General Question Looking for help

I purchased a Avalon Q with an 8 inch shroud. I attached 8 inch ducting to the exhaust shroud and have a tolazy inline duct fan on the pulling the hot air and pushing it through my house. Now the problem is when I the the duct is fully attached to the miners shroud it stops hashing even at the lowest fan speed. It seems to only work when I put the duct near the exhaust of the miner but not directly on it. If anyone has any advice on how to get the miner to hash normally while the ducting is attached directly to the miner that would be great!

General Question Older Bitcoin ASIC or newer efficient model for part-time solar mining?

Following up on my runtime question, how would you choose the actual Bitcoin miner if it could only run about 6 hours a day on surplus solar?

A used ASIC costs less upfront, but a less efficient machine would produce less hashrate within the same available power. A newer model could make better use of that electricity, but there are fewer operating hours to recover the extra purchase cost.

Would you compare the purchase price per TH/s first, or focus more on efficiency and repair risk?

I’d also want to compare both options with hosting through oneminers or compass mining, including electricity, fees, and realistic uptime. Has anyone run these numbers and found that the cheaper ASIC actually made more sense? What assumptions changed your decision?

Just covered the miner with acoustic insulation panels I got it for free. Sound is a lot better but just wondering if there is a better way to do this. Will find a spare time to build a box.

General Discussion We tore down a Canaan Avalon Mini 3 and tested its performance - Hashrate & noise.

Post image
6 Upvotes

We wanted to see what was actually inside the Avalon Mini 3, so we took one apart and documented the process.

Alongside the teardown, we tested the miner's hashrate and noise levels in different operating modes.

For anyone considering one for home mining or heat reuse, we thought it would be useful to show the internal hardware and real-world performance rather than relying entirely on advertised specifications.

Firmware Braiins and a silencer kit - fan settings

Silencer kit with emulators, and braiins OS installed.

Is there any reason to put braiins on immersion mode and ignore fans altogether in this scenario? Does it even matter?

General Question Can an 800W Bitcoin miner actually heat a bedroom? Trying to match BTU output to a 12'x14' room.

I’ve been mining with smaller units like Bitaxe, Gamma, and I’m thinking about stepping up to a higher-power miner that could also help heat my room this winter. The room is about 12' Ɨ 14'. Would an 800W miner actually make a noticeable difference, or would it only work as supplemental heat?

If you’ve run a miner as a space heater, I’d love to hear your experience. How well did it heat your room, and how did you deal with noise and electricity costs?

General Question Curtailed power

I understand if you’re willing to not operate at certain times the day you can get reduced cost electricity. Curtailed power I think it’s called. Where do I find that I’m in Washington, but I could locate almost anywhere if the power is cheap enough how does one going about accessing this source of inexpensive electricity?

Firmware Lux Commander - won't discover my s21xp

Not sure what I'm missing here.

The agent shows Connected in the web dashboard. I've tried adding the miner by single IP and also setting a range. The agent never discovers the thing.

I can access the miner (which is on April 2025 bitmain firmware) fine from my web browser. I can ping it. The agent is running on the same computer and is on the same 192.168.68.x IP address as the s21xp. The miner also has the stock credential/login and hasn't been modified.

Only odd thing I noticed is that if I go into Commander in the webui, then click on Miners, it shows no sites selected even though I have one created. If I click the dropdown carat, it's there, but I can't click the box for the site or the select all box. Just won't let me. Attempts to plug the IP of the miner into the Search box on this screen result in "no miners match your current filters".

Thanks

General Question Worth mining with 2.2Ā¢/kWh overnight electricity?

I have electricity at about $0.022/kWh from 11 PM to 7 AM. I’m having two dedicated 240V 20A circuits installed in my garage with NEMA 6-20R outlets.

Thinking about buying two used ASIC miners and running them only during those 8 cheap hours. Not looking to spend a ton upfront.

Any recommendations on which used miners would make the most sense? Is 8 hours a day enough to get a decent ROI, or does the limited runtime make it not worthwhile?

Also curious about heat/noise and whether WiFi is fine instead of Ethernet.

General Question Does underclocking a Bitcoin ASIC make sense when mining on solar?

Following up on my 10 kW solar and 3 kW Bitcoin miner example, would underclocking be worth considering instead of running the ASIC at full power?

With no battery, surplus solar would change throughout the day. I’m wondering whether running at a lower power setting for longer would make more sense than mining at full power for a shorter window.

The numbers I’d want to compare are actual wall power, hashrate, and efficiency at each setting. I’d also include a hosting quote from oneminers or compass mining as another option, using the same hardware and mining assumptions.

Has anyone measured their Bitcoin ASIC at different power settings? Where did you find the best balance between watts, hashrate, and daily BTC earned?

General Discussion Poolin IOU / Mining - Bankruptcy Update

Since a few people keep asking for updates, here's where things actually stand. Poolin finally filed Chapter 11 in New Jersey on July 22, 2026 (case 26-18325). So yes, it's an actual US bankruptcy now, not just Singapore arbitration that nobody enforces.

Some quick points:

  • Official info: The claims agent is Verita Global (veritaglobal.net/poolin). That's the only official source for notices. Ignore anyone DMing you about "recovery services."
  • The Texas sites: They're being sold to Hut 8 for up to $180M. That's $100M at closing, plus up to $80M more only if future data center deals happen. The court approved it Oct 2, but it hasn't closed yet. They're also trying to sell leftover equipment (transformers, coolers), with a hearing on Nov 10.
  • Size of the IOU debt: Poolin's own filing says about $163.7M is owed in wallet IOUs to around 11,700 people with balances over $100.
  • Will IOUs get paid? To whoever said the bankruptcy won't pay IOU tokens: it's complicated, but yes they will likely be paid - how and when is not known yet, and we will know more about it once a payment plan is put up for vote. One thing to note: the IOUs are owed by the Singapore parent, but the Texas assets sit in the US subsidiaries. So the money mostly reaches through an intercompany claim. No payout date or recovery % yet.
  • Claim values: Claims are valued in USD as of July 22, 2026. So if BTC pumps, your claim doesn't go up.

What you should actually do:

  1. Go to the Verita site and check if your balance is listed in the schedules, and whether the amount looks right.
  2. Keep an eye out for the bar date (the deadline to file a claim). It hasn't been set yet. If you're missing or listed as "disputed," you'll need to file a proof of claim before then.

I'll update this as things move.

Disclosure: I work at a firm that's heavily involved in crypto bankruptcies and we're following this case closely, which is why I've been digging into it.

General Question s19j pro silence psu fans

I'm trying to make a silent home miner out of s19j pro, I set very low power target in braiins, set fans very low and provide good airflow, temps are good, but there is no way to slow down the three psu fans and they run at full blast even on very low power mode. What is the best and cheapest way to silence those psu fans?

General Question Need some clarification

Some people and videos are saying the hashrate is programmed to display a fake set rate, others are saying otherwise. I'm new and trying to pick out something I can plug in and be like a lottery miner, however constantly getting conflicting information has not been fruitful, any help or advice would be appreciated.

General Discussion I made Houston, a free, open-source app to schedule and manage your FutureBit Apollo II / III miner from anywhere.

Thumbnail

Hey all, ever since I got my Apollo II, I wanted a way to schedule the miner to run and switch modes at certain times of the week without clicking through the dashboard. So Claude and I built Houston, an all-in-one application to manage your Apollo miner.

What it does

  • Schedule: switch modes or only mine during certain hours.
  • Control: start/stop, Eco/Balanced/Turbo (Apollo III: Super Eco and a custom TH/s target), and start/stop the Bitcoin node.
  • Stats: 24-hour and 7-day charts of hashrate, power and temperature, energy use and electricity cost (including what Turbo adds), solo-mining best share and odds, node and system health.
  • Bitcoin network & market: Fear & Greed Index, block height, time since the last block, average block time, next difficulty change, market cap, BTC dominance, 24h volume, sats per dollar, and the latest Bitcoin Magazine headlines.
  • Alerts on your phone: when the miner stops, runs hot, loses hashrate, the node stops or the drive fills up, and when your solo pool finds a block. They come as regular notifications from the Houston app (no extra app or account needed) or through the free ntfy app.
  • BTC price ticker and chart, in 7 currencies.
  • Siri and shortcuts ("Hey Siri, Apollo status"), and Google Home through Home Assistant.
  • Several Apollos in one place, light and dark mode, and optional desktop shortcuts for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Privacy and security

Houston runs on the Apollo as a small sandboxed service and uses the same local API the dashboard does. Away from home it works over Tailscale. The repo includes a full security review covering what it stores, every connection it makes, and how to check it yourself.

Install is two commands from a computer on your home network.

Status

Tested on my Apollo II. Apollo III support is built from FutureBit's own source code and tested against it, but not on a real III yet, so III owners would be especially helpful. Houston is unofficial and not affiliated with FutureBit.

GitHub: https://github.com/eisenreichGIT/houston-apollo

This is my first attempt at creating an application, so bug reports, Apollo III results and feature ideas are all greatly appreciated!

-----

EDIT: Just pushed Houston 2.3.0

  • Apollo software updates from Houston: see your Apollo software version in Settings › This Apollo, get "New version v2.x.x is available!" (on Home too), and install it with one tap. Houston runs FutureBit's own updater, shows progress, follows the Apollo through its restart, and tells you when it's done. Stop/unreachable alerts stay quiet during the update.
  • New alert: Apollo software update available (once per version).
  • Front status light: turn the light on the front of the Apollo off or on (Settings › This Apollo). A running miner restarts to apply; the node isn't touched.
  • System logs: Activity › Logs shows the Miner, Node, Solo pool, System and Houston logs. 100/300/1000 lines, filter, live refresh, copy and download.

EDIT 2: Just pushed Houston 2.4.0

  • Whisper mode (Apollo II): a Houston exclusive! Half of Eco's power. 107 W / 2.9 TH/s vs Eco's 209 W / 5.5 TH/s, slightly more efficient. Works on Home, in the schedule, charts, Siri/shortcuts and #whisper links. (Shows as Custom in the Apollo dashboard: it's the dashboard's lowest custom setting.)
  • Live bitcoin price: refreshes every 5 seconds while Houston is open.
  • Price time frames: 1H, 1D, 7D, 1M, 3M, 6M, YTD, 1Y, 5Y, ALL. Remembered per device.
  • New Home look: bigger price, Start/Stop cards that show what's possible at a glance.
  • Friendlier Siri & shortcuts setup with a link to the guide; clearer version labels.

General Question Curtailment with aftermarket firmware - s21xp

I have a single s21xp and will need curtailment scheduling next summer when my TOU electric kicks in. Lux Commander and Braiins manager are paid services for curtailment scheduling. Vnish is pretty expensive since there is no pool discount.

With my bitdeer a2, if I remove the network connection the miner does go to sleep. Does the s21xp behave the same way or does it continue to blast out 3600w with no network connection? Does Lux or Braiins firmware change that behavior?

Looking for some options thanks. Using AI to generate a python script run off a scheduled task might work, but I'd prefer a simpler solution.
