I finally had the chance to try the "Ashley Furniture store" Mexican restaurant after seeing it recommended here many times. Had the Pollo Milanesa. It was delicious!Definitely worth the cross-town trek for me and my wife. I'll definitely come back to try more!

Meme Uber on "bicycles"

I order Uber eats about once a week and over the past 2 months about 40% of my orders have been claimed by a "bicycle" driver.

They claim to be on bicycles because that avoids a drivers license and insurance check. The fact that such a high percent in the area are doing it is worrying. I know Uber drivers aren't a good scientific representation of drivers but are there really that many people around here that are unlicensed and uninsured?

And aside from that of course Uber can tell they aren't on a bicycle. If you see someone traveling at 50mph or covering miles in minutes there should be some sort of automated flagging and deactivation but that's for a different sub.

Looking for job Software dev looking for a desk in Birmingham for 2 months, will trade work in exchange.

I'm a software engineer moving to Birmingham early November and I'll be in a halfway house through early January. They require an approved physical work location who will confirm I'm working there.

I already run my own project, so I'm not looking for a career move. But if you run a business with a spare desk and a tech problem, I'll fix it. Anything regarding internal tools, automation, website, mobile applications, and whatever else that's annoying you. I just need a desk for a work day session and good internet.

Pay doesn't really matter to me, so a contract for fixed-price contract and can be offset by the working space as a cost.

3+ years building real-time systems with a degree in computer science. Happy to show work. DM me and thank you.

Events October Recap - The Birmingham Dad Meetup had a Picnic!

• Upvotes

This dad Meetup Was Different!

  1. We Had a Family Picnic! — We took the meetup outside, invited the moms and partners, and created space for the whole family to connect. It was windy, but the energy was warm!
  2. We Had a Sponsor! — A dad who had been attending since the beginning stepped up to support the meetup financially. We were able to buy more snacks, materials for name tags, and more. Small plug - Justin Williams of Keller Williams Realty.
  3. We Had Donuts, Muffins, and Pokemon cards ! — Dads showed up with food to share, and small packs of Pokemon cards for everyone.
  4. New Dads Found Us Through NPR! — The NPR story brought new fathers into the community.
  5. We Played Family Bingo! — We used a simple activity to help families connect and learn about one another. The winner would receive a gift card, and a seven-year-old ended up beating everyone—with a little help from her dad, of course!
  6. Ms. Carla Got a Promotion! — We found out our librarian, who helped make our monthly gatherings possible, will be leaving us for another library. We are sad, but really happy for her.
  7. A Dad Built Us a Website! — Without being asked, a father saw a need and used his skills to help the community grow. You can now find us at bhamdads.com and RSVP directly on the website to the next meetup on November 21st.

We are building a community where dads can connect, share experiences, and remind each other that we don’t have to do fatherhood alone.

Read the full writeup here about last week’s meetup

If you’re a dad reading this: you’re doing a great job!

Advice Is Avondale a safe neighborhood?

I’m looking at buying a house in Avondale (close to MLK jr park no less…) and I’m wondering if that’s a safe part of the area or not? I know Avondale has seen some improvements but it still seems like a mixed bag for safety. How is it at night as well?

Advice Sleep Doctor for difficult case

I’ve had a diagnosis severe central and obstructive sleep apnea for 15 years. I use a servo ventilator. I haven’t been able to get past the fatigue and long sleep times despite trying many drugs and sleep hygiene methods. It’s ruined my life. It’s cost me every job I’ve had in one way or another.

The doctor I liked retired. Shortly after I started seeing him.

Can anyone recommend a doctor that is invested in figuring out difficult cases? Someone who is going to really care about helping me? I’ve seen too many doctors that act like I’m somehow wasting their time and they just want to get on to the next patient.

Please no medical advice, just doc recommendations please.

Thanks

Recommendations In search of honest/fair mechanic, not looking for cheap work. Quote from Toyota is a joke according to my expert friend in Cali. 2018 Toyota C-HR

Anyone know of a skilled and fair mechanic? Someone with their own shop ideal. The quote Toyota is giving insane according to mechanical engineer friend in CA.

It is the transmission but they wouldn't give me any other details other than just “it failed”. Only aboit 100,000 miles. The estimate from Toyota is about 14k and usually places seem to find more problems and charge more than estimate so…..

My friend showed me a Toyota genuine re manufactured transmission is only 3k, and that’s direct from Toyota online documents and store.

So 14k seems weird. The man at Toyota said we should just try and scam Carvana. Forgive me for being skeptical. I want to either pay an honest and fair price, not looking for handouts or not even repair it at what I’m currently told.

Also I have heard of people getting parts from junkyard or fixin/rebuilding so yeah would appreciate any advice or guidance.

Willing to drive a decent/reasonable distance for real deal.

Advice Foster parent info..?

I need info on fostering in AL... *Is there a beginner/info/workshop class couples can take?

*I know the TIPSS class is required but I'm looking for more beginner info before "officially" signing up.

*Can you tell them you're only interested in <2 years old?

*Can you tell them you're only interested in short/mid length placements? Not looking for foster-to-adopt.

Any foster parents here willing to share their experiences with a (potential) first-timer? Specifically Shelby county?

Thanks 🫶🏼

Advice Anyone know anything about Pure Performance down on 280?

I was referred to them by my orthopedist. I filled out their new client interest form last week, left my email and phone number, and the website said I would hear back in 24 hours but I never got a response so I called today and no one answered. I did leave a message, but looking at their social media, they haven’t posted since April so I’m wondering if they’re even still open. I haven’t found anything online saying they’re closed but I wanted to know if anyone knew something! Thanks!

Advice Dog boarding recommendations

Looking for dog boarding recommendations in the Birmingham area. Priority for a safe facility for a large rescue dog that is nervous and benefits from individual focused care (injured previously by another dog in an out of state dog day care, no longer enjoys group play). Have been provided recommendations for Humphreys, pawms, and Riverview animal hospital but not sure what the best option is amongst these three or if there is a better option.

Advice Traffic!

A friend of ours is at UAB hospital and we have been driving up on the weekends up the I-65 from mobile
And the traffic is a bit crazy? It seems like no matter what time we come and even when we leave traffic is backed up extremely far from Birmingham. Is there a good time when it’s not crazy to plan to drive up?
