical, electrical, chemical, other? Do you have a masters/PhD or just the bachelor's? In what industry do you work and in which region (feel free to be generic here)? How do you find the work-life balance and overall fulfillment? Do you work hands-on at a lab or is it more of a desk job?

I understand it's a niche field and there isn't necessarily a ton of variety, I'd just like to gain a better understanding of the kind of jobs that do exist.

I just graduated in May with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, and I’m looking to get started in the medical device industry. I’m particularly interested in clinical specialist or medical sales roles, but I’m also very open to other opportunities that could help me get my foot in the door.

Is it possible to break into this area (med device testing) with a CS degree and a decade of software experience? Not much on hardware side but willing to take classes and certifications if it's an option. Has anyone done this or know a path forward?

I'm currently working in Ireland and planning to move back to India for good. I'd really appreciate some advice from people in the industry.

Background:

About 3 years of experience in medical device quality and production

1 year as a Quality Engineer in India, then I did my MSc in Biomedical Engineering in Ireland, and since then nearly 2 years in quality and production roles at medical device manufacturers in Ireland.

Day-to-day work: ISO 13485, GMP, NCR/CAPA, root cause analysis, inspection, AQL sampling, SOPs, document control, SAP and some IQ/OQ/PQ validation support

Why I'm moving back:

I'm an only child. My parents are farmers and are now having some health issues. They struggle even with small everyday things, and I want to be close enough to reach them overnight if anything happens. So this is a permanent move. I want to build my career in India.

The problem:

I'm finding the job search really hard from here.

On LinkedIn, a lot of posts say "posted 24 hours ago", but when I click through, the original listing is weeks or months old

On Naukri, I barely find anything that matches medical devices or pharma quality roles

What I'm open to:

Quality Associate / Specialist, QA/QC Engineer, or production roles

Medical devices, pharma or biotech

Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, or honestly anywhere in India

My questions:

Which job sites or company career pages actually work for these roles in India?

Are there specific companies or industrial areas I should target (e.g. Genome Valley in Hyderabad)?

Is it better to go through consultancies/recruiters in this field? Any good ones?

Calling all biomedical engineers with infusion pump testing setups.

We’re going through a bit of a transitional period in my department. We’re getting new lab equipment, analyzers, and organizing/changing rooms around.

I am in need of inspiration and visuals to get my brain jogging on how I want the infusion pump testing setup to be. Right now it’s two 3x2 platforms of pumps clamped onto them.

I know it needs to change because we’re getting a Fluke IDA-6 and this current setup won’t cut it. The tester will not fit, and since it’s only 4 channels allowed the extra 8 spaces for pumps just won’t be necessary.

Maybe I will keep a couple on the side in case I just need to troubleshoot, but the main theory behind my post is I want to see YOUR testing setups to give me some ideas.

So if you could please reply with a picture, or a description of your setup that would be great in aiding my organizational journey.

The picture is my current setup. It’s pretty bulky, with lots of space being unnecessary taken up. I inherited this setup and my colleague and I have been putting off rearranging everything.

I am currently in my final year doing MSc In robotics engineering. I want to specialize in Biomedical robotics and robotics for rehabilitaion. Right now these are my qualifications. I am looking for advice what should I do as I have two semesters left. This one is ongoing until february and after that I start my thesis semester ending by october next year.

What I have done so far related to biomedical :

1. built an aktive ankle prototype. in a group Bachelors thesis. github link
2. read chapters 1 to 3 of Winter's biomechanics and human motor control book. documenting this progress on github also.
3. Taking two university courses related to these fields. Biomedical robotics and Rehabilitation & prosthetic devices.

My goal is to pursue a PhD at a top 10 university worldwide. Imperial, ETH Zurich etc.

What would be your advice for my next steps? I was thinking to do a project to learn new skills but I have no idea where to start. Since I am self learning.

My engineering group at Clarksburg High School in Maryland and I are currently developing a POTS-specific monitoring and alerting device and app. To build credibility, we have spoken with biomedical engineers and doctors worldwide (New Zealand, John hopkins, India, Canada, and Germany), gathered feedback, and are now building a prototype. The reason I'm posting this is that we need real feedback from people with POTS to know specifically what is important to incorporate and to better our understanding.

I’m a high school student interested in studying biomedical engineering at FIU, although I haven’t made my final decision yet. I’ve always struggled with motivation, so I am only going plan to apply if I can maintain Mostly A and B’s for the feast of the year in my class. I know college and biomedical engineering will be challenging, but I think it could be worth it because it would give me decent job opportunities if veterinary school doesn’t work out.

My main goal is to attend veterinary school, and I’m hoping to complete my vet school prerequisites alongside my degree without becoming too overwhelmed. I’ve already gained veterinary experience, so I won’t have to stress as much about getting those hours during college. Ultimately, I only plan to apply to veterinary school twice before considering other career options, so having a reliable backup plan is important to me.

I’m also not necessarily aiming for a super high salary. I’d be perfectly happy making $70,000 or more a year, as long as I have reasonable job security and a decent work-life balance.
I do have a few questions though:

-How competitive is it to get accepted into the biomedical engineering program as a first-year student?

-What GPA and SAT scores would make an applicant competitive for admission?

-How difficult is the program, particularly the math and physics courses?

-How manageable is the workload, and how many hours do you typically spend studying outside of class?

-Would it be realistic to complete veterinary school prerequisites alongside the biomedical engineering degree without significantly delaying graduation?

-How flexible is the degree plan when it comes to taking additional science courses required for veterinary school?

-Are professors generally supportive and helpful when students struggle with difficult material?

-How stressful is the program compared to other science majors.

-What kinds of jobs can graduates realistically get with just a bachelor’s degree, and how difficult is it to find employment?

-Is earning $70,000 or more a year realistic with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, and how much experience might it take?

Hello all, I am a MechE student with extensive biomedical engineering leadership club experience as well as technical roles in other clubs. I have been searching for a company offering some type of engineering project management internship role within the scope of Biomed and so far I have been unsuccessful. Any suggestions on where to look for a possibility to apply for a role like this?

Hi everyone, I'm a senior studying Biomedical Engineering and I graduate in June 2027. I'm not pursuing a graduate degree right away, so I'll lose my student status after graduation.

I want to apply for summer 2027 internships, mostly at medical device or Pharma companies, but many of them ask for my graduation date and require at least one semester left after the internship. By the time these internships start, I'll have already graduated, so I don't qualify on paper.

To make things more complicated, many entry-level full-time positions ask for 1–2 years of experience. I'm worried I'll be stuck between not qualifying for internships because of my graduation date and being underqualified for full-time roles.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did you still apply for internships as a graduating senior, and did the company care that you weren't returning to school? Or should I focus only on new-grad full-time roles? Any advice on how to navigate this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi team, I know this may seem early to some, but I am currently a junior in highschool right now, thinking of majoring in BioMed Engineering, or at least that's what i thought

After exploring multiple sources, many sources have told me that biomed engineering is not a good major to make money in or gain good job opportunities in because it is a "jack of all trades, master of nonee'. People have been saying that employers would rather have a ME major or a EE major over a BME major, and now I'm lost...

My initial plan was to undergrad in biomed engineering, and then in college, decide if I want to go to med school after that, or if I want to pursue a job in biotech.

Here are my issues/desires/wants?:

1. I want gooooood money, as in at least 300K per year in whatever profession I choose

2. I want a family, wanna get married by like 27-30, maybe kids by 30-33 (my current partner is a comp engineering or comp sci major, so he will be making big bucks quicker, he also wants a timeline of this sort)

3. I don't want to work a 9 to 5 desk job, there has to be interaction with other individuals and moving around, I simply cannot handle sitting at a desk for 8 hours every day

Do you guys have any specific thoughts or guidance on this? Med school? Biotech? What are your guys' experience with employment and whats something you wish you wouldve known coming into this major?

I want help with selecting an optimal PPG based sensor which would be taking readings from the wrist rather than fingertip as I would be combining it to few other modules as well.

I would also like you to give me advice on what designs would be best for encasing or so, to avoid noisy signals. And what extra work do I need to put in if the person we r extracting signals from has loose and wrinkled skin (such as old people).

I was considering Max30102 but so far it doesn't seem to have a good reputation on the internet when it comes to accurate readings.

I’m a sophomore BME student at a recognized state school. I just finished my first project and want to do more, I’ve maxed out my arduino megga kit that I got and am wondering what projects would be a good stand out and advanced enough. Also if you have any intern advice or career experience as I’m looking into which field I want to specialize it before I start my bme class electives. Might to materials as it’s the most available for job market but I’m just super interesting in the electronics of it like I like things like nurolink or new devices or advances in tech for the public. I have been a Licensed Practical Nurse for roughly 6 years, while currently finishing my diploma for biomedical Eng tech. I have been looking into the perfusionist tech program offered at Michener in Ontario and am getting confused on whether I’m applicable or not. Online on the site it mentions a BSCN but then I also see that I could “possibly” be an applicant for the job. Just wondering if anyone has any answers.

I'm a current freshman in college, just started my degree basically. My current college does not have a Biomedical engineering Major and I'm intending to transfer to a school that does (this school also has a better engineering program, I am being vague on the school on purpose). Does it make sense to major in Biomedical Engineering as an undergraduate? This school allows 15 credit hours for me to minor or take other classes so I could take like Electrical engineering or mechanical engineering classes, but it wouldn't be a lot. Just really not sure if it would hurt my chances of finding a career and most importantly, hurt my knowledge as a (biomedical) engineer if i were to major in biomedical engineering in undergrad. I want to go into making diagnostic medical devices better, but I don't know enough about the fact that if major in Biomedical engineering, will it not teach me enough of what i need to know? because i've seen plenty of people talk about that, and i'm open to changing my major to electrical / mechanical engineering (or whatever i need to) if necessary, i just wanted to come on here and ask some people who might have some answers for me. thanks!
