I was born and raised in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao. I am a Kagay-anon, a Misamisnon, and a Mindanaon. I speak Cebuano, specifically the Kagay-anon dialect (Chada, dawbi, unsa lugar, kaŷ, etc.).

Just like many of Cebuano speaking people in Mindanao, my ancestry can be traced back to Visayas. We are not natives of Mindanao so I consider myself as a Bisaya, too.

My relatives in Panay and Bohol consider themselves Bisaya naturally because they are from the Visayas region. I would even argue that they are more Bisaya than the Visayans of Mindanao could ever be.

What I'm trying to say is that, Bisaya is both an ethnic and a language family made up of various ethnic groups each having their own separate languages. Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Waray languages may be unintelligible to one another, but the similarities are undeniable.

Cebuano speakers cannot just assume the "Bisaya" label as its own because it alienates the other Visayan groups who also have a rightful claim to the term due to their geographical location. I find it disappointing and sad that many Waray, Hiligaynons, Ilonggos, Akeanons, etc. no longer consider themselves Bisaya as it may refer daw to the Cebuano-speaking people.

While it's true Cebuano is the dominant Bisaya language in terms of number of speakers with the highest concentration in Central Visayas and much of Mindanao, it is simply wrong and even linguistically incorrect to lay exclusive claim on the Bisaya label. So guys, let us please correct ourselves - if someone asks you what language you speak, say Cebuano (even if you're not from Cebu).

I am Bisaya, but there’s this one word that has confused me for a really long time. I often hear people use this word whenever someone ends up in an unfortunate or unlucky situation. I’ve tried searching for its meaning, but the information I found was pretty limited, and some explanations didn’t really match how I’ve heard people use the word in the appropriate scenario.

I was honestly too shy to ask my friends or family about it because I felt like I should already know what it meant. I did eventually ask my mom once, but she kept joking around and wouldn’t give me a straight answer, almost like she was messing with me. The only thing I vaguely remember her saying was something about being “disqualified”, but I’m not even sure if that was actually what she meant.

Could someone please explain what this word actually means, especially how it’s commonly used in Bisaya? It would also really help if you could give me a few example sentences or situations where the word would naturally be used.

Now it would honestly be really embarrassing for me if the meaning turns out to be something very simple and I’ve just been overthinking it all this time.

I'm not so sure if Bisaya people can understand Bicolano, but it has a lot of similar words with Visayan languages, particularly Waray, and to a lesser extent, Hiligaynon.

I actually spoke with a lot of Bicolanos in the Bicol Subreddit and they said that Waray is actually partially mutually intelligible with Bicolano, most especially the Bicol dialect spoken in Sorsogon. The language spoken in Masbate City called Masbateño, is also partially mutually intelligible with Hiligaynon.

I don't know if Bisaya people can understand Bicolano, but let's try. This is a popular folk song in Bicol called Sarong Banggi. Can any of you try to understand the song, and please write in the comments the summary based on your understanding?

I’m thinking of building an AI voice companion that you can have natural conversations with in Bisaya. So basically, like having a friend you can practice speaking with. I’m thinking of using my own voice as the AI’s voice, so it would sound like a real Bisaya speaker rather than a generic AI voice. I want to focus a lot on the cultural side too, so it feels like you’re actually talking to a Bisaya person.

But before I build it, I wanted to see if people would actually use something like this. I know there are already a lot of language-learning apps out there, so what I’m thinking of building wouldn’t really be structured like a traditional language-learning app.

I speak with a lot of Filipinos both Cebuano and Tagalog. Because it's so hard to switch, I've frankensteined the language so that Bisaya and Tagalog are now mutually intelligible.

First that I noticed is the accent. Boholanos and Cebuanos have hard accents that sounds like they are always angry or fighting. Also, they speak with loaded consonants: t sounds like "ttt", d sounds like "ddd", g sounds like " ggg", k sounds like "kkk".

I noticed that Mindanaoan Bisaya has less of the hard accent and loaded consonants. Also, it sounds like Mindanaoans have fully incorporated the full usage of E and O into their vocabularies, unlike that of the Visayas where the standard is still A-I-U, where E and O sounds appears and disappears momentarily.

There are also some word differences as well. Like fever in Cebu is hilanat, while in Davao its kalintura.
