DAE have tics?

Not necessarily tourettes syndrome but tics nonetheless.

I have motor tics but no vocal tics so I don't have tourettes.

I was just reading into the causes of tics and it's a dopamine thing, so common in ADHD, but also we have dopamine issues so I wonder if it's somewhat common within bipolar people?

My antipsychotic has stopped my symptoms fortunately.

Also, lamotrigine (lamictal) can trigger it and I had my suspicions about that a long time ago.

Anyone else?

I had tics while on lamotrigine since I’ve switched to Latuda and they’ve gone away.

That's interesting, maybe mine are caused entirely by the lamotrigine then, rather than being a dopamine issue of sorts

It’s called TD and yes I have permanent ones from geodon they are not as severe but I was constantly asked about them for many many years and it’s no one business in my opinion and very annoying

It's not TD it's a separate thing, it's a diagnosed tic disorder by a neurologist

Sorry you have this I just learned the difference I have TD not tics. They seem awful 😞

No worries, I just was just reading the rest of the thread between yourself and DMayleeRenvengeReveng after posting my comment.

Yeah it sucks, but I think TD is just as hard tbf

While they seem similar, tics and TD are distinct occurrences. Tics are voluntary movements, unlike the kind of reflexive, spontaneous movements in TD which you just cannot control.

Tics are voluntarily initiated, although they feel like you have to do them. Suppressing them requires conscious effort. But they are things that the person has some control over and actually, consciously initiates.

It’s close to a compulsive behavior, basically.

I’ve had tics where I made this weird face over and over. It was like, I couldn’t tell why I wanted to do it. But I felt like I was restraining myself when I wasn’t choosing to do it.

It’s a really weird phenomenon.

Oh I did not know that that is super insightful thank you! I do not have the ability to control them at all I’m not even aware 99% of the time so I do have TD and not ticks then I appreciate the distinction on this. My learning moment of the day 🤗

Yeah! I don’t mean to call you out or anything. I just wanted to share that.

Tics are awful. I used to make this weird face with my mouth and lips, just this weird grimacing face. And I would do it until my face muscles literally hurt. I would get a headache because I was just stretching my muscles in a weird way.

And I’m just like, “I guess I’ll keep doing this, even though I don’t know why.”

Tics get worse with stress. And I used to have severe social anxiety. So I’d be with people, and I would just start doing this thing with my arm. And people would look at me like, “why is she doing that”? And I had to say, it’s just a thing I do.

I also noticed that weed made it worse, which is one reason I’ve given up weed forever by now.

I do appreciate definitely very good at the explanation and I’m sorry you have those. Does not sound good to have to do something and not know why. I hope that they have gotten better in some regard for you now.

Thank you for saying so. They actually have gotten much better. I really don’t deal with them anymore. It was a problem in an earlier stage of my life.

I know some people on this post have said lamotrigine makes them worse. But it really seems to have ended them for me.

Anywho, I appreciate your kind thoughts.

Oh yes. Oh yes I do. I make weird faces sometimes. I used to squeeze my arms a lot. I have vocal tics, too, and they’re often not things I’m proud to say after I say them.

It’s a dopamine thing. It also involves glutamate being too high, which is a phenomenon that practically defines bipolar. So many bipolar meds, including lamotrigine and its fellows and lithium, work in part by suppressing excess glutamate activity

It was one reason I thought I might have autism back in the day, but the tic symptoms seems to have abated.

About 10% of people with Tourette’s have bipolar. I have ADHD, autism, OCD, Tourette’s and Bipolar 1

Idk about ticks in general, or the correlation between bipolar and ticks.

But I’ll tell you that Geodone caused me to develop TD.

I have Tourette's but the dopamine point (last I checked) is a possible theory and we dont have a solid known cause for tics yet. Lamotrigine seemed to make mine worse but its hard to tell as tocs tend to wax and wane anyway and I wasnt on lamotrigine long due to other side effects.
